George Washington Says

I just read this quote from Principled Discovery that I hadn't heard before (or that I can recall). I like it:

One person once asked George Washington if he thought God was on his side. His reply is reported to have been: "It is not that God should be on our side, but that we be on His.

Dana has also started a discussion about ancient customs of rights and responsibilities. Take a peek, there's some nice information there.

1 I posted a comment attributed to Jay Leno, which paraphrased is that "with all the hurricanes, earthquakes, mudslides and firestorms we've had, isn't this a bad time to take God out of the pledge?"

2 I don't understand the title. George Washington stays where? Besides all the places
he slept, that is.

3 OK, that's it. No more chardonnay for me before supper. Perhaps then I'll learn to read.

Sorry.

4 Excellent one, Dagney!

And Birdwoman, you had me wondering there! It wouldn't be the first time I got my spelling wrong in a post title!

5 A really good one. Too many people ask God to be on their side that they tend to forget checking first whether they themselves are really on God's side.

6 It's really amazing when you think about the implications on that one, isn't it? God can do anything -- so why aren't you with Him?

7 Hey, thanks for the link! I wish I knew for sure whether that quote were truly from Mr. Washington, but I like it anyway : )It does give pause for thought.

8 Indeed, it's a good quote and thing to keep in mind even if G.W. didn't say it!
