Food Thread: A Butter-Smeared Chicken In Every Pot!

ChipotleChicken.jpg

I guess there is a recipe for what I made last night, but it's just a standard roast chicken with a compound butter under the skin and smeared on the top as much as I could. I didn't do a great job of that, and you can tell by the pale spots, but it sure did taste good, so this one is a keeper.

The compound butter was four ounces of butter, four teaspoons of lemon juice, about a tablespoon of chopped chipotle peppers, and of course S&P. The butter has to be room temperature or you will make a mess and still fail, and microwaving the butter might get you a messy microwave and some melted butter, so better to just leave it on the counter for a couple of hours.

Then just use a small whisk and gently mix in the ingredients until you get a lovely smooth compound butter that would be great on anything! Put most of it under the skin of the breasts and the legs, and the rest on the skin on top.

If someone can think of a better way to do it than smearing it around with your hands, I am all ears!

Oh...400 degrees for about 45 minutes...until the probe reads 155 degrees. And I put the spatchcocked chicken on a bed of sliced onions so they could soak up all of the excess butter.

Yes...it goes wonderfully on the chicken. Or plain. It's chicken-chipotle-lemon-flavored butter...of course it's going to taste great!

First-World Problems...

Wheelwarm.jpg

Heated steering wheels are great! I had an old car that had one, and while I didn't drive it much, whenever I did I would turn the heat on just to enjoy warm hands on a cold day. I have a touch of what is commonly called Raynaud's Syndrome (thanks mom!), which is an odd thing that happens to one finger every now and then...it gets freezing cold compared to all of the other fingers, and it's sort of unpleasant in a deeply spoiled and trivial way.

But almost two years ago I was in the market for a new car, and the one I chose offered heated wheels. Sort of. The chips supposedly weren't available, so I would have to wait until the fourth quarter of the year for a retrofit. Except that was a lie. It took almost two years to get the retrofit, which is amazing considering the fact that the car company has built millions of cars in the interim, and prioritized new builds over existing customers.

That's a big mistake, because although I am very pleased with the car, I will not buy another one because of that deeply flawed business focus.

In addition, they installed ANOTHER feature that was advertised but not built into the car...something that I find pretty irritating, although some people might like it.

Parkcrap.jpg

Parking assist? I guess it is valuable in some circumstances, but does anyone rely on it as a primary bit of information over your eyes and driving skill? I take great pride in my parking, both skill and an almost uncanny ability to find parking spaces, so I am sort of offended by this!

Regardless...GM needs to figure out what they are doing, because they have already alienated me, and I can't be the only one with cold fingers and a long memory!

The Hypocrisy Of The West Is Exposed By Their Separate Morality For Israel

Israel is conducting a war against an entrenched enemy that has had more than 15 years to prepare the battle space. Its enemy has no regard for civilian casualties, and in fact makes tactical decisions to maximize those casualties for propaganda purposes. Their enemy does not abide by the accepted rules of war...they wear no common uniform; they hide amongst civilians; they torture and kill captured soldiers and civilians; and their infrastructure is blended into an urban setting so that it is impossible to target military objectives without striking supposed civilian facilities, homes, schools, etc.

Yet miraculously, Israel has managed to minimize civilian deaths to an extent rarely seen in any battle, much less a war. The hysterical Western media report the death toll as calculated by the Gaza Health Ministry as if it were some unimpeachable number. At the same time they examine under a microscope, every statement from Israel and its military, and loudly proclaim the supposed errors as proof of some nefarious plot to deceive. Yet even accepting the obvious nonsense being pumped into a gullible Western media by the terrorist organization Hamas, Israel has kept civilian casualties to a minimum.

A more bloodthirsty country would have leveled Gaza and killed many times the number of civilians who have died. Imagine if Russia or China had suffered an equivalent terrorist attack on its border. Or for that matter if a large force of narco-terrorists had crossed into Texas or New Mexico or Arizona or California from Mexico and raped and burned and murdered 48,000 American citizens. The clamor for an all-out assault on Mexico and the use of every weapon at our disposal would have been intense and unstoppable.

Yet Israel has resisted the urge -- if it even exists -- for wholesale slaughter. And it's doing an incredible job while under tremendous pressure from the United States and other Western countries to either cease military operations, or scale them back to token attacks on obvious concentrations of terrorists.

Here is Edward N. Luttwak discussing the amazing job that Israel is doing:

Why Israel Is Winning in Gaza

Israel has a fair amount of field artillery in the form of the common 155 mm caliber gun-howitzers, just like the U.S. and other Western armies. But it also has much smaller, much cheaper Israeli-made 160 mm heavy mortars that deliver 30 kilos of high explosives at shorter ranges. The Israelis should have used them abundantly in the Gaza fighting, because parabolic fire is just the thing in urban warfare, but did not because of their own avoidance of collateral casualties … and because of continued alarms and warnings from the U.S.

That was most certainly the case with the exceedingly restrained, indeed inadequate use of Israel’s air power in Gaza. In the 1991 “Desert Storm” attack on Iraq, for which I received a letter of commendation from U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Merrill A. McPeak for target selection before and during the bombing, I never deliberately selected a civilian target. But I do not recall anyone ever telling me that a valuable military target must not be attacked because there may be civilian casualties. But in Gaza, the Israeli air force was hardly allowed to contribute more than a fraction of its strength to the fighting, in deference to the insistent requests coming from the White House.

Read the whole thing...it is fascinating.

The real issue though is that the rest of the Western powers so hell-bent on hamstringing Israel in its existential fight against terrorism would never hold themselves or any other country to such impossible standards. There is a long list of wars just in this century in which civilians were killed at shockingly high rates with nary a peep from the bien pensants in Washington and London and Paris. Iraq and Afghanistan saw huge civilian suffering, and in fact the numbers of refugees created by those wars are not afforded a tenth of the money and media coverage that refugees from the Israeli War of Independence --75 YEARS AGO! -- are given.

Israel is acting in an amazingly moral way in the midst of shocking and almost unbelievable brutality. The country has coalesced around the goal of making itself safe from the terrorists on its southern and northern borders, while adhering to standards of behavior that are a credit to its social fabric, 3,000 year history, and the moral code of Judaism.

Didn't they already do that, you ask?

Well, not quite. A decade ago, the state banned those flimsy single-use shopping bags stores gave away for free, permitting only heavier, more expensive, reusable shopping bags.

This quite predictably increased the amount of waste, so they're going to do it again.

The Saturday Night Joke Or Is It?

British Medical Journal

There is a medical distinction between “Guts” and “Balls”.

We've heard colleagues referring to people with “Guts”, or with “Balls”.

Do they, however, know the difference between them?

Here’s the official distinction; straight from the British Medical Journal: Volume 323; page 295.

GUTS - Is arriving home late, after a night out with the lads, being met by your wife with a broom, and having the “Guts” to ask: “Are you still cleaning, or are you flying somewhere?”

BALLS - Is coming home late after a night out with the lads, smelling of perfume and beer, lipstick on your collar, slapping your wife on the bum and having the “Balls” to say: 'You're next, Chubby.'

I trust this clears up any confusion.

Medically speaking, there is no difference in outcome; both are fatal.

Saturday Evening Movie Thread 02/10/2024 [TheJamesMadison]

Frank Capra

Frank Capra moved to America from Sicily when he was five years old in 1903. He grew up in Los Angeles and went to CalTech where he studied chemical engineering, but he was interested in the movies. After making a short film adaptation of a Rudyard Kipling short story in San Francisco, he ended up finding work as a director (after a brief stint making Harry Langdon comedies) with Harry Cohn at the skid row studio Columbia Pictures. Working for one of the poorest studios had certain advantages in terms of freedom while on set without someone like Irving Thalberg (who ran MGM along with Louis B. Mayer) who set up an assembly line-like system. Capra, essentially once he was on set, could largely do what he wanted, his fights with Cohn being around budgets and stars mostly (Columbia didn't have any and had to borrow from other studios).

It was Capra's efforts that really brought Columbia out of skid row and allowed Cohn to rub elbows with the major studio executives, directing a series of increasingly successful pictures until Lady for a Day when the studio received its first Best Picture nomination at the Oscars (they would win the following year with It Happened One Night).

Capra's success brought him freedom, and with that freedom he made a series of films from 1934 to 1947 that rooted themselves in the American cultural consciousness to the point where the term Capraesque is still understood in the popular lexicon. A Capraesque film is unabashedly pro-American, on the side of the little guy, and hopeful that things will work out positively in the end when the people band together to make things better.

That freedom came to an end with the final series of arguments with Harry Cohn on Mr. Smith Goes to Washington after which Capra moved to Warner Bros. for a couple of films before he started an independent film company with William Wyler and a couple of other filmmakers called Liberty Films. It was with that money he funded It's a Wonderful Life which was a financial disappointment which, combined with the tax law structures of the time, necessitated the selling of Liberty Films to Paramount in the middle of the production of Capra's next film, State of the Union. From the late-40s to the early 60s, he only made four more films with a decade in between two pairs of two, Capra having lost all of his freedom and becoming first a contract director at Paramount and then a pawn to two movie stars (Frank Sinatra and then Glenn Ford).

What made Capra unique among the Golden Age of Hollywood? What made his films stick out and connect with audiences, giving them a life far longer than the momentary existence he imagined for them (making the comparison more than once between his films and a newspaper that is read once and then discarded)? I think it comes down to a few things. Firstly, he was very good at the large things of narrative. Second was that he was very good at the small business within a film that made them entertaining.

SHERRYS-SWEE.jpg

Hello to our gardeners, putterers and winter dreamers! Today, we're returning for a few moments to yesteryear, specifically four years ago, for some nice photos of heart-shaped tomatoes, as Valentine's Day nears. These tomatoes, as a class, are meatier than most tomatoes, with intriguing flavor and generally with few seeds. The one above is Sherry's Sweet Heart.

6-10 oz. fruit, Some are Larger. Large Pink Heart. Beautiful. Meaty, dense fleshed pink heart tomato. Good production, Mid-season. Plant has droopy wild foliage common with hearts. Very good flavor, well balanced, sweet-acid.

Wouldn't you love to have one about now?

At $349 and 40 grams they're one tenth the price and one fifteenth the weight of Apple's Vision Pro. They're about the size and weight of regular eyeglasses, and you can add prescription lenses for an extra $99.

The shortcoming is that the AR display is only 640x400 and covers a small part of your vision, but that's really what you want when you're actually using them in everyday life. GAINZZZ: The Legendary Journeyzzz

The Soybots at Vox say that you're eating too much protein and it's making you all toxic.

voxprotein.jpg

There's always an agenda behind these types of stories -- and that agenda is aggressive, propgandistic vegetarianism.

Kenny Torrella is a staff writer for Vox's Future Perfect section, with a focus on animal welfare and the future of meat.

This story has been adapted from Meat/Less, Vox's newsletter series to help you easily incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet. For five weeks, you'll get challenges, recipes, and insights on how to make eating less meat work for you. Sign up here!

So there you go. This isn't about human health at all; veganism is anti-human-health.

It's only pro-animal-health. And while I am a great big softie when it comes to animals -- human health comes first, soyboy beta cucks and anti-human propagandists.

Americans are oddly obsessed with protein, consuming around twice the daily amount recommended in the federal dietary guidelines.

LOL, the federal dietary guidelines are wrong about everything and also themselves distorted by demands from the vegetarian lobby.

You're supposed to eat 6-11 servings of grains per day, plus 4-6 servings of vegetables!

Also, the very low figure they cite, 50 grams of protein per day, is a minimum RDA. There are no known health risks for eating more, even much more, protein.

The National Academies of Sciences' more nuanced guidelines break down suggested protein intake by body weight, recommending 0.36 grams of protein per pound of weight every day (pregnant and elderly people should consume more, along with highly active individuals). For the average American man, weighing just under 200 pounds, that's 72 grams. For the average woman, weighing just under 171 pounds, that's 61.5 grams. American men exceed that recommendation by 31 percent, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey data; women exceed it by about 12 percent.

People who aren't being bullied into appeasing Big Vegetable say that the figure is more like 0.8 g to 1g per pound of body weight, for people who aren't active and who aren't trying to gain muscle, and something like 1.2 grams per pound for more active people.

Or more.

Also, everyone processes protein less efficiently as they age so the older you are, the more you need.

Public health authorities design these recommendations with plenty of slack, meaning they're higher than what most people actually need to ensure they don't become protein deficient. But despite exceeding the recommended intake, 60 percent of US adults are trying to get even more of it into their diets.

Food companies have taken notice, adding protein to seemingly everything -- pasta, chips, ice cream, crackers, and more -- over the last decade. But this obsession could be making us sick: Excessive protein consumption, especially from cholesterol-rich animal-based foods, is correlated with increased risk of cancer and heart disease.

Oh shut the fuck up, Kenny Longstockings.

Let's get to the real meat of it, huh?

Excessive protein consumption is also wrecking the planet, with meat and dairy production accounting for upward of one-fifth of greenhouse gas emissions.

And there you go. It's not about human health, it's about The Health of Our Fragile Ecosystem.

Florida Dad
@FloridadadD
I remember when the federal government told us to eat seven servings of bread a day.

Actually, Florida Dad, I believe the guidance was 6 to 11 servings of grain per day. The food chart had nothing to do with health; it was all about appeasing the various agribusiness corporations of Big Food.

@HarmfulOpinion

According to the federal government, we should be eating ridiculous amount of grain. So I’ll just disregard what they have to say on the subjective nutrition.

sixtoelevenservingsofgrain.jpg

Arturo Boremano (definitely NOT "Arthur Boreman")
@ArthurBoreman

"2x as much of it as the federal government advises"

Me?

Oh, nothing, I'm just remembering that time government dietary guidelines kicked off the obesity crisis in America.

lowfatdietresults.jpg

What a great time for this nonsense article to come out, because I'm pursuing a very high protein diet, and I feel better than I have in a while.

I'm weight training and trying to get 1.2 or 1.5 grams of protein per pound. I'm drinking whey protein shakes every day, and every day I'm eating eggs and bacon and burgers.

And honestly, I feel great. Not only am I gaining muscle, but my sinuses are mostly clear. (This might not be due to the extra protein per se but because, as I'm having a lot of meat and eggs, I'm reducing how much cheese and dairy I eat, and I know I'm lactose intolerant and I can guess that dairy causes inflammation of my mucous membranes, too. But I dunno... I am having whey protein powder and cassein.)

Bonus: People get hungry and crave snacks when they're not getting enough nutrition, including, especially, protein. If you're getting a lot of protein, you have much less desire to eat crap. My sweet tooth has declined a lot.

Anyway:

Don't be a Kenny Torrella, guys.

Don't ever be a Kenny Torrella.

kennytorella.jpg

In other health news: Intermittent fasting seems to cause health-promoting, weight-maintaining changes to both the gut and brain.

Researchers from China studied 25 volunteers classed as obese over a period of 62 days, during which they took part in an intermittent energy restriction (IER) program -- a regime that involves careful control of calorie intake and fasting on some days.

Not only did the participants in the study lose weight -- 7.6 kilograms (16.8 pounds) or 7.8 percent of their body weight on average -- there was also evidence of shifts in the activity of obesity-related regions of the brain, and in the make-up of gut bacteria.

"Here we show that an IER diet changes the human brain-gut-microbiome axis," says health researcher Qiang Zeng from the Second Medical Center and National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases in China.

"The observed changes in the gut microbiome and in the activity in addiction-related brain regions during and after weight loss are highly dynamic and coupled over time."

I guess it's too late to try a "Dry January" but if you want to cut alcohol consumption:
reducing liquor consumption is more do-able than abstaining altogether.

Every year thousands of people take part in the Dry January sobriety challenge to improve their health and regain control of their drinking. But if you can't commit to a full month of abstinence, take heart: You don't have to go cold turkey to improve your relationship with alcohol.

A semi-dry ritual dubbed "Damp January" has become an annual event for people who want to cut back on alcohol without giving it up entirely.

Studies show that even a modest reduction in drinking can lead to improvements in blood pressure, mental health and liver health. It can lower risk for cancer and heart disease. And you may even notice improvements in your sleep, energy levels and skin.

There's not one best way to do the Damp January challenge. Here are some ways to cut back on alcohol.

-Special occasion drinking: Avoid drinking for the month of January except for special occasions, like a wedding, birthday party or anniversary celebration.

-Add more dry days to your month: Reduce the number of days you drink during January.

-Consume fewer drinks in a setting: For a month, cut back on the amount you drink on each occasion. If you regularly have two or more glasses of wine with dinner, for instance, commit to just one drink per sitting.

-A combination approach: Experts say it's best to reduce the number of days you drink and the amount that you drink on each occasion. You can set a goal to have a specific number of dry days each week and fewer servings on the days that you drink. You can drink only at special events or be sober on special occasions. Pick the strategy that works for you.

The important thing to know is that any strategy you use to reduce how much and how often you drink will be beneficial, said Katie Witkiewitz, director of the Center on Alcohol, Substance Use And Addiction at the University of New Mexico and a former president of the Society of Addiction Psychology.

"Any reduction in drinking is associated with improvements in health," she said. "As your drinking increases you have increased health risks, and as your drinking decreases you have decreased health risks."

"Even if you didn't drink for one day that's still one day less of drinking," she added.

It's at times like this I wish I were Owen Wilson, so I could say Woww.

Lawsuit: Former Harvey Weinstein Assistant and Current LucasFilm Producer Leslye Headland Donated to GoFundMe Dedicated to Slandering Gina Carano

Leslye Headland was Harvey Weinstein's executive assistant when it is known that a "female assistant" was shepherding in young actresses to be molested or r*ped by Harvey Weinstein.

Was that Leslye Headland? We don't know. No one ever says, and no one ever asks. She's a loud lesbian, so no one is allowed to ever do anything but praise her for being So Stunning and So Brave.

Of course Kaffeine Kennedy hired this woman with very few credits, and no credits that would suggest any kind of competency to direct a Star Wars project, because she is female and diverse, at least sexually. (She's white as a ghost but she gets a big boost from being a lesbian.)

When Gina Carano was being targeted by a gang of Twitter psychopaths who attacked, threatened, and slandered her every day for refusing to post her pronouns as they demanded, she discovered that Leslye Headland had donated to a GoFundMe whose mission was to target Gina Carano as a "bigot."

Moreover, the lawsuit alleges that a "creative" at LucasFilm -- not an executive, not a craftsman, but a "creative" -- founded the GoFundMe.

Could this be former Harvey Weinstein assistant Leslye Headland?

Is Disney or LucasFilm behind the account designed to harass and threaten their employee Gina Carano?

We'll see -- discovery is going to be more entertaining that anything shit out by Kaffeine Kennedy's Flop Factory.

In Carano's newly filed lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm, her lawyer details how she was the victim of harassment. It specifically details that after she put the words "Beep bop, and boop" in her Twitter bio she was "subjected ... to long phone calls demanding an explanation and criticizing her for not embracing what some see as mandatory solidarity with a vocal element of the transgender activist community."

The lawsuit also details she was "required ... to meet with representatives of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination), a national organization that promotes LGBTQ+ acceptance, something she willingly did."

After allegedly receiving positive feedback, The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm were not satisfied and "continued to demand a public apology. ... Defendants went so far as to try and convince Carano's publicist to force Carano to issue a statement admitting to mocking or insulting an entire group of people, which Carano had never done."

The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm also "rejected Carano's proposed alternate statement."

From there, "Carano went to donate to a GoFundMe page allegedly set up in support of the transgender community. When she opened the link, she read that the fund was supposedly created by a Lucasfilm creative and was directly targeting Carano, defaming her by accusing her of being a "bigoted" actress. Accordingly, Carano did not donate."

The lawsuit then alleges "Carano brought this to Lucasfilm's attention, who denied the GoFundMe account was established by any Lucasfilm employee. Shortly thereafter, the account was changed to call Carano "ignorant" and the identity of the organizer was changed to no longer identify a Lucasfilm employee."

It then reveals that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy wanted Carano to join a struggle session on ZOOM with her and 45 other employees "who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community."

The purpose of this struggle session, according to the lawsuit, "was a 'litmus test'" to determine if she had the "willingness to endure such harassment and humiliation."

The group was described by her publicist as "a friendly group that WANT Gina to succeed." However, multiple employees that were to take part in the struggle session had contributed to the GoFundMe campaign including Leslye Headland.

The lawsuit states, "several had contributed to the anti-Carano GoFundMe account, including filmmaker Leslye Headland, who was scheduled to produce a Star Wars production."

By the way: Leslye Headlan's Star Wars project is, reportedly, a disaster. I'm sure you're all surprised.

You also won't be too surprised to learn it's the most Stunning and Brave Star Wars disaster yet: It has a trans character.

OF.

COURSE!

Below: The digital lynch mob encouraged by Disney and LucasFilm to threaten, harass, and defame Disney contractor Gina Carano.
