Thanks for the hand
I got a bit of comment spam awhile ago and was at an impass as I can't get to every MT console I need through my cable connection. For some reason, when I am on cable, it only recognizes the first one I sign into. So, whoever is responsible for it now being gone, I am muchly appreciative.

The update places only let you ping them once every while, so if you post a lot they get annoyed with you--like "Ping 'http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2' failed: Ping error: Thanks for the ping, however we can only accept one ping every half-hour. It's cool that you're updating so often, however, if I may be so bold as to offer some advice -- take a break, you'll enjoy life more" or they are on their lunch break--"Ping 'http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2' failed: HTTP error: 500 Can't connect to rpc.weblogs.com:80 (connect: Connection refused)"--it's not you, it's them....

I constantly get errors reported when I post. It's whatever it says at the top of the post page that says you can check the activity log, if ya wanna know why.
Well, I did that once and got a headache...lol.
So, now, like an annoying 'idiot light' on a dashboard that means nothing by being on 24/7, I ignore it.

Interesting Styling Problem
I'm having an... interesting... styling problem. Take a look at one of my individual entry pages - say, this one. It doesn't look very special, right? In fact, it is pretty ugly.
But the code that I am editing and then posting into the template looks great if I look at it on my own home computer. It looks like how I want it - with some nice styles and everything. I use IE both times and the styling is in the document - not on a separate style sheet. But, hey, what's happening? Don't say its an IE thing, because it does the same with FireFox.
Is it something when MT is converting all of those starting tags?
It's odd. And I'm a little confused.
NEVERMIND - I figured it out. Suffice to say, I'm an idiot. Now you can all just make fun of what I did. I'm still tweaking some though.

From the MT User's Manual:
Entry-Editing Shortcuts
If you are using Movable Type on Internet Explorer for Windows, you can make use of a couple of keyboard shortcuts while editing your entries, to automatically insert HTML formatting tags. To use these shortcuts, select the text you wish to format in your entry, then press the appropriate keyboard shortcut combination [or click the appropriate button in the button bar above the main posting area, IE only]:
* Bold - Ctrl-Shift-b
* Italic - Ctrl-Shift-i
* Underline - Ctrl-Shift-u
* Hyperlink - Ctrl-Shift-a

Just wondering
At work, a big part of my job is system optimization - making things run as quickly and as efficiently as possible (can't always have both at the same time). Sometimes it's necessary to tell the users that although something would be nice to have, it might be impractical.
The last post about time zones made me think of this. Pixy, when you do these magic fixes or patches, how much does it cost in terms of overall system speed? Are there certain kinds of magic that aren't worth the overhead?
I work on mainframes, so this PC stuff is pure curiousness to me.

A big part of my job has always been system optimization too, so I always test the performance of anything I put in place. The thingy I'm planning to do to fix the timezone problem exports the data from MT, runs a little Python program to sort and format it, and puts it in an include file for anyone to use. Once the data is out of MT, processing takes a few milliseconds.
That's why I've been so annoyed at the performance of blogging software (particularly MT, but other systems as well). This server can do well over 3 billion instructions per second, so if anything is slow it's because either (a) you're doing someting really really big or complex or (b) your code sucks.
As a rule of thumb, you can safely assume (b).

Miss Kitty Update
Bird Brain has been a bit disappointed at the lack of well wishers for Miss Kitty. I am not all that sure I want to wish her well myself, what with the times that she has come with an inch of taking my life, but still, she is a fellow creature and I am sure it is not all that fun at the Morris the Cat Clinic for Felines with Substance Abuse Problems.
As for myself, thanks to someone having left a very nice wheel of baby Swiss cheese unattended earlier today and having a few days of not worrying about having a cat breathing right on the back of my neck, I am feeling like I am on the top of the world. Bird Brain, Bill Bulldog and myself would love to have as many of you as possible come around for a visit every once in awhile. Of course, we also realize you all probably have a lot more important things than to keep up with what a Parrot, a Bulldog and a Mouse, and maybe our Miss Kitty, once she has kicked that catnip addiction, are up to on occasion.
A special message to Kang. A. Roo: Will you please stop emailing us to death asking if we will let you take Miss Kitty's place. We don't have room in our house for a kangaroo, and besides, our unnamed human benefactor is the one in charge of who or what gets to live here.

A couple of comments and a question
I was on Ms. Apropos blog and saw that her Munuvian list was showing updates and was ecstatic, thinking yeah! and then looked at mine and it was now showing updates. I examined her source to see if maybe there was a new code for the list showing updates that I had missed but found she just had a special blogroll listing for Munuvians. Oh well.
Miss Kitty is going into treatment for her catnip addiction problems and Bird Brain is asking that you flood the comments with well wishing messages for her.
Now to the question: Can anyone explain why updated posts from Beyond the Black Hole show up almost halfway down the listing on the Recent Post listing to the right even though they might have been posted only a couple of seconds ago? Give your answer in mouse speak, preferably.

As for the newly posted listing here on Munuviana -- if you'll click on the posts that are *perpetually* on top, you'll see that they are posted from the future. So, if I understand it correctly, until we reach that/those days, they will always remain on top. Mr Macklin: Just thinking out loud here... since there is a link on the sidebar pointing to your original script, would it be too much of a problem for you to update that particular post with these additions so when someone copies it over they have a complete list... or would it be better if the data was in the form of a javascript like the other blogrolls, so when there are updates to the main script, it updates everyone's links... or is that even possible... or should I just shut up and go away?

I have a question due to the pulldown list being a teeny bit wider than my sidebar: what code can I add to shrink the menu a wee bit? I don't want to widen my sidebar or shrink my blog body. Yes, it's picky, but what can you do? Works pretty well, though, so thanks.
Posted by: physics geek @ at April 21, 2004 09:11 PM

I think the width is driven by the site names. I haven't had much success forcing any formatting onto the text.
The only thing I haven't tried yet is adding formatting directly into each reference.
A simpler approach might be to do some editing of some of the longer site names until the width comes down to where you want it.

YourSQL
Hi-ho everybody!
I ran an experiment yesterday in which I converted the whole MuNu Movable Type database to MySQL to see if it would make a difference in performance.
It does. It makes a
big difference.
It seems to be three to five times faster for normal-type stuff, and
fourteen times faster in my super-killer stress test.
Now, obviously we want to convert to MySQL ASAP. Only problem is, the conversion program itself is abysmally slow - it took about eight hours to run. And any posts or comments made while it's running will be lost.
So, what I propose to do is this: Next weekend (which is a long weekend for me, fortuitously enough) I will turn off posting and commenting (with a nice friendly message) and convert everything. As soon as it's done, I'll turn everything back on, and you can all jump in and do whatever it is you do.
I'll post a more exact time closer to the day. One thing to be aware of - if you start writing a long post, and then I turn posting off, and then you click save, it will go bye-bye. So what I might do is copy the database and leave posting turned on; that way you can save your post but you will have to copy it manually to the new system (cut-and-paste).
Does any of this make sense to anyone?

Thingys & Doodads - II
In this edition of Thingys & Doodads, we'll look at the extended entry thingy and detail a javascript doodad to improve the blog interface, making your site more reader friendly.
Let's discuss the extended entry thingy. Since this post will be fairly lengthy, we can use it for an example. I'll do the main discussion points in the
# Entry Body and put the javascript and installation instructions in the
# Extended Entry
First, from the
Movable Type User Manual: ENTRIES
# Entry Body
# Extended Entry
Collectively these two fields make up the body of your entry. You can use the two fields however you like: you could split up your entry over the two fields, or you could completely ignore the Extended Entry text and enter only the Entry Body text. Movable Type allows you to split up your entry for more flexibility in the display of that entry; for example, if you write very long entries, you may not want your entire entry on your index pages. You can use the two fields to control what gets displayed, and where.
Note that when the text of your entry and extended entry fields are output into your public weblog, paragraphs--blocks of text separated by two line breaks--will be automatically converted using the Text Formatting option you have selected. The default formatting is to enclose paragraphs within <p> and </p>> tags, and to convert line breaks to <br /> tags. If you do not want this formatting to occur, you can select None for the text formatting.

worth mentioning that including content in your hidden extended entry will still contribute to your page load time. So if you're hiding a lot of content in there the browser will still have to download it.
Posted by: Rob @ at April 17, 2004 01:23 PM

True. The same applies to the view comments thingy. But you can have quite a bit of text in the page before it adds up to one medium-sized image.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at April 17, 2004 01:44 PM
5
I generally don't have but one or two long posts on my front page, and the extended entry content is text, not images, and they aren't Bill Whittle length posts, so wouldn't the load factor be minimal at worst?
Now, in the archives pages, where you have a boatload of posts loading, it would be a problem, but then it was a problem with the default templates because they loaded and displayed the extended entry text into the post. So the load times would be the same, but the show/hide thingy would make the page somewhat more managable.

Posted by: frinklin @ at April 17, 2004 02:39 AM

Edit the post--on the bottom is a date and time, just change it to whatever you want or what's correct, then publish again. Easy peasy!
Posted by: Susie @ at April 17, 2004 04:57 AM

But!!! Before you can change the time, you need to click on "customize the display of this page", put the radio button into the custom field, and then check the box that says editable authored on date! Then save, of course...You can check all of them if you want, or play with a few at a time, until your composition page looks like what you want it to (I like the preview and save buttons at the top of my posts for example, and I don't usually keep the extended entry box there, I turn it on as needed). Hope that's clearer!!

Susie: You are SO cool!!! I do the same thing with my [PREVIEW] / [SAVE] buttons so I don't have to scroll down the page just to punch them.
Pixy: I read somewhere, probably over at the MT Support Forum, that you can set the width of the entry boxes... I wonder if it would be possible to extend the boxes to where they will fill the screen in 800x600 resolution... and would that be a group thing since it is set in the configuration file or do each of the blogs have their own configuration files? Just wondering out loud...

MW - Yeah, that would be nice. I hate the poky little boxes! (Need an angry smily here - grrr!!!)
I'll take a look.

If I had my choice, the entry box and the sidebar together would = my full screen size, which is 800x600.

MAC OS X MT Tip
If you are using Safari for blogging - or for very much of anything you need to go to Unsanity and download their nifty little free Safari widgit.
As much as I am a fan of Apple and really love Safari, I can't for the life of me understand why they built in a 60 second timeout. The Unsanity widgit will fix that.

A call to arms!
Sir Robert of XSet has taken to the field to defend his honor and the precepts of humor. Those very same precepts that Munuviana itself was formed upon! Help the hamsters of justice defeat the evil forces of form letter spewing PR hacks. Stop by command central to pick up your orders and get a look at the other units in the field.
In other blogwar news, Michele of
A Small Victory (a friend of Munuviana for many an age) is raising forces to do battle against
Dastardly Dean the Munu Hater. Battle will be joined on Monday. The goal - raising the most support for
Spirit of America.
Let Michele know that she has the support of the hamsters of Munu. And maybe a cow puppy or two.
I did.

But Michele's never linked me, and Dean has. I think I'm even on his blogroll. And he's e-mailed me, which Michele never has.
I mean, I adore Michele's work, but surely this is a matter for the individual Munuvian to measure against his/her conscience, in the quiet of a morning, upon sober reflection--and with an eye to which tactic will get him/her more hits.

NO! Drat and double drat. Do you see now how nefariously subtle and deceptive the Dark One is? He seeks to distract us with his emails and blogrolls and his ability to substitute for citrus fruits.
Stand fast, Munus! Do not fall under the deadly sway of his honeyed voice.

Could it be happening? Shall Munuviana be riven to its core by strained allegiances? Can we not unleash hordes of violent hamsters just once upon a single target and then sit back with a sweet tea to watch it get skeletonized faster than a cow in pirranha infested waters?

Jim, Munuvia has a time-honoured tradition of being riven to its core by strained allegiances.
We are the centre of both the Axis of Naughty and the Alliance of Cheap Free Blogs!
We are home to one of two Frank Fanclub blogs (and are engaging in secret negotiations to acquire the other), and also to Frank-nemesis Jennifer!

MT ain't the only sheriff in town, it seems (but Blogger ain't never been the deputy)
Wow, Electric Venom abandoned MT for Word Press. Some of the feature of Word Press:
- Instant publishing with no rebuilding
- Full standards compliance
- Integrated blogrolling features
- Password-protected posts
- Dead simple upgrades and installation
- Dozens of styles and templates
- Multiple authors
- Multiple categories
- Sub-categories
- Semantic elegance
- Uses PHP and MySQL
Of course, a couple of these features are available with MT, but I like the password protected post idea, the integrated blogrolling, and publishing without rebuilding. I am not quite sure what is meant by semantic elegance, however. Maybe that means there will be automatic spell checking.
So Pixy, how is Minx coming along? Are we gonna be able to kick Word Press butt?

Minx is rolling along again now after some delays - expect updates soon.
BIG problem with Wordpress - it only supports a single blog. So we'd have to install 70 copies of it. And 70 MySQL databases. And the Recent Posts thing here on Munuviana wouldn't work. And so on.
When they say "instand publishing with no rebuilding" they really mean that it rebuilds every time someone loads your page, which means it's faster for you but slower for your readers.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at April 15, 2004 02:10 AM
2
But what about the password protection for certain posts?
Posted by: Mr Mouse @ at April 15, 2004 05:46 AM
3
Pixy: you dont' need 70 DBs. All you have to do is change the table prefix in the config file. You can install in as many folders as you want, as long as you are not sharing DB tables even if you are sharing one SQL DB only.
Also the page generation issues are not a problem. Most decent servers, and I reckon that munuviana's would be more than decent, would be able to handle it. Server load is free with your hosting; disc space is a big issue.
What's Minx?

OF Jay - joy. So I can have one MySQL database with 70 sets of tables in it? (Actually more like 90, and growing...)
Minx is the blogging system I'm writing. It's specifically designed for handling communities of bloggers. It's also very very fast. Only problem is that development has been stalled the past two months because I was tied up with other projects.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at April 15, 2004 07:33 AM

Mr Mouse - Minx will support private blogs, and user groups. Do you really need to make specific posts password-protected, rather than a blog?
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at April 15, 2004 07:35 AM
6
Oh, and server load ain't free - I'm paying for it! Now disk space, that's free. (I paid a $100 one-time fee for an extra 120GB drive in the MuNu server.)

On the subject of dynamic generation and server load: I loaded up a test version of Expression Engine, the new high-end system from the PMachine people. It takes half a second to generate a page. Which isn't much... Unless you have 200 blogs each averaging 1000 page-views a day.
(We currently have 70+ blogs, and mine, which isn't the most popular by a good margin, does average about 1000 page-views a day.)
So with 200 blogs, that's 200,000 pages, which takes 100,000 seconds... Which is about 27 hours.
Or I could install and maintain 70 copies of WordPress. I don't know how fast WordPress generates pages, but dynamic generation from an SQL database is a lot more CPU-intensive than serving up static pages - or even Minx's semi-static pages.

Too true. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the right tool, which is why I'm making one myself.

Pixy: You can do caching for the front pages of wordpress, most probly even for expression engine, using a simple cron job set to 1 minute each. The server I am sitting on hosts a plethora of wordpress blogs as well as the wordpress site itself, and together the server is estimated to handle more than insty's traffic in a day.
70 copies of wordpress sounds like a bunch, but there really isn't a load to maintain. In fact, there isn't almost anything to maintain in PHP myAdmin at all. It's there, and it sits pretty.
Depending on how many entries and queries you have for the front page, generation can take anywhere from a fifth of a second to half a second.
Posted by: OF Jay @ at April 15, 2004 05:11 PM
11
Jay: A cron job every minute? Updating 70+ blogs? Eek! And eww!
The database is probably not a problem, but wait until the next version of Wordpress comes out. I am not going to be interested in updating 70 installations of the software.
Now, those times of a fifth to half a second are interesting, because that's just the range I saw with Expression Engine. Minx updates faster than that on a new post, and produces pages far faster than that. Check out my blog for a Minxified MT blog - generation time is 5 to 7 milliseconds. (See the bottom of my right-hand sidebar. I've hacked MT to generate my pages the way Minx does.)
Page generation times of half a second are unsupportable. 70 independent software installations is unsupportable. And having to use cron jobs to overcome fundamental failings of the blogging tool is unsupportable.
I'm sure Wordpress is fine for a low-to-medium-volume blog - and for one which gets a lot of updates and/or comments, it's a better tool than Movable Type. But it's lousy if you want to run lots of blogs, and fatal if you run lots of blogs with lots of readers.
It's a good tool, from what I can tell. But for MuNu, it's a hacksaw, and we need a milling machine.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at April 15, 2004 06:12 PM
12
Gotcha on why you're working on Minx, and why MT in fact would work better for MuNu that WP would. Good luck with your project. Nice job on the render time too. :-D

Thingys & Doodads - I
Thingys & Doodads, aka javascripts and MT coding, are things that can make your blog more reader friendly.
One of the doodads I like to employ on my site is to list the blogs that link to a particular post under my
posted by line. I figger that if they link to my site, the least I can do is to make sure my reader can see who linked what from where without having to open the trackback window. Think about it for a second... how many times do you click through the trackback window to see who linked to a post... none???
Here is a sample of what the code produces:

In the extended entry, I have listed the code and given instructions as to where to insert it into your template. If you have any trouble installing it, let me know and I'll help you out.
