Ace of Spades Pet Thread, September 28

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

A Remarkable Cat Story

Last week, gourmand du jour left us a message in the comments to the Thread before the Gardening Thread, which I missed until too late for last week.

28: I may miss all the other threads today due to various necessary activities, but I do hope the pet thread will include this story of the cat who disappeared at Yellowstone and somehow made its way to Roseville, CA (~800 miles) and was reunited with its people in Salinas.

Cat left at Yellowstone makes way back to Northern California

A California family is surprised after their beloved cat Rayne Beau vanished on a trip to Yellowstone National Park and likely trekked around 800 miles back toward home before being found.

The couple, Susanne and Benny Anguiano, told KSBW in Salinas that they had taken their cats on previous trips, but that this time, something scared Rayne Beau and he ran off into the forest in early June.

The Anguianos spent their days searching for Rayne Beau but ultimately had to make the decision to return home without him. . .

Rayne Beau was likely already heading home on his own. Two months after that June trip, a woman in Roseville found Rayne Beau and took him to the local SPCA, where they were able to get information from his microchip and contact the owners.

“This lady who found him and rescued him, she’s just an angel. She even said he looked like he was not going to make it much longer,” Susanne said.

From Yellowstone to Roseville is about 835 miles, and just another 200 miles separates Roseville from Salinas. . .

He lost 40% of his body weight on the trip. There may be before and after photos if you dare follow a link to Facebook.

Tough cat ! Dedicated Cat! Dedicated humans, too!

bonzo oo.jpg

Meet Bonzo, a feral cat who likes to nap on my couch. We’re about three months into feeling each other out. He’s a good little fellow, but I’ve only let him sleep inside overnight one time. I think I’ll start with an outdoor home for him, and then see what a Chicago winter brings.

Thanks for the Pet Morons weekly thread. I am a regular lurker.

Bonzo looks like a "Bonzo". Lucky cat to have found you.

new pupp hadriann.jpg

This is our most recent arrival. Fitz (Soyara's Justart Son of Fortune) is a four-month-old puppy from an "oops" litter in California out of Delilah's sister Dot (Ch. Soyara's Crowning Glory).

Fitz is cute as a button, very friendly and is learning quickly about the perquisites and privileges of being a house dog.

Looks like a great pup! I noticed the toys . . .

6 Thank you K.T.
I read the entire post!

I have a situation similar to Bonzo except it's our friend's cat across the street. Trumpy was the dude who was injured a few weeks back but he's much better now.

He comes to visit when the sun goes down. He comes inside for awhile. I have a towel on the porch for him to sleep. A little bit of food and water. He stays there a chunk of the night and disapppears during the day.

Anyways, small cats under 10 pounds. What shoukd I get for flea protection? We're moving into October in Canada but I'd still feel better if he had something. I'll pay. Neighbor's are fine with this.

Thanks. He's such a beautiful, sweet, friendly cat. His Mom and aunt chose to become outdoor cats. He was born into that but is such a social cat.....

11 Afternoon, Pet Folken!

Yes, I saw the story of the Yellowstone cat earlier this week. Incredible Journey stuff for sure. Things like that are why I don't bring my cats on vacation; there are just too many chances of our being separated. (I don't think my cats want to leave me; but they do love exploring, and going just a little farther, and then a bit farther, and . . . What was that noise???!!! and a dash into the bush, and there you go.

17 Lily the redhead tricolor corgi (she'll be 5 in December) and I had a nice little walkabout on the woods trail we have here in the northern Adirondacks. It runs in a 3 mile loop through the five contiguous properties I and family have here. The hardwood forest parts were nice today, but the color change just ain't happening yet.

We did the section with two brook crossings. Lily loves the brooks. The woodlands we traverse were all open grazing and hay meadows a hundred years ago, and I am amazed at the size of the maple, ash, and white pine trees. Some of the pines look to be about 30 inches diameter at chest high, and run up 25 to 30 feet before there is a branch.

Lily either stays immediately behind me, like really close, or she gets out ahead just far enough to be clear of my hiking pole tips when I do the front reach.

The brook we crossed is called Styles brook, and when that Betsy hurricane occurred a month ago, the Styles flooded and wrecked two bridges downstream of here, which ruined the 4 mile bike loop I ride slowly with the dog chasing me.

18 The "cats in prison" story is clearly from the UK, Australia, or NZ. There's the narrator's accent, the use of "labouring" and "organised" in the captions, and the word "jumper," which Americans call a sweater. It's great to see . . . but somehow I doubt the same outcome would obtain in American prisons like Angola.

23 My cat Dexter used to climb trees and fences.
Now he's too darned old and well fed.
He just stares up at them with a wan look in his eyes.
BTW he loves to ride in a car. How did I find out? He jumped in an open window while the car was parked. Had a cat nap in the back seat.
Then I got in for an errand. After I got about a dozen miles away, I looked in the rear view mirror and there was his little cat head staring back at me... No panic at all.

I am aware of a prison here in CA in which some cats are nurtured, kind of informally, by inmates. The cats are part of a "colony", allowed on grounds to control rodents, but not part of a formal program.

Inmates are tough on anyone who abuses a cat. I think programs like the one above are considered from time to time.

28 Actually, the KY state pen, maximum security has a lot of cats around. The prisoners care for the cats and adopt them. The cats are not only well treated by the cons, messing with someone else's cat in an unkind manner is asking for at the very least a severe beating by the other inmates.
The place is called, The Castle on the Cumberland.
It has that look and is very tough. The cats keep those men much calmer.

30 I've seen dogs from a distance.

Never had one as a pet but I do know that they "feel."

There was some "study" that said pet ownership didn't make the owners any happier.

I'm calling BS on that.

Don't tell me dog owners would just as happy without their dogs.

And I have another visitor! This is a pale orange cat, I've been calling Creamsickle. Not sure if it's male or female. It likes to sleep on the camp chair I use out back. It's not as scared of me now, but wary of Jake. I will likely set up an outside bed for this one.

Stateless, I don't know if Hartz Mountain still makes a topical flea treatment. But the last time I used it, on Linda's rescue cat Angelique in '03, it gave the cat the shivers and she looked as if she were going into seizures. We rinsed her off right away and she was all right. But clearly it did not agree with her. There are other things like Revolution (which I think is Rx) and Frontline; they work fine.

Oh, little Dagny is well socialized. She likes petting and having her belly rubbed and even scratched. But she only rarely displays affection, at least to me. She sits next to Linda on the couch when I'm not there, I'm told. I have this notion that she doesn't really approve of me somehow -- that I'm not up to her standard of manservant or something.

In my experience, Siberians are odd.

60 That top pic is great. Our Daisy's snout doesn't allow for such smiles. But she shows happiness in yips and wiggles and chasing her tail. The pup on the ONT that "neutered" a child rapist sure had a big grin.

Daisy the frantic young Malinois just had her after-lunch (our lunch) ball-fetching session. She sure does like to run, and I mean, races like crazy. When she's ready to go, she does not like delays. When she finally brings the ball back but doesn't put it down, that means she's done, and glad to come inside, lie down, and pant for a while.

Glad to report that Daisy and Ony the old black cat seem to be getting along better every week. Haven't seen Ony hiss'n'spit at Daisy for a while now. Daisy doesn't get bug-eyed and turn away when their heads are near each other. They may never be snuggle-buddies, but I'm glad for increased mutual tolerance.

I have *got* to get some pictures off my phone and sent to the Pet Thread of our kids' dogs and cats.

68 Precious the bichon is 16 now and I swear she is rejuvenated since we adopted her over a year ago. (The medical attention she's had probably helped.) And she loves to go for her walks. As soon as she sees the leash come out her tail starts wagging furiously which, with her being so short, is a threat to my ankles. She rushes down the porch steps ready to do her business and see what adventures might unfold. UNLESS it's raining. She puts on the breaks as soon as she feels the first drop and looks back as if to accuse us of some horrible prank. As soon as she does what is needed she heads right back to the porch, shakes as much water on us as possible then stares at the door to come inside. She is not subtle about this. Once inside, she does a happy dance, checks out the food bowl then settles into the cuddler with a contented sigh.

Dumb animals my ass. She has us perfectly trained.

70 That's a topic: How do your cats or dogs react to the vacuum?

Arizona the big part-Coon tabby evacuated whatever room I was doing. Marie-Antoinette learned to sit atop the couch and watch; I think she realized I would never allow the Big Roaring Thing to harm her. Chekov fled ahead of the machine, hiding in spot A until I approached it, then fleeing to spot B. Wolf learned early to retreat to the bathroom, as I did that room last, and now Stirling does that, while Dagny just watches from a high perch.

76 I took Kaylee to the vet this past week to get some bloodwork done. She's lost a fair amount of weight over the past year and I was concerned it might be something serious. The bloodwork came back normal, though, so maybe she's just starting to show her age (she's 10). She's still about 9-10 pounds (down from a decidedly chubby 13), so I'm not too worried yet...

78 Thanks for the help everyone regarding the flea medication.

The dog is on 'Revolution' and the lady at the pet store recommended 'Advantage 2' for the kittens. So we should be good until the snow arrives.

Two cats visit, with our friend's blessing, and I just wanted the protection. It's getting colder and I'm fine with keeping Trumpy inside for awhile at night if he wants to stay.

My late aunt got a dog from someone. I forget the breed. It was about 40 pounds.

I don't know what snapped in that poor things' brain, but it was fascinated and driven insane by light reflections. Light reflecting from fridge doors, mirrored doors, anything would drive it insane. Crazy.

I use Seresto as it seems the best out there but beware of fakes.

Buy it at a pet store. Online is open to fraud.

83 This morning I gave her 1/2 tab. I will give her a whole one this evening.

The vet had doubled her to a full tab twice a day from a half tab twice a day. I think it's too much too fast. She had a follow up oct 7. I'm cutting her back to a half tab am and a full tab pm.

I hope she perks up. She's been eating more but drinking and peeing less. And she had pre existing kidney issues.

84 Need to get a baby cat for our cat. He can be a room away and if the door is open the slightest he will race out. I don't mind if he's out for a little while but sometimes he's gone till late and I don't want him attacked by coyotes or foxes which we have around here.

89 'bout time for me to take the kittens' current can of food out of the fridge, and to rinse out their bowls, in prep for dinner. They're used to breakfast at 4:30, except weekends when it's a touch later, and dinner at 5 or so, a little earlier on weekends.

94 Our weimaraner Lincoln is a year and a half and has been so quiet, no barking at strange noises or other creatures, until about a week ago. Someone tried to get into the rvand it really spooked him. It was just our neighbors son who had come to visit and was one site away. Now Lincoln has decided that he really has to protect us. He barks at everyone and everything. It's going to be interesting because we start traveling in 2 weeks and he'll be in lots of new places. I hope he calms down a little.

Thanks nurse.

They were just over for a nice visit. They will be fixing the remaining cats, getting rid of all the kittens and will be on a long vacation in the new year. So I already told them we'll take Trumpy. And Snowflake too depending on what happens.

I need to wrap my brain around this. We'll keep moving slowly and let the cats transition here. Our dog is fine with them. I spilled cat food the other night and the dog and cat teamed up to clean the floor. No barking, hissing, growling...nothing.

100 I remember I put a flea collar on Arizona once, when he was about a year old (1984). He was okay with wearing it, though since he was longhaired it made the fur around his neck look weird. When it was time to get it off, there was no way to unbuckle it, so I had to cut it off.

106 Boy did I luck out with Lily. She was a tiny shivering ball of fluff in the cage at PetSmart, and she cowered inside her litter box for two days when I brought her home. But now she strolls around like lady of the manor and is intensely interested in what her human staff is up to. I can't read or use the computer without her interposing herself. I've found that a few minutes of intense attention and rubz satisfy her demand for worship.

Now, Mister Beautiful, the cat I tried to adopt a while back, I never saw except as a ghost lurking at night. His former owners took him back and he was happy as a hairy clam to be back with them.

Family member saw "Wiener Dog" on a streaming service and decided to watch it.

Do not watch "Wiener Dog". It's a black comedy film, the dog is mostly just a prop for an anthology of 4 different stories, and it's bleak, even at the end. Especially the end.
