$100 Billion+ for research
Well gee, why not? North Carolina is about to start spending quite literally an unlimited amount of money for biotechnology research. They want $29,000,000.00 per year forever. Why? Well, because they're government and Democrats and academics in government only one thing: more money to spend.
Is there any evidence that this new biotechnology institute will produce anything useful? Well, no, actually. Sure, there's value to biotechnology research, but why should government be the only one to do it? If there's actual, real value to this sort of research, you can rest assured that private individuals will be more than happy to conduct the research at ZERO cost to the taxpayer. But again, it's Democrats and academics, so zero to government is BAD in their minds.
Don't complain, just work harder. Remember, the NC government that is about to spend this money every year FOREVER is already in the hole over a billion dollars for this year's budget. Gee, what's another $20-30 million? They'll just raise taxes one more time.

Q. How many Libertarians does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A. None. The Market will take care of it.

Have you see the new ads up there on the left side? At the top of the left column is the space rented out to my BlogExplosion tenant. This week it's Soapbox Jury. This is an interesting blog, as it appears to be all review-based:
Random reviews relevant to you! No nonsense views on different websites, products, services and ideas.
So if you need some randomness, take a peek.
Oh, and if you've got a product or service that you want reviewed by professionals (and that's NOT a dig at Soapbox Jury); check out

A Question for Racists
I have a question that I need answered. According to head racist Jesse Jackson, uttering the dreaded "n-word" is a "hate crime" and should be punished as such. However, it's only a hate crime when a white person utters it. It's perfectly okay when a black person says that word.
I need to know the exact level of pigment that's required in one's skin to where the word becomes a "hate crime." After all, I don't want to participate in these
made-up crimes, so I need to know. And at what time of year must that pigment be measured? In other words, some people have darker pigment in their skin in the summer. Should skin color, when determining hate crime status, be measured at only one time of year? Are there people who might actually fluctuate between having enough pigment and then not enough? If so, are those people guilty of a hate crime only when they say the verbotten word at some times of the year?
Jesse Jackson is a racist moron. And yes, if you follow him or support him in any way, you are a racist moron, too.

Posted by: William Teach at November 27, 2006 11:29 PM (doAuV)

Is that the secret? Maybe there's a formula where a certain amount of skin pigment + cash to Jesse = free use of certain words. Underneath that threshold and you're committing a hate crime.

Why stop with the N word?
Is ginny, wop, dago, spaghetti bender not "degrading" to Italians? There are hundreds of words that are "degrading" to wusses of all nationalities.
Are we to believe that only blacks can be offended by a word? We can expand this to religious beliefs and sexual orientations too.
Farrakhan and Sharpton can publicly call jews kikes, but that is not hate speech?
I will have to give this topic careful consideration,,,,,,if I can stop laughing.

You're close, Tomslick -- blacks can only be offended by the word if someone NON-black says it. That's why I'm trying to find out exactly how much pigment in one's skin allows one to utter the word.

If I were in charge of government, this is how I would direct ALL government flunkies employees to answer the phone:
Good Morning. Thank you for calling an agency of the United States Government.
Press "1" to continue in English, or

Blame Edwards?
It's no secret that John Edwards wants to run for president in 2008. The only unknown is if he will go up against Hillary or not. But he's been actively campaigning since he lost his last election.
So, since it was Rush Limbaugh's fault (and all conservative talk radio and all conservatives) when the Federal building was bombed in Oklahoma City, then, by the exact same standards, John Edwards and his support of "Wake Up Wal-Mart" is directly responsible for
teens bombing Wal-Mart, right?
Let's watch and see if Mr. Edwards has any comment, much less any condemnation, for this domestic
left-wing bombing.

Taxpayer Website Award
Oh, joy. Big news. Huge news. An award of merit for website design has been won by North Carolina’s Eastern Region (NCER). Ready for the taxpayer part? Let's take a peek at who paid for this site that won this "prestigious award:"
Southern Economic Development Council's (SEDC)
Market Force, Inc.
Greenfield, an economic development consulting firm
NC Department of Travel, Tourism and Sports
And yes, every single one of those groups was paid for 100% with taxpayer cash. Every dollar was earned by someone who worked, taken by government, and given away to earn this award.
So, what is NCER and SEDC? NCER is "one of the seven regions created by the NC General Assembly to promote economic development in their respective regions." SEDC is "the largest regional economic development association in North America." Again, completely and totally bought and paid for by working people.
Tell me again how government doesn't have enough money and is efficient and has any remote interest in anything related to any sort of freedom. Go ahead, try and convince me.

Saturday After Thanskgiving
Well, it's the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It's time to do the traditional: put up the Christmas decorations. As each year goes by, I seem to end up with more and more outdoor lights. I'm not sure I can get them all up in one day any more, so I'll have to start before lunch. This year the neighbors seem to have put up a challenge.
Those who have read here before may remember my pictures from last year -- and the candy canes lining the street. Well, the folks to my left have put up their decorations already, and they've lined THEIR house with candy canes. Now my lighted canes are taller than theirs, but they might have a few more than I do. This simply will not do.
I think a trip to Lowes may be in order this afternoon after the decorations are up...

Sam, I never measured the amount of draw with the snow globe. I only run mine until about 10pm, so it only runs about 4 hours a night. With a 2-prong outlet, I can't imagine it draws much.
Cheryl, the Griswalds are my heroes. The only reason I don't put up that many lights is because I haven't had enough money to buy that many (yet).

Waterfronts and Fishing
A question that the North Carolina Legislature absolutely HAS to know the answer to (and will spend an unlimited amount of taxpayer money to find out the answer):
To what extent is the high price of waterfront property to blame for the loss of fish houses along the coast?
How about the proper question, if this were a truly free country:
What the hell business is it of government?
Yes, yet another horrible example of a government completely and totally out of control. Why does it make any difference at all if property prices go up because of the price of tea in China? Does it matter if "fish houses" are leaving the coast because the land is too expensive? What business is it of government how much ANY land sells for?
But don't worry, you can rest assured that the all-knowing Democrat-run government in North Carolina will find out the answers -- and they will spend as much of your money as they need to get the answers. You might need to work a little harder because they're currently in a $1 billion defect for the
coming year, but they're going to spend this money anyway however they want. So prepare yourself for MORE tax increases this year by the NC Democrats, because they need to know why low-rent houses are disappearing on high-cost waterfront property.

Miami vs. Detriot
John Kitna? Look out. I think you're going to get to meet Mr. Taylor up close and personal this afternoon. Miami may have pretty much zero offense, but they're winning with their defense. The Lions have given up 28 sacks on the year (5th worse in the league). Miami is 10th in sacks with 26 on the season. I'm seeing a few more coming up today!

You can see how I've progressed, and if you're interested in some light, COMPLETELY unedited reading, I've put most of what I've done online. With only 10,000 words to go, now it really feels like it's going downhill and I can see the end. Now I just have to make sure there's enough story left to make it to the end!

I would like to congratulate you for your efforts and I must say I don't fully understand the point of a writing contest under the timeclock, what is it that the organizers evaluate: your writing speed or the quality of your novel?

It's all about the speed. The idea is that there's a lot of people who would like to write a novel out there. But when it comes time to sit down and write it, that's not so easy. By putting a time limit on it, it gives incentive to actually sit down and write the darn things.
So no, it's not based on quality -- in fact I haven't gone back and edited one single word -- the idea is to get the words on the paper and then in December or later, I can go back and do the editing!

Congratulations on your preliminary goal! That is pretty amazing. Remember to give yourself some breaks now and then to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome.

Thanks! Typically, I've been taking the weekends off. I ended up taking all of the Thanksgiving weekend off, so I've got about 6,000 words left in the next couple days!

Murder or go to Jail
So, which do you choose? You are told by the government that you must either murder someone who cannot fight back -- and it will be easy, no violence involved -- or you will go to jail. On what charge, you ask? Assault. That's right, in the UK, if you REFUSE to kill someone, YOU could be charged with assault.
Be thankful this year, as you celebrate Thanksgiving in America, that you're not in the UK and not on the "unfavourable list" of the government -- or your doctor might be ordered to kill you. But don't worry, they won't just kill dissidents, they'll only kill the "undesirable" to "save costs."
The Hippocratic Oath used to say
I will not give a fatal draught to anyone if I am asked, nor will I suggest any such thing.
The current British (and international version) looks something like this:
I will act in the patient's best interest when providing medical care.
And according to the British courts, YOUR best interest is not necessarily staying alive. Aren't you glad you have government to make your descisions for you and decide what's best for you? It's not like you'd know, only government is capable of making that descision.
Since that oath is too hard for these doctors and government to understand or apply, how about something a little simpler:
Primum non nocere (First, do no harm).
Wouldn't it be nice to find a doctor that prescribed to that principle instead of "First, obey government?"

Ogre's Driving Tips
Well folks, if you're here checking out the latest from Ogre before you head out of the holiday weekend, thanks for stopping by! And if you're just wandering around because you're NOT heading out, thanks, too. But before you get behind the wheel (whether you're driving far away or not) two quick driving tips for this well-traveled weekend for you:
1. If the weather is so bad that you can only go 40-45 mph, by all means, please do so. Do not go a speed at which you are not comfortable with your vehicle. However, please don't do this on the interstate where the speed limit is 65 and everyone is going 70. It's you that's going to cause the accident, that's just not safe.
2. If you're NOT driving anywhere this weekend, this tip is for you: Keep in mind that even though you're not going anywhere, EVERYONE else is! So when you head down to the corner store for the milk that you forgot, keep in mind that 1 out of every 3 cars you see is someone who really doesn't know where they are. They don't know about that turning lane. They're too confused to put their turn signal on. So, especially local drivers, take a little extra patience out there with you -- everyone else really IS lost!

Also, if you are from the North, you need to learn the difference between tree types and rock sizes, otherwise you will not be able to understand the directions we give down South

By changing your driving habits you can improve fuel economy up to 37 percent right away (depending on how you drive). Combine several tips and perform routine maintenance and you will save real dollars, not just pennies.

Don't Cheat in NC
Well, you shouldn't cheat no matter where you are. But in NC especially, you can be held financially liable if you cheat with someone who is married. And now the NC Supreme Court has ruled that the jilted spouse has 3 years after discovering the infidelity to sue.
I know many people think this is a bad rule. However, this is one of the few areas of NC law that actually promotes freedom and allows government to function as it should -- as an abitrator of broken contracts. If you consider a marriage between two people as a contract (and yes, it's really more, but legally to the state, it is a contract); and if one person breaches that contract, they should be allowed by the state to seek legal redress.
You don't want to get sued? Fine, don't cheat on your spouse. It really is as simple as that.

Slow Mind Day
Sorry folks, my mind just isn't up to much today. I think it's getting burned out as I participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). In case you hadn't noticed, up there in the upper left corner you can see my progress. Clicking on the image shows you the daily progress (I know you don't really care, but it keeps me going). I'm at 37,000+ words now, and since I'm past the 35K mark, it's supposed to be all downhill. Well, it might be going downhill, but I think the big boulder is right behind me!
Feel free to talk amongst yourselves.
Oh wait, I remember what I was going to ask! You know those local radio shows that never seem to have enough time to get all the callers in? Have you ever listened to one and wanted to say something, but didn't have a phone with you? I was thinking about putting an afternoon post/thread up each day to continue to discussions of the local radio show played on WBT -- the Jeff Katz show. I wonder if anyone would comment. And if you're not local, you can listen to the feed
on the web.

Nice pictures! I could, indeed, get many ideas for writing from them.
Followed by quite the heavy topic, eh? Actually, the free state already has a media outlet (printed newspaper) in Keene...

Democrats Apologize for being Democrats
The Charlotte Observer attempts to apologize for being a Democrat mouthpiece...but only for being a Democrat mouthpiece in 1898, not for being Democrat and Socialist in today's political campaigns.
What value can be placed on an "apology" made by people who had absolutely nothing to do with actions over 100 years ago? And they're apologizing to the black citizens that they help kill and drive from power. Apparently the Observer is unaware that they're all dead now.
In reality, this apology is nothing more than a precursor to support of yet more socialism and more strong-arm tactics and more support of killing and imprisonment of people they don't like. This is a result of the current Democrat theme -- taking money from those who work and giving it to those who do not. This is the Observer firing another salvo in support of giving "reparations" to the victims of the 1898 race riots.
Now keep in mind, in those riots, it was the Democrats who were killing and running blacks and Republicans out of town. It was the Observer and Democrats who wanted blacks dead. But now the Observer wants the state to give cash to descendants of the dead and oppressed blacks -- just more socialism.
Look, Observer, if you want to make reparations, how about YOU pay the cash to Republicans? Don't take my money at gunpoint and give it to blacks who will continue to support the Democrats who took their political power from them.
Then again, I've a better idea. How about we try a new political system where people are free. Wouldn't that be neat?

My ancestors were from the Free State of Jones County Mississippi. We were always Republicans. I wonder if we could sue the DNC for reparations????
