Charlotte Property Taxes
Charlotte is likely to get an 11% tax increase this year. It is NOT the first tax increase in 10 years -- it's the first tax increase in the past couple weeks. Why do they need more money? It's NOT for this:

NC 2004 Elections Over
No, really. The last contest for the 2004 election in North Carolina has finally ended -- and you thought the recounts were bad in Florida.
Those who have been reading this blog for a LONG time may remember the various, massive problems with elections in NC in 2004. The legislature decided to count votes that were clearly unconstitutional (allowing people to vote in ANY precinct) and the Board of Elections (D) agreed. This prompted various lawsuits and challenges.
As of Friday, the last of these challenges
was decided -- in favor of obeying the legislature and NOT the Constitution. Once again we learn that to the Democrats who run North Carolina, THEY are the supreme power, NOT the Constitution.

Got Cash? Spend it!
That's what the Democrat-controlled North Carolina General Assembly is going to do.
Last year the Democrats who run North Carolina (Governor, Senate, and House) raised taxes by billions of dollars. They claimed they had cut the budget to the bone -- and that was before the $400-million-for-schools lottery passed.
So, this year, with an already new $400 million in cash, they are going to collect as much as
$1.3 BILLION more than they had budgeted for. So, since the Democrats believe that government only exists to spend money, they ARE going to spend it.
When times are bad, the Democrats raise taxes because they claim that incomes to the government are down. When times are good, Democrats create new programs and spend MORE money -- creating spending that simply cannot be removed when times are bad.
One legislator, a Republican (like it makes a difference these days), when asked about "requests" for some of the "newfound cash" said:

Hey moron -- Santa doesn't STEAL FROM OTHER PEOPLE to get his money -- YOU ARE. In order to collect that $1.7 BILLION, you had to TAKE IT FROM ME. GIVE IT BACK, YOU THIEF.
A Democrat said that he'd be glad to spend the money on "local mental health programs." Yet another just said, "blah, blah, spend money."
One Republican, Trudi Walend, may have been heavily medicated at the meeting. She actually said that she wouldn't be surprised to see the "temporary" half-cent sales tax repealed. I would be absolutely shocked. I think Representative Walend has forgotten that Jim Black (D) and the Democrats are running the show in Raleigh.
Folks, it's YOUR money they're spending! Wake up!

That's right. Whenever Democrats have money, they always want to spend it. And whenever Republicans don't have money, they always want to borrow it. Your anger is misplaced by venting at the Democrats, sir. Democrat or Republican has little to do it with. Is there anywhere yyou would like to see greater municipal investment? If someone disagrees with you, do you automatically become a moron? Personally, I see mixture of political influence as being better than all out one party rule. Do you realize that China holds a larger percentage of the debt amassed by the most recent gaggle of politicians in Washington than any other country? Getting angry at one political party too often leads individuals to make excuses for another. Enough with Republicans and Democrats. I'd like to see the Libertarians and the Greens go at it for a while.

Free Stuff for Illegals
Michelle Malkin points out how Cambridge, MA wants to give free money to illegals. That's fine with me -- as long as they follow the rules.
You see, this country was set up as a representative republic, a loose collection of states. If people wanted to do something in their area that wasn't a violation of the Constitution, they could do so. So if the people of Cambridge want to give away free medicine and education to criminals, they should -- but THEY should, not me.
Citizens of Cambridge, YOU give them education. YOU give them medicine -- but don't take one dime from me, because I disagree. All federal money that is used for education and medicine, including Medicare AND Medicaid, should all be completely, 100% stopped to Cambridge and the state of MA. Then we'll see how generous the people of Cambridge are when they have to spend their OWN money.
It is NOT charity to spend someone else's money.
Then again, yes, I can imagine the "outrage" when (if) a true statesman actually stood up in the U.S. Congress and proposed that these people actually spend their OWN money instead of mine. There's currently no political party in Washington that actually believes that people should be free.

It is ALREADY against the law to enter the United States illegally, punishable by a fine and imprisonment. It is ALREADY against the law to hire illegal aliens. We don't need new immigration laws, we only need the current laws to be enforced - and a fence. Read on: Learn the facts about illegal immigration that every American should know.
FACT: “Immigrants” are people lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States. "Illegal aliens” are people who enter the United States without permission; their presence in the United States violates the law.
FACT: United States Code, Title 8, Chapter 12, Subchapter II, Part VIII, Section 1325, states: “Any alien who enters the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers shall be fined or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.”
FACT: United States Code, Title 8, Chapter 12, Subchapter II, Part VIII, Section 1324a, states: “It is unlawful for a person or other entity to hire for employment in the United States, an alien, knowing the alien is an unauthorized alien…”
FACT: In 2006, jobs, elementary school education, drivers licenses, in-state college tuition, bank accounts, food stamps, health care, and even home ownership, are all offered to illegal aliens. Some city councils are even considering letting illegal aliens vote in elections because they have children in public schools. The states of Washington, California, New York, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah provide in-state college tuition rates to illegal aliens; other states are considering the same tuition policy. Several states grant drivers licenses to illegal aliens, ignoring the fact that driver’s licenses are used as a form of ID nationwide. In a few instances, illegal aliens received expensive organ transplant surgery free of charge, and they were placed ahead of tax-paying Americans on the waiting list for the scarce organs. Realtors and lenders in several cities have been known to help illegal aliens purchase homes. Several American cities have become sanctuaries for illegal aliens: In 2003, Seattle’s City Council passed an ordinance preventing the city’s police from questioning the immigration status of people they meet on the streets. For aliens crossing America’s southwest border illegally, water-stations are provided to make the trip through the desert easier. Humanitarian groups placed the water stations along known illegal alien smuggling routes in the Arizona desert.
FACT: In June 2003, the United States Park Ranger Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police announced the “Ten Most Dangerous National Parks in the United States.” Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Arizona, Amistad National Recreation Area in Texas, and Big Bend National Park in Texas, claimed the top three positions because of the high volume of illegal alien smuggling activity in those parks. At Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the rangers estimated that 250 violent drug smugglers and illegal aliens march through the park and public campground areas each night.
FACT: In April 2005, a group of U.S. citizens calling themselves “Minutemen” went to the U.S.-Mexico border to observe illegal aliens entering the country and turn them over to the U.S. Border Patrol. The Minutemen proved that illegal immigration could be stopped by placing more guards on America’s borders, but President George W. Bush derided the efforts of the Minutemen by calling them “vigilantes.”
FACT: In 2006, it is estimated that more than 12 million illegal aliens reside in the United States. In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security said that it apprehended 1,046,422 illegal aliens, but experts said that nearly 3 million people illegally entered the United States that year. In 2002, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security officially reported that there were approximately 7 million unauthorized immigrants living in the United States, and that 67 percent of them, or 4,690,000 people, had entered the United States without being stopped or questioned. FACT and OPINION: It took only 19 people to destroy the World Trade Center and kill nearly 3,000 Americans on September 11, 2001. Americans can’t afford to allow millions of people to illegally cross U.S. borders and reside in the United States on the assumption that most of them are just “migrant workers.” Allowing and encouraging illegal immigration to the United States, especially after 9/11, is dangerous and foolhardy.

You don't get to move there. You have to stay and pay for this.
• Because of their much lower education levels, Mexican immigrants earn significantly less than natives on average. This results in lower average tax payments and heavier use of means-tested programs. Based on estimates developed by the National Academy of Sciences for immigrants by age and education at arrival, the lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) for the average adult Mexican immigrant is a negative $55,200.
• Even after welfare reform, an estimated 34 percent of households headed by legal Mexican immigrants and 25 percent headed by illegal Mexican immigrants used at least one major welfare program, in contrast to 15 percent of native households. Mexican immigrants who have lived in the United States for more than 20 years, almost all of whom are legal residents, still have double the welfare use rate of natives.
• Mexican immigration acts as a subsidy to businesses that employ unskilled workers, holding down labor costs while taxpayers pick up the costs of providing services to a much larger poor and low-income population.
• The lower educational attainment of Mexican immigrants appears to persist across the generations. The high school dropout rates of native-born Mexican-Americans (both second and third generation) are two and a half times that of other natives.
• By increasing the supply of unskilled labor, Mexican immigration in the 1990s has reduced the wages of workers without a high school education by an estimated 5 percent. The workers affected are already the lowest-paid, comprising a large share of the working poor and those trying to move from welfare to work.
• This reduction in wages for the unskilled has likely reduced prices for consumers by only an estimated .08 to .2 percent in the 1990s. The impact is so small because unskilled labor accounts for only a tiny fraction of total economic output.

Thanks for posting the National Anthem... I had forgotten about the abuse it had taken lately. In fact, your post was the last little push for me to take action and finally do something I had been threatening to do for quite a while...

Age-Based Tax System
A tax system that punishes the productive and rewards the lazy (as the current US Tax system does) is bad. Politicians for years have been using the tax system to punish and reward those they like. They've been using it to determine who is "good" and who is "bad" and to shape social policy. That's not the purpose of the tax system.
Now, in Onslow county, NC, they want the General Assembly to give them permission to
charge taxes based on a person's AGE. That's right, if you just happen to be the incorrect age, you will be charged MORE taxes. Oh, but it's for the poor (TM), so it's ok. It's only going to punish those who can "afford it," so if you oppose this, you oppose the poor.
Hey socialist, controlling, manipulative bastards (that would be the Onslow county board of commissioners), how about reducing EVERYONE'S taxes, instead of just punishing those who happen to be the wrong age? This is SO far from what this government was intended to be. Oh, how I yearn for freedom.

I give it less than 10 years until a full blown shooting civil war breaks out in the U.S. I had it at 25 years, 5 years ago, but am bringing it down at the same rate the SS system is safe hype. They reduce the safe until date 2-3 years every year. I'm also betting the SS system will go bust in less than 10 years. If a democrat is elected in 08, reduce the time left by 50%.

Certainly I can agree with the SS system going to crap -- same with Medicare -- but I just don't see the shooting war.
I think the socialists and other big-government types are too good. They know well enough not to present a target. If there's a shooting civil war, who is on which side? Freedom fighters vs. who? Government? What government? Who, specifically, can anyone rebel against? I think that's the biggest reason that another civil war is unlikely.
I think the only way a shooting war will break out is if the government starts it -- and I think they are unwilling to do that. I could be wrong.

Yeah, I don't see a shooting war. I have thought I'd have no issues immigrating if I had to. My kin came here over 250 years ago. While I still think its the best place to live, the minute I don't, I don't have issues with taking off and not looking back. I have a lot to offer a country.

I can vouch for this photo, as I have a few in my own collection. The most "interesting" photo I've ever seen, however, was from the Yellowstone "area" during a meteor shower. It seems the photographer left his shutter open for the entire shower and caught EVERY SINGLE ONE, although it came out as streaks, but it looked SO COOL!
Now, as for Ogre's pic, I vouch for the fact that the night sky can look like this, but if this is real, or just part of the VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY (of which I'm a member, but I haven't gotten the memo on this one), I'll leave that to Ogre.

Ethics = No Free Speech?
The legislature, in response to law-breaking by House speaker Jim Black (Democrat), is preparing to pass ethics legislation that has a little to do with ethics and a lot to do with freedom of speech.
The legislation should, according to the House "select" panel (Select means that Jim Black personally picks his friends and knows the outcome before the panel meets), ban gifts from lobbyists and "groups that employ lobbyists." It also wants to ban the conversion of campaign dollars to personal money -- without addressing what could be done with campaign dollars that are not actually spent?
Worse, the suggested legislation also supports banning all freedom of political speech by creating "temporary" public financed elections. Of course, keep in mind, the last tax increase from years ago was "temporary," too -- as was the last income tax increase.
So, would you support a bill that bans bribes from lobbyists but also bans freedom of speech for everyone else? I wouldn't. Once again, I'd go with the simple solution -- freedom. Let anyone donate whatever they like to anyone they want to -- but disclose everything within 24 hours on the internet.

Stupid is...well, MA government
The Massachusetts government is demanding that myspace.com raise it's minimum age for usage from 14 to 18. For those who need me to type slow, that means that the current age requirement to use myspace.com is 14. When you sign up, if you're less than 14 years old, you cannot use the system.
So, why does the all-powerful state want to tell myspace.com what to do? Because in CT a 27-year old man met up with a 13-year old through myspace.
Yes, government IS stupid.

Each and every year, approximately 8,000 pieces of legislation are filed - by 200 legislators - and approximately 500 pass. That total includes home rule petitions, like allowing the Town of Holliston to amend its charter to have 5 cemetery commissioners instead of 3.
Someday, the Mass. Legislature will learn the difference between a bill and a press release, but it won’t be anytime soon.’

Nightmare of Government Solutions
Government causes problems. That's the primary thing that government actually DOES. After government causes the problems, government decides to create solutions -- which, most often, result in MORE problems. Any time government goes where it should not be, the only possible result is bad.
At issue this time is government's interference with the free market for insurance. FEMA issues "rebates" for insurance in some areas. In other words, your federal tax dollar pays to subsidize other people's insurance costs if they build houses in risky areas. That's wrong. FEMA should NOT be paying for people's insurance. If someone wants to build somewhere, let them -- and let them come to a contractual agreement with the insurance company for how much the insurance will cost.
Now, since FEMA has interfered, they've caused more problems. You see, since FEMA is paying for the insurance, they want to dictate what people can build. In
this case, FEMA wants houses to have hurricane shutters. Of course, since FEMA is part of the executive branch, they can't pass laws. So they're pressuring the NC Legislature to pass laws to require shutters in certain places. And if the legislature refuses, FEMA is threatening to raise the insurance rates.
It's a damn simple solution -- have FEMA STOP. That's all. Everything will be fine. You idiots like Harold King, who lives in a flood-prone area might think it's "not fair" that you actually have to pay for your own damn insurance. Well, Mr. King, I think it's a whole lot MORE "not fair" that *I* have to pay YOUR insurance bill.

Government Corporations?
Does anyone know the purpose of government? Are you aware of WHY we even have governments? I always thought it was for something like this:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,
Or maybe even this:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
But obviously I was confused:
The Biotechnology Center is a private, nonprofit corporation supported by the N.C. General Assembly. Its mission is to provide long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business and education statewide.
In other words, the government of North Carolina, using it's monopoly on force to demand that citizens give it money or go to jail, is giving money to a "private" corporation who can spend that money as they please, to "provide societal benefits."
Oh, we are nowhere near the great nation that was created in 1775. I think it's time to once again seriously consider that next step:
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

R.I.P. Firefox
I hate to do it, but I'm left with no choice. I have been using Firefox for over a year now, and I've enjoyed every minute of it. I have always liked the way it responds, it's faster than any other browser, and I particularly like that it's actually HTML-compliant.
But those times are over. I've spent at least 6 hours in the last 3 days fighting Firefox. I've had old versions and new versions. I've had it automatically update. I've installed, re-installed, and un-installed -- all to no avail. The most current "stable" version (1.5.0.2 I think, I can't keep it running) is wasting a lot of my time.
On one computer, a very, very powerful machine (for a PC), the new install does nothing. It updated and sits there. It cannot navigate to any web sites, nor does it ever time out -- a blank page is all that will appear. On another machine, the new latest version has worked for months -- but now locks up at random times -- and breaks Windows so bad I have to remove the battery to get the machine to restart.
It's on 3 machines, all with XP, but with different environments, and it's different times and on different web pages where it stops working. And again, on one machine I get nothing.
At this point, I give up -- I just don't have more hours and hours to devote to testing and changing and working with this thing. Perhaps it will work better if I change my OS to Linux, and I'll try that on one of my machines when I get a chance -- but for now, sorry Firefox, but you've got to go.

I haven't had the same problems with Firefox, but I have friends who have. I've been using Opera, because it's such a small target, and it works well. I'm not touching the new IE version until MS releases its first security patch.

I'm VERY seriously wondering if IE 7 is spyware. I just installed Opera and it has the SAME reaction as Firefox -- zero -- it just sits there and cannot find any web pages and never times out. Both are configured for direct connection to the internet. IE 7 finds web pages just fine. This is really getting annoying. I may have to switch all my computers over to Linux to get anything to work.

Is it maybe a firewall built into your router causing the problem? It could be that it's blocking all browsers except the IE. Try connecting one of your PCs directly to your modem and see if the Firefox or Opera works that way.

I think I need to uninstall IE 7 and see if suddenly everything else works.
Unfortunately, I can't connect directly because the router is in another room (and I don't have long enough wires). Firefox worked FINE until I installed the latest version. I've even turned off ALL firewalls and protections and nothing is getting anything. Damn, this is frustrating. And just think -- I'm a damn computer professional.

I got tired of trying to set up my blog to fit both IE and Firefox. I downloaded IE7 Beta and really to like it. I haven't had any problems at all with it so far. Even using Firefox, a lot of websites, including my bank, wouldn't work with it anyway.

I'm using FF 1.0.7, which works fine.
Based on various horror stories I've heard, I don't think I'll upgrade until 2.1 comes out... if then... :-)

ACLU Crushes Freedom Again

Ruling on a 15-year-old ACLU case, a federal judge today ordered the city of San Diego to remove a mountain-top cross within 90 days or face a fine of $5,000 a day.
U.S. District Judge Gordon Thompson said, "It is now time, and perhaps long overdue, for this court to enforce its initial permanent injunction forbidding the presence of the Mount Soledad cross on city property," the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Thompson ruled in 1991 the Mount Soledad cross violates the so-called "separation of church and state" but the case has remained in courts and become an issue of public policy for more than a decade.
CLU lawyer James McElroy believes San Diego officials finally will give up their fight.
"I don't think the city has its heart in taking more action," he said, according to the paper.
A city lawyer argued during the hour-long court hearing today that citizens had voted for transfer of the land under the cross.
Proposition A, passed by 75 percent in July, called for the city to donate the cross to the federal government as the centerpiece of a veterans memorial.
The ballot initiative came about after the city refused to donate the cross and memorial to the federal government. A group called San Diegans for the Mount Soledad National War Memorial took just 23 days to gather 105,000 signatures.
In a ruling now on appeal, however, a Superior Court judge found the transfer unconstitutional.
The Union-Tribune said the group behind the public vote on transfer likely will appeal Thompson's decision.
The 29-foot cross has stood on Mount Soledad as the center of a war memorial on city land since 1954. The first cross on the site was built in 1913.
A bill authorizing the federal government to take over the memorial was authored by Republican U.S. Reps. Duncan Hunter and Randy Cunningham. President Bush signed the bill into law in December.
