Illegal Aliens? Criminal Aliens?
In years past, those who broke the law to enter this country were called "illegal aliens." I asked, if someone's not prosecuted for something if they're criminals. Only Contagion responded, and with what seems to be the prevailing thought -- that you're not criminal unless you're caught. So what are we left with?
They can't be called illegal aliens because in many places, like Charlotte, NC, they are NOT illegal -- the police department has an official policy that says they absolutely will not arrest, detain, or report any illegals, and if a police officer does, they WILL be reprimanded. So they're not illegals.
They can't be called "undocumented," because as Michelle Malkin has
pointed out, they certainly have plenty of documents, even if they are forged (and they're immune to prosecution for breaking those laws too, according to the Charlotte PD).
They can't be called "workers" because so many of them are on welfare and receiving free education, food stamps, and healthcare that they have an overall net drain on the economy of the United States.
So what's left? Do we just call them "future citizens?"

If they keep saying that they are doing the work that americans won't do then why are they on welfare, because we know plenty of americans love being on welfare.
So are the "people who are not citizens and don't have green cards" lying? Because they are doing the "work" that americans love to do.

I'm thinking that the word "work" has quite a different meaning to some people...so we can't say they're doing the work other people won't, so should we say they're doing "things" other people won't do?
That would be pretty accurate because I know quite a few people who would never go on welfare or accept government handouts...

Too Much Time, Too Many Causes
Here's a new one for you. Indian Cowboy has started up a new group because apparently there were too many causes and political groups in existence. He's started a group called Conservatives Against Intelligent Design. Okaaay.
The group exists to
to give a voice to Republicans, Independent Conservatives, and Libertarians across the country who stand opposed to the teaching of ‘intelligent design’ and other forms of creationism in the classroom.
I have to admit, I'm not quite sure why a group needs to exist to oppose teaching a certain type of teaching. And if they want to join an already existing group that's well-funded (with endless taxpayer dollars) that's vehemently opposed to intelligent design, there's the ACLU.
I'm with
Dangerous Liberty where he responds with
A little Depth Would Be Nice:
Indian Cowboy reveals the astounding ignorance of what ID proposes which is sadly so common among those who oppose it, especially those who do so because they consider it a "perversion of science".
The real reason that appears to be behind those who oppose teaching ID is a vehement opposition to anything resembling religion. Of course, there's a real simple solution that would completely and totally end all this discussion and all these groups -- which is why it won't happen: get government completely out of the education business.
Why does the government have a monopoly on education? If everyone were free to make their own decisions regarding their own education without any government interference, each family could decide for themselves if they wanted ID, creationism, or evolution taught in whatever manner they wanted. But there's few people interested in freedom these days.

I'm with you there. I don't believe the central government has any business whatsoever in education and it certainly should not be advocating one theory over another. What is so harmful in teaching about an opposing view? We have courses in some schools about becoming Muslim, so how on earth does this alone fall under the so-called anti-establishment clause?
One of the ethics topics that came up in one of my teaching courses dealt with evolution. A hypothetical student knew the theory of evolution inside and out...she had attended a seminar with her church and learned a lot. She wrote her papers in such a way that she demonstrated understanding for the material, was able to answer all questions but she clearly did not believe evolution. The question was whether or not it was ethical to pass her for her knowledge even if she didn't accept it as truth.
How is that a matter of ethics?
Posted by: Dana at June 06, 2006 06:00 PM (aymNT)
2
You bring up a good point -- how about forming an organization that's purpose is to remove teaching a religion in school that's openly violent to the American way of life (Islam) before we work to eradicate just Christianity.
And your ethics situation indeed shows a clear indoctrination view as opposed to an educational view. To even ask that question supposes that the purpose of the "passing grade" is to ensure the student AGREES with what is being taught and has nothing to do with whether they have learned it.
But, in today's government-run education system, it is NOT about education -- just another reason the government shouldn't be doing it.

You know where I first learned about ID? In school. Specifically in a philosophy course. Which is exactly where it belongs.
It is a philosophical theory inspired by biology, but it is not biology in and of itself.
This has nothing to do with hating religion; I'm a religious man, many of the signers are religious. Instead it has to do with teaching the right thing in the right place. ID isn't an 'alternative' to evolution. IN fact, if you read Behe's own words, ID is at best an alternative to 'abiogenesis', or the origin of the first living organism. Evolution doesn't speak to that and has never claimed to.
Neither abiogenesis (primordial soup might ring a bell) nor ID are currently taught in much depth. Why? Neither has much evidence. Tantalizing suggestions yes, but nothing concrete enough to be taught in a science class.
The problem here is that ID never had a place in the science class, religiously inspired or not.

i'd be all for getting government out of education if I could be confident that parents wouldn't screw their kids by concealing truth from them.
I've read a fair amount of the ID and creationist 'educational material'. Lies, straw men, and oversimplifications abound, not to mention outright denial of extant evidence.
I dont much like the idea of indoctrinated kids whether it's from bible thumpers (which is different from chrsitian) or leftists.
Posted by: IndianCowboy at June 06, 2006 11:00 PM (xV6tD)

I disagree with what's taught in the schools -- I see it up close. Uniformitarianism is accepted as fact. The big bang theory is the #1 "fact" taught as accepted "fact" and most instructors make fun of anyone who dares to question or challenge that "Fact." That's not science, either.
And I'm surprised you're opposed to freedom! At least that's what you reveal in your second comment -- you don't trust parents to teach their parents what they want. If I want to teach my children that Africa doesn't exist, why would you presume to stop me?
Someone is going to "indoctrinate" the kids -- you seem to presume that government is better able to do that than I am. I don't trust government to do ANYTHING right, certainly not education.
I'd rather see an organization that's interested in getting the direct teaching of Islam as a Religion of Peace out of schools than one dedicated to the removal of adding a new theory into classrooms.
Thanks for stopping along!

Dana: It's a matter of ethics. By asking the question, and implying that the student might not pass, the course designer shows that there are a large number of unethical and/or dogmatic teachers that need to learn this.
For some reason my trackback to this post didn't work, but I've got a thread going at Tucents. It's interesting seeing an avowed socialist and an avowed libertarian in agreement.

That could be, Dave, if the implied answer was that the student should pass. I'm betting in most cases that there are indeed a large number of teachers that would say that the student is an idiot and shouldn't pass. Clearly that's wrong, but I wonder if the ethics class that he attended even considered there was right and wrong...it was a "teaching ethics" course...

Every time I've tried to come over here I get a message saying that the server cannot be found...hence the lateness of any reply : )
Anything other than evolution has been determined to not be "science" since it involves God. Science, I am told, is inherently atheistic. I always thought it was a method of reasoning which involved forming hypothesese and testing them. True, God cannot be tested in such manner. Nor can man coming from ape. Both, I suppose, are postulation. But determining from the outset that there is no God serves to skew any viewpoint on the matter. But much of what evolution teaches cannot be proven any more than God can. Yes, species change over time...but we are yet to find any actual evidence of one species changing to another. And as to that primordial soup and abiogenesis stuff...it is exactly what I was taught in my high school biology class.
So long as we are indoctrinating children, I maintain that as the right of the parents, not the state. (By the way, I'm not big into ID. Under the theory, you can be one of the many who believe life on earth was seeded by alien life forms. But it is a theory...one of many. And some scientists have noted that it does a disservice for a student to not know about it.)

Sorry -- the server was under attack for a number of days there.
You are correct in your analysis of science, and especially that of evolution. The way that the theory of evolution was developed was specifically and intentionally anti-God. The theory started like this: There is no God, there is nothing that can influence this world other than natural forces. Now, let's propose stuff.
And yes, absolutely, the parents should have total control. That's what freedom is all about!

Following warnings by extremist Islamic group al-Muhajiroun, in which the group said that the red cross in the England flag symbolizes the 'blood thirsty crusaders' and the occupation of Muslims, some of the largest companies in England have ordered their workers not to wave the flags.
I am offended that they are only offended by one of the crosses. Why are they not acting like wusses over the Scottish and Irish crosses too? The Habibs should be punished for discrimination.
The cross of St George, patron saint of England since the 1270's, is a red cross on a white ground. After James I succeeded to the throne, it was combined with the cross of St. Andrew in 1606.
The cross saltire of St Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, is a diagonal white cross on a blue ground.
The cross saltire of St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is a diagonal red cross on a white ground. This was combined with the previous Union Flag of St George and St Andrew, after the Act of Union of Ireland with England (and Wales) and Scotland on 1 January 1801, to create the Union Flag.

Government Needs MORE Control
So says the Charlotte Observer. Yes, the socialist paper of record in North Carolina has weighed in once again to support the idea that all the subjects of North Carolina are stupid idiot morons who cannot even wipe their own bottoms and will all die without the government doing everything for them.
This time, they're supporting Jim Black's bill that was designed to put cash in the pockets of his contributors (and his pockets) by forcing ALL
wards of the state children to have an officially sanctioned, state-sponsored (and paid-for) eye exam before being permitted to enter a school building (while at the same time being forced by law to enter the aforementioned buildings).
So yes, that law that did not pass last year because it was a clear an obvious attempt by Jim Black to payback his supporters, would require children to get an eye exam or they're not allowed in school -- which they are required by law to attend.
But no matter, and likely because of that provision, the Observer strongly supports the law. After all, if people don't like it, the state can just swoop in and take the children and make the official wards of the state if anyone dares to disobey them -- and that's why the Observer so strongly supports that law. Keep in mind if you read the Observer -- their position is socialist -- they always support anything that expands the state and the state's power. Always.

Guard Our Borders!
Foreword by Heidi at Euphoric Reality
From Spanish-speaking illegal workers, to angry tenured professors and arrogant politicians, we are hearing more and more tenets and demands from a movement called
Reconquista. The movement, once dismissed as extreme racist rhetoric, has
rapidly gained traction and momentum among millions of ill-educated illegal aliens and well-established Mexicans alike.
Reconquista gives voice to the angry demands of present-day Mexicans who mistakenly think they have indigenous rights to the land of the Southwestern United States - which they claim was "stolen" by an imperialist American government. The centerpiece of their agenda is the mythical
Aztlan.
In the spirit of a new people that is conscious not only of its proud historical heritage but also of the brutal "gringo" invasion of our territories, we, the Chicano inhabitants and civilizers of the northern land of Aztlan from whence came our forefathers, reclaiming the land of their birth and consecrating the determination of our people of the sun, declare that the call of our blood is our power, our responsibility, and our inevitable destiny.
"From whence came our forefathers...?" Nothing could be further from the truth - not that the facts matter much in their efforts to further "La Raza" - or The Race. Using racially-charged arguments to batter at the traditional guilt mentality of Americans, proponents of Aztlan aim to "reconquer" the Southwestern United States as their due. Apparently, they fail to understand that the
tribes of present-day Mexico never inhabited the Southwest U.S., nor for the most part did Mexicans themselves - it was mostly open land [frontier] except for northern Native Americans (as you will see below).

Democrats to pay Reparations
Well, that's not quite what the N.C. Panel has decided, but it is the only logical conclusion that can be drawn from their royal proclamation.
The panel did decide that North Carolina should "pay" for an 1898 race riot that was started by white Democrats in which the white Democrats ran over 2,000 Republicans and blacks out of Wilmington, NC. These riots by white Democrats appear to have killed 60 as many as 60 blacks and cost "billions of dollars" in economic losses. These white Democrats are reportedly the source of the only coup d'etat in America.
So, being Democrats, the panel of course concluded that they were not at fault, but that the state should pay billions in reparations. If that's the case, then the reparations should go only to blacks and Republicans because the riots were perpetrated by white Democrats.
In addition, since white Democrats were the ones who rioted and killed and ran blacks and Republicans out of the city, I think that only white Democrats should have to pay the reparations. State Representative Thomas Wright, a BLACK Democrat plans to file a bill for reparations next year. Since he will potentially gain cash from this for the color of his skin, I'm not sure how he can even vote on such a bill -- oh wait, this is the North Carolina General Assembly, where ethics don't exist.
I want to know why Thomas Wright, an obvious descendant of the DEMOCRATS who initiated the riot, feels like he should be compensated when I, a white Republican, who is clearly a descendant of a victim of the riot, should not.

Tangled Webs of Government
When government gets too big, as it clearly is now, it gets more and more messy. Remember, government earns and creates NOTHING -- it can ONLY get money to spend if it takes that money from someone who IS productive and creating. Keep that in mind as you read this confusion:
The authority's board of directors voted 8-3 to support state legislation that would dispose of the lawsuit challenging the city's downtown convention center plan and - at the same time - cut about $290,000 a year from the money it uses to attract tourists to the area. The legislation would take effect July 1, 2007.
So the state and town are using taxpayer money to defend against lawsuits and create lawsuits and fund advertising for tourism and for lobbying the state legislature and for building a convention center. The state and town should not being doing a single one of those things -- none.
But the supporters of this action believe the town won't have a convention center unless this convoluted law passes -- but so what? Why MUST the town have a convention center that is paid for by taxpayers? ONLY because government is too big and causes itself to grow and feed upon itself. It's wrong, plain and simple -- but it's so convoluted and confused now that it likely won't stop without a violent revolution.

While I don't disagree with the article, it still does not make it right. This is what happened it Vietnam, as it is suggested, and what turned people against the war. Punishment is deserved. This is what happens when a police state is created. This war should never have happened in the first place.

Kansas,
That is your opinion, but fortunately President Bush didn't agree and Saddam is where he belongs and he will burn in hell after the court in Iraq finishes with him. One other thing, you can't say punishment is deserved until all the facts are in and it is determined that the Marines did anything wrong. You are interjecting your opinion when you say punishment is deserved, remember in this country you are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. That way we don't have people convicted in the court of public opinion.

Why send in the Marines if you don't want people dead?
And right, Jon, there has been no trial, only conjecture by the left who hates the war.

NC To Consider Busing...Criminals
While Mayor Nagin left his school buses unused during Hurricane Katrina, Senator Forrester of North Carolina has proposed that North Carolina make use of school buses -- to bus criminal aliens (illegal immigrants) back to Mexico. What a concept.
Well, they're only trying to form a study committee to determine the cost and feasibility of using buses this way, and since it was proposed by a Republican, it's highly unlikely to make any progress in the Democrat-controlled North Carolina Senate. But the supporters of criminals are outraged.
They fall back on the old argument that it's a federal issue, etc. One supporter of the criminals said that he encourages the Legislature to completely and totally ignore all immigration laws and accept all criminal aliens as full citizens in the state. Once again, Saddam Hussein, come to North Carolina, you'll be welcome here and allowed to vote any time you want.
I like the reaction of Bill Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration:
"Why do we need to study it? Can’t we just go ahead and fund that?”
Sorry, Mr. Gheen, there will be nothing done to any criminal aliens in North Carolina as long as the Democrats are in charge.

You are correct. The Democrats must be taken out of the majority in the NC House and Senate if there is to be any real effort to control illegal immigration in North Carolina.
The Democrats have stopped all bills that the public would like on this issue because the Republicans have called for enforcement.
Let's hope and work hard to make sure 2006 brings the needed political changes to Raleigh.

It is certainly an uphill battle -- against gerrymandering, mostly.
But yes, I'll continue to fight and encourage others to. Thank you very much for stopping by!

Accident: With Casualties
I received a photograph of an accident scene from Mustang. He adds
Not one for the squeamish...
If you look closely you can see what appear to be some survivors of the accident still in the wreckage. Although the picture is quite graphic, it makes you realize how quickly our loved ones can be taken from us.
I stayed on the scene to help and even though I performed mouth to mouth on quite a few of them, very few survived.
It's so tragic and likely to scare those with a weak heart that I've included the picture in the extended entry.

NC Property Rights Coalition
A new group just announced their formation in North Carolina to protect property rights: The North Carolina Property Rights Coalition.
The North Carolina Property Rights Coalition (NCPRC) is a 501(c) (4) non-profit coalition of individuals, organizations, businesses and community leaders dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights and interests of property owners, as well as revealing misuses and threats of eminent domain throughout North Carolina
One of their first goals is to "push for an amendment to the North Carolina Constitution that prohibits the use of government’s eminent domain power to seize private property for economic development purposes."
An admirable goal, certainly, but not one likely to get much traction. The Democrats simply do not like the idea of people owning property, and the average person doesn't understand the implications of the Kelo decision (from what I've personally seen).
But hey, good luck with it, and I'll help out any way I can. I would really like to be able to own property in the state -- even if it is a concept that would be new and different.

Meaning of the word "Criminal"
I'm wondering about the use of a word. Perhaps you, the good reader, can help me out here. Let's say there's a law that says you're not allowed to spit on the sidewalk. It's clearly defined that you will be fined $50 if you do spit on the sidewalk. However, if you DO spit on the sidewalk, you will not be fined. The police department has announced far and wide that they simply will not, under any circumstances whatsoever, be enforcing that law. If you spit on the sidewalk in front of a policeman, they absolutely will not, ever, fine you for spitting on the sidewalk.
Are you or are you not a criminal when you spit on the sidewalk?
Here's help from Dictionary.Com if you need it:

Innocent until proven guilty. If not arrested then you are not a criminal. Yes, you may have broken the law... but you got away with it.
I hate to see where you are going with this poll.

The Left and "Needs"
As GM Roper has noted before, the Left (Democrats, Socialists, The Media) tend to make up definitions for words that so people will react in an emotional rather than a logical way. For example, quite literally anything that's "For the Children" cannot be opposed -- even if it has nothing to do with children.
The
latest word game I've noted in North Carolina is the use of the word "need." In the article linked, the North Carolina Zoo "needs" $1 million state money. Well the Ogre "needs" a new car, a bigger house, and a yard with a barn for horses. The Ogre "needs" freedom, including lower taxes on his labor. The Ogre "needs" the freedom to engage in trade without asking the government's permission. But the Ogre's not going to get any of that, is he?
Yet the Left, in it's all-knowing manner, can determine which "needs" are valid and which are not. This is part and parcel of being part of The Left -- they have the ability to know more. They are anointed. They know what's best for you. They know which "needs" are "real" needs and which are not. They can tell what you should do and what should be done with your money. If you question them, you are anti-everything.
No, I'm not anti-Zoo. I'm pro-freedom. If the Zoo can raise $1.5 million in private funds, why MUST the state provide another million? Why can't they raise another million themselves? Because The Left says so.

The "need" game has been going on for a very long time. Possibly the most devastating disassembly of it was in Robert Ringer's book "How You Can Find Happiness During The Collapse Of Western Civilization." He addresses the whole "desires are needs" and "needs are rights" syndrome with extraordinary clarity.
Just now, New York, the richest city in the world, is screaming to the heavens over a reduction in the handout it gets from the Department of Homeland Security. New York's senior senator, the Dishonorable Charles Schumer, has likened it to "declaring war on New York." The reduction is on the order of $100 million. The city's annual budget is over $60 BILLION.
The propulsive force is envy. For a compelling treatment of this corrosive agent, I recommend Helmut Schoeck's book "Envy: A Theory Of Social Behaviour." It's an eye-opener.

I haven't heard of that book, but I shall have to check it out! Thanks for suggesting it.
And you're dead on with the utter insanity that ensues if any funding for any program is ever reduced by even one penny. When I see reactions like that I do truly wonder if there is any hope for this country and freedom.

Virus Warning
There is a new virus. It's called WORK. If you receive WORK from your
colleagues, your boss, via e-mail, or from anyone else, do not touch it
under any circumstances. This virus wipes out your private life completely.
If you should happen to come in contact with this virus, take two
friends and go straight to the nearest bar. Order drinks immediately
and after three rounds, you will find that WORK has been completely
deleted from your system.
Forward this virus warning immediately to at least five friends. Should
you realize you do not have five friends, this means you are already
infected by this virus and WORK already controls your life. If this is
the case, go to the bar and stay until you make at least five friends.
I think I have five friends, but am not entirely positive so I'm headed
for the bar anyway.....it never hurts to be safe.
(H/T to
Raven).
