Look around - - It's Christmas Eve

Can we avoid thinking too much about these folks on Christmas Eve?

We are led by such preposterous figures, like no one you ever see at home, in life. They insist on inflicting on us such bloated theater & they seem not to know how false it all appears. They bluster & strut among the marble columns, waving, saluting. Honoring the lie.

For contrast, a story about real people

I wanted to highlight a great piece from J.J. Sefton's Morning Report yesterday, A Christmas I'll Never Forget, which is primarily about the relationship of two sisters as one of them neared death.

Anyone who is honest and has a heart knows that families cause pain, and that some families cause more pain than others.

It is a story full of conflicting feelings and remembrances that lead to the intense experiences of two sisters together after a long separation, under trying circumstances. It's not a story about social media influencers or politicians. It's real. Love survives the pain.

It includes this perceptive passage, too, starting with a remembrance of a Christmas Eve service:

Shoulders, elbows, hips collided, and everyone just put up with the jostling. The church was so full some couldn't get beyond the vestibule. There were muffled coughs and vague scents of moist wool, moth balls, and cedar blocks. Old Italian ladies who spoke no English prayed their own prayers under black lace mantillas.

One of our regular church ladies walked up the aisle to receive communion. Her head was always tilted. An injury? A birth defect? I always wondered and I never knew. I found out years later that Mrs. Gilpatrick was a PhD and a published and praised novelist, and yet she gave her life to our blue-collar parish. I found out years later that our high school janitor, Mr. Van Wilpe, who was just about invisible to me, at risk to himself, helped rescue shark-menaced sailors from the sunken USS Indianapolis during World War II. We were surrounded by strong, wounded people who carried their wounds with fortitude and dignity. We took their solidity for granted and only recognized it years later when we inhabited worlds where they were merely a memory.

I missed those old church people so very badly as I traveled the world. When, four continents later, I returned and they hugged me at my mother's funeral, I wanted to grab them and never let them go, to hold them back from the rush of time that was taking them from me, both their aging physical bodies, and their culture, one being rendered superfluous by new attitudes.

One thing that this piece brings into focus for me is that remembrances -- written histories, audible recordings, photos (not just on a phone) etc. -- may mean more in future years than they will mean even in the near future. The holidays are a good time to get people you care about talking or writing about their lives in a way that can be passed on. Think about it.

Home, Hearth and Neighborhood

This particular Christmas Eve, there are some extra reasons to pay attention to home, family, neighborhood and community as well. Including the weather in much of the country.

It's a good idea to check on your family and your neighbors, and to reach out if you need help.

Are there other preparations you have taken which you might like to share in the comments?

Are you prepared to feed neighbors if a weather emergency takes out utilities?

Do you think you might have someone like this show up needing some help?

Computer Tips for Christmas Superpowers?

Can anybody vouch for the websites in this thread? Some of them sound pretty useful:

There are over a billion websites on the internet, yet most people never use more than a dozen.

Here are 10 little-known websites that give you superpowers.

Stuck in one of this weekend's storms? I tried website No. 2 from the link above. Seems okay. Might want to input food items that could go bad quickly if your electricity goes out. They have a checklist.

2. http://Myfridgefood.com

Make the best possible meal with whatever you have.

If you can't decide what to eat, just let MyFridgeFood know what's in your fridge and it will tell you what meals you can make and how you can make them. A great way to discover new recipes.

I didn't apply any filters. My first recipe results were two kinds of baked French toast (no maple syrup mentioned) and holiday pinwheel cookies.

Pinwheel Cookies? Best possible meal from what I have!

Then came empanada dough and pizza loaves. They think I want to bake food items absolutely full of carbs! Bottom of first page: Yorkshire pudding and apple rings. Butterbeer Latte is an "unapproved recipe". Don't know if it is an official Harry Potter recipe or not.

Happy Hanukkah to the Jewish members of The Horde, including co-bloggers, commenters, lurkers and friends! Hanukkah ends Monday night, which means there are still a few opportunities this year to find new ways to prepare Latkes and other fried foods.

From what I have gathered, there are two primary kinds of potato latkes: fluffy and crispy. Do you have a favorite? Here are simple directions with a video and music, plus history. There are also other recipes at the link. Going low carb? Try zucchini.

Oven or stove top? directions for both.

Better Homes and Gardens has tips for crispy (not fluffy) latkes. Plus other Hanukkah recipes. So, no reason to stop having those holiday meals! You might even find Cajun Latkes!

4 We had something of a thread yesterday evening, about the family conflict and strain that can cause some to have a different type of Christmas experience.

Sometimes it's better to be away from family.

I'm celebrating new beginnings, and will be alone all day tomorrow. Today I'm driving down to see my brother, so it's time to close up this shop and get to that.

Happy Christmas to all who are able, and peace to those who are not.

27 It's a good idea to check on your family and your neighbors, and to reach out if you need help.

Are you prepared to feed neighbors if a weather emergency takes out utilities?

Hear! Hear! Yes, we are - also, are neighbors are prepared. It's much of the reason we selected this community to live out our years.

Most everyone has staples put up in case of supply disruptions. Fuel for heat is very close and free - (just have to be mindful of the game wardens). Clean water is available if you are willing to carry it up the ravine.

Defense from outside threats is comparatively easy - One way in and out and reasonably secure due to land features surrounding the neighborhood. I don't know of one neighbor that isn't armed to the teeth.

The biggest plus - tough, but loving, down to earth folks.

34 One early gift we got this year was making the final payment on our house. We are already looking into a bug-out place out of state. My wife knows a guy whose family owns a lot of land and they also buy land with homes on them, and subdivide a parcel around the home area, an acre or two, and keep the rest as farm/grazing land. They do that in Colorado too, but here it's so they can turn the rest of the parcel into a subdivision.

To say the least, we are very interested.

41 I mentioned that seasonal ice rink in back of the Del in last week's thread. Nice photo of it.

If you take a walk on the beach just to the right of the picture, heading that same direction (south), not far past where the Del's property ends, and just past the condo towers you can barely see in the background, you'll want to stop right there. Beyond that is the base that is home of the SEALs.

If you're lucky in the timing of your visit, you can see the boys during hell week, carrying telephone poles or running in/out of the surf in their fatigues and boots.

Our little modular is on 5 acres that was part of a larger farm back in 60's. At some point a barn went up nearby, then a brick house and that was more or less sectioned off into someone's property... you can see the fencing on old aerial photos (before Google Earth.) Our tract is a "flag lot." There's a narrow right of way to the road, about a quarter mile away that joins our acreage set behind this other property. The barn is just on the other side of a field fence in what passes for our front yard... 100yds or so away. Everything around is is either cropland or pasture save for this property and one other.

I refuse to believe things that are preposterous. There is no way that Pelosi or Mitch etc etc are legitimate representatives of their districts or States. I refuse to participate in the preposterous sham. They will do what they do but I won't try and create some Rube Goldberg logic chain as to how democtratic politics produced them or their actions. I am interested solely in how to transfer political legitimacy back to the populace from wherever it allegedly now resides. And I accept that I can't know wtf is going on wrt who gets installed and why. That information is occulted and innaccesible.

Don't waste effort. The reasons for why bad things are happening are not accessible right now. Work toward and think about how to make them accesible. Lamentation is fine. But not productive. Using logic to justify how things got to this point on the basis that the world works how we were taught is counter-productive.

A great movie would be something where they follow the Hallmark script, but it's a slasher horror movie and the main female is oblivious to it all, not noticing all the people dying around her. Have the Tucker & Dale people direct it. It would be fun and hilarious. Hallmark would never allow it.

83 Cocoa - there is dutch process and ordinary cocoa. Both different, some prefer one or the other for hot cocoa. A blend of both is nice too. Cane sugar. Don't forget a healthy pinch of salt, and use whole milk or half and half.

I bought a five pound bag of dutch process Ghidarli or whatever. Cost a fortune relatively. For the price I really wanted to like it better than ordinary cocoa. Maybe for baking it is suoerior, for hot chocolate it wasn't all that and a bag of chips.

Yes. Right. Augustine noted the same things occurring in his time. We have been here before. We will win again. Wickedness in High Places etc etc.

The Bible does not appear to have a description of the mechanical process currently generating bad outcomes. It's that we can't know right now. And what we have to accept. We have to work towards getting access to occulted information and stop seeking to justify preposterous things on the basis of the incomplete data at our disposal.

I think I have simply given up. These people make a lot of sound and fury, meaning nothing. There are a few genuine fighters in Congress, but the rest are nothing more than squishes, members in good standing in the Uniparty. Every time I hope there might be some meaningful pushback from the GOPe, they cave like sand castles on a beach in the face of the oncoming tide. Elon Musk has provided so much evidence of governmental wrong doing, and they don't even pretend to ignore it; it simply doesn't exist for them. They don't deny it; they simply don't see or hear anything that doesn't match the current narrative. And their districts keep voting them back in.

135 The holidays are a good time to get people you care about talking or writing about their lives in a way that can be passed on. Think about it.

I have been thinking a lot about this lately. Specifically with regards to things we all talk/write about online. On blogs, websites, etc. I think of how over the past 15 years or so of saving bookmarks to websites and specific articles/essays, I sometimes will come across an old bookmark and decide to click on it to read it again and... the site is no longer active.

I think of all the thoughts and essays and knowledge, etc that has been put online over the past 20-30 years after the invention of the internet and the various blogging and personal website sites, and how so much of it is just now gone, if people can't keep their site active. Much different than if written in a journal or a diary or published in a book. If one day someone decides to just 'turn off' the internet, how much information would be lost forever, never to be seen by future generations looking back on this time, as we look back on past generations through written word in books and art and all the different ancient markings on stone, etc.

This is a Law Enforcement issue. These are criminal natures. They want to commit crimes. It is what they like doing. It's always been a Law Enforcement issue. Not a constitutional one.

It means she is joshing on the plot of most of the Hallmark Christmas Movies.

I used to hate Christmas season because a) I worked in the Post Office as a seasonal causual, b) It was a huge disruption in my life as I had set it up to avoid everyone, and c) it was never as happy making as I had hyped myself how it would be if it were perfect

Ms Mask on the airplane is cruising to a miserable yuletide that will never be as wonderful as it would be if she just decided to enjoy it without being the best and most life changing evar.

157 Saw the ahole calling for 'regime change' in Russia. Just how well has that worked out elsewhere?

Posted by: BignJames at December 24, 2022 11:39 AM

So why was regime change in Iraq bad, but regime change in Russia is good? I could see logical rationale made in support of both, but the people who were dead set against regime change in Iraq are now gung-ho for regime change in Russia. Would be nice if someone called them on out their hypocrisy.

But, yeah, I will not be holding my breath on that. No one called out the Democrats on their hypocrisy of being anti-Saddam and anti-Iraq during the Clinton Administration and then doing a complete 180 and being against any action in Iraq during the Bush Administration.

Nor has the Left explained how they were anti-war from 2002 through 2016, and then pro-war from Jan 2017 to now. No one praised President Trump for his policies to keep USA out of foreign wars and no one rips Biden for the Deep State's proxy war in Ukraine.

235 Georgia under electrical critical load condition

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - As temperatures have dropped all over Georgia, the increase in electrical usage has put the entire state under a Critical Load Condition.

If loads continue to climb or if the city loses a section of the transmission line anywhere in Georgia, we will begin experiencing rolling blackouts.

This is not just impacting Albany Utilities. The extreme weather conditions are putting a strain on the entire electric grid. To prevent potential electrical issues, we are asking our customers to minimize all nonessential electrical usage.

The Neapolitans were royally pissed that the Germans were arresting their men to deport to forced labor camps, so they started picking off German soldiers, as they knew their daily routine. (they had guns from the soldiers of the Italian army who had melted back into the community after Italy surrendered to the Allies)

So the Head Nazi in Charge did their typical thing, posted a curfew with the additional warning of "For each German killed, ten Neapolitans will pay with their lives", And the people said, yeah no, take your reprisall ratio and ba fongool with it.

“I always look forward to sharing my lists of favorite books, movies, and music with all of you,” Obama tweeted. “First up, here are some of the books I read and enjoyed this year. Let me know which books I should check out in 2023.”

Among his favorite written works, Obama listed “The School for Good Mothers” by Jessamine Chan and “The Light We Carry” by former first lady Michelle Obama, noting, “I’m a bit biased on this one.”

On his list of favorite movies, the former president included “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Descendant,” which he also noted he was “biased” about since the Netflix documentary was produced by the Obama-founded company Higher Ground Productions.

My Election Case provided the world with evidence that proves our elections are run outside of the law. This Judge did not rule in our favor.

However, for the sake of restoring faith and honesty in our elections, I will appeal his ruling.

312 If they can stick a thumb drive and buy an election we can stick a thumb drive and nullify it. It takes one person.

DON'T CHEAT, NULLIFY

313 This Judge did not rule in our favor.

Either way he rules, it continues to the Supreme Court. He saved his family today and he did us a big favor by admitting evidence into the record.

316 And of course, because no absolute smoking gun... Kari Lake's lawsuit was just tossed by a Judge.

Interesting that they will overturn voting laws with NO evidence that voter ID impacts Blacks more than other voters, yet even with a totally chaotic election, run by someone IN said election... when all the chaos helped THAT person.... sorry... not enough proof.

Fix was in folks.
