Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Who ya gonna trust? Dec. 31, 2022Perhaps the biggest underreported story of the 2020s is the widespread collapse of institutional trust and the loss of confidence in the inevitability of progress, even among the Western elite. Like frightened children in the dark, we find that we can't trust the science and can't trust each other. When a society finds it can't control the future, what does it do?The frightened child this piece starts out with is Greta Thunberg. A terrible "if" lurking in the heart of the future has replaced the old confident belief in progress. "Modern hope in the future and faith in progress come from nineteenth-century political theories that largely remain with us today. In particular, a school of political thought called progressivism (which gave rise to our modern sense of the term) influenced American educational institutions. Progressivism is steeped in the philosophies of Georg Hegel and Karl Marx, who theorized that history unfolds in certain (progressive) directions and a robust faith in science and technology will aid in that progress." Now we fear the opening of a door and breathe out in relief when the monster is not behind it. No longer are we so certain that the Arc of History goes to a good place. Today, experts at the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford and the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge believe that the greatest threat to human existence is scientific man himself . . .Children who frighten some of us contribute to the chaos as we progress through the piece. Like SBF: These negative developments have precipitated a crisis of belief in the new Western elite religion, effective altruism, which is the process of putting the best and brightest in charge of the money because they are wise. It explains that "our intuitions about doing good don't usually take into account the scale of the outcomes... But, when trying to do as much good as possible, we aim to give everyone's interests equal weight, no matter where or when they live." Instead of being biased by emotional impulses like faith, hope, and charity like stupid people, these fitful urges were far better superseded by smart people using rational criteria like diversity, inclusion, and equity. But unfortunately, as Dylan Matthews writes in Vox, prominent advocates of effective altruism like Sam Bankman-Fried have ruined the image of enlightened elite leadership. . .It's more complicated than that, too. Back to the drawing board, or what? Got a plan? An idea? From Dr_No: Erasing borders means erasing citizenship, which means dissolving the last vestigial bonds of duty and responsibility the political elite might feel toward their nominal constituents. We'll all be "citizens of the world," which means we don't get to vote on anything important. The migrants will suffer a great deal too, but nobody in the Open Borders Caucus gives a damn about them. Predatory gangs, human rights abuses, drug smuggling... all part of the price migrants will pay, and nobody will dare say a word about the humanitarian calamity.Read the whole thread. A related end-of-the-year rant from alexthechick ends like this: When you treat people with contempt, then have the gall to ask them to spend their time and treasure on working to elect those who will turn around and show more contempt, you will be met, as you should be, with jog on. Welcome to the end of the polite requests. May God help us.
Twitter is noticeably absent from the entities listed on the organization's "How to follow Davos 2023" social media pamphlet, and that appears to be no accident. To stay up to speed with all that is happening within the invite-only doors of the ruling class confab, the WEF recommends following along through a handful of social media sites. They include the U.S.-based narrative-compliant Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube, along with the Chinese social media apps TikTok WeChat, and Weibo. Twitter, which has freed itself from the grasp of the WEF-endorsed censorship-compliant social apps, is no longer included. Sen. The poem Ring Out, Wild Bells by Alfred, Lord Tennyson forms part of the elegy In Memoriam, A.H.H, published in 1850. Tennyson wrote the elegy as a tribute to his close friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, who was also his sister's fiance and who had died suddenly at the age of 22.Ring Out, Wild Bells, The holidays are a good time to get people you care about talking or writing about their lives in a way that can be passed on. Think about it. I have been thinking a lot about this lately. Specifically with regards to things we all talk/write about online. On blogs, websites, etc. I think of how over the past 15 years or so of saving bookmarks to websites and specific articles/essays, I sometimes will come across an old bookmark and decide to click on it to read it again and... the site is no longer active. I think of all the thoughts and essays and knowledge, etc that has been put online over the past 20-30 years after the invention of the internet and the various blogging and personal website sites, and how so much of it is just now gone, if people can't keep their site active. Much different than if written in a journal or a diary or published in a book. If one day someone decides to just 'turn off' the internet, how much information would be lost forever, never to be seen by future generations looking back on this time, as we look back on past generations through written word in books and art and all the different ancient markings on stone, etc.Clyde Shelton There are other remarks concerning the diary entries of Muldoon's father. The comment regarding written journals reminded me also about all of our digital pictures. We know a wealth of knowledge of our past through the physical Kodak pics of times of yore. However, if the big electromagnetic wave hits and wipes out ALL that’s digital, will anyone know anything even existed for the past 20-25 years? I mean, when was the last time any of you actually printed out an honest to goodness Kodak paper picture? The age of the digital camera / smartphone has been a boon to photographers, and allows us to take unlimited pictures, but once the technology is gone, so are our records!

-- Yes, quite. But the reverse is also true, to wit - some personal memories and writings should never see the light of day again. If you can store an image, then data bits could be made into an image, and stored, too. Here is a suggestion: Step one. Invent flexible glass that cannot be easily shattered, even in very thin sheets. Step two. Invent durable, heat-resistant pigments for laser printers. Step three. Use laser printer to print color image on sheet of the flexi-glass. Step four. Laminate (by fusing) another layer of clear flexi-glass on top of the image to seal the pigments away from air and scuffing. The same process could be used top make optically-readable digital media.
Posted by: Joe S at December 31, 2022 11:30 AM My cousin's wife was big into taking all the pictures she took of her kids and at parties and family get-togethers and making online scrapbooks. But she also was big into taking special pictures and making physical scrapbooks, as many of us did before digital times. I didn't understand why she did that at the time, seemed redundant. But looking back, it was/is a fantastic habit to preserve those memories, in the worst case that the electronic files were ever lost. NTSB preliminary report on the CAF mid-air lays out the facts it was the Air Boss changing the show literally in mid-flight and there were no briefings on altitude deconfliction. So the P-63F as it going into trail formation behind two P-51s and was changing to the 500ft line so did not see the B-17G.
The only known drone in the area was over a quarter mile away and at 5,000ft. The mid-air occurred at roughly 500ft. Posted by: Anna Puma at December 31, 2022 12:47 PM (K0SUX) 245

Lighter than air craft are a very good idea on paper. I really don't know what hinders their production. The easy money break-even point is very heavy though. We're talking massive behemoths carrying loads you'd associate with train lines or cargo ships. The math behind aircraft design with respect to strength, weight, and materials will allow this for lighter-than-air where it certainly does not for heavier than air craft. Lockheed also has worked extensively on this. But I think the problem is reaching the very high, large-volume ships where the math is a slam dunk. Lots of investment in something that's never been done.

Posted by: banana Dream at December 31, 2022 12:50 PM (0fVbu) I think the real problem with dirigibles and blimps is that they are slow, cannot fly very high, and are therefore at the mercy of the weather. If one gets caught in a severe storm, wind shear could rip it apart. I think that is what became of the Brit airship R101. Anna probably knows. With the advent of weather satellites, and better forecasting, airships have a better chance of avoiding severe weather, but the risk will never be zero. Dear Greta: I grew up midway between New York City and Washington, DC. The Philadelphia Ship Yard was a little more than ten minutes west of my house. Chances were that the USSR would take out both cities and at least a shot at the shipyard. The US government assured me I would be safe if I stood in the hallway of my school, packed in with all the other kids in my school and wrapped my arms around my neck.
These days, I live in Offutt AFB's backyard (StratCom) and a few miles south of the Avril Harriman Center, from which the Union Pacific rail road assigns all its power(engines). A godawful number of communications companies have major operations in my area because it is so centrally located. I'm not going to worry about something that just might happen a hundred years from now. I've been living with the immediate threat of annihilation just about my whole life. Well blimps or zeppelins if one prefers the sexy name for cargo may become a thing in the future if the railroads and/or government don't find a way to stop the cargo looting and general lawlessness. Probably easier to control a limited area around the launch and landing sites and then have them high enough to be safe from attack than to guard the rail routes when the gub'mint won't allow use of lethal force to guard the trains.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 31, 2022 12:54 PM (tkR6S) Most all of those problems really don't affect the large lifting bodies that have been envisioned. No known gust intensity, duration, energy, could affect them much. I run gust simulations all the time. Forces on an aircraft due to a particular gust or atmospheric energy are a large function of the aircraft's lift to weight ratio. The higher lift to weight the higher the response. It would be almost nothing for a huge airship. Also, these airships are not a single hulled structure. They are a complex arrangement of many gas-filled bladders supported by an aerospace internal skeleton within a high tensile shell that spans dozens of football fields in length. They are also pretty impervious to being shot or most surface-to-air missiles. You'd have to nuke one to take it out. And they would have a top speed of about 150 knots maybe a little more. Slower than most all air transport. But better than sea and most all rail. Posted by: banana Dream at December 31, 2022 01:08 PM (0fVbu) 296
The problem with airships is as they become large enough to be a practical passenger or transport vehicle, they become unsafe in any kind of bad weather with wind shear, as is born out by how many crashes occurred.

A little update from Jane D'oh:
No news on her husband - he is still sedated and will be for probably a few days. She was going to go to the hospital today for a bit to sit with him and tell him she loves him in case he can hear her (I told her I was sure he could!). And then her son texted to say he was sick and had a fever. They have been together every day since this happened. Shortly after he texted to say he had Covid, which all three of them have already had. So of course now Jane is worried about her husband with regard to that. She feels fine but was going to call the ICU nurse and I suspect the nurse will tell her to stay home. I suggested she stay home and make a big pot of chicken soup, just in case. >>I know numerous people, including myself, that have turned their allegiance away from that of the US to an allegiance toward Oklahoma.
Rhode Island, or Rogue Island as it was derisively nicknamed, was the last colony to sign the Constitution. Most did not want to trade rule by the King for rule by a federal government and a large number feared the loss of religious liberty which was kind of RI's thing. Held out for a year and only relented when the other colonies announced a trade embargo against RI. We're small but feisty. Posted by: JackStraw at December 31, 2022 01:31 PM (ZLI7S) 329

Speaking of going back to old saved links, I had this 2016 linked saved in my Global Warming/Climate Change folder exposing all the false "predictions". I did not even notice until today when I went back to it that this was written by David French in National Review.
This goes back to the "loss of trust" topic. That is something I have learned over the past 6+ years since Donald Trump arrived in politics. I have learned to not trust anyone on the right anymore, as Trump exposed so many former "conservatives" as frauds and grifters. https://bit.ly/3ik2jQb Al Gore's Doomsday Clock Expires & Climate Change Fanatics are Wrong Again - David French I thought of this story as I watched Rush Limbaugh's Al Gore "armageddon" clock expire. In January, 2006 - when promoting his Oscar-winning (yes, Oscar-winning) documentary, An Inconvenient Truth - Gore declared that unless we took "drastic measures" to reduce greenhouse gasses, the world would reach a "point of no return" in a mere ten years. He called it a "true planetary emergency." Well, the ten years passed today, we're still here, and the climate activists have postponed the apocalypse. Again. The Armor guys would call us Infantry guys "Crunchies" because that's the noise we made when they ran us over. And we'd call them DAT's (back in the M60 days) because they were dumb-ass tankers. Actually it was for states rights, until the civil war the attitude was that the various states were independent states in a union, not a single state ruled from DC
Everyone throws up their hands and says "DC won" but we see how it has turned out. Posted by: Kindltot at December 31, 2022 12:27 PM (xhaym) ____________ Before the Civil War, I think the states viewed themselves pretty much the way countries in the EU view themselves now: independent entities in a voluntary federation. I don't understand the deep passion to preserve the Union amongst the presidents. The people of all the states were OK with it under Jackson and he was as passionate or more so than Lincoln about keeping the Union. And under Lincoln it was only political/corporate interests.
