Stupid html question

What's the difference between <br> and <br />? I've just started noticing the 'br slash' version, and was wondering what it's for.

The <br /> version is XHTML compliant, which means that it is also valid XML and can be parsed by XML parsers. There is a certain value to this, but I just dumped a plate of lasagne in my lap, so I have to go.
