NC Cult
Chris Short, of Conservative Thinking (and other blogs), sends along this story about a potential cult in North Carolina.
Strangely enough, the group Chris mentions, the "Human Service Alliance," has a "
seal of approval" of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, for whatever that's worth. In fact, Princeton even appears to
approve of this group. There are various other individuals that certainly
claim this is a cult.
Is it a cult? I don't know. Using the strict definition of "cult," you can show that the U.S. Military is a "cult," too. However, I certainly believe in full exposure. Read Chris' story, and research before you jump into things. As
Billy the Blogging Poet said in the comments to Chris' post -- "I looked in to this very place about three years ago and decided something wasn't exactly as it seemed..." Trust your instincts.

Graphic Pictures
Conservative Cat has posted a bunch of pictures from Iraq that are simply too graphic for the media of this country to show. However, since this is the internet, anyone can post anything. So head on over and view some of those too-graphic-for-the-media pictures. You won't regret it.

Terrorist vs. Freedom Fighter
This one is for those liberals who actually believe it's patriotic to disagree with the President on foreign policy (it's not).
Do you know the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist?
A terrorist targets the population to affect change in their country through fear.
A freedom fighter targets the people in power to affect change through a change of the power base.

Two points: it is not patriotic to disagree with the president on any policy because you don't like him(her?) or are of the opposing party. It is a patriotic duty to speak out against a policy one thinks is wrong-headed/immoral etc. I welcome debate; I don't beleive in name-calling or playing grown up versions of color-war.
The difference between a terrorist (who may target the power base as well as citizens) and a freedom fighter is what they are fighting for. Saddaam Hussein was a master criminal who was terrorizing his populace into compliance, like Hitler, and Stalin and all the rest, his being deposed was for the betterment of the people as a whole. It was not to become the power, but to release the power to everyone.
At least, that is my opinion.

Hmmm... I'd be careful with that idea of defining a freedom fighter as what they are fighting for...
However, I think you're dead on with that last part about "the betterment of the people as a whole." Now if we can just get others to agree on what the betterment of people is...
Thanks for stopping by!

Nice Political Speech
Need a platform to run on for elected office? I think this one, although old and used, is perfect:
"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can."

The shame of Barry Goldwater was he was painted as a war-mongering nut job by the kennedy crowd. Truth was he was a patriot of the first magnitude who would have made a much better president but because kennedy was martyred he has reached cult status much like lincoln.

Being Smart is Hard
Sometimes it is annoying being so smart. I miss the bliss of the ignorance.
I'm trying to mix a small bit of concrete. I got the container and read the directions. They make no sense at all, probably because I'm thinking about it too hard. I am supposed to mix 5-1/2 parts of the mix with 1 part water. I have 10 pounds of mix.
Sounds easy? Fine, you tell me if the "parts" are by volume or weight.
Do I take the ten pounds of mix and mix them with 1.8
pounds of water? Or do I completely ignore the fact that it weighs 10 pounds (then why include that information on the damn package) and pour the mix into a bucket to determine it's liquid volume, then calculate the proper ratio? And if it's the latter, why in all that is Holy couldn't they put the damn volume measurement on the package?

I have been working on tile in my house; mixing mortar to lay the tile, then mixing grout once the mortar has had time to set and grouting it. The instructions are far clearer with that. Mix ___oz. of admixture (instead of water) with ____ lbs of mortar/grout mix.
My guess would be to mix them by volume, but that's just a guess, I take no responsibility for being wrong.
Posted by: Echo Zoe at July 11, 2005 09:56 AM (K+h36)
4
I even emailed the company and they haven't responded.
I'm guessing it's by volume, simply because I can't imagine most people being capable of determining the weight of water...so as soon as the storm gets through, I think I'm going to try it...
Posted by: Ogre at July 11, 2005 09:58 AM (/k+l4)
5
I surely hope you are joking about this?
Take a container, any container doesn't matter.
Fill said container 5 and 1/2 times and empty it into larger container. Fill said container once with water and empty that into the afore mentioned container that has the concrete in it.
Mix
Use as inteneded.
Your joking right?
Posted by: Machelle at July 11, 2005 11:52 AM (ZAyoW)
6
So what is the volumetric equivalent of 10 POUNDS? Why can't they simply put on the damn package: "mix with 2 gallons of water?"
Posted by: Ogre at July 11, 2005 11:56 AM (/k+l4)
7
Wouldn't it just be easier to measure it out in 5 1/2 containers and then add water then trying to rack your brain to figure out how much water to add to a 10lb bag?
Men, you make things so much harder.
Posted by: Machelle at July 11, 2005 12:04 PM (ZAyoW)
8
Being smart can truly be a curse.
And I don't have that many containers -- I want to use all the bag, so I don't know what size container will make 5.5 of them! I just want to dump the darn bag in a bucket and add some water!
Posted by: Ogre at July 11, 2005 12:51 PM (/k+l4)
9
Water weighs one ounce per fl. ounce, if that helps.
So figure 29 oz of water for the bag of cement.
I can't imagine that it'd be by volume of cement, since it's a powder & volume depends on how tightly it's packed.
Of course, I'm not a construction worker.

Well thanks for the tip!
As I read your comment, the nice people at Quikcrete mailed me back:
"You should use volume for mixture ratio. The instructions are a starting amount of water. You should add additional water as require to achieve a peanut butter consistency."
Now why couldn't they just add that sentence onto the darn package?
Posted by: Ogre at July 11, 2005 05:55 PM (L0IGK)

What the heck are you doing reading the directions for, anyway? Real men never read the directions, or ask for them, for that matter!
I made the same mistake once, trying to make some hamburger helper. It said to brown the hamburger. To me, brown runs the full range from light tan to just short of charcoal.
I stopped reading the directions and cooked it until it looked like cooked hamburger. It was just fine........

Frank J.?
This week The Alliance has quite a different question. Usually they ask about the goings-on of one evil Glennn Reynolds (oh, he IS evil). We here at Ogre's View often send our staff on crack crack staff out to dig up some dirt. However, this week, they are more curious about some person named "Frank J." Seeing as the staff really didn't have anything else to do since the pot plants haven't finished growing.
The staff stumbled out into the light of day, some after
quite a night. They quickly ran back for the cover of darkness. However, as soon as they returned to their computers, the found clear and convincing evidence that one Frank J. had been
sabotaging Harvey's Computer. Is it possible that this Frank J. of
IMAO fame could actually be in league with the one and only evil Glennn?
Then the staff uncovered some really damming evidence of some collusion between the
evil One and this Frank J.. It's pretty serious, and posted at evil Glennn's site by evil Glennn! You should see this one.
Update: It seems that the link above has mysteriously been removed from the evil Glennn site. Look, after finding evidence that suddenly disappears and watching evil Glennn start
hacking Alliance sites, I'm scared. The staff is running for Friendlies and some Fribbles...

Anyone have a clue? I'm submitting it to the
Tarheel Tavern (hosted this week by
Scrutiny Hooligans), because it grows wild here in North Carolina. I've seen a couple of them (in my yard), and they grow REALLY fast.
For scale, in case you can't tell by the window in the background, this thing grew leaves about three feet across in a period of 2-3 weeks. The stem is soft, so I'm sure it would be classified as some sort of "weed," but the HUGE leaves really makes them look kinda neat to me.

I suppose it could be a sunflower-type plant, but as I recall most sunflower plants are simply tall and narrow -- this thing spreads out wide while it goes up.
Now I like the beanstalk idea -- it sure appears big enough to climb!

Revolution in Consciousness

Join the Revolution in Consciousness today! The Revolution started over at The Evangelical Outpost. Per Joe's words, we must all join the Revolution to raise our own consciousness and then use that raised consciousness to exert pressure on the G8 leaders (I think this is a little like that empathic chick in Star Trek TNG).
Something must be done, even if it doesn't work.

Cat in a Cat
This week, like every week, we (and yes, that is the Royal "We") try to take things a little more relaxed on Fridays. As my previous post might have indicated, it's a little tough with the world being what it is -- and that's not even considering all the folks down in Florida that are about to take another unwanted bath.
So I headed out today for some weekly cat blogging, hoping to find a cat in a cat. No,

We're Still Here

Despite what the screaming Democrats are saying, Britain, we're still here, and we're still with you. And you Democrats (and the French) who claim we brought this on ourselves, feel free to shove your head back in the sand, I'm not going to.
Terrorists, that's strike two. I think some strategic bombing of Mecca is in order. With strike three, we break out the serious weaponry.
They have decided to escalate this, so let's escalate. Increased weaponry and destruction. More bunker busters. More flamethrowers. Bigger cannons. More "torture" at Gitmo. In case some of you still don't get it -- this IS a religious war. They will not stop until they are dead. I want this to stop.

By Your Own Words
A few words to those people who are still voting for Democrats, especially in North Carolina. I'd like to point out exactly where the people you are voting for stand on things -- they certainly won't tell you -- but I'll just let them speak for themselves:
Paul Luebke, Democrat Representative:
“The question is still open whether cutting any tax ... is a good idea.’’
That's correct. Your Democrats in the House of Representatives honestly believe that cutting ANY tax is a bad idea. That's why they raised dozens and dozens of taxes on YOU this year, including cable, television, newspapers, movies, food, sales, and income taxes.
Rep. Hugh Holliman (D-Davidson):
"to make that decision [legislative decisions] it comes down to the fairness for the people of North Carolina."
Your Democrat Representatives do not believe in truth or justice. They make their decisions not based on whether something is right or wrong, but whether or not it's "fair." So much for the uniquely American Way.
Rep. Bill Culpepper:
"I have no agenda except loyalty to my speaker"
And just in case you were under the illusion that calling or communicating with your Democrat Representative had a purpose, they confirm that is not the case. They will continue to do what they want, when they want, to enrich themselves, no matter what you say.
Still enjoy voting for Democrats in North Carolina?

Perhaps, Democrats are looking at how Bush's tax cuts deeply affected our economic well-being. After the damage done, it's easy to see why Democrats would feel they need to raise taxes instead of cutting them.

Thief, thief!
Evil Glennn stole my evil glennn quote! No, really!
I made my changes at the beginning of the month, just like normal. I put the new layout in place, made some minor adjustments, then sat back to admire my handiwork before I moved all the blogrolls code. Then I noticed it -- my Evil Glennn quote was gone. Missing. Absolutely no sign of it.
So, I did what all computer geek web designers do, I simply cursed, finished my pop-tart, popped another can of Mountain Dew, and went back to the code. I thought for a moment, then came up with a brilliant, brand-new evil Glennn quote. I posted it on the source, saved it, and republished it. As I finished off the Mountain Dew, I watched the page load with expectation. The quote appeared!
I went to the fridge and got another Mountain Dew and tried to up my hit count by hitting the "refresh" button (my mind blocking out the 1/2-hour limit for hits to count) -- the quote was gone! I refreshed AGAIN, and it was still missing. Well, maybe I had not saved or rebuilt the site correctly. Back to the site, check the quote -- nope, it's missing. Put it back in, save again, republish, throw away empty Mountain Dew, then back to previewing the site. Bam -- quote is there, everything is OK.
I got up to pee, came back and hit refresh (after grabbing another Mountain Dew). The quote was gone again! I checked the access logs and found this interesting entry:
Domain Name: INSTAPUNDIT.COM
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: NS.HMDNS.NET

Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 08-apr-2004
Creation Date: 23-may-2001
Expiration Date: 23-may-2006
So evil Glennn is now apparently expanding his empire, attempting to assimilate and steal all the miscellaneous Alliance evil Glennn quotes! Alliance members, keep a close eye on YOUR quote -- the war has just escalated!

We Stand With You

Today is the day for the
Stop the ACLU blogburst. They were announcing the opening of a new site to fight the communists in the ACLU from destroying America.
However, today, we pause from our normal goings-on to pray and think of the poor, innocent victims of the cowardly terrorists who desire to destroy all "unbelievers." Those that I know from across the great pond are well, but my thoughts and prayers are with those who were not so fortunate.
But British Prime Minister Tony Blair said it best, and Mr. Blair, we stand tall with you:
"We will not be terrorized."

I've been checking all day for your take on this, Ogre. You have not disappointed.
We will go on. As we did through the Blitz and through two decades of IRA attacks.
As we do in Iraq.
God bles you.

Thank you. I'm not sure that this is a time for words, other than those that Mr. Blair said. I was very glad to see that you were fine -- I tried to leave you comments, but had major internet troubles reaching many sites today! I could read, just not post comments...

I appreciate the link Ogre. I seem to have chosen a bad day to open the new site...well, no i didn't those damn terrorists bombed our best ally. My boss kept me busy at work all freakin day, so I couldn't post about it. It bothered me that I couldn't post about it till I got home from work. They definitely have our support. I was finally able to put something up about it.

Not necessarily a bad day to be kept busy.

May God richly Bless our brothers and sisters across the pond in this moment of need, and may God forgive me for hoping I can one day, SLAUGHTER a terrorist in cold blood.

Amen, GTL.
When someone's going to die, I choose the terrorist first.

Supreme Court Nominee
This week's Christian Views Symposium, sponsored by the wonderful Lennie, asks:
What philosophy you would like to see in Bush’s Nominee to replace Justice O’Connor and why?
To me, that's a very easy question to answer. It's very simple, but I think the actual odds of it happening are very, very small.
I want a judge who will interpret the United States Constitution as it was written.
That's all. I don't want someone who is going to "find" things in the Constitution that were not there 20 years ago. I don't want someone who is going to use European standards in determining their decisions. I do not want someone who is going to use "evolving, living, societal" standards. I want someone who will very simply and very clearly interpret what was written. As James Wilson said ( one of the original justices on the Supreme Court):
The first and governing maxim in the interpretation of a statute is to discover the meaning of those who made it.
And just one more quote that shows why:
What a metamorphosis would be produced in the code of law if all it's ancient phraseology were to be taken in its modern sense.
-- James Madison
Then again, the Democrats will oppose whomever Bush nominates. He could nominate Teddy Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, or even Henry Reid and the Democrats would oppose them, simply because that's what they do.

They wouldn't filibuster Hillary. They gladly get rid of her so it opens the filed for themselves in 08. She is probably the only choice they won't filibuster though.

Ah, that's true. But then again, Hillary would likely refuse the nomination for that reason as well!

Mooresville Zoning
Tuesday evening the Mooresville Board of Commissioners refused to allow a man to build on his own property. Why? Because his plans did not "fit the adjoining neighborhood." Apparently the neighbors complained because the building he wanted to build would be too tall and would not look nice.
Hey idiots, if you don't want something built on a piece of land, YOU BUY THE DAMN LAND. It's not yours!
This building (which would have potentially brought in millions in tax dollars) was prevented from being built because someone else didn't like it's APPEARANCE -- not because it would emit noxious gases, not because it would impact traffic, not because the city couldn't run services to it, but ONLY because the neighbors didn't like it's outward appearance. The only reason there are supposed to be zoning laws is to prevent nuisances -- not appearances.
If I were the owner of the land who tried to build the hotel, my next move would be to start petitioning the town to condemn the land of all the homeowners who opposed him. All he'd have to do is get one of the oligarchy on his side and he could build his hotel on THEIR land, not his. What a screwed up country this has become.

and now we've got bureaucrats checking out satellite images to see if your house is different or if you've a pool so they can tax you higher...

Glad you like it!
And I just do not understand the mentality of people who do this. They actually believe they are using Democracy because all the people got together for a common goal. Unfortunately, that's like Rush Limbaugh's comparison of majority rule to 4 men and 1 woman sitting together and taking a "vote."

Exit Strategy
It seems the tables have turned to the other hand these days in politics. When Clinton got involved in various quagmires like Somalia, et al., it was the Republicans claiming he had no exit strategy (and he didn't -- he honestly planned to leave troops as long as the UN wanted them). However, as the shoe is on the other hand now, it's the Democrats who are whining about the "exit strategy" in the newly-freed-from-a-dictator Iraq.
Since there are also now allegedly "right-wing" media touring the area, we decided to have some of our "friends" in the military apply a few selected bugs to a few members of the "embedded" media to record some of the goings on. Here's a few transcripts, accurately recorded word-for-word, as transcribed by the fully trained team of typewriter monkeys:
File Transcript #069B...
"ooOoooH, Yes! Oh Akbar"
Whoops. Sorry. Wrong transcript. Let me get the other ones.
File Transcript #2144L
"Ok, ali-shek kanid, you paying attention? You stand behind me while I shoot the law rocket at the infidels...right behind me. Then my exit strategy is to run really fast back the way we came."
File Transcript #007C
"You, camera-boy infidel -- you stand over there and take picture. I stand over here and shoot gun at other infidels and you take picture of me. My gun, blessed be the 72 virgins, can shoot that infidel tank if I have faith. My exit strategy is to join the 72 virgins before tea time this afternoon."
File Transcript #L0053r
"Heysha. You fellahs over there. Hey! I'm a Knnnnnnidy, you know? Lemme tell ya bout exshet shrashetys. First thing, yoush gotta do is get ouddada car BEFORE it falls off the bridghe..."
Whoops. Sorry, I keep getting these transcripts mixed up...
File Transcript #871T
"You know, our Great Master Saddam had an exit strategy, too. It was go out through the opening in the top of his hole. That's pretty much all he had for his exit strategy, but clearly it worked! He got to go out his hole, didn't he?"
File Transcript #6962
"I hear tell that 'ol Great Satan, Jr., America's cursed black African President had an exit strategy, too -- but he couldn't find any tissues in the whole oval office for that darn dress..."
File Transcript #332Q
"Hey, you guys see what this paper says? Lemme read it to you: 'Exit Strategy #1: When America starts building up armies around, please ship this crate immediately to S.Hussein, 32 West Front Street, Damascus, Syria.' "
Well, there you have it. Actual transcripts of exit strategies currently in use, or already used...

Updated Ogre
Thanks, Pambie!
For those who hadn't noticed, the Ogre at the top of the page had some rough edges, and Pambie was so annoyed by it that she just had to take the time to smooth off his rough edges. Thanks so much!
I had put that on my list. Of course, the list was started on Monday morning after being nearly completely unplugged from everything computer-related for two entire weeks. I've almost finished cleaning out my various email boxes and now am starting work on the final moving parts with the new design. Heck, I even lost my evil Glennn quote in the redesign! Yikes!

Kenny Rogers Penalty
In this week's Homespun Blogger Symposium (XXVII), the question is:
Is the penalty imposed by Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig, appropriate for the infraction?
Please address the problem with professional athletes seemingly to think that they are above the law and untouchable when it comes to their on and off field conduct.
$50,000? For a Major League Baseball player? That's like $10 to you and I. That's not really a fine, any more than you and I are "fined" when paying a fee to park your car in a parking deck downtown.
20 games? That's pretty severe. For a pitcher, however, that's only about 4 games. Still, that's a heavy penalty. Heck, you can do drugs, get a DUI, or even participate in murdering someone and get less of a penalty (certainly in the NFL, anyway).
I've seen the video footage. The whole thing is crap. The reporters were idiots. The story about being "treated at the hospital" is only there for cash. Yes, I'm sure that the reporter will get paid large sums of money, and if he's not, he will sue for millions. If there were justice, Kenny Rogers could sue the rockheads for harassment.
Yes, I know public sports figures are held to different standards. The only reason Rogers should not have done this is because he WILL be sued for piles of cash. If the reporters weren't two feet away from him AFTER HE TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY, there wouldn't have been any trouble. I'm no celebrity, but if you're filming me from two feet away, I'm shoving your camera too.
The media does not have the right to harass anyone. The first amendment does not say that anyone can go anywhere for any reason and do anything in the name of free speech.
Unfortunately, today it is about money, as it always is. Anyone who has money (Rogers) will be a huge target for anyone who doesn't (reporters).
Assault? For shoving someone? Total B.S.

N.O.W. Emergency
Are there any of my good readers who are actually members of this impotent group called "N.O.W." That's the National Organization for ultra-liberal, amazonian, man-hating Women -- or so I've heard.
Their current mindless and shrill claim is that there is a national state of emergency because a female supreme court justice retired. They vowed that the retiring female would not be replaced by an extremist, and they are horribly worried that a Republican might "erode barriers." Of course, they ignore the fact that a very conservative Republican, Ronald Reagan, actually appointed the woman in the first place.
In addition, this group never once gives any example of a what "barriers" for "women's rights" an alleged extremist (like Sandra Day O'Connor) would replace. They even claim that we will "lose" a generation of young women if anyone other than their selected person is appointed.
Folks, this is what the Democrat party stands for. That's sexism, no matter how you interpret the word. If you support the Democrat party, this is the type of person you support. They ARE the mainstream of the Democrat power base. These people are the ones who tell the Democrat Senators what to do.
As for the upcoming appointment, there's not one single person that Bush could select that the Democrats would approve. I would even bet that they would oppose Bill Clinton if Bush nominated him, just to oppose Bush.

Did you fill out the form? In triplicate? And submit it to the appropriate authorities? Via registered and certified, return receipt mail?
I didn't think so.
