Nightmare of Government Solutions

Government causes problems. That's the primary thing that government actually DOES. After government causes the problems, government decides to create solutions -- which, most often, result in MORE problems. Any time government goes where it should not be, the only possible result is bad.

At issue this time is government's interference with the free market for insurance. FEMA issues "rebates" for insurance in some areas. In other words, your federal tax dollar pays to subsidize other people's insurance costs if they build houses in risky areas. That's wrong. FEMA should NOT be paying for people's insurance. If someone wants to build somewhere, let them -- and let them come to a contractual agreement with the insurance company for how much the insurance will cost.

Now, since FEMA has interfered, they've caused more problems. You see, since FEMA is paying for the insurance, they want to dictate what people can build. In this case, FEMA wants houses to have hurricane shutters. Of course, since FEMA is part of the executive branch, they can't pass laws. So they're pressuring the NC Legislature to pass laws to require shutters in certain places. And if the legislature refuses, FEMA is threatening to raise the insurance rates.

It's a damn simple solution -- have FEMA STOP. That's all. Everything will be fine. You idiots like Harold King, who lives in a flood-prone area might think it's "not fair" that you actually have to pay for your own damn insurance. Well, Mr. King, I think it's a whole lot MORE "not fair" that *I* have to pay YOUR insurance bill.
