MT is Editing My Posts.
Pixy knows about this, so I suspect there's little to be done (because Pixy can fix everything), but basically my blog refuses to post anything over 8-10 lines.
So I'm writing what tends to look like blog haiku. But it's been about a week, and my frustration is starting to build.
Please help before I turn back to being a serial killer.

Not sure what testing you've already done, but if you haven't already tried these:
- try a regular length post to your blog. Confirm it fails to post. Immediately attempt to post the same thing here on Munuviana. Tell us the result?
- create a new author on your blog. Attempt to post the same too long post as new author, and tell us the result.
- have you tried posting from different browser versions?
Exactly what happens when you can't post. Error dialogue? Time out?
What OS are you running? Browser version?
It's just, the more of us know exactly what's happening (or not) the better chance someone might recognise the cause.

Oh yea, and if you're going back into the serial killing business, can I aim you at a few deserving targets?

I have no idea what's going on, but I don't think it's Movable Type that's the problem. After all, all the other Munus are using the same copy of MT, and hardly any of them have turned into serial killers.
It looks like some bizarre interaction of... thingies.
What I might suggest is using a blogging program like Ecto instead of your browser.
Can you post anything longer in Munuviana, or do you get the same problem?

I just attempted to post the same medium-size post (three short paragraphs) that my own blog keeps rejecting. Natually, it didn't like it, so I came over here and made the same attempt. Result:
"Safari can't open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt.cgi” because it could not load any data from this location."
Nothing new.

(I'm also being limited in how long my comments are; this is a continuation of the comment above)
I'm using System 10.3.7, and running Safari. Though I did try to post using Explorer, and it was no dice that way, either. (Slightly different phrasing on the error message.)

I also created a new author in my weblog, and attempted to post the same thing over at Little Miss Attila. Wouldn't work. (Same error message:
Safari can't open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt.cgi” because it could not load any data from this location.

I suspect that your computer is kerflugelated. (A technical term meaning that there is something wrong with it.) For all I can tell, your voodoo doll thing could be right.
Try downloading Ecto and see if that works.
The other thing I can do is give you an MT3 login and see if that works better. I'll do that now and email you.

Ask someone else (e.g. Pixy) to try posting to your blog. If it works, then it's your computer.

Of course (sorry--slight case of work this week created a delay getting back here).
See if you can find a 10-line poem or something--it has to be that or a respectable-size paragraph to trigger THE PROBLEM.
Thanks!

Slighly off-topic, but I cannot seem to locate the discussion on this: turning off comments/trackbacks after a month or so.
Can it be done utilizing Munuvian technology?
The suck side to working on a U.S. Navy base is that I cannot access my MuNu e-mail which notifys me of trackbacks - specifically, that crap that appears in the middle of the night that would take me several hours of hunting to locate without the e-mail notification.
Can it be done and if so, how? I'm thinking that comments/trackbacks should be killed after 30 days....

Mikey:
Can you access the admin page of your blog from on base?
If so, you can use a feature of the Blacklist to quickly check for and remove spam trackbacks in one go.
Go to http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-blacklist.cgi after you are signed in.
Click on the DeSpam link at the top of the page, then use the radio buttons and drop-down list to tell Blacklist that you want to see the X most recent trackbacks on your blog. (You can also list comments the same way.)
Normally, this is used to find comments or TBs containing a particular spam word or regexp, but the 3rd option will give you a listing of all comments/TB's (up to the quantity you specified), with info about the commenter, Ip address, URL etc., along with a checkbox to select if you want to easily delete specific comments.
Just search for the last 50 or 100 tb's, and uncheck the real ones, then click the remove & rebuild relevant entries button, and you're done.
Blacklist will also give you a list of the URL's it found in the trackbacks, and ask if you want to add them to the blacklist. Unless you're really comfortable with what problems to look for before blacklisting, I'd say hold off on adding any strings. I'm still trying to find time to write up a tutorial on what to watch out for when using the Blacklist, but until then, just use it to check & clean for yourself.

Using w.blogger
I am trying to pull my content from Blog-City to Mu.Nu. I figured out how to get w.blogger to pull down my entries from Blog-City. If I could set it up to post to my mu.nu blog, then I would be in business. Can I do that? It is asking for an api url in the configuration. Or the API server with servername, page and port.
For the api endpoint I have tried the following with no luck:
http://blog.mu.nu/bar/mt-xmlrpc.cgi
http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-xmlrpc.cgi
Any ideas?

Blogsnot anti-censorship tip?
I don't know if anyone is still keeping up with this thread...but...
If you enclose the -body- tag with -noembed- and -/noembed- with "-" being "< and >", it will get rid of the toolbar....thus denying anyone the opportunity to
censor "report" your blog content... just a tip.

Problems
I and my readers have had several problems with my blog. Repeatedly comments, trackbacks and uploads do not work. Individuals who have left comments before are unable to sometimes and even today when attempting to get the t/b url I was told 'forbidden-404'. With uploads I often receive a 'bad gateway' error message. Everything in the template is correct and all of the weblong configurations are as well.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had a trackback problem the other day. I couldn't ping Jen and Harvey for their birthday posts. No idea what was wrong - just got the generic "The pooch has been screwed. Check the log." message but couldn't open the log.
Posted by: Jim @ at September 16, 2005 06:50 PM

The log has got too big again. I'll clear it out.
The usual problem for pings is that they've been automatically closed due to incoming spam. I've reduced the amount of time they stay closed, and we'll see how that works.
Unfortunately, our grand plan to simply stop trackbacks on old posts doesn't work, because MT apparently takes no notice of that setting. I'll see if I can fix that this weekend.

Yes I will email you the message the next time it happens. It will go through periods of it's work and then it doesn't. It's not one day it's fine and the next it's not.
Also, the Remember Me for comments often doesn't work for people using IE. Any suggestions?

Calling All Macintosh Munuveteers!
Zendo Deb is having a little problem with a post on the Cotillion, but only with people using Safari. My Mac has been in the closet since I moved house, so could any of our Mac users help out?
I have a post on the Cotillion at http://cotillion.mu.nu/archives/118595.php
It is a copy (nearly exact) of a post on my personal blog at TFS Magnum
I am told that the images are not showing up in Safari on the mu.nu site, but are showing up on the other site.
Everything is constructed using standard html anchor and image tags, with the align= prarameter specified.
Does anyone else with Safari see this and does anyone have an explanation?
Thanks everyone!

Is there a quick way to pull up the trackbacks to my blog and delete the disgusting ones? I've gotten some really gross kiddie-pr0n TBs in the last day or so ("preteen bikinis" and "pedophilia erotic stories" are self-evidently ones that should be deleted).

Further to what Pixy's referring to:
Go to http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-blacklist.cgi after you are signed in.
Click on the DeSpam link at the top of the page, then use the radio buttons and drop-down list to tell Blacklist that you want to see the X most recent trackbacks on your blog. (You can also list comments the same way.)
Normally, this is used to find comments containing a particular spam word or regexp, but the 3rd option will give you a listing of all comments, with info about the commenter, Ip address, URL etc., along with a checkbox to select if you want to easily delete specific comments.
Since you alredy know some of the common words that are in the problem trackbacks, you can also tell the blacklist to just search the last several hundred tb's for those words. I'd recommend searching for each main word seperately.
Does that get you what you need?

Qumana blog text editor
Does anyone use the Qumana blog editor? I thought I'd give it a try, but when I go to configure the publisher it asks for "Host" and "Endpoint" -- and I don't know what to put there for Munuvia. This is the only direction I get from the Qumana User's Guide (scroll down to "Blog Settings" for potentially useful information). It obviously assumes a higher level of expertise than I have.
Thoughts, ideas?

Dave:
Here's my guess for what those settings would need to be:
Server: Movable Type
Host: www.blog.mu.nu
Endpoint: /mt.cgi
Port 80
Your username & password will be the normal ones for MT, and NOT the ones for your Cpanel (for some people they're different)
Worth a shot, anyway. Lemme know if it doesn't work, & we can consult Master Misa.

Dave, just to be certain. When I list blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-xmlrpc.cgi, I mean literally that address, not replacing the word "blog" with your blog name.
I'm assuming that's how you entered it, but wanted to check to be sure.
Other than that, I'll have to wait 'til I get home tonight to see if I can be any more help, or maybe Tris can troubleshoot from the results you're seeing so far.

Tris Hussey of Qumana actually contacted me and cleared it up almost immediately. I just had to enter http://munuviana.mu.nu/ in the autoconfigure dialog (under Configure Publishers), and it asked me straight away for my username and password.
It works fine now. This will give me the opportunity to try out Qumana. It looks pretty good, so far, though I can't find where it would let me do draft posts without publishing them to my blog.

Just One More Reason i'm Glad To Be A Munuvian
Blogger has instituted a quasi-censorship program.
When a person visiting a blog clicks the "Flag?" button in the Blogger Navbar, it means they believe the content of the blog may be potentially offensive or illegal. We track the number of times a blog has been flagged as objectionable and use this information to determine what action is needed. This feature allows the blogging community as a whole to identify content they deem objectionable.
This disturbing development is totally separate from their policy regarding spam blogs. This is much more big brotherish.
Blogger excuses this quasi-censorship by referring to the
"Wisdom of Crowds" concept. That's complete bullshit. They might have an argument if they gave readers the option to designate a blog as "unobjectionable." But even that would be problematic, because it's always more likely that a offended person would be motivated to click on a flag than someone who's not offended by content. You're going to see a situation where hypersensitive people or those with intolerant political viewpoints will have a kind of "hecklers veto" on blog content.
This is a bad idea, and totally goes against what i thought was Blogger's most important asset, the total freedom it gave to its users.

If I remember correctly, because of our "group" MT setup, all of MuNu is limited to one post every half hour for pings. I think that's pingage to a certain log site, not other blogs. Since as a group we post more often than once every half hour, we all get that same message.

That's usually because incoming trackbacks are blocked due to a spam flood. They come back after five minutes (assuming the spam has stopped by then.
If it keeps happening, let me know and I'll poke it with my +2 Stick of Poking.

mu.nu back on Google News
Good news! After months of begging, Google News finally made The Jawa Report a Google News contributor again. You'll recall they yanked the site because of hate speech, whatever that meant.
Eh, so what, you say?
Due to a technical glitch at Google News, any post that is either linked at
The Jawa or any trackback sent to my site by a mu.nu domain is also listed at Google News. Shhhhh.
Don't expect a ton of traffic, but a little traffic is better than none. So, if you think you have a post that's 'newsie', just send us a trackback and wait for the
flood trickle of traffic provided by this
unbias source of information.
UPDATE: In the spirit of
let's screw those Leftist bastards at Google News I've linked five mu.nu blogs at today's
Festival of the Fatwas. All other munuvians are invited to send a trackback.

I'm in the middle of an instalanche at the moment, and it occurs to me: Would it be hard to set up a Munuvian news site, with, say the top 25 (50, 100...?) posts of the day? Or maybe a sidebar thingy?

We have something like that. Most groups do. Check out the Communities at Truth Laid Bear.
If you think you have newsworthy material you might want to get registered with Blogger News Network. They've been registered with Google for months...thanks to me.

Calling Any More Clever Code Person Than I!
OK, so even though I am a looooooong way away from New Orleans, I do still love the place and want to help. I've donated to a people charity, and now I've donated to a non-people charity. On the non-people charity, the ASPCA, they have a page to create a "donate" button (the ASPCA is way ahead of its time, really).
I want to link this picture:
And have it clickable so that it goes to this page:
https://secure.hsus.org/01/disaster_relief_fund_2005?source=drfhb4
Only I am completely useless at code, and so have pasted the pic on my side with a clickable link beneath it. Is there a Code God that can provide me with the exact code I could paste on my site so that a person just has to click on the sidebar pic to go directly to the web donation page?
I would be most grateful.
So would Fido, I'm sure.
Thanks

-H

Here you go Helen (although the way you're already doing it is fine too!):
<a href="https://secure.hsus.org/01/disaster_relief_fund_2005?source=drfhb4">
<___ border="0" alt="link to Humane Society's Katrina Pet Rescue" title="Click here to donate to the Humane Society's Katrina Pet Rescue" src="http://munuviana.mu.nu/archives/120x240_katrina.gif" /></a>
Copy and paste that all in one chunk.

Having theme music. Possible?
Is there a way to have an mp3 play automagically whenever my blog is visited? I've looked at the useful thingies list and don't see any info on this.
I found an mp3 of the opening theme to the movie
Zandalee. Ever since I saw it on HBO, over ten years ago, I've wanted this music. I'm listening to again right now. It's very dixieland jazz New Orleansy 3-minute-long masterpiece and I'd lve to have this play on my blog. Can it be done?

Sure it can be done!
Here's a site that tells you how and gives your readers the option of shutting it off: HyperGurl.

Thanks, Tiffany! I got the html from your link, then realized I need an FTP program to upload an mp3. I downl0aded* one as a .zip file and now can't do a thing with it. "What program do you want to use to open this file?" Hell if I know. I haven't done this stuff in 2 years. I'm lost. **sigh**
*(The word in question seems to be banned as "questionable content".)

Download* a copy of Winzip. It's free to try - the trial used to last forever, don't know if it still does.
* Fixed.

Spork:
Just be aware that a lot of people really, really hate it when a site they open plays music by default.
To me it's a perfect example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

Mmmm, good point, L&D. Maybe I'll just put it up as a concole with the option to play it or not.

Deleting Comments?
I just moved from Blogger where you could delete a comment on a post. There doesn't seem to be that option on MT. Am I missing something?

MT gives you Godlike powers of deletion. No comment, ping or even post is safe from your destructive powers. MWAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!!!
Um...yeah. Anyway, open the post for editing. Scroll down below the SAVE button area. All of the comments and pings on the post will be in sections down there. Check the box next to the comment(s) that you want to delete and click the DELETE button.
What's even more fun though is you can click on the comment itself instead of the checkbox. This opens it up for editing. The possibilities are endless at that point.

Thanks, that's awesome. I even finally figured out how to ban IP addresses.
I'm going to have some fun with that "editing comments" think.

The Mu-roll
I went through the blogs that have been set up recently and found a couple that weren't on the Munu blogroll. Those are in now.
If there are any blogs that should be on the roll but aren't, please let me know.
Thanks!

Planned Outrage: Saturday 3rd September
Yes, kids, it's that time of the week again. Due to the failure of last week's outage (the replacement disk didn't work), we will be having another run at it this weekend.
Same time as before: 5AM CST Saturday. It's about the quietest time for munu, so hopefully no-one will even notice.
Unless things go wrong... Which
never happens.

Katrina Blog Relief Day
Tomorrow, the blogosphere will attempt to turn its sweaty keyboards for good. Hugh Hewitt challenged bloggers to help suvivors by raising funds through blogging. Instapundit then suggested a date and our beloved NZ Bear will be Tallying the Results.
I and others will be auctioning/selling items in the hopes of raising additional funds for the hurricane victims. Please join us in this global effort. Thanks!

Thanks Michele! I'll pitch in if I can, but I'll likely be tied up at work tomorrow.
Amazon is now taking donations for the American Red Cross hurricane relief operations, so if like me you have money but no time it's a good place to go.

really??? I thought they weren't going to....
In any case I too will be participating tomorrow, and I have a click-through link to donate for UMCOR, the United Methodist relief org. They give 100% of your donation to wherever you want it sent, in this case, the gulfcoast....

I wanted to sell stuff, but I don't think anyone wants the crap I have. Instead I'll be doing an all-day blog-a-thon, including matching cash donations.

Folks,
Thanks for the relief efforts. Fortunately for me, I did not suffer much damage, other than the loss of two small trees. I have many friends with no power and none expected for several weeks. I have other friends who are waiting to hear from loved ones in the New Orleans area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's weird. I now know what is meant by the term, "survivors guilt". Again, I am one of the lucky ones and it's hard to watch those around me go through so much grief and aggravation. It's also hard to watch the looters, price gougers, etc, without thinking how much fun it would be to stomp a mudhole in their ass and then walk it dry. It's amazing that so much kindness can coexist with some much evil. That is the way of the world, I guess.
Anyway, thanks for the fundraising efforts. Believe me when I tell you that it is much appreciated.
