What's This?

Anyone have a clue? I'm submitting it to the Tarheel Tavern (hosted this week by Scrutiny Hooligans), because it grows wild here in North Carolina. I've seen a couple of them (in my yard), and they grow REALLY fast.

For scale, in case you can't tell by the window in the background, this thing grew leaves about three feet across in a period of 2-3 weeks. The stem is soft, so I'm sure it would be classified as some sort of "weed," but the HUGE leaves really makes them look kinda neat to me.

1 Looks like a catalpa tree to me. If it is, I would grow to be a huge tree. I'd pull it out if I were you.

2 A TREE? Growing this fast? The stalk is clearly very soft -- no bark at all.

3 Okay, maybe it's a type of sunflower. I just looked at the ones growing wild in my front yard, and they have similar leaves. But those are some big damn leaves.

I'd say, if it's not a sunflower, it's a Bean stalk...(you know, as in Jack.) As soon as you need a fish-eye lens, you know you're in trouble.

8 I dunno what they're called, but they try to take over my flower garden all summer, fortunately, the clover and crabgrass usually get the best of it.

9 I suppose it could be a sunflower-type plant, but as I recall most sunflower plants are simply tall and narrow -- this thing spreads out wide while it goes up.

Now I like the beanstalk idea -- it sure appears big enough to climb!
