Possible Downtime
Hi all.
I'll be updating the forum software this weekend, and setting up a whole new front end for MuNu. I'll also be applying some server patches.
There may be some downtime for the blogs, but unless things blow up in my face it should be less than five minutes in all.

Come By and Participate in the Link Carnival
Over at Patriot Paradox the second ever Link Carnival is ready for your links.
Each Thursday I'll be making a post, linking to three of my favorite blogs, then asking you to do the same. Here are the rules:
1. Link to three blogs other then this one, and yourself.
2. If you see a blog already listed try to link to another blog other then that one.
3. If you can trackback to this post, which will help you because it will link back to you under this entry.
I'm hoping to see all Munuvians stopping by and linking away. Call it a comment party or what-not just stop by and link to your free favorite blogs, and be sure to link to the post. If successful it will be back next week!
Also each day I have a new
Daily Quiz question up, so be sure to visit and answer daily.

A strange question
OK, this might sound a bit weird, but there was some ecological message that went across the screen while I was at the theater this afternoon that said if we all unplugged our TV sets when we were not usin' 'em, the amount of 'lectricity we would save would be near the annual amount generated at Hoover Dam. My question is exactly why is my TV is still using 'lectricity after I switched it off? Jes' figgered with all the brain power floatin' 'round the Munu universe, surely one or two of ya'll could put the answer in simple enough words for me to understand.

If you have a recent TV, it will stay in standby mode so that the remote control will work to turn it on. That probably uses less than a watt of power, but there must be a couple of hundred million TVs in America, so it starts to add up.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at August 11, 2004 08:32 AM

Yeah, but it would seem that a mass of other appliances would use more electricity than a single TV on stand-by. There must be a bigger energy drain than less than one watt for someone to have actually created an ecological ad advising you to unplug it from the wall when not in use.

I also read that if we successfully removed all of the carbon-dioxide from the atmosphere we would reduce global temperatures by about 3 degrees. But it would matter because all of the plants would die due to lack a needed element of photosynthesis, and we would all be dead very shortly there after. It's one of those circle of life things.

Linda:
Do a view source code on your new entry/edit page.
In the head section will be some javascript code that runs the functions to turn your selections into bold, italics etc. Copy & paste that code into the head section of your comment templates.
In the body section, scroll down and locate the code that displays the buttons and their control functions. It will be right above the textarea for your copy. Copy & paste that code into your comment templates right after the code that displays Comments above the textarea box.
That combination of codes will not work in Mozilla, but does work fine in IE 6.0... not sure what other limitations there might be as far as browsers are concerned.
Good luck!

Stupid newbie question
Stupid question from a non-techie kind of guy.
When I post an entry to my blog, even if I get a successful ping to http://munuviana.mu.nu, my spanking new entry does not appear in the list of "new on MUNU" entries. I'm sure I'm overlooking something silly and would appreciate if anyone could give some assistance.
Thanks,

More on forgetful comments
I'd really like to help out with this issue, because I know it bugs a lot of Munuvians, and their visitors as well.
Since I didn't get any takers on my previous post about testing comment memory here, I've done some iterative testing on my own. I know very little about coding, and programming, but due to my own experiences, I have long suspected that there may be two factors at work in this problem. One is the actual code used, which as I say I know little about, and the other is how the browser is handling cookies.
As a result of my testing on MuNu, (and I can't make this claim for any other domain, as I have no way of testing), I can definitely say it is an end-user problem -- sort of. It's actually Internet Explorer that doesn't handle the code the way we want, although FireFox does.
I am running a completely standard installation of Firefox 0.9.2, and my comment info is successfully remembered on every blog on MuNu. (Except Rusty's, on which he has been playing with the cookies scripts) Conversely, no matter what cookies settings I use for Internet Explorer, it will not remember my user info on any MuNu blog. (Actually, I haven't tested every single one with IE... once through with FireFox took long enough!)
From what I can see, Internet Explorer chokes on the fact that the cookie is being set by blogs.mu.nu, but that it needs to read from the subdomain the user is on -- e.g. LightandDark.mu.nu -- so it fails. (In a single-blog installation, theses 2 addresses are the same.) So I think Rusty's on the right track for trying to find a fix for IE users via the var HOST variable.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about scripting to be able to help resolve the problem under Internet Explorer, but at least this explains why there is such a variation between users who have no problems with their comment info being remembered, and those who do.
So, for Internet Explorer users, I don't have a solution. But for Firefox, and I suspect, Mozilla users, if your user information is not being remembered in comments boxes at MuNu, it's gotta be because of the settings you're using in your browser.
Go to the
Tools menu and click on
Options. Then click on
Privacy on the left side of the
Options window. Click on the
+ beside
Cookies, and make sure there is a check mark in the box labeled
Enable Cookies. Be sure there is no check mark in the box labeled
for the originating web site only, and also make sure that the button for
accept cookies normally is turned on.
One other thing to note! There are actually two seperate places where comments can be left, and therefore 2 places where cookies need to be set in order for a blog's comments to remember a visitor.
The first is in the pop-up box that normally shows up when a user clicks on the comments link at the bottom of a post on the main page. If the user enters their information and selects yes for remember me, then, if using Firefox, they will be remembered for the next time. This arrangement allows a user who has had his comments remembered at one MuNu blog to be remembered at all MuNu blogs that use the popup comment window.
However - if the user then goes to a post's permalink page (daily archives), - this is where you'll be if you've followed a link to the post from another blog - that location requires a completely separate cookie to be set, so even though the user has been remembered in the comments pop-up box before, they will also need to re-enter their information in the permalink page's comments area in order to be remembered in that area on future visits as well.
A few people have set up their configurations so that clicking on the comments link on the main page takes you to the comment section of that post's individual archives page instead. (for antispam reasons) This type of comment section is the same one described in the preceeding paragraph, so will not remember users who have their information remembered at other blogs. The user will have to enter their information at that specific blog in order to be remembered the next time.
Emma's site is an example of this kind of setup. (Yes, Emma, it's your specific "session only" setting that's not allowing your info to be remembered when you re-visit a blog).
I know there's a lot of jargon here, so if you need a better explanation of anything, ask away in comments. I'll keep looking for an IE solution too, but the MuNu programming/coding gurus are a lot more likely to come up with something useful.
Also, I'd really like to know whether other Firefox users are having their comment info remembered please?

The strange thing for me is that my info is remembered at all non-munu blog, but not at any munu blogs EXCEPT munuviana.mu.nu. Could that a clue to anything?
I had assumed, btw, that it's an IE issue because my info was remembered everywhere in IE before I reformatted and reinstalled Windows 98 a few weeks ago.
But, Pixy, have you done anything to the server during June through early July that may have affected the way IE interacts with munu? Since it's IE users that suddenly are having the problem, it might be a server setting somewhere...??

I'm using Mozilla and, since the re-install I've had to use "form manager" to fill in the first time I've commented someplace since then, but as long as I check "remember me" I don't have to fill out my info again. One thing I DID note, however--until I commented in a pop-up comment box on my own blog and told it to remember me, the pop-up boxes weren't remembering me across munu, so I suspect that if your blog doesn't have the pop up box, you're NOT going to be remembered everywhere ahead of time....

Thanks for your explanation (and being a handsome devil, too) Paul!

Em

Susie, you've hit it bang on. The pop-up box and the archive page are completely unrelated to each other as far as being remembered is concerned.
As for the inconsistencies people are still experiencing... wow. i really thought I'd at least narrowed it down, but I guess not! Just out of curiosity though, is anybody that's using the current version of FireFox with the settings I mention in the post NOT having their comments remembered on MuNu?
What we need to find is one configuration that is working for all who use it, then we can try to backtrack from there.
Lemme know?

Why is my computer yelling at me?
First, showing how dumb I can be, I didn't realize that I wouldn't have to ping a munuvian. Duh! Why all the pings when you post my dear! Okay, so I finally got that bit through my thick head.
But this last time I posted, linking to Auterific and Snooze button, I got this message:
2004.08.08 21:41:55 80.178.121.136 'Rachel Ann' added entry #40354

Sniff, sniff. I wanted both Linda and Jim pinged. I know Linda got pinged, but I'm not sure Jim did. If "they only accept one ping every half-hour, how do I ping more than one munuvian?

Rachel-Ann
The ping errors you are seeing are for pings that update the 'metablog' sites. These are sites that keep an ongoing, real-time list of recently updated blogs. (They don't show any content, just a list of blogs that have recently updated.) These pings don't have anything to do with the ones that trackback your post to someone else's.
They often (usually) give errors, probably because they are considering all MuNu bloggers to be coming from the same domain and only allow 1 ping every 1/2 hour (and the chances of 'somebody' here not already having posted within any 1/2 hour period are pretty slim.)
That said, the safest way to check is to actually go to the person's post you're linking to check for your trackback, as often you can get time-out errors even though the ping has gone through successfully.
As an aside, the delay while trying to ping some of the metablog sites can really slow down your posting. If you want, you can just turn them off - not a bad idea since they often don't get through anyway. To turn them off, go to your blog's MT administrative page, click on the Weblog Config button on the left side, then click on the Publicity/RemoteInterfaces/Trackback link. Once there, you'll see the checkboxes for blo.gs and weblogs.com. Just uncheck the boxes. This will have no effect on the process of sending trackback pings to other blogs to which you link.
While you are there, you'll want to make sure there is an entry added into the Others box for Blogrolling. By including that site in your pings, people who have you in their Blogroll-powered lists can get a notification each time your blog is updated. Enter the following code in the box, if it's not already there:
http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/
Once you've made your changes, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save. Once the page has refreshed, you'll see a sentence in green text near the top of the page saying Your blog preferences have been saved. REBUILD to see those changes reflected on your public site.
By clicking on the word REBUILD, a small popup window will appear. In that window, use the dropdown list to select Rebuild Indexes Only, then click the Rebuild button. That will make put your changes into effect.

Um, that's bad. Unless you mean just now, when our hosting provider was
doing a network upgrade. If it's still happening, give me any details
and I'll see if I can fix it.
Oh, one note: You may have to delete any old mu.nu cookies. The server
will be either mu.nu or .mu.nu. This is easy in Mozilla or Firefox,
harder in IE. It's easy to delete all cookies in IE, not so easy to
delete just some of them.

Comment Remember Info Problem
Ok, so it's official. This is not a user end problem. I have been surfing the MT forum for help and I have some scripts to fix the problem. I'm going to continue to tweak my comment template and then I'll post the solution in the comments section of this post. Help is on the way!!!

Mr Rusty:
If you check Remember Me, it should set the cookie to remember and not erase the cookie... or should my linear thinking be circular?

Hypothetically. That's why this is 'bug'. When I replaced the 'head' and 'body' templates with some script I found from someone else w/ the prob--who claimed that was the reason for the problem-it was fixed immediately.

Ok, one problem solved--one problem found!!!!!
So, now it remembers me after I post. But if I close the window, then reopen it, my info disappears. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!
This is a common problem over on the MT forum. Literally hundreds of people posting on it.
Perhaps the most common solution has to do with changing the var HOST field to the toplevel domain name. But that didn't work, apparently because our MT is installed somewhere else.
This is really irritating!! Madfish Willie, do you think you could take a look at my blog and see what you come up with?

This seems to happen to me while using one of my five computers on board my ship. I was going a different route and checking all the preference settings in IE with no luck. I even zapped the crap out of that computer with my ray gun and that didn't help.

When your info disappears, does it re-appear again if you click the Yes button?
Can you e-mail me the new code you used - I can compare it to the original code and see what is different that way.
I am humbled that you would defer to me in this situation, but Pixy and Rob are really the ones best able to solve this problem. I'm just good at sniffing out open-source code and modifying it enough to use for myself. I understand enough about everything to be dangerous because I'll try to change stuff and it ends up all butchered.

Erm maybe this will sound snitty but Munuvia is running a version of MT that is about .2 versions behind the latest release of MT2 (not MT3 - the latest is MT2.661) Maybe that would help?

I always thought it was my browser settings that was "resetting" the cookie code (I have cookies flushed when I exit the browser).
Could that be it -- or am I waaaay off base?
Posted by: Emma @ at August 06, 2004 09:38 PM

I have 2.661 too. I don't know of any changes that would affect this, though. The main thing was comment throttling which MT Blacklist largely removes the need for.
And we're only 0.021 versions behind, anyway
We'll probably be upgrading to MT3 once the general release comes out. (Now that they've got their heads on straight re pricing.)

Rusty:
The default setting you refer to in the post only determines which of the 2 radio buttons will be selected when a user first comes to a comment page.
That's the polite way, so that an unsuspecting user won't get a cookie unless they specifically approve the action by changing the selection to yes. (Opt-in, as opposed to opt-out)
Changing that selection to yes 'should' change the behaviour of the script to place a cookie.
I've been doing a bunch of iterative testing, and will post the results in a new post in a few minutes.

Come By and Participate in Free Link Thursday
Over at Patriot Paradox I have a new event starting called Free Link Thursday. Here's a description:

Hotmail Link Decrapulator
Teresa over at Technicalities posted today about her dislike of the way her Hotmail e-mail account handles embedded links - you click thge link, and a new Hotmail window opens with the link in a "frame". I hate that kinda crap too.
Several months ago, I found a neat little utility at SlayerOffice that decrapulates the link and treats it like a regular link in a regular web page. It installs as a favelet on your toolbar. All you do is click the decrapulator favelet and then click the link.
So, to all you with Hotmail accounts, go to
OfficeSlayer's Hotmail Link Decrapulator Favelet, and download the little app, and improve your
Hotmail Experience!

Another neat Hotmail tool is the Hotmail Popper which lets you access your hotmail with your regular email program.
It's less than perfect, it bogs down sometimes and doesn't always get mail which I'd read from the web page while at work (even if reset to unread), but it lets me keep all my correspondance on my own hard drive.

Does anybody know of an applet, script, etc that would export a contact list from one Hotmail account and let you import it into a different Hotmail account?

I understand that if you are using hotmail and zap the crap out of the message with your ray gun, it behaves much better.

Yes.
You'll have to change your name.
This only happens to people with names beginning in D or P.
Um, or if you enter your blog's URL in your profile page in MT, that will also fix it.
Or I could fix the templates on Munuviana so they don't try to process smilies embedded in Mailto URLs.

A 'Forgetful Comments' possibility
I've been doing some thinking about why some Munuvians and visitors get remembered & some don't. The one variable that I thought was worth checking is whether some folks have their browser's cookie permissions set differently with regard to storing cookies across domains (since MuNu uses so many subdomains)
Would folks who uses Firefox, and who have problems being remembered, please do the following, and report back in comments:
In the browser, got to

For the originating wesite only is checked? And if it is, uncheck it, close and reopen your browser and retest the

I think that anyone with access to the blog.mu.nu blacklist console can delete spam comments on any site if they can find a URL or IP number to search. I also find that zapping the crap out of the comment spammers themselves with a fully powered ray gun usualy nips their offensive behavior in the bud.

Like a phoenix, rising from the ashes
Recent immigrants to Munuviana may not realize that we have our own space program. Air Munuviana was our first rocket, flying fast and high until an electronics failure caused a catastrophic disassembly into component pieces (translation: she was recovered in several handfuls of tiny little bits).
But to any true rocketeer, the loss of a rocket is just an excuse to build another one, so I've been gathering supplies to do just that. This weekend I picked up the airframe tubes and a brand new altimeter, so all that's needed now is a little construction time.
As Victor would say, nameless rockets have bad juju, so I've already decided on one. In honor of Mu.Nu, or new moo, or something like that, the obvious choice is:
The Cow Puppy
Any artists out there wanna do a logo? As before, all Munuvians will be listed on the rocket and much commenting upon will be made. I won't promise traffic spikes, but several rocketeer friends mentioned that they visited some of us after seeing the
Air Munuviana.
She'll probably be a little shorter, but the airframe is a slightly larger diameter. The design allows for both solid fuel motors as well as the nitrous-hybrid motors.
Maiden launch is scheduled for September. Pictures to come.

Remembering Info in Comments
For some reason my blog doesn't remember user info for frequent commenters (me--which is annoying). Even when "Yes" is chosen and cookies are enabled. Any suggestions?
Also, I notice that when my comments page opens up, frequently the text is blank until I scroll up and down a few times. Possibly a problem on my end, but maybe others have experienced this.
UPDATE: Most of the comments tended to think this was a user-end problem. I don't. The reason is that the problem persists across a number of internet surfing platforms. For instance, it doesn't seem to matter wheter one is using IE, Netscape, or Mozilla. I'm thinking that there is a problem in our comments template with whatever code sends cookies since it seems to affect so many of us.

The whitespace instead of text has to do with specifying a background color instead of "clear" for one of the div elements. Sorry I don't remember which one. Anybody?

Rusty, I know that Jim was having all kinds of problems on my comments under IE - but when I posted on my site to see if anyone else had a problem, I didn't get any response at all. So I still don't know why there is a problem with some IE browsers, but not others (my IE browser resolves the comment box just fine...) *sigh*
Some sites I do have problems with the blog retaining my info, others there is no problem. I haven't figured that one out either. I use Firefox for browsing now, most of the time.

Yeah, that's a fake. eBay will never send you a complex url like that. Their policy is to direct you verbally where you need to go from their main page.

Oh yeah, it's a fake.
You can tell by right-clicking on the link, looking at 'Properties', and you'll see that even though the link looks like it goes to eBay, it actually goes to another site - probably in Asia.
And if you're really curious, click on the link and it'll take you to a page that looks exactly like eBay.

Yeah, this is called Phishing. If you ever receive an email from anyplace you do business. Never click the link (unless you just want to go see what phisher site looks like) - use your own bookmark to go to the real site and email the people at the business to see if they know about this type of email going around.
Sometimes they will want you to forward them a copy of the offending email - other times they'll just say "no it wasn't us, don't listen to them".
