40,000 and counting

Hey folks, I'm almost there! Today I crossed the 40,000-word mark with the NaNoWriMo challenge. In case you missed it, this is a challenge to write a 50,000-word novel in just one month. You can see how I've progressed, and if you're interested in some light, COMPLETELY unedited reading, I've put most of what I've done online. With only 10,000 words to go, now it really feels like it's going downhill and I can see the end. Now I just have to make sure there's enough story left to make it to the end!

4 I would like to congratulate you for your efforts and I must say I don't fully understand the point of a writing contest under the timeclock, what is it that the organizers evaluate: your writing speed or the quality of your novel?

5 It's all about the speed. The idea is that there's a lot of people who would like to write a novel out there. But when it comes time to sit down and write it, that's not so easy. By putting a time limit on it, it gives incentive to actually sit down and write the darn things.

So no, it's not based on quality -- in fact I haven't gone back and edited one single word -- the idea is to get the words on the paper and then in December or later, I can go back and do the editing!

6 Congratulations on your preliminary goal! That is pretty amazing. Remember to give yourself some breaks now and then to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome.

7 Thanks! Typically, I've been taking the weekends off. I ended up taking all of the Thanksgiving weekend off, so I've got about 6,000 words left in the next couple days!
