Puerto Rico Collapses?
I'm not an anarchist, really. However, when ANY bloated, useless government starts to fail or "shut down," I do rejoice. Puerto Rico is in that situation now. Spending is out of control there, so the government (run by the "New Progressive Party") is shutting down. Hooray.
40,000 teachers were out of a job and 500,000 students stayed at home. Progressives actually believe all these students sat in their rooms staring at the walls because they weren't being told what to do -- and perhaps some were. Others were outdoors, playing and learning. I bet some even found jobs!
But jobs were scarce -- because the island's largest employer is the government. THAT is the big problem. Government should be damn near the smallest employer in a capitalist and free society.
And another reason that I'm laughing at the failure of big government there -- 100,000 of the government employees who are "victims" of the shutdown actually filed for unemployment! So the government can't pay it's bills, so it has to stop paying employees, so the employees turn to the government for help.
Again, I am indeed overjoyed when huge, bloated government fail. Those who are suffering -- I'm sorry. Perhaps you will learn not to depend on government.

Racist Hispanics?
Gee, since everyone that opposes ILLEGAL immigration is a racist, does that mean that 53% of Hispanics are racists because they support the House version of dealing with the ILLEGAL immigration problem? Oh wait, minorites can't be racist. So, using liberal logic, ONLY White people who oppose lawbreaking are racists, while Hispanics who oppose the exact same lawbreaking are not.
How can you liberals actually keep your stories straight?

Entitled to Wal-Mart profits
So, how much money did you work and earn today? And how much of that are you going to send to me? After all, I'm entitled to it. You have earned more than I, personally, think you should have earned for doing your job, so you should send some of it to me. It's just not fair otherwise.
That's the thinking behind Paul Blank, greedy, self-centered, anti-freedom, anti-capitalist "campaign director" of wakeupwalmart.com:
No hardworking American should ever have to live without health care or struggle to survive on poverty-level wages while corporate America makes obscene profits.
In other words, HE will personally determine how much all work is worth in the world and then HE, personally, will distribute all wealth as he sees fit.'
This is greed, jealousy, and laziness all wrapped in one! He's greedy because he wants health care and high wages at the expense of others. He's jealous because he wants what the stockholders of Wal-Mart have: money. He's lazy because he wants all this without lifting a finger for it -- he's "entitled."
Hey morons of America -- you're entitled to "Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of Happiness." None of these I will deny you. However, to my labor you are NOT entitled -- no matter how much health care or wages you happen to have. Shut up and get a job you greedy, jealous, lazy, scum-suckers.

Yep, I am in agreement with you that the morons of America are entitled to their freedoms just like you and me. They're just so confused on what those freedoms encompass.
I, for one, do oppose some of the philosophies of WalMart, but that's a matter of personal choice and opinion, not a matter of justice and what freedom means in America.
Yay for free enterprise!

I oppose some of the things Wal-Mart does, too -- which is why you will seldom see me shop there. But it's supposed to be a free country -- and Paul Blank doesn't like that.

CA Assemblyman: I Smart, You Not.
How do people actually vote for people like Democratic Assemblyman Ted Lieu? He has decided that he needs to ban the sale of ultrasound machines because you might buy one. He claims
There's really no medical reason for an untrained person to use this machine.
Yes there is, Mr. Lieu -- it's called freedom, a concept with which I'm sure you are utterly and totally unfamiliar with. A quick check of web sites shows at least six doctors and organizations that absolutely disagree with the new medical expert, Mr. Lieu, and claim that there is zero danger from an ultrasound.
"There is no scientific evidence that obstetric ultrasound (which is different than other types of ultrasound) is dangerous at any point in pregnancy."
"there is no adequate information on long term effects on the human embryo or fetus of ultrasound exposure"
"An ultrasound scan does not hurt but the gel used for the examination can feel a bit cold."
"The strength of the ultrasound waves used are found not to be harmful to the baby."
So, despite the medical opinions, Mr. Lieu will determine what you can and cannot do. Even worse, this isn't about protecting the "poor and uneducated" because the ultrasound machines aren't cheap!
But what I wonder, even more, is how people can actually vote for this type of person. Are there actually fruits and nuts (voters) in CA sitting at home now saying, "Wow. That was close. I was just about to buy one of those things, but since MY Assemblyman is banning them, I can't. He saved me because I was really going to get one -- I only stopped because they wouldn't sell it to me."
Or are they just shaking their heads thinking, "Man, that guy is an idiot, but he supports gays, so I'm voting for him?"
Maybe it's a combination of both. Either way, there's a reason you literally couldn't pay me enough to live in that state.

Does this guy know that ultrasound is used for reasons other than seeing a baby in a womb?
Ultrasound is used in physical therapy, the heatwave's it emits are good for muscles and such.

Minimum Wage Wars
The war to advance socialism in North Carolina continues. On the minimum wage front, the socialists are winning -- hoping to be able to determine by executive fiat how much money businesses should spend. It seems likely that this year the Democrat-controlled General Assembly will do just that -- and determine for businesses their expenses.
The minimum wage increase bill failed last year because of a few Democrats who decided that raising the minimum wage to $6.00 an hour was not HIGH enough.
If you support raising the minimum wage, you oppose the free market. It's wrong in every manner of speaking. By what right do you, the minimum wage supporter, claim to be able to tell me how to spend my money? Is it right for me to walk into your house and tell you that you are required to spend a minimum of $100 for internet access? Should I be able to determine the minimum amount that you should spend on your car payments? It is quite exactly the same thing.
There should be no minimum wage law. If you don't like the amount that is offered for the job, don't take the damn job -- it really is that simple. I don't care how much any "advocates" (for socialism) claim is a "living wage." Know what a living wage is? It's however much you damn earn. Seriously.
Since the last time you got a raise, how much have your expenses increased? I'd be willing to bet by exactly the amount of your raise. That's what the vast majority of people do in this country -- they spend what they earn -- no matter how much they earn.
ANY minimum wage law is absolutely wrong. In a free country, I would be free to contractually agree with someone else for compensation in whatever amount or form that I want. But those who want increased minimum wages aren't interested in freedom -- only in government control.

An Honest Liberal
Indeed it is quite rare to see and hear a liberal who will be honest about what they want and what they think -- usually because they know their ideas are NOT what America supports. But Michelle Malkin points out one taxpayer-funded University of Minnesota instructor (and lawyer) Susana De Leon:
It is not possible for minorities to be racist against white people.

Uh,aren't whites the minority now? They are in California.
So... does that mean, as a "white" person, I can make fun of other white people only?
No, really, let's have and example of "minority" racism....
Augustin Cebada, Brown Berets; "Go back to Boston! Go back to Plymouth Rock, Pilgrims! Get out! We are the future. You are old and tired. Go on. We have beaten you. Leave like beaten rats. You old white people. It is your duty to die . Through love of having children, we are going to take over.
Richard Alatorre, Los Angeles City Council. "They're afraid we're going to take over the governmental institutions and other institutions. They're right. We will take them over . . . We are here to stay."
Excelsior, the national newspaper of Mexico, "The American Southwest seems to be slowly returning to the jurisdiction of Mexico without firing a single shot."
Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas; "We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population . . . I love it. They are sh*tting in their pants with fear. I love it."
Art Torres, Chairman of the California Democratic Party, "Remember 187--proposition to deny taxpayer funds for services to non-citizens--was the last gasp of white America in California."
Mario Obledo, California Coalition of Hispanic Organizations and California State Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Governor Jerry Brown, also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton, "California is going to be a Hispanic state. Anyone who doesn't like it should leave."

Sure people of color can be racist towards white people, in the sence that they can call them names, stereotype them, and treat them differently.
Until very recently, however, it's been virtually impossible for people of color to make white people feel like they're at a disadvantage in life by being white. That's racism with teeth -- the rest of it's just a tickle compared to what people of color have been experiencing in America in recent history.
That may be about to change for the first time in centuries. But my money's on the chinese to marginalize white people before the hispanics can do it.

Saskboy -- well, according to the liberals, indeed, she cannot be a racist.
Jenn -- I don't know. If white people are in the minority and NO ONE is in the majority.. uh... I think you'd have to ask the liberals. I guess white people couldn't be racist against white people only, if they were in the minority, but they could still (and automatically would) be racist against everyone else.
Aaron -- if by "very recently" you mean "the last 30 years;" and by "virtually impossible" you mean "easily and often;" then your comment makes sense.

Fair Tax
Well, it's finally happened. We've received a dissenting opinion about the validity of the FairTax.
In the interests of fairness, we will publish this video post in the hope that it will stimulate debate. It was sent in by Cao of Cao's blog (who is getting way too good at these video posts, to my way of thinking).
Funny, I thought she supported the FairTax. Well, you can make your own decision about that, I suppose. At any rate, we do want to give Cao full credit for this week's video post, and encourage readers to visit this blog next week for part 2 of her (dare I call it "unhinged"?) rant against the FairTax.
Thanks, Cao, for making us think!

To Eat Crow
For my "anonymous" commenter who is quite the ungraceful winner:
To eat boiled crow is to be proven wrong after having strongly expressed one's opinion.
To wish that one person win an election and then not have that person win an election hardly qualifies as "eating crow." If one were to steadfastly predict and insist that one candidate were going to win and then have that candidate lose, then THAT would be the whole "proven wrong" part.
Otherwise, saying "I hope it rains," and having it not rain would then be "eating crow."

Ogre, per the vote, the overall outlook of common republicans obviously does not match what you perceive as what a republican should be. Maybe you are right in 50% of the cases, but I wouldn't consider you someone to go to for answers. You put your support behind candidates and use your website for your form of trashing candidates when they are either republican or democrat, it makes no difference to you as long as you have someone to trash. Well, better luck next time my friend. And just so you know, I am not a winner or a loser, but I am a supporter of a WINNER, and proud of it.
So, the crow you eat is your own spin that you try and put on elections and their candidates. When a candidate you endorse loses, you eat crow, because afterall, you did support the winners opposition in your statements and your "so-called" facts that you try to display here.

NC AG Ready to Buy Votes
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper is ready to do whatever it takes to buy votes. That's a more accurate headline for this story about "gas gouging."
The Attorney General says it's not fair that people are actually earning money in this state. He wants to investigate everyone that is earning money from the processing and sale of gasoline: "We also want to expand beyond retailers. We want to go after distributors and even suppliers."
He very disappointed that he doesn't have the power to attack and bankrupt private businesses engaged in the free exchange of commerce unless there is a "state emergency." He's urging the Democrat-controlled legislature to change the law so he can interfere in free commerce any time he wants -- all because "it's not fair."
Right, Democrat candidate for governor Roy Cooper, it isn't fair. It's not fair that you're making a living off MY labor. It's not fair that utterly socialist ideas where YOU, personally, get to decide the entire market economy for a business even get heard in what should be a free country. And it's not fair that you are allowed to run for governor as the AG, using my tax dollars to pad your nest and advance your candidacy.
And no, it's not fair that I can't give you a
swirlie for working so hard to destroy freedom in North Carolina.

NC Republicans Split
The primary election results in North Carolina indicate, at least to me, that the North Carolina Republican party, much like the national Republican party, is still quite split -- and we may be in the process of watching the end of a political party (Democrats, however, remain as united as ever, showing the "blue dog Democrat" theme continues).
In the hotly discussed race here (with hundreds of comments -- thanks people), challenger Robert Brawley lost to incumbent Karen Ray, 55-45. Brawley was clearly the more conservative candidate, although if conservatives ever gain power, Ray would likely go along -- she strongly supports Democrats in Raleigh, but perhaps only when they're in power.
Just to the south, in what was a total shock to me, incumbent John Rhodes, a strong conservative, lost to well-financed challenger by a huge margin: 63-37. Thom is a lawyer and a strong liberal. He supports big government by any means. I'm not sure why he wasn't running as a Democrat.
In a completely different take, Republican turncoat "co-speaker" Joe Morgan was defeated in his primary by Joe Boylan (52-4

. That's a big move away from "go along to get along" with liberals and towards conservatism.
Marilyn Avila beat Rick Eddings in district 40 -- another conservative candidate that won rather strongly (66-34). In the Senate, Ron Toppin and Eddie Goodall both won primary races, and both were stronger conservatives than their opponents.
And in a move I didn't see coming, Vernon Robinson had a huge win in the District 13 US House primary, collecting 63% of the vote. He will face incumbent Brad Miller (D) in the fall. Vernon has been accused of being too conservative.
The net result is that conservatism in North Carolina has been advanced in some places and pushed back in others. Statewide, the Republican Party voters have not united behind conservatism -- and until the party either decides to be conservative or decides not to be, the party will remain split and foundering.
Of course, this could lead to the rise of another political party that might actually be conservative (
depending on the 2008 presidential election). This will be strongly opposed in North Carolina -- only 2 parties are currently allowed to exist by law. Since Democrats will not break ranks for any reason, this could spell the end of the Republican Party. Then again, where else will big-government moderates turn to?
In other reaction, John Hood
thinks this is a step moving towards conservatives taking back the Republican Party. The defeat of Morgan is rather large, so he could be right there.

Politicians Endorse Giving Them Money
What a shocker, huh? North Carolina Politicians agree that everyone who works should give them money just because they're politicians. And, since this is a Democrat-controlled legislature, you can bet this will pass -- what Democrat can turn down spending more government money -- especially if THEY get the money in the form of cash?
At issue is the so-called "public financing" of legislative races. Here's how it works: if you want to run for office, it doesn't cost you anything -- other than higher taxes. You just file for election (with strong restrictions that favor incumbents) and you get checks mailed to you. What a deal, huh?
Government has no business interfering with freedom of speech. Then again, as I mentioned, North Carolina is run by Democrats, and pesky things like laws really don't bother them much.

Animal Personality
I don't think I've seen this one before...
Your Animal Personality
|

Your Power Animal: Shark
Animal You Were in a Past Life: Polar Bear
You have a strong character - you are an aggressive, ambitious, go-getter.
You were born to lead.

Ok, what's up with that? I'm a shark, but the picture is a monkey with a gun? Oh yeah, someone was drinking pretty heavily when they made this one up...

Animal You Were in a Past Life: Whale
You are active, a challenger, and optimistic.
Hard-working, you are always working towards a set goal.
And it showed a little fish being eaten by a bigger fish and that fish being eaten by a bigger fish... Weird. It says I was an eagle and it shows fish getting eaten.

FireFox Crashes
Anyone else having trouble with Firefox? I've had it absolutely lock up and crash FOUR times in the last six hours -- on two different machines with different web pages and other applications running. It's quickly getting VERY annoying.

Do you have the latest version. The old versions crash more often.

Tomslick, I'm not sure the site has anything to do with it, because it's crashing when I'm other places, too. Heck, I don't even load my own site all that often (I should more often to check for mistakes...)
And Mark, thanks for dropping a line -- I have 1.0.7 and it almost never crashed before...

I'll just be typing along in a text box and WHAM, everything locks up. It's never happened when I've been viewing my site, only in other places, and not even in the same place twice.

Have you done a full reboot after each crash, or just restarted the app?
When I had this problem some weeks ago with FF, I discovered that when it crashes and you clear the dialog box, it disappears from the task bar and the task list, but it was still a running app. I discovered this because I use a more comprehensive task manager than the one that ships with Windoze (called PRCView - for Process Viewer - is free and you can Google it to find it if you want - I highly recommend it).
Anyhow, I've since surmised that that "hidden, but crashed" instance will crash additional, fresh instances. I either reboot, or use PRCView to kill the hidden, crashed instance before restarting.
While I've got you - since you're in NC, perhaps you know of any live feeds on election results in Durham, specifically DA Nifong? I've been following the Duke Lacross thing with interest. I'm hoping Black whips Nifong's ASS.

There's a new version today that might help if it was from a DoS attack. More likely you have a corrupt installation so try uninstalling then reinstalling while disabling your Add-on extensions. Re-enable extensions one at a time until things become un-reliable again.

I saw that new version show up, thanks! And I didn't think about extensions, I've got a pile in there. I'll try disabling some, good idea.

I hear too often extensions being blamed for Firefox crashes. At least I for one, crash consitently on many news sites, including the mozilla plugins site, and I've installed NO plugins nor any extensions besides Talkback. I have no crashes with any other program. And WinXP runs perfect. If Firefox keeps crashing it will loose its appeal.
Posted by: coy at May 13, 2006 06:57 AM (2R8T7)

Indeed, it's lost it's appeal with me. Now if IE would suddenly be html-standards compliant, IE would wipe Firefox out.

Government Monopoly: The Internet
Yet again, we see where government is going where no government has any business going. This time, it's the state of Rhode Island government that has decided that they want to put all private Internet Service Providers out of business.
Oh, you didn't read that in the article and news release? It's there, if you understand freedom.
You see, government has a monopoly on the use of force. Government also has unlimited power in the form of regulation and money -- they simply cannot practically run out of either. So, if the government decides to get into a business, they decide whether they win or lose -- no one else can possibly decide.
If the state decides they want to make money, they can just price their services lower than the cost to provide the service. Then, no one can compete with them and all private businesses go out of business (and then the state is free to raise the rates).
The state also has the option of passing regulations that will discourage, reduce, or remove competition at the drop of a hat -- so government literally cannot lose -- unless they want to. Currently, RI is planning on charging $20 a month for 1MBps connections -- well under the current market.
So clearly, their purpose is to remove all possible competition and create a government-run monopoly on internet service in Rhode Island. How will that work? Well just take a look at government-run education and decide for yourself.
Government monopolies are BAD, no matter where they appear.
You might be thinking that the consumer will win because they will have low-cost service -- but you'd be wrong. If the service cannot be provided for less than $20 a month (and it's highly unlikely that it can be based on the current market), then the government, via taxpayers, will have to pay the difference. So the consumer will likely pay about $80 a month for this service -- $20 in a billed fee, $60 in increased taxes.
Of course, if you don't purchase the service, that's okay, you can still pay the $60 in increased taxes -- and there will be no other ISP to choose from.

Unions Shut Down Continental Tire
Unions win! All Union employees should celebrate and rejoice! They have won their nearly year-long battle with the evil corporation! If you are a union member, you can go home and have a party. Feel free to party as long as you like because the union has won and the evil company has lost -- so the company will shut down.
This is the logical end-result of the current state of union affairs in America today. Union's goal is to shut down business, and they have succeeded in Charlotte. In September, the Continental Tire plant in Charlotte
will shut down because the union members refused to work. Again, the union has won, so you union members feel free not to work as long as you want now.
Of course, everyone else who is NOT a union member will pay for this action. We will pay in the form of unemployment payouts to the union members who will be sitting at home on their rears. We will pay in the form of potential higher prices for tires because they have suddenly become more scarce. We may pay in the form of more of the economy sent overseas because Continental Tire cannot manufacture their tires here in the US -- the manufacturing that was done in Charlotte will transfer to Mexico and Brazil.
Congratulations, Local 850, you won.

I never said anyone was innocent. I simply stated that the union met their goal.
I don't get the entire "management vs unions" idea, anyway. Management wins when the company makes a profit. Anything else is a loss. Therefore, if it's Management vs. Unions, then the only goal unions can have is to destroy the company.

Actions, NOT Rights
The theme at the Charlotte criminal invasion supporters protest was that it is about "civil rights." Too bad words don't mean things any more. If they did, people and newspaper reporters would realize that that is a total lie.
Civil rights are rights that people have no matter their skin color, race, or other physical characteristics. However, criminal laws are violated by ACTIONS. Illegal immigration is a law that is broken by the ACTIONS of the people who personally and individually CHOOSE to break those laws.
The civil rights movement of the 60s was based NOT on actions, but on skin color. In that case, people were being punished because of their appearance, not because of their personal actions. There is a difference.
So you morons who claim that you want "civil rights" -- you ALREADY HAVE THEM. You lose rights when your ACTIONS break the law. STOP TAKING THOSE ACTIONS and then no one will condemn you.

Well said. May 1 was Worker's Day, and people 'round the globe were protesting for better working conditions and wages. Only in the US of A, did one group protest for their own people only. The legal immigrants and born citizens are among those loudly protesting for the ILLEGAL from their country. They've won the "human right" to health care. Fed govenment cuts funds. The Health Care clinic closes down, having been forced to provide for the ILLEGAL's right to (free) Health card. Because they are ILLEGAL, they either pay no taxes, or cheat (fake ID's, SS #'s). And they are complaining? The LEGAL person's that pay taxes or obtain imcome legally is footing the bill, at the expense of born citizens.

Quick, Ban Fires!
Since two children in Florida started a fire that has burned more than 1,500 acres, the ONLY logical solution is to ban fires. We need an investigation to determine how those kids got access to fire. We need to register all fires. We need to make it a crime to leave matches or lighters where children can reach them. We must make child-proof safety locks on all matches to ensure that children cannot use them. We should pass laws banning the possession of fire by anyone under the age of 21. We need to ensure only federally licensed dealers (who pay large fees) are permitted to sell matches. We need to ban large-capacity matchbooks -- for the children, of course.
While this may seem silly, it is just as silly as all the above arguments when applied to firearms. Seems to me like fire is a whole lot more dangerous than firearms if two kids can destroy 1,500 acres...

Karen Ray = Bill Clinton?
Everyone remembers the infamous words of Bill Clinton when he claimed, "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is." It appears that Karen Ray, candidate for the North Carolina House in District 95 may have been taking lessons from old slick Willy.
She has created a last-minute television ad that says:
When Democrat Jim Black needed a Republican vote for speaker, it was Robert Brawley who said yes.
When she was called on it and it was shown that Robert Brawley never actually voted for Jim Black (although Karen Ray strongly supported Black and received CASH from him and his cabal),
her response was:
it doesn't say Brawley actually voted for Black for speaker
The complaint is "frivolous" and an attempt by Brawley to evade responsibility for his actions
Right out of the National Democrat Party campaign handbook -- make up lies, explain them away, and if someone points out you're lying, complain about it and deny it at the same time.
I don't know about you, but I really would prefer to have a representative who is not a bold-faced liar in the North Carolina House.

State Bribery Challenged
The lawsuit still continues over the discussion of whether the state of North Carolina is permitted to use taxpayer money to pay bribes. The lawyers for the recipient of the bribe has asked the courts to allow bribes to continue and to throw out the lawsuit.
At issue is the bribe North Carolina paid in 1996 to Dell Computer Corporation. The state bribed the company with taxpayer money so that the company would locate in North Carolina. The amount of cash spent on the bribe was about $300 million.
Even worse, the lawyers who are arguing that the bribery should be allowed don't want the case dismissed because bribery's good -- but because ruling that bribery is wrong "would send a message nationally - and even more importantly in this day and age - internationally, that North Carolina is no longer friendly to business."
So, according to these
scum lawyers, bribery is fine as long as it makes people think you're friendly. Go ahead, try and convince me there's a use for lawyers (sorry,
OddyBobo).
