Stupid is as stupid does
I finally got around to setting things up so that clicking links open in a new window... except it's always a small window that I have to maximize. Over at Mandarin Design they show how to automatically resize the window, but there has to be an easier way to make it open already full screen. Right?
Moo.

Along these lines, how do I set it so all links open in a new window?
Posted by: Daniel @ at September 23, 2003 09:52 PM

I don't know the official way to do it, but I've always done it by hand... after I open the little url button where you paste in the linking url, I add TARGET=_blank.
Like this:
Cheese
I hope that made sense.
If anyone knows of an easier way, I'd like to know it too.

Oh crap, let me try again... sheesh, forgot it will show up like that *grumblesillyoldwoman*
(a href="http://themonkeyboylovescheese.mu.nu/"TARGET=_blank) Cheese (/a)
Only, of course, with the pointy things instead of ( and )
Good grief, hope I got it right this time.
Must remember, preview is my friend.

Thanks LeeAnn, that's how I do it too. Cut & paste is my friend!
But that doesn't make the new window full screen. I was wondering what magic command I need to do that.

I thought about that Jennifer, but I couldn't find the way to automatically open browser windows maximized.
Some sites it works, some it doesn't... I'm stumped. I'll probably resort to actually getting an html book at the library. Imagine the shame... me, rtfm.

George, what could be the problem? MT Tech help needed!
OK, anyone know why I keep getting an invalid login when I try to log in to my MT console? I thought maybe I had gotten hacked, but I checked the gm-authors.cgi file through my ftp program and it still lists my user name and password as being the same as always, so why am I having a problem?

A minor question
Can someone- slowly and using short words- explain to me how to make something trackback? I don't know if it's something I need to do when I link to a particular article or if it's the originating article's thing to do.
Also, an explanation of the box down below where you create a new entry, labeled "urls to ping" and how to do it, I'd be appreciative.
Yes, I RTFM, but I'm too techno-arrested to fully comprehend.

Do you have automatic discovery turned on? (You should have - I think I turned it on when I set you up.)
If so, any link to a post on a trackbackable blog will be trackbackalised automagically.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at September 22, 2003 03:43 PM
2
As for the URLs to ping box, if you copy the URL from the Trackback link under a post into that box, it will ping that blog even though you may not have a link to it in your post.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at September 22, 2003 03:44 PM
3
Also, aren't there certain sites that you want to ping so they know when you update?
(let's see Pixy come up with some more new and exciting words - like "trackbackalised" and "automagically")

I be in command of dis ship!
You are The Cap'n!
Some men are born great, some achieve greatness and some slit the throats of any man that stands between them and the mantle of power. You never met a man you couldn't eviscerate. Not that mindless violence is the only avenue open to you - but why take an avenue when you have complete freeway access? You are the definitive Man of Action. You are James Bond in a blousy shirt and drawstring-fly pants. Your swash was buckled long ago and you have never been so sure of anything in your life as in your ability to bend everyone to your will. You will call anyone out and cut off their head if they show any sign of taking you on or backing down. You cannot be saddled with tedious underlings, but if one of your lieutenants shows an overly developed sense of ambition he may find more suitable accommodations in Davy Jones' locker. That is, of course, IF you notice him. You tend to be self absorbed - a weakness that may keep you from seeing enemies where they are and imagining them where they are not.

I am happily surprised I properly spelt "terminology", though.
Maybe I am the Capt'n of Spellage.

I keep hearing about the RSS feeds too, but haven't taken the time to do any research. I'm interested in the answer as well.
On the other hand, what's the little buttons for 'blogshares' and so on that I see on some sites?
Posted by: Ted @ at September 17, 2003 11:11 PM
2
Blogshares is a website that tells you what a "share" in your blog is worth.
Posted by: Jennifer @ at September 18, 2003 12:21 AM
3
Blogshares is like a stock market game--you buy and shares of peoples's blogs, the worth of which are determined by incoming and outgoing links.
I have no idea what RSS is.
Posted by: Susie @ at September 18, 2003 01:28 AM

Oooh...a new contest. Jeopardy blogging. You get the answer and have to guess the question!
Posted by: Stevie @ at September 18, 2003 05:50 AM
6
One thing you can do is change the number of words in the automatic excerpt setting in your Config page to, say, 1000. Unless you suddenly turn into Bill Whittle, that should do the trick.
You can also mess with your RSS templates. If you decide to try this, let me know how it turns out.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at September 18, 2003 09:54 AM
7
Figured it out!!!
Changing the excerpt length works, but here's another way. In your XML (or RDF - whichever you want to change) template you'll see a place with the tag $MTEntryExcerpt. Change this to $MTEntryBody. It won't include the extended part, but I'm not perfect, so my blog shouldn't be either. I added it to my site below the other feed.
