Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | When paradise isn't paradise anymoreI fell in love with the place my first week there. I was a Visiting Professor at the University of San Diego School of Law, taking a sabbatical from my home institution, the University of Queensland in Australia. That was back in January of 2013. My wife and I were to spend the first half of that year in San Diego and then, as we are both native-born Canadians, I had a second sabbatical post lined up at a university in Toronto. Of course, I knew back then that USD had some of America's best-known scholars of the theory of constitutional interpretation known as "originalism." I'd been invited to a few of their conferences already, and I had met Professors Larry Alexander, Maimon Schwarzschild, and Steven Smith at symposia and conferences in Australia. It wasn't just the fact we walked out our door and ten seconds later were walking or jogging on one of the best beaches in America. Nor was it that an old-fashioned, single-speed granny bike, basket and all, could get you anywhere you wanted on Coronado. . . All those factors were just icing on the cake, however. What really made my sabbatical visit were the academics at the USD law school. They were smart and nice, and very hospitable. Perhaps that is not all that unusual at any law school, but what I had not really expected was the wide range of views I found across the faculty. Say this sotto voce, and outside the earshot of any present-day university administrator, but the USD law school even had a critical mass of what you might classify as "conservative legal thinkers." As someone who had done his law degree in Canada, a Masters at the LSE in London, has taught around the anglosphere, and has seen first-hand the collapse of viewpoint diversity on campuses around the anglosphere, this was wholly unforeseen. In fact, with about a quarter of the then USD law faculty being right-of-centre types in all their various manifestations, I soon learned that the 2013 USD was probably the most conservative law school in the US (with the possible exception of George Mason, though there the iconoclasts are mostly libertarians). But everyone seemed to get along. Each Friday there was a staff seminar, and these crossed the gamut of topics and viewpoints and were excellent.A quarter of the faculty were right-of-center??? Unheard of! Things were changing by his second sabbatical in 2019. When I got there, I learned that what you might describe as the conservative wing of the law school was now largely being kept off key law school committees, most importantly the hiring committee. For me, the 2019 sabbatical was as excellent as the one six years before. But I sensed this island of comparative tolerance for iconoclastic, nonconformist, dissident--save time and call it "conservative"--viewpoints had noticeably shrunk. And if future hires were to be judged through the prism of "diversity and inclusion" and not on straight-up merit, well, you could guess how many conservatives would be hired. The USD law school would slowly become like all the other 200-odd accredited US law schools where Democrat-donating and voting law profs outnumber Republicans by double figures to one. This little sanctuary of open-mindedness would wither and die.2022: A few weeks ago, I learned that some of the stalwarts of the USD law school, well-known and long-standing professors of law who certainly could not be described as "progressives," had all put in their notice to take up the three-year retirement option. USD was losing Larry Alexander. Losing Steve Smith. Losing former dean Kevin Cole. Losing Gail Heriot. All of them had endured enough. Yes, there are some nonconformists still there who haven't announced their take-up of the retirement pathway, and will battle on. But we can't kid ourselves. As that unexpected sanctuary for dissident conservative outlooks, USD was in its death throes. Hiring was now to be done explicitly with an eye to "diversity" (though of course, not the sort that has anything to do with outlook). In the not-too-distant future, this small private law school will be much of a muchness with other like law schools. . . . The capture of law schools by one dominant outlook rolls on to the peripheral outliers, to that wonderful USD law school that gave me two magnificent sabbaticals. And I cannot tell readers how sad this all makes me. I thought of Shakespeare and Much Ado About Nothing. As our own J.J. Sefton reminded us yesterday in detail, many of our political problems stem from our educational system. The psychologists are burning another witch. A mob of professors, graduate students, and miscellaneous luftmenschen denounced Klaus Fiedler, the editor of Perspectives on Psychological Science, for "racism, general editorial incompetence, and abuse of power." The Board of Directors of the Association for Psychological Science (APS), craven accomplices to the mob, swiftly told Fiedler to resign or be fired. Fiedler resigned. The occasion? In 2020, one Steven Roberts of Stanford University published the usual farrago of identity-politics activism that passes for professional research among the woke, copy-pasted to apply to psychology. Fiedler, naif, arranged to publish a professional discussion of his article--which, naturally, thoroughly but politely dismantled his argument. Roberts' solicited response included the slanderous accusation that respondent Lee Jussim's citation of a line from Fiddler on the Roof ("Of course, there was the time when he sold him a horse, but delivered a mule.") somehow invoked a long-forgotten derogatory comparison of blacks to mules. (Gentle reader, is there one living American in a thousand who knows that this comparison ever existed?) Fiedler, solicitous of Roberts' professional reputation, asked him to withdraw that particular ad hominem. Roberts responded by withdrawing his article and publishing it as an open-access pre-print, publicly denouncing Fiedler and all his critics as proof that "systemic racism exists in science," and sparking the social-media frenzy that led to Fiedler's forced resignation. And that was not the only demand of the woke mob. Read the whole piece. Lee Jussim, distinguished professor of psychology at Rutgers University, has provided an extensive account of Roberts' writings and of this witch-hunt. More broadly, he has described the general behavior of the identity-politics mobs who seek to destroy psychology. These mobs seek (in my language, not his) to destroy all the academic disciplines by staffing them with commissars and by forcing them to pursue such euphemistically defined goals as "social justice," "diversity, equity, and inclusion," and so-called "anti-racism." In other words, they seek to impose a radical-left-wing political agenda on every aspect of the university, and to suppress all professional and private expression to oppose, or even question, that agenda. Jussim and his likeminded peers say, despairingly, that the woke subordination of psychology (and the other disciplines) will encourage all free and intelligent minds to exit the discipline--and will also encourage attempts by Americans outside the academy to defund psychology as politicized nonsense. The statements above should encourage action. Still, the following is pretty strong. Good. American policymakers are fully justified in using the powers of the states and the federal government to restore the academy, and in defunding those sections of the academy that have succumbed completely to the woke. Gangrene requires surgery. I do not wish to enter into the details of how psychology should conduct itself professionally, although I note that John Staddon has published a trenchant critique of psychology in the National Association of Scholars's (NAS) journal Academic Questions, which challenges psychological practice more fundamentally than does Roberts. Are The Woke ready to have psychology defunded? Jussim and Maranto on the same topic at Real Clear Education. How Woke Critical Theory is Destroying Science In the days that followed, we--the journalist Matt Taibbi; investigative reporters connected to The Free Press, including Abigail Shrier, Michael Shellenberger and Leighton Woodhouse; plus Free Press reporters Suzy Weiss, Peter Savodnik, Olivia Reingold, and Isaac Grafstein--camped out in a windowless, fluorescent-lit room at Twitter headquarters and began looking through the company's vast archive of internal communications. "What's the worst thing the activists ever did to you?" The question I've been asked most often is also the one I never answer. Because isn't it obvious? It's the times they managed to reach my children. Musk is a strange man. A consummate jokester and an undeniable genius. He bought a company for which, by his own estimation, he paid three times what it was worth. "At least," he said, when I and Michael Shellenberger and Bari Weiss asked him about this. "I thought this was important to the future of civilization," he said. "I told investors that too.... And I thought this was important to the future of civilization to have a digital Town Square that people thought was fair and a level playing field and that, I don't know, pro civilization essentially." He told us he bought Twitter to protect the "expansion of consciousness." Do you have a favorite carol for caroling? With due precautions if you live in the South? Paradise isn't paradise because politicians on both sides are whores. They are whores who can get away with it. And by politician, I'll include the federal bureaucracy, none of whom are hired for their talent and devotion to country.
I will include Governor BookDeal in this category until he explains exactly what the Foxxies are getting for their money, and don't insult my intelligence by saying "a good book", because political book deals are money laundering these days. Shockingly, the otherwise-fine essay on the Hotel Del Coronado omits one of the more fun and interesting tidbits about the hotel, and its famous beach.
For the past fifty-plus years, the rock jetty that fronts the hotel and protects its beach, has been used for training by BUD/S, the SEAL training school, just one mile down the Strand. BUD/S trainees learn how to land rubber boats on those rocks, day and night, in all weather, during the training. And the timed runs that are a big part of training pass by those rocks and the hotel, every week. It's a source of local pride that the Hotel Del plays such a big part of the SEAL tradition. A firm I know hired a law "prefesser" who also happened to be a militant lesbean and a man hater. She always got glowing reviews when she worked at her leftist law seminary and was considered the tops in her field which escapes my mind at the moment. As soon as the firm hired her, the problems began. She was lazy, entitled and wanted others to do all the leg work and actual work on any project. She mainly posted her lesbean adventures with her "wife" on fakebook during working hours.
Finally, after a few years of her nonsense, the firm moved her to a sinecure spot doing their "conferences". All her fellow lawyers avoided her like the plague less a hostile work environment case suddenly pop up with their dealings with her. She never made the firm one single dime in profits but she did let them check the militant lesbean box. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at December 17, 2022 11:48 AM (R/m4+) 35

Colder and wetter than any other spot in the area (and its beaches face southwest more than others, the surf there is rougher and always seems colder). Mostly retired Navy brass living there. Many of the homes were seasonal, vacation rentals (no insulation, light construction). As recently as the 80s, young first-time home-buyers bought there for the low prices.
Well. Last time I saw the numbers (could be a decade) Coronado had a higher average home price than Rancho Santa Fe, one of the top income zip codes in the US. And it is beautiful. The simpler houses are mostly now replaced by modern villas, the older classic ones fixed up. There are historical plaques on many homes denoting where notable naval aviators lived. Great place to bike or walk. The SEALs no longer (since 9/11) do their July 4th spectacular on Glorietta Bay near their base, but Coronado has a 4th of July parade out of the 1950s, it's terrific. Not that I dwell on these kinds of things but one of the biggest mistakes of my life was not moving to SD when I had the chance in 1985. My best friend moved there and I visited all the time.
A place where I instantly felt and home. People walking around smiling all the time. No screens on the windows, people in the area I was in left there windows open all the time. All kinds of cool things to do. I ended up in Cocoa Beach. But San Diego would have been much better. A lot more places to work as an engineer. Damn! Notwithstanding all the well-known idiocies inflicted on themselves by the populace here, there are still more great things to do than I have time or energy for.
Weather's the same (ridiculously perfect). Mexico (northern Baja, border area) isn't the wonderful uncrowded friendly casual place it was, of course. Mountains and deserts are basically the same. Crowding, prices, and artificially inflated energy costs are actually the worst things affecting normal daily life. Some of that is a direct result of idiotic politics, but not all. The area was in many ways probably close to paradise in the golden era (50s-70s). If you grew up here then and were the sort that loved all it had to offer, it's hard to imagine living anywhere else, even with the negative changes. Pretty much depends on your interests and activities. Posted by: rhomboid at December 17, 2022 12:10 PM (OTzUX) 97

The top item compels me to point out that I stuff Gail Heriot into the same sort of box as Victor Davis Hanson; their messages come a generation or two too late to be effective. They see the causes but still don't grok the magnitude of the problems, and shy away from the sorts of solutions required. Pre-1968 America isn't coming back, and it shouldn't because the seeds of today were planted long prior to that.

Once upon a time..."celebrating" Christmas was severely frowned upon, and part of that was the time-honored practice of the underprivileged literally barging into the homes of the wealthier and making off with silver, candlesticks and the like. The original "War on Christmas," documented in the words of the song "The World Turn'd Upisde Down," stemmed from attempts in the 18th century to end the custom. Something tells me he meant "dismiss" which we should do judiciously, but "defund" is what is ultimately needed across the entire Academy. Defunding the Marxist Madrasas is necessary to pull up from this nose-dive. I worked at the University of San Diego (not the School of Law) for the last two decades of my working career, and got to see some of the forums and presentations that the School of Law put on.
It really is a small small private Catholic university. And a beautiful campus (in a beautiful city). But the takeover by wokeness is part of a larger slide to mediocrity; as part of the web team, I had the privilege of listening in on their slogan design, where they made fun of other small private Catholic universities such as Azusa Pacifics, which has (and had) God right on the web page. APs God line was also a simple line, and I suggested we attempt to come up with a simple, short line that would describe USD. The result was a long, meandering, and meaningless bit of bureaucratese; thats one of the things that got me seriously making sure I had my retirement plans lined up. Used to always go to the Del at least once around Christmas to see the decorations and lighting. They have an outdoor ice rink set up in the back, on the beach side, which makes for good weird photos. Not sure what it's like now, but a few years ago stopped bothering - waaay too crowded. The explosion in travel (and wealth), globally, has sort of ruined lots of things due to volume. Coronado at Christmas was, maybe still is, one of them. Wasn't just Chinese - lots of Euros.
This goes back decades, but it's a shame more people don't/didn't get the memo on how bad things are here, as crowding has been the main negative change for most parts of regular life. Posted by: rhomboid at December 17, 2022 12:34 PM (OTzUX) 163

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at December 17, 2022 12:09 PM (nC+QA) Musk has stated that he wants humanity to become a multi-planetary species. That can't happen if the ones that remain on Earth end themselves at the behest of an aggressively self destructive strain of social collectivism that old Twitter was amplifying. Plus, the whole Mars thing falls apart if the said mob mentality brings everything down before he gets there and the powers that be are eagerly searching for another p(l)andemic to finish what they started in 2020. Musk is trying (and has a plan) to "re-invent" Twitter. I don't know any of the details, but...
1) Get rid of the old employees who were part of the problem 2) There was probably no "AI" algorithm to monitor tweets. There were likely thousands of people working to watch tweets and had directions about what to delete or censor. Stop that shit. 3) He wants it to be a more honest and open platform. As people excercise more responsibility, there need to be fewer rules. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people now that WANT chaos and anarchy to tear down our so-called civilization. 4) And one of the symptoms of this is what KT wrote about USD Law School. When may points of view are tolerated and honestly discussed, you can have some freedom. But when one side ones to dominate and censor the "dialogue" and does not even recognize the need for a dialogue of different view points, then civilization decays. Which is where we are at now. As our own J.J. Sefton reminded us yesterday in detail, many of our political problems stem from our educational system.
J.J. has his thumb on part, and only part, of the problem. The other part - the worst, to be honest - is the baked in the cake instinct to obey authority that defines Contemporary Conservatism. As the law givers continue to show their contempt for the citizenry, that many in the citizenry still seem to find virtue in not only a blind obedience to the law ... but celebrate those who enforce the law upon them ... does not bode well for a people that wish to be free. Put that together with what he is rumored to want to do with expanding Twitter -- supposedly do better than what Zuckerberg is trying to do with Facebook and Meta -- and I think we need to pay close attention to how Musk evolves Twitter. As the law givers continue to show their contempt for the citizenry, that many in the citizenry still seem to find virtue in not only a blind obedience to the law ... but celebrate those who enforce the law upon them ... does not bode well for a people that wish to be free.

No. This is NOT the problem. The problem is the dominant outlook is no longer Christian. Only Christianity (out of the three "Western" religions - Progressivism, Islam, Christianity - and paganism) allows for true debate. I do not consider any of them perfect or correct on everything and definitely do not hold them up as saviors or whatever else. They are simply people who are doing certain things with which I agree. When they do things with which I do not agree, I will call them out on it. When they do things with which I agree, I will praise them for it. But I will not praise them in general or smear them in general. I will judge their individual actions and treat them as people, not celebrities or gods. I wish more people would do the same. Academics who want honest discussions without fear of reprisal are beginning to find each other through independent chat rooms using anonymous handles to protect identities. I recently read about a group of anthropologists who are networking this way. They can have open discussion of all kinds of perspectives and viewpoints, discussing recent archeological finds minus the need to couch them in woke terms. Sadly, if they attempted to do this in their own departments or circles, they would be branded and burned at the stake for heresy. We must have each others’ backs and speak out in support of those even when they have different viewpoints. We must not allow the bullies to wiin and shut down honest opinions and discussion.

It is important to remember that all teachers are Marxists. Now, as has been recently demonstrated by the drive of teachers to change your child's gender, all teachers are perverts.
Now, I realize the temptation of Republicans to point out the fallacy of universal statements. But, if they can restrain themselves from bashing somebody they agree with on most things for just one second. Teachers who belong to a union and work for a government make that their primary concern. When the Union wants to talk about sex with kiddies, teachers go along. So even though they are not personally perverts, the agree with right of the Union to force perversion down kiddie's throats, so to speak. Thus, all teachers are Marxists and Perverts. Also, one thing I admire about the USD Law School conversion to Marxism is that it highlights the talent that Republicans have to always avoid the fight, always avoid standing up for principles, and run. Run as fast as you can to a place where you think you will be sheltered from having to defend your principles. Republicans will always quit rather than confront a Democrat.
Consider that the NRO crowd, the most fervent element of anti-Trumpism, spent years defining and discussing Republican principles. Then as soon as a candidate emerged who would embrace those principles, they ran as fast as they could to oppose him. Now again, we are seeing Republicans run as fast as they can to avoid confrontation. "McConnell is corrupt!", they cry. But nobody wants to confront McConnell. Has anybody at least called his office? If Democrats are indeed Marxists and Perverts, at what point should a Christian refuse to be accommodating to them? Posted by: william ferrin at December 17, 2022 04:00 PM (30GVr) 345
