No more hair left

Damn, it is hard to believe I worked all day on that damn template and still cannot figure out how to get the middle column to be the right size, or why it is stetching too far. Oh well, maybe I will just have to scrap the whole damn idea and just stick with what I have. At least I can stop pulling my hair out by the roots, because there is none of it left to pull now.

Title Poll Results

Well, after long nights counting and a couple of hanging chads to be examined (who here is from Florida?) the settled on title of my blog has been decided: "DFMoore: Your Daily Dose of Pizzazz" narrowly defeated "No relation to Michael". Since that's been my interim title anyway, I don't have to do any changes. Thanks for voting!

Test Blog ready for viewing

I got most of the stuff changed in the template that I wanted to change, and so far, everything seems to be hunky dory although the blogroll scripts was doing nasty stuff for a bit. Have a look and be sure freely leave any critique or whatever. http://tig.mu.nu/

Munuviana - a history in many parts

Early roots of the word Munu

‘Munu’ is one of those special words that was present in many different languages, but meant various things in each. For instance, the Aborigine munu meant ‘one with an ego as big as Ayers rock’. Similarly, in old Saxon, munu meant ‘calf’ – literally ‘cow just born’. Old germanic languages also contained the word munu, which meant ‘lets go west and kick some butt’. This word fell from common usage when the various peoples to the west began surrendering at the first sign of trouble, taking all the fun out of it. Curiously, the only place in oriental cultures where the word munu appears is in an ancient version of today’s Vietnamese language. Apparently munu and its numerous variations were used as village and town names, as well as the names of important physical features such as rivers, mountains and lakes. In each of these cases, the word munu always meant ‘right here’.

As for the specific roots of Munuviana as we use it, some scholars have posted brilliant analysis on the subject, but a recent theory suggests that somehow the name derives from a cartoon.

Further parts will be posted as people make things up further research the archives.

Wow, this is me and am I an idiot or what?

Hide your valuables, there is an idiot in the house.* It seems that things are not going too well on the test blogging. I do not have rebuild permissions, so I cannot make the changes to tell how things look. As it stands right now, somehow the template I pasted in is showing all that stupid crap I am trying to change, but the CSS file is not loading. I wish I actually knew what I was doing.

*Where, I don't see no idiot?

Stupid html question

What's the difference between <br> and <br />? I've just started noticing the 'br slash' version, and was wondering what it's for.

Pixy answers:*

The <br /> version is XHTML compliant, which means that it is also valid XML and can be parsed by XML parsers. There is a certain value to this, but I just dumped a plate of lasagne in my lap, so I have to go.

* It's good to be the Pixy.

Another Blond joke

A girl was visiting her blond friend who had acquired two new dogs, and
asked her what their names were.

The blonde responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was
named Timex.

Her friend said, "Whoever heard of someone naming dogs like that?"

"HelOOOooo," answered the blond. "They're watch dogs!"

My contribution

To "The Munuvian Cookbook." This is something I made up one night for me, my roommate, and a buddy of his from work, 'bout fifteen years ago, and it's still one of my favorite meals. The best interpretation of it was for my gf, and she liked it. I mean, she really, really liked it.

I'm pretty sure I served it with rice pilaf, fresh green beans, and beer (we were all guys) and Dave's bud said it was the best meal he ever had. Something told me it wasn't just lip service, either--maybe the way he took some extra bread to sop up the sauce....

Anyhoo, I call it Beef Tournedos in a Mustard-Cream sauce. Take a couple of beef tournedos, 2-3 oz each. Pan-fry them for a bit in some clarified butter to which you've added some cracked peppercorns. As an option, you can put in some diced onion to add extra flavor to the butter *before* you pan-fry the tournedos. Remove the tournedos to a warmed platter.

When I made it for my gf, I deglazed the pan with some cabernet sauvignon--probably from the Boordy vineyards in Maryland (my favorite vintner). The first time, I don't think I did, so deglazing the pan with wine is optional.

You will next add some heavy cream to the pan--heat that up, scraping off any crusty bits that may still be on the pan, and bringing it to just short of a boil. The cream will thicken by itself as water evaporates from the cream.

Swirl in a teaspoon or two of Dijon mustard (I prefer the Maille brand, but any good Dijon will do). Add a pinch of salt, swirl again, then pour the sauce over the tournedos.

No, I don't really know the quantities, and I'm really not as big as a food snob as I just made myself out to be.

Susie's neighborhood...

Some interesting things I have discovered in my wanderings around Munuvia...

Do you like Kitties? Go here! (thanks, Stevieray Daun)

Stevie also gives us a short bio for those of us (ok, me!) who've never read her blog.

Ted is pixilating Jennifer for Bill. (Guess you had to be there.)

Daniel posts one of my favorite Shakespeare passages.

Cherry has a picture that made me laugh out loud.

Snack time

If anyone wants some comfort snack food, try this:

1 cup salsa
8 oz cream cheese

Mix well. Refrigerate. Serve with chips.

It might sound suspect, but it is FABULOUS. Warning: addictive.

State of the Munion

I didn't set out to create Munuvia. Back in June, after setting myself up with Movable Type, I created a blog for Susie (then a Blogspotter) to play with. I think - the memories have blurred with the distance of time - I think I did this after Susie had a couple of particularly bad days with Blogspot. I made a new blog, and sent an email off to Susie saying, essentially, "If you'd like to play with Movable Type, here's a blog for you."

Three months ago today. (I know, it seems longer.)

Since then, our ranks have swelled with the admission of many fine new bloggers. We've had good times. We've had bad times. We've seen war and hardship. Our server actually crashed once.

When I set up the blog for Susie, I had two choices: I could create a whole new installation of Movable Type, or I could just click the button to create a new blog. The day I chose the easy way was the day Munuvia was created, for with everyone sharing a single instance of MT, Susie could follow the activity log and ping storm anyone who showed up.

And again, sharing one copy of MT let me set up Munuviana, which has grown over the past two weeks to become what it is today: our centre, our heart, our collective brain for when our individual brains don't want to work properly.

Where will we be in another three months time? I have no idea, really; I'm just making this up as I go along. But wherever we go, I hope that you will all go there with me. (Except for you, Collins, you slacker. Post something!)

So here's to you, Susie, loyal first citizen of Munuvia! (Even if you are an Ethel worshipper.) Long may you ping!

Email

Are people using the email function to get notified of trackbacks and comments on their blogs?

Are people getting those emails?

Just thought of this. My hosting provider was (possibly still is) blacklisted for spamming. If this is causing problems for anyone, I'll try to find a way to work around it.

I was reminded of this when I left a comment at The Patriette and received a bounce message from AOL - her comment thingy had tried to notify her and the email had been rejected.

I have medium-term plans to move mu.nu lock stock and fish-in-a-barrel to a new and better server at a new and better (better as in not blacklisted) host. When that happens, I'll be able to provide all sorts of shiny new goodies to the Munuvians (email accounts, for example), but it probably won't be for three or three or four months yet.
