Katrina vs. Memorial Day

There are now dozens and dozens of news reports about the "remembering" of Katrina victims on Memorial Day. Look, if you lost someone in the hurricane that was Katrina, I'm sorry -- but stop walking all over the memories of good Americans who gave their lives for this country and stop trying to make a moral equivalence between volunteering to die for an idea and living below sea level waiting for a disaster.

The good men who are to be honored on Memorial Day are honored because they sacrificed their lives for America. They, in most cases, volunteered their lives and their sacred honor to protect and defend the United States of America, the greatest country in the world. They willingly gave of their lives to ensure you and I would be able to live in relative freedom. They died to bring freedom to nearly 1 billion people around the world.

The victims of the hurricane lived below sea level, just waiting for a disaster to happen. People have known for decades that the city of New Orleans was a total disaster just waiting to happen. The people there were indeed victims -- they did nothing special for their death -- they were just in the wrong place.

I'm not saying to not remember those who died during a storm -- I'm just saying that you dishonor America's veterans when you honor them at the same time by trying to compare the two groups of people. One group were heroes and one were victims -- they're not the same thing.

3 "The good men who are to be honored on Memorial Day"

Shouldn't that be "The good men and women" ?

Please don't forget all the women who have sacraficed their lives for America too.

4 I use the term "men" in this case as in Humans -- all peoples. I absolutely despise "he/she," "Congresswoman" and other such bastardizations of the language. If I intend to leave out one sex, you'll know it.
