Ogre's Politics & Views
June 01, 2006
Haditha
Well, it's all over the news, the web, and blogs, so I might as well comment on this one, right? I mean, everyone else is doing it...
First, to expose any bias that might cloud my view on this one: I served as a Sergent of Marines for 5 years.
Michelle Malkin points out that Marines on the ground do describe children being used as terrorists, and she also has some pictures that bear that idea out.
Vinnie at
My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy basically
say to shut up because there isn't enough known, but accept that nothing's wrong until there's clear evidence that "Iraqi men, women, and children were lined up against a wall and executed."
Over at
Cao's Blog, she
starts to get to the heart of the matter with this statement:
How many suckerpunches to our armed forces are we going to tolerate from the media and their associates in government?
But that's not quite there. It takes Heidi and Kit from
Euphoric Reality to
really say what needs to be said:
The military does a dirty, disgusting job so we don’t have to. The very least we can do is let them do it the way they were trained to do it–the way it needs to be done. The sooner the enemy’s will is broken, the sooner our troops all come home for good.
Look, folks, you might not want to hear about it, but Marines are trained. They are trained to kill people and break things.
That's what they do. If you don't want people to die, DON'T SEND IN THE MARINES! It really is that simple.
No, all the details may have not been released, but I've already seen enough. The only facts I need to know are that the Marines were deployed to kill people and break things. They did. So what's the problem?
If these Marines are tried for "murder," which they probably will be (after all, Murtha has already convicted them), for killing innocents, I want to see every pilot in the Navy, Marines, Army, and Air Force tried for killing "innocents" when they dropped their bombs and hit any "civilian" target.
It's a damn war. People die in a war. That's why they're called wars. And yes, if you're not uncomfortable with that, there is something wrong with you. War is not a good thing. It's not clean. It's ugly and messy...and people die. Feel free to hate war, that's not a bad thing. But don't punish Marines who are doing what they've been trained to do.
"No one ever won a war by dying for their country, you win a war by getting the other dumb son of a bitch to die for his country."
-- General MacArthur (or Patton, or someone else who knew how to win a war -- NOT the leftist U.S. press)

Patton said that, not MacArther:
http://www.military-quotes.com/Patton.htm
It was in the movie too.
Convicting the Marines of anything isn't going to help the situation. We do not need our armed forces hesitating about political fallouts in every engagement.

I hate to be the one to "rain on your parade" but - if it's proved to be true - what those marines did was nothing like they were supposed to be 'trained' to do. Unless you call spending hours going door to door killing innocents, kids, women, anyone they could get their hands on... acceptable marine behaviour? Somehow I can't see that, not if you spent 5 years in the service and understand the difference between control and chaos.
I can't believe anyone could defend this type of action. I know about the urge for revenge, and yes, even Irish troops (peacekeepers at that) have been in similar situations in the Leb... but their commanders have always kept a lid on things, reinforced the chain of command, held the line which seperates trained soldiers from animals. Of course there have been occasions when collegues get killed and the rest of the unit wants revenge, but that's not how it's done. Combatants are one thing... civvies are entirely another, especially unarmed and unsuspecting ones.
In this case (and I do hope it's not true, but so far all evidence is to the contrary) - these marines would appear to be about as far from honourable as you can get. If this is what America holds up as 'the best of the best' then it's a pretty sad state of affairs.
On the other hand if they are being unfairly tried by media and it all proves to be a fiction - then fair play. Vindication due and apologies close behind, and I'll be the first in line... but I have to tell you as someone who has been following the various _commentaries and news blitzes on Iraq, this one has all the hallmarks of really really bad news because it 'smells' true.

I think you've made a much more general leap that I did?: "spending hours going door to door?"
Where did that one come from? This was in the heat of battle, while explosions were ripping off all around everyone. Bomb explodes, people die, Marines shoot, others die. I'm not seeing any cold, calculated murder -- there wasn't time to plan or even consider seeking revenge (from what I've seen and read).
And "unarmed and unsuspecting civvies?" Again, this has been proven that it's not the case -- the war is against terrorists. They don't stand in the street with flags on their heads for identification. Instead, they ARE small children and women, dressed and co-mingling WITH the terrorists. Until the non-terrorists start pushing back, and literally fighting and throwing the terrorists out of their houses, there is absolutely no way to determine the terrorist from the non-terrorist.
As for being unfairly tried by the media, that's already a done deal. The Media and John Murtha have already heard all the evidence they're interested in. The facts completely no longer matter to them. If NCIS turns up that this was legitimate, nothing will be printed about it again. If the soldiers are tried for ANYTHING, the media will be printing it as headline news.
I stick with my original assessment, as unpleasant as it may be:
It's a war, people die. If you don't want people dead, don't send in the Marines.

OK - where to begin?
You ask me how I can possibly form a view about this being door to door, about the civvies being unarmed, about the event itself being 'in the heat of battle' with 'explosions all around' etc. Let's start with some links then...
How about here first (http://www.wsws.org/articles/2006/may2006/mari-m29.shtml)- an article which describes the door to door executions.
Or possibly here (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/26/AR2006052602069.html) where the Washington Post describes this as "potentially the gravest violation of the law of war by U.S. forces in the three-year-old conflict in Iraq"
Or then of course there is here (http://www.armytimes.com/story.php?f=1-292925-1808360.php) where a former Marine and Vietnam Vet speaks for the Army Times and notes that there was no firefight, no bomb... this was a retalliation in cold blood.
If that's not enough for you there is always here (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060527/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/marines_iraq_investigations) where a defence official confirms that the attack by the marines was 'unjustified'
I could go on and on with endless links to the sources of my views and opinions, but I think you will get the picture from the above.
I personally think it's pretty tough to argue that going door to door, then herding civvies into a room, binding them and then shooting them is much of a 'firefight'.
As I've said though - I will be first in line to admit I was wrong if all the news papers, mass media, defence officials, legal sites and even the army times is wrong in this instance.
But as I said already - I just don't think they are. It smells like the truth to me, unfortunately.

Link #1 is from the World Socialist Web Site. I'm supposed to believe anything they say? Their primary mission is to destroy the United States, so I cannot for one minute believe they will print anything remotely associated with the truth regarding America, sorry.
The Washington Post doesn't say anything about what happened, just that it's serious. If I right now accused you of murdering 250 people, that would be serious. Wouldn't be true, just serious.
The Army Times claims there was no bomb. Okaaaay. I guess everyone just imagined that Humvee exploding, the Marine dying, and the massive injuries received by some.
The last official was "unnamed." Sorry, but those resources are quite often usless. Sometimes they're right, but more often they're crap because they cannot be verified at all.
So sure, if it is as Vinnie says (see initial post), that's one thing. I'm not seeing that. I'm seeing Marines killing people after being attacked. If you don't want people to die, why are there Marines there?
Slightly off the topic, it may be time to get the troops out of there -- because there is no will to win at this point. In other words, if people are going to get upset that Marines are killing people, then get them out of there because people WILL die as long as they're there.
I'm not saying war is a good thing -- I'm saying people die in a war and they always will. If there's no political will to have people die, then stop using the military. And again, if these people are charged, I want to see every pilot who has ever dropped a bomb there charged for "civilian" deaths as well.

It now looks like even more evidence is emerging and more incidents have been found. I suppose people are going to say the BBC are making this up now are they? That the video footage which they have was 'doctored' or 'imagined'?
Like I said before.. it all smells like the truth to me. Sorry Ogre - no disrespect intended to 'honourable' soldiers anywhere, on any side of a conflict - but this is very very far from honourable or battle.

Again, thanks for providing the links to the video.
In this one, the video contradicts itself! They show pictures of the dead children and then say, "There's no evidence from these pictures that the children were shot." Then it goes on to show other people who claim they were!
I know it's bad. It's a horrible thing. Death is not nice. It would be nice if no one had to die. But keep in mind -- there's no way to tell the good guys from the bad guys.
If I put you in a room with a fully loaded machine gun and 10 people all with pistols that all look the same, then tell you that 5 of the 10 are going to shoot you, but I'm not telling you which ones, what do you do? I know many people would prefer to not shoot anyone and instead do nothing. Our military, however, is trained to shoot them all, rather than die themselves.
It's bad and it's ugly. It's horrible. It's war. The ONLY way to stop people from dying is to get the troops out -- which I know is what a large number of people do want.

Stop the ACLU

The above banner and slogan is
quite deceptive and an utter joke to those that are truly aware to the ACLU's workings. Just in the past week the ACLU has launched a
massive campaign against the NSA's efforts to trace terrorist phone calls into the U.S. This campaign with full page ads has even been denounced by media that usually defend the ACLU as completely
lacking in context. In just the last few days the ACLU has pounced at the chance to bash America,
applauding the decision of an EU Court that struck down an anti-terrorism agreement that allows the European Union and the U.S. to share information on airline passengers. And in the same day the ACLU of Florida
came out against a new law that restricts colleges and universities from using state funds for travel to countries classified as terrorist states by the U.S. government.

Gambling in NC
The Democrat-Led North Carolina General Assembly has finally made clear their position on gambling in the state of North Carolina: Gambling shall be allowed clear and fully without limits -- as long as the state runs all gambling interests because they want a large piece of the action.
No other conclusion is logical (but then again, logic is NOT a strong point of North Carolina Democrats) -- just this week the North Carolina "Powerball" lottery to line politician's pockets started and at the same time the legislature
banned video poker, despite the millions in campaign
bribes contributions made by the industry into The Most Exhalted Leader Jim Black's accounts.
While I base all decisions on whether government should do something on whether it makes us more free; the Democrat-led North Carolina General Assembly weighs all decisions on whether or not they get more control and power-- and that's just wrong.

Retain NC Monarch?
I have various news items sent to me using a couple different services. One of the keywords that I look for in news articles is "NC General Assembly." This usually gets me information about the goings-on in the Democrat-led North Carolina General Assembly, but it also occasionally gives me news from The Himalayan Times -- in Kathmandu.
When I got a link to
this article with a headline that said, "NC Wants Ceremonial Monarchy Retained," I didn't know if this was an article from Nepal or from North Carolina. After all, the state of North Carolina has been run by a Democrat for over a hundred years. The governor has been Democrat for 16 straight years. The Senate has NEVER been Republican, only Democrat.
But it turns out the article was about Nepal and not about North Carolina...not that you could really tell the difference...

Bills Filed to Change NC Lottery
Remember the sound bytes, played and repeated over and over again during the passage of the lottery? Repeatedly it was claimed that the lottery proceeds would not be used to REPLACE spending on education? Oops, that sure didn't last long.
Members of the House and Senate are competing to see who can spend the lottery proceeds faster -- before the money is even collected. They've proposed expanding the utterly useless "More at Four" program (it has ZERO measurable educational benefits); give money to the "Job Development Investment Grant Program," pay off bonds for school construction (that's normally done by the counties); and various other uses.
The problem with believing the current crop of legislators in Raleigh is that so few of them seem to tell the truth -- even when they claim "things have changed" from last year to this one. I will be surprised if the "income" from the lottery isn't dumped into the general fund within 2 years.

Fair Tax.
by Ms.Underestimated
This is not just an idea anymore…it’s a movement! The Fair Tax movement.
What else do you call an event about something as dull and boring as the U.S. Tax Code that draws almost 7,000 to a rally? About 4,500 people got inside the doors, which had to be closed due to the 50,000 square foot Gwinnett Convention Center being at capacity at SIX THIRTY P.M.! The rally didn’t start for another hour, yet another almost 3,000 had to be turned away. People drove from Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi, and all over the southeast. Hindsight being 20/20, I’ve heard some of them express disappointment over radio because they only heard the broadcast en route to the rally, and at 6:30 they weren’t even in Georgia yet. They knew they had to turn around and go home, but every single one said that next time, they’ll come a day or two in advance! Some who were turned away simply went to their cars and “tail-gated” with fellow Fair Taxers so they could all listen to the rally as WSB Radio broadcast it live.

NC Minimum Wage Increase
The Minority And Youth Unemployment Act of North Carolina has passed the House
, has already passed the Senate, and is extremely likely to be enacted into law this year. Why? Because the Democrats that run the North Carolina General Assembly are racist, I presume.
The supporters of this law are inaccurately calling it a minimum wage increase. The increase is almost a TWENTY percent increase, from $5.15 to $6.15 an hour. There are almost zero economists that agree this will do anything but reduce employment among those earning the minimum wage -- many of whom are minorities and youth. So the net result of this law will be to decrease the employment level of those people.
Fortunately, North Carolina's economy has been very strong with almost no unemployment, so the results of this will be hardly a blip on the screen -- unless you're an entry-level worker -- you will find jobs harder to find. McDonald's and Wal-Mart will either reduce employment numbers, creating poor service; or they will have to raise prices to pay for the increased expenses.
In addition, Luke Wake
outlines some of the other effects of this horrible law -- making North Carolina even MORE attractive to illegal immigrants!
This just once again shows that the Democrat-controlled North Carolina Legislature is NOT interested in freedom or capitalism, only in government control of all production and industry in the state. That's the Democrat position, no matter how much they lie about it.

I've sat through economics class. I've heard about minimum wage and how raising it would just lead to the cutting of workers. That works except, what if a business cannot afford to cut workers?
I think the NC General Assembly has their minds in the right place. They are looking out for the average American and thinking that $5.15 must be tough for someone to live on.
I'll watch this play out, and I hope it does not turn out "racist" like you claim it will. But if it does, than I guess more reworking of NC's economy will be necessary.
Either way, it's good that they are doing something Americans care about. I think most do want a higher minimum wage.
Posted by: Kevin at May 31, 2006 03:01 PM (rR3mc)
2
What if the business can't pay it? One of two things: the business goes out of business, or it is forced to raise it's prices. If McDonalds has to raise it's prices, those who are working for the newly increased minimum wage won't see any difference -- they make more but things cost more. What's the benefit in that?
I cannot understand anyone who thinks that the minimum wage should be increased. If 6.15 is good, wouldn't $10 an hour be better? Why is $6.15 the "perfect" number? Why not $20 an hour?
In a free country, there would be NO minimum wage laws. They're antiquated relics of the industrial age, useless in today's economy except to buy votes. Why does the government refuse to allow me to work for $2 an hour?
Posted by: Ogre at May 31, 2006 03:05 PM (/k+l4)
3
If businesses can't afford higher wages, they simply hire illegals. Since you don't worry about paying them minimum, no problema.
Posted by: burt at June 01, 2006 02:13 PM (3wX9y)
4
Indeed, that is yet another BAD side effect of raising the minimum wage -- it gives illegals MORE incentive to come to North Carolina and get free schooling, healthcare, and food.
Posted by: Ogre at June 01, 2006 02:25 PM (/k+l4)
5
The increase in minimum wage is really in effect a threefold tax increase:
1) Payroll taxes the employer must withold increase, thus more income to the state;
2) As Ogre said, businesses must either lay off people or raise prices of products. Price increase transates into an increase in sales taxes submitted to the state;
3) if people are laid off, there is an increase in the number of unemployment claims, some of which will be granted. The cost of paying for these also eventually gets transferred to the business in the form of increased SUTA rates and limits.
Bottom line: The only winner is the state.
Posted by: Kevin at June 05, 2006 03:53 PM (S0h74)
6
And that's exactly the intent of the minimum wage increase, no matter what it's supporters claim. Those that claim it will "help" the poor are either idiots or liars. It IS primarily designed to increase state income and control over people.

WHAT THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT SENATE BILL S. 2611
The new immigration bill (the most "sweeping reform in 50 years") S. 2611 is an amalgam of petty causes, illogical provisions, unstructured "solutions" with zero allowances for implementation, and self-contradictory language. Despite the mess, it was passed by self-righteous politicians who repeated the mantra "it's better than doing nothing." This from the same gaggle of do-nothings who outright rejected the House's law enforcement bill.
The Senate bill has our President's full support - this same bill is a derivative of one structured by Ted Kennedy and John McCain, and supported in full by the majority of Democrats. That alone ought to give one pause - President Bush, a
Democrat?

NC Wants More For Bribes
Well, that's not the actual headline of this report, but it's certainly more accurate. Since the state suddenly has a surplus, everyone and their brother wants more cash.
Keep in mind a "surplus" to the state means they collected more tax money than they expected. They took money from the citizens of the state and they are now deciding how to spend more of it, rather than giving it back to the citizens who need it a lot more than government does.
This one report focuses on the NC Commerce Department. A more accurate name for this department might be the Department of Bribes and Kickbacks. They're asking the NC General Assembly to take $30 million of those over-payments of taxes and give it to them -- so they can use it to bribe other businesses to locate and hire people in North Carolina.
Yes, this is government interference with the free market -- but the Democrats who control and run both the Department of Bribes and Kickbacks and the General Assembly aren't interested in the free market or freedom -- they're interested in spending money, however they can get it, and control of the subjects of the state.

A Few Great Carnivals
A few great carnivals to point out for this week:

absolutely awesome Memorial Day Showcase Carnival. You simply must stop by and read that post. And in case you're not familiar with the
Showcase Carnival, it's a place to find all the newest blogs in the world. Be sure to head on over and read at least one this week.
Also, one of my most favorite carnivals is the
Tarheel Tavern. It's a carnival from and about North Carolina and North Carolina bloggers.
This week's carnival is hosted by
Poetic Acceptance, and Erin does a great job, as usual, spreading out to include those who forgot this week!
And another of the carnivals I really like is the Carnival of Liberty. This one highlights the causes of liberty and freedom in America.
New World Man has
this week's carnival up for your reading pleasure.

Katrina vs. Memorial Day
There are now dozens and dozens of news reports about the "remembering" of Katrina victims on Memorial Day. Look, if you lost someone in the hurricane that was Katrina, I'm sorry -- but stop walking all over the memories of good Americans who gave their lives for this country and stop trying to make a moral equivalence between volunteering to die for an idea and living below sea level waiting for a disaster.
The good men who are to be honored on Memorial Day are honored because they sacrificed their lives for America. They, in most cases, volunteered their lives and their sacred honor to protect and defend the United States of America, the greatest country in the world. They willingly gave of their lives to ensure you and I would be able to live in relative freedom. They died to bring freedom to nearly 1 billion people around the world.
The victims of the hurricane lived below sea level, just waiting for a disaster to happen. People have known for decades that the city of New Orleans was a total disaster just waiting to happen. The people there were indeed victims -- they did nothing special for their death -- they were just in the wrong place.
I'm not saying to not remember those who died during a storm -- I'm just saying that you dishonor America's veterans when you honor them at the same time by trying to compare the two groups of people. One group were heroes and one were victims -- they're not the same thing.

"The good men who are to be honored on Memorial Day"
Shouldn't that be "The good men and women" ?
Please don't forget all the women who have sacraficed their lives for America too.

I use the term "men" in this case as in Humans -- all peoples. I absolutely despise "he/she," "Congresswoman" and other such bastardizations of the language. If I intend to leave out one sex, you'll know it.

Legislative Priorities
According to the Democrat-run North Carolina General Assembly, there's not enough money for education, there's not enough money for courts. There's not enough money for law enforcement, and we need toll booths to raise MORE money. There's not enough taxes to pay to build roads; and there's CERTAINLY not enough money to give back the overpayment of taxes.
But there's
$28,000,000.000 to renovate an aquarium. That's what the legislature deems more important than giving you your tax money back.

Memorial Day Morons
You idiots "honoring Katrina victims" and protestors at Arlington National Cemetary, you are morons. You are stupid, useless idiots who profane the memory of those who died for a great cause and an idea. You are ignorant, stupid fools who do not appreciate anything in your life. I would suggest that you be shot for being such ungrateful wretches, but that would be a waste of a bullet.
For soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who have given the ultimate sacrifice; there are those of us who do know:
For those who fight for it, Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.
Those who have fought for freedom, and have lost it, know a sadness and sense a loss beyond bearing.
Freedom rings loudest for those denied Freedom.
And a couple more Memorial Day post links:

It's beyond anti-war. This is personal now. It's anti-American, whether they want to admit it or not.

Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a special day in this country. It's the beginning of summer. It's when the pools open in the north. It is a day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country -- giving those who disagree the freedom to do and say as they please.
Few people realize that today the American Flag is to be flown at half-staff to remember those who have gone before -- but at noon the flag is to be raised to it's full height to celebrate the victory of America over it's enemies over the years.
America -- it is the greatest country in the world -- just ask any of those who have put their life on the line for it, despite all the idiots from inside and outside the country who would claim otherwise.
Much more (and better) Memorial Day coverage around the sphere:

Mustang (a video he sent)
GM (pre-Memorial Day)
GM (photographic Memorial Day)
JCrue at the Wide Awakes
TMH's Bacon Bits

Euphoric Reality -- with a song
Social Sense
Stop the ACLU has a pile of other links
Combs Spouts Off
The WrightWing
Cathouse Chat
Also today -- at 11:00am (local time) is the time for a national prayer for peace. At 3:00pm (local time) it is a national moment of remembrance. I shall be participating, and I hope you shall, too.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to make preparations for the raising of the flag to it's highest point.

NC Senate Budget Explodes
The North Carolina Senate has approved an $18 MILLION budget for the state of North Carolina. Based on North Carolina figures, there's about 3.9 million workers in the state (and that's a very high estimate, assuming nearly all people aged 18-65 are employed).
That means each person has to pay about $4.75, on average, into the budget (and yes, I'm well aware that most pay much, much more, it's just to average it across the board for this example). However, with a population of 8.5 million, the state is paying out about $2.20 per person. Therefore, everyone who is working is paying for their "benefits" from the state AND an entire addition person.
Why is that? Why am I forced at gunpoint to pay for another person to exist? Forget the actual dollar amounts, that's not important -- what's significant is the percentages -- I am forced to pay for another person and that's wrong. Politicians always run based on how much they "bring home to the district" -- well the numerical average shows that people who work are paying over TWICE what they're getting. Want my vote? Run on a platform that says you'll stop using government force to take from me.
