On the topic of "this is it for Biden" ...
I remember when Sam Donaldson said of the Monica Lewinsky revelations that "if true" the Clinton administration had days not weeks. The revelations were of course true. Clinton stayed in office until the end of his term, survived impeachment and had very positive polling throughout. So I am not so sanguine about terrible news being the end of a Democrat administration. The Dems are fantastic at sliding that Overton Window. One Friday I got an email from the business, announcing Joe had suddenly, and unexpectedly, passed away. I was a little sad, as he had seemed like a nice guy. Hello. Little dogs are aggressive because they have to prove themselves. Big dogs know they are large and have fangs and can just kind of look at you and say "Look. Check these. I could kill you, but I'm a retriever! Everything is awesome!"
Little dogs don't have that and they can't legally buy guns. So they have to improvise. That means a lot of teeth baring and stuff. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at February 09, 2024 10:42 PM (CHHv1) Posted by: Nightwatch at February 09, 2024 10:44 PM (TDvv2) 78

Here is how bad the lasting narrative of the deep state can get - just got back from a dinner with a NYS licensed firearm seller - he suggested vehemently that NYS could lock you up if you owned a firearm, including a pistol, simple if NYS refused to license that firearm - even regardless of whether you requested it be registered.
He hadn't even heard of Bruen. This is really sad, but NYS has long since trained its law-abiding citizens that they are not even allowed to own pistols unless the state agrees to license them that right. Posted by: Boswell at February 09, 2024 10:56 PM (K+UlC) 104

His The Stone Tape is also brilliant - exploring X Files territory long before Chris Carter came along. Great social critic/prophet too, predicting reality tv and its lurid excesses forty years before there was a hint of it. I still think Paddy Chayefsky cribbed from him in Network. Rhodesia story: Towards the end of the Bush War, the government announced it would pay bounties on terrorists, "Dead or Alive." Some American mercs heard this, grabbed their gear, and ran an ambush that night. They tossed the bodies in a truck, drove to the nearest police station, and demanded the rewards. "But...but..but," sputtered the policeman, "You KILLED them!"
"And that," the merc said, "was when we realized they weren't serious about winning the war." Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at February 09, 2024 11:04 PM (3UsVM) 117

First, never accept leftist verbiage - “email scandal” doesn’t come close to being accurate.
Mrs Clinton had multiple unsecured computer servers with which she was conducting official state business and failed to safeguard state secrets. Among other things. Notably removal of documents or imagery from a SCIF. There is no internet or email even possible. Somebody stole those documents, or took pictures of them, etc. Absolutely no fucking way they could get on a computer server without black letter law Federal Felonies. USC Title 18 blah blah. Intent ain’t got nothin’ to do with it. Same with Joe. He never had authority to have any of it, never mind in a cum-stained cardboard box in his trashy garage. At work, back in the 90s, they had voice message recorders that were hooked to each office phone. Not tape anymore but digital. This was a very large office of engineers. One time some guy's wife called while he wasn't there and started leaving a message. We all heard this because it was set to speaker somehow. She started going into sweet then mushy then sexy, and a bunch of us started gathering and a manager was trying to put it to mute then started extremely detailed descriptions of what she planned for various parts of his body but the manager pulled the cord out ripping the carpet. That guy had a hard time for a while. Posted by: banana Dream at February 09, 2024 11:39 PM (Y6IkP) 181

I spent the evening chasing down Putin's comment that there is no Ukraine. In his conversation with Tucker he said Ukraine was a construct of the West. I used available online maps [they would much rather you buy a map than view it - anyway] to establish the existence of Ukraine. I found maps from 1850 through the formation of the League of Nations. The url says 1920. There's also a 1923.
The first reference to Ukraine is a German war map from 1917. I tried to download the 1914 map but it was crashed the browser so I don't know if the reference is there or not. That's a big score for Putin. Posted by: Braenyard at February 10, 2024 12:01 AM (vf7x3) 203

I think I recall Weird Dave had his rv break down travelling thru ND and a very kind aos couple (and others) offered rides and assistance, etc.
That's not the half of it. They put us up for a week while it was being fixed, gave us an extra car so that we could drive around. And gave us the full tour of Bismarck, North Dakota. We almost moved there instead of Texas because of it. I can't remember his board name and I'm not gonna post his real name. But they were Morons. Morons are fabulous people no matter where they are. AOP - the Quatermass films are indeed awesome. If you have a chance, check out the original BBC serials they were derived from. (I think the only one that's missing is the Quatermass Experiment, a casualty of the BBC practice of not preserving recordings of some of their programming.) Quatermass's creator Nigel Kneale also did a lesser-known BBC film called The Stone Tape that broke a lot of ground that shows like Fringe and the X Files explored later on.

Well, I got the shell of the second wall cabinet built, and secured to the wall (and ceiling ) in the kitchen. And mounted the under-cabinet LED fixture that shines down on the countertop. Kitchen is really beginning to look finished. Picked up a 4X8 sheet of pine-veneer plywood today for 49 dollars, which will become the 4 shelves for the cabinets. Bottom shelf is just a false bottom to conceal the pancake electrical box for the lighting units. Then one shelf placed midway in the cab's. They had melamine-coated MDF board, which would have made nice shelves, but it would have cost 50% more, and left me with a big hunk of waste MDF. Leftover plywood is never really waste.

The current IAU definition of planet, which they hammered out in 2006 is thus: 1) In orbit around the Sun 2) Is in hydrostatic equilibium 3) Has "cleared the neighborhood" of debris Note 1) means this applies only to our Solar System. There is no definition of exoplanets yet. 2) basically means "is roughly spherical/round". Mercury and even Mars aren't technically in hydrostatic equilibrium, but they are planets. A sufficiently massive body could not be odd shaped. You could not have cube shaped object above a certain mass (unless you had some very, very strong and exotic material to hold that shape) 3) When an object gets big enough, it begins to gravitationally dominate it's near neighborhood. You could not for instance, have a massive body in about the same orbit as Earth. There would be collision or ejection event. (You can come close, see Trojan orbits, or "co-orbits" in general) Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2024 12:25 AM (w6EFb) 233

To me Ukraine isn't a western power concept. Like all of The Russian empire there are many states if you will that at different parts of centuries that were part of or separate of Russia.
Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania could equally be in the same boat category as Ukraine. That is why Russia is a Empire. Posted by: Skip at February 10, 2024 12:33 AM (fwDg9) 242

Indeed. Imagine a cube about the mass and size of the earth. Imagine the environment near the corners and edges. The local g vector would not be tangent to the surface, but pointing toward the center of mass. Locally, there would be strong side-ways forces. And those forces naturally push things into a round shape. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2024 12:36 AM (w6EFb) 246

There's a very real and compelling argument that Ukraine provided the nucleus of what became Greater Russia in the form of the Kievan Rus. The Rurik dynasty based in Kiev from the late thirteenth to the mid-fifteenth centuries served as the template that would be copied by the Tsars in what was then Muscovy.

Ukraine also shows up in history label White Russia. My Napoleonic Russian units are labeled as territoriales or regions, but. In the Russian Army recruiting isn't by that, they got mixed together. Only Cossacks did come from and get recruited by region. I have Ukraine Cossacks and those men in a Ukraine Cossack were Ukrainians. My Tartar Cossacks were Muslims. Bug Cossacks were from the Bug River area. My Polish Uhlans were not Polish.

Posted by: AmericanKestrel -------------------------------- The lines were codified at the 1920/23 Paris peace conference. Putin didn't put a specific date on it but it was around the turn of the century. The 1900 and before maps, none of them, back to 1850, had a hint of Ukraine. The 1914 map cratered my browser several times. And the 1917 German war map, out of the blue, had Ukraine on it. Putin said it was a western conjecture and by maps, which we all use to define political boundaries agree. That's the framework. I have no meat for the bones. I was with one of the very few that took a public school taught course on Russian and Soviet history in the 80s. I also took three different Russian history courses in college. One was Soviet history to present one was Rajan history from 1805 to 1914 or something. The third course was earlier Russian history.. for sure a major part of the first lessons was an about Kievan Rus. That is where the Russians saw their cultural ancestry and that is where American colleges describe the beginning of modern Russia, as modern as it is, which isn’t that modern.

313 was the year that Constantine promulgated the Edict of Milan, allowing religious toleration in the late Roman Empire for Christians, and paving the way for the eventual ascendancy of the Church based on the bishopric of Rome. 1517, as pointed out, the conventional date for the onset of the Reformation. Gibson's referring to the overwhelming religious, social, political and economic impact the Catholic faith was able to exert during that time. Russia was invaded by two major armies bent on conquest, The Grand Armee and The Wehrmacht, with high loss of life and Moscow burned in 1812. Then there's the whole Holodomor event which Putin, I believe, glossed over and was a big reason for Ukrainians viewing the Nazis as liberators and joining them to fight the commies. Y5. The ONLY time I've seen the Horde step up against your "speech".
When was you focused on antagonizing The Horde by means of micro-argumentative nonsensical picayune antagonisms, which you could dissect by means of your (admittedly) superior argumentative skills. Vs. any really heavyweight debates over Adam Smith or Thomas Sowell or even P.J. O' Rourke. When you weigh in with your not inconsiderable intellect on subjects which really matter, you'll notice, there's hardly a pip or squeek issued in objection, thereof. You can really f'kn' MATTER, when you choose to join the debates which really DO f'kn matter. And that's when you're really at your f'kn, best, too, you know. Ditch the picayune. You don't need to GO there. Okay, first of all, I lied, I am not 29. I seem to remember doing a report about Russia in the sixth grade. It was a team project and a good friend of mine was smart and an artist, we liked working together. Anyway I am pretty sure that we referenced Ukraine as part of Russia. We got an A on the project no matter how misguided we were.

In this day and age, there’s no excuse for a CPAP that leaks regularly. I have seen loved ones and people you’re dealing with and they’re constantly leaking constantly making noise and it seems impossible to get them to fit, right. But when you use it on yourself and your fit, it is easy to get it done. my only point is this, have the provider fix it because in this day and there’s no reason why a CPAP can’t fit properly and work properly. A lot of people in this industry. Don’t want to go the extra mile so you have to lead them.

Tell you what; tell a Ukrainian immigrant that they are Russian. See the response you get.
I knew a couple of Ukrainian families in the '50s. They distinguished themselves from Russians then. I worked with three guys (techs) in the '90s who bot really pissed if anyone thought they were Russian. This doesn't apply to the Crimea and vicinity, because Stalin imported a bunch of Russians to replace the Ukrainians he had starved out. Ukrainians have a real hard-on about Russians. Look up Holodomor. There's an area, today, labeled "Ukraine" where the people cal, themselves "Ukrainians". Do you think that Texas should be given "back" to Mexico because some map from the early 1800's has "Mexico" written over San Antonio. Fuck Putin and his megalomaniac delusions. These HYIPs are considered low-risk because they have proven themselves over time. The local watering holes have been doing a booming business for years and there are now some twenty or so gay bars, nightclubs, cantinas, discotheques, martini spots and lounges, and all of them are in the unique part of the city known as the South Side, sometimes also referred to as the Romantic Zone or Old Town.
