Trackbacks to site not working
I posted an entry on my site which linked to this one over at Moxie.
No trackback listed, though her sidebar lists my site as being recently updated. This is common when linking to her. Any idea why she doesn't see my trackbacks?

Sometimes when I ping Pixy it doesn't show that there's a trackback on his main page, but if I click the trackback link it's listed. Don't ask me why, it's all geek to me....

Here's what I do - I open a new browser window and see if the trackback shows up on the post. If it doesn't, I do a manual trackback and save the post again. If the trackback doesn't take that time, then it might be a problem with the other site. I have to do the manual trackbacks for blogspot cause it doesn't do automatic.

Apologies
As you may know, all of Munuvania is currently being censored by the South Korean government (check out Big Hominid for the latest on government censorship - he also got tagged in a Newsweek article). It just dawned on me that the ban on the mu.nu domain is probably a direct result of my posting the video of the South Korean hostage being beheaded.
As someone who's a brand new arrival in mu.nu, I feel like quite the ass for getting all of all y'all banned in an entire country.
So please accept my abject apologies for this turn of events.

No worries! Their loss, anyway.
I wonder if they filter by domain or by IP? Cause I've got lots of each. Good old munu.net...

From what I understand they filter by domain - they follow China's methods of firewalling. The Korean bloggers are getting used to using proxy servers instead.

Pixy/Madfish:
I've seen a few places mention some MT plugin that allows you to close off comments after a certain amount of time. Given 99% of the spam that beats the Blacklist comes from old comments, is it possible to install this in the Central Munu Computer DooHickey?

If you are running a php enabled site (that means your index file extension is php) you can use this php script from Geekblog.
Alternatively, there is some javascript code on this discussion at the MT Support Forum.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at July 28, 2004 04:47 PM

There are five variables that you have to set before this script will work...
// $database is the name of your movable type database
$database = '';
// $dbuser is the username used to access this database
$dbuser = '';
// $dbpass is the password used to access this database
$dbpass = '';
// $dbhost is the hostname to connect to - most likely this will stay as localhost
$dbhost = 'localhost';
// If you changed the name of the movable type 'entry' table, change this value to reflect the name of it
$entrytblname = 'mt_entry';
Pixy will have to direct us with some of these...

The same way you upload images via the [UPLOAD FILES] function... or you can use the FileManager in your cPanel to upload files...

Yikes!
Are you using MT Blacklist to block them?
If there's a common URL or IP address we can use MT Blacklist to automatically remove them, rebuild your blog, and ban them in the future.

Well, this has happened before and I had to individually click each address and then banned and deleted them. There was only one comment, but when I clicked to MT Blacklist it, about 2000 appeared (same as before).

You have to go into MT Blacklist: http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-blacklist.cgi. You can also get there by clicking on the link in the comment email that says "De-spam using MT Blacklist".
If all the spam came from the same IP address, or refers to the same web site, MT Blacklist will zap it for you using the De-Spam function.

All MuNu blogs can be protected under the Blacklist umbrella. They've got to be turned on individually though. Log into MT and go to http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-blacklist.cgi?__mode=config. You'll be able to turn on/off Blacklist for each blog that you have permissions for.

MU.NU Banned in Korea
No, this is not a joke. I wish it were.
The government of South Korea took humbrage at the many links to video of Kim Sun-il being beheaded (disclosure note:
I was one back in my blahsplat days). In order to 'protect the family' of the victim, they took the drastic step of blocking all internet access, by browsers in Korea, to any DOMAIN with any links to the video. So, all URL's that end in blogspot.com are blocked. Browsers in Korea have been using proxies to view blogs they like, but that's a pain.
A friend of mine in Korea,
Kevin (aka, Big Hominid), e-mailed me yesterday and told me that he couldn't see some pics on my site because he had to view it through a proxy as well. When I told him about my move to mu.nu this is what he wrote:
Damn, then you're banned here, along with the rest of your unruly tribe [ie, munivians]. You just can't win against the g*dd*mn Korean government.
Apparently, any one with an mu.nu extension is also banned.
Are there any munivians in Korea that can confirm this?

Crikey, that sucks. What's wrong with that government?! Can you imagine the U.S. govt banning all domains that have any site linking to the Nick Berg beheading in order to "spare the famnily"?!! If the family doesn't want to watch then they wont watch it!!!! This is out-frickin'-rageous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, I'm calm again. Mainly 'cause I don't know anyone in South Korea. But still....

I'm not in Korea but I can vouch that it's true. I've been on this for a while. There's no likely end in sight either...they've gotta use proxy servers like unipeak to get around it.
There's a piece in Newsweek about it; otherwise look at my Asia by Blog pieces (just search on my site) and you'll find plenty about it all. Help get the word out!

If you replace the @ sign with @ it should help prevent spambots from harvesting your e-mail address. I have no idea if this method works or not.
Alternatively, it looks as if this would work better. It takes your e-mail address and generates a javascript code that will display your desired screen output.

Interesting, Madfish. But I'll bet the spam bots are well aware of it by now and are looking for that code as well. If not, they will be soon!
Helen, I'd just do like a lot of careful bloggers have done and spell it out as:

...or whatever the address is. Anyone who wants to email you will know what to do.

Interesting idea, Madfish. How would you suggest doing that?
Posted by: RP @ at July 28, 2004 03:12 PM

Open an image editing program... I beleive even MS Paint would be OK, but I've never really used it... your new image would be no wider than your column... your backgroound color would probably be the same color as the background of the column... then use the text tool to add your e-mail address using whatever font and color you like... save the image file... upload that file to your site via the [File Upload] button as an embedded image... copy & paste the code into your template(s) in the appropriate location... [SAVE] and [REBUILD]... that should do the trick.

Baseball Been Berry Berry Good To Me!

How many hits can you get in a half-inning without scoring a run?

I'm gonna say 6.
The bases are loaded by 3 consecutive shallow line-drive hits. The runner on first gets picked off for the 1st out, then the batter gets an infield hit. That runner then gets picked off at 1st for the 2nd out. The next batter gets an infield hit - the 5th hit of the inning - and loads the bases with 2 outs. The next batter hits a line-drive base hit to left and reaches 1st easily, but the runner on second is gunned down at 3rd before the runner from third can cross home plate. 6 hits, no runs.
Posted by: Tuning Spork @ at July 27, 2004 01:58 AM
2
Or we can just say that the runner on 3rd was Sid Fernandez and was gunned down at home!
Posted by: Tuning Spork @ at July 27, 2004 02:00 AM
3
You answer is correct, however, I find your analysis flawed...
After your bases are loaded... runner is picked off first... then batter gets an infield hit... certainly that would score a runner from third more times than not...
That was way too fast... here's how I read it on ESPN earlier today:
1. Single - thrown out trying to steal second base. One away.
2. Single - thrown out trying to steal second base. Two away.
3. Single - man on first.
4. Infield Single - hold runner at second base - men on first and second.
5. Infield Single - hold lead runner at third base - men on first, second, and third.
6. Single - ball hits runner, runner is out and batter is credited with a single. Three away!
Six hits and no runs!!!
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at July 27, 2004 02:10 AM
4
Well, that's a different way of getting there, but I don't see that my scenario is flawed.
An infield hit would likely be a hard ball to play and the runner on third would be careful about getting too far from base before committing to home -- likewise for the runner on second -- and they'd likely both hold their base on that hit just so's they don't make an easier target.
It's not really how it's done so much as that it's just mathematically impossible to add up 3 bases and 3 outs and get more than 6 hits. There are gonna be several of ways of getting there.

Actually the answer is 12. Say the first team does the above in the final 5 minutes of the first 15 minutes of an inning. The second team does the same thing in 5 minutes. All the action has occured within the last half (10 minutes) of the 20 minute inning.

Blogrolling & Liberals
First, liberals: I have been wanting to post something about this for a while, and based on a recent post, I’m kind of excited to do so now.
I went through all of the mu.nu blogs recently only to realize that I was likely the only democrat/liberal (those two are not always connected, but I’m using them that way for the sake of argument). Then, I saw this comment on
this post:
Wait a minute. I thought *I* was the token liberal.
Posted by: Jennifer at July 22, 2004 07:49 PM
I’ve always been curious how many of us there were, if any. Honestly, like Jen, I thought I was the only one. I don’t want to stir up a political debate, but I am curious if anyone else here leans left…you know, voting for Kerry/Edwards?
*ducking*
On to the Blogrolling thing: I would have posted a question asking if anyone had the OPML code to import to Blogrolling, but I’ve actually enjoyed perusing the Munuvian sites. I’m switching the mu.nu roll over to Blogrolling so that recently updated sites can be flagged. I really like that feature with Blogrolling and find it to be useful so that I’m not visiting sites that haven’t been updated in a few days. I’m not quite done adding everyone (my, there are a lot of you), but I think it’s going to work out really well to showcase blogs that update frequently. I think I can share the OPML if anyone has Blogrolling Gold and wants to import the code into their own blogroll.
The only issue I’m going to have with this is that I won’t know who the new Munuvians are. Other than adding them to the mu.nu blogroll and their occasional hello here, is there any way to know when they come on board? I’m fairly new here, so don’t shoot me if this seems like a stupid question.
I think that’s about it for now. Hope you’re all doing well.

Paper doing blogging story
I just got an e-mail from the paper in Harrisburg, and they are going to do a story on blogging.
They asked if they can feature me in their story. I said yes, but I guess people are going to find out about me. I wonder how people like my boss will react if they read my stuff.
I guess we'll see.

Tom,
This is your opportunity to be the "Deep Throat" of the blog world. You can be the anonymous source of all things blog related.
Since I've read several stories of people getting canned because of their blog, www.dooce.com being one of them, I'd be careful of letting the world know who you are.

My husband is applying to residencies both in Harrisburg and Lancaster. Though, the one in Harrisburg is not as high on the list as some others, particularly the ones in Ohio. It would be kinda cool to be near another mu.nu blogger. Though, I am one of those liberal communists. Not sure you'd want to meet up with me for a beer or anything.
(actually, I'm just a bit left of center, really)
You know...we should do one of those Bravenet Location Maps that show where all of us are. I know I would like to see that.

Dooce is Heather Armstrong...she was fired a couple of years ago for posting about her work, although she did it with the knowledge of her supervisors and they discussed how they would be portrayed on the site. She lives in Salt Lake City now with her husband and new baby, and has an incredible blog. Check her out if you haven't already. You can link to her from me...

Application went out today for the residency in Lancaster. We should be visiting that area, perhaps even a couple of times, in the next few months. Let me know if you'd like to meet up, Tom and I'll see if our unforgiving interview schedule will allow for such a thing.

I finished moving all the archives over for Both Hands today (tried to save you some work, Pixy). You're all welcome to come visit!
I love the MT style--so clean and pretty, and I love my template, except for one thing...the archives are not so nice. If anyone can give me some help tweaking my master archive index so it looks like my main index, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sara Sara
I was reminded of this drinking song that any woman named Sarah will no doubt be annoyed if you point it out. We used to sing this at The Phyrst, in State College.
"Sarah, Sarah, sitting in a Chevrolet. All day long she sits and shifts. All day long she shifts and sits. Sara, Sara, sitting in a Chevrolet."
"Sarah, Sarah, sipping on a bottle of Schlitz. All day long she sips her Schlitz. All day long her Schlitz she sips. Sara, Sara, sipping on a bottle of Schlitz."
"Sarah, Sarah, working in a sheet slitting plant. All day long she slits those sheets. All day long those sheets she slits. Sarah, Sarah, working in a sheet slitting plant."

Blogger Bowl 2004?
UPDATE: Make that an autodraft. A lot of emails telling me live draft is too much so, I am all if not flexible!
Every year for the past 4 or 5 years I have played Yahoo Fantasy Football with friends from work, and some online. This year is no exception, except this year I am hoping to perhaps call out a few bloggers for some fun and competition. I am hoping to get a league together with a maximum of 10 teams, and no less then 8 teams. I've found this size of a league to be most fun, and playable.
To join is simple:
Go here and use the following to join the league. You will need a Yahoo ID to join, by the way:
League ID# is 171767
Password is paradox
For the team name please use your blog name and be sure to leave a message
on my blog or on the message board there to confirm you joined. Commenters to this blog are welcome too, just be sure to let me know.
So far we have 3 teams, and are looking to have a autodraft to pick teams. If you have any questions let me know.

i would love to join, but it depends on when the live draft is held. You see, Yahoo! games is blocked on my computer at work, so i can't participate if the draft is held during work hours.

The draft will hopefully be held at night most likely. If you are unable to attend the draft you can pre-rank your players and the computer will automatically pick them for you.

I'd like to join as well, but a live draft is just more time and effort than I can put forth right now. Good luck and have fun, and be ready for (hopefully) the upcoming fantasy hockey season!

Help Wanted
I need help. I've been trying to upload a movie to my site. I was getting file too big errors so i set out to make a smaller version of the file. then I got one small enough to upload and not look like complete crap and it wont play. This is my first ever Flash effort and although I figured out the basics of how to do what I want, getting it out for the rest of you to laugh at and ridicule see is proving a challenge. Did I mention I don't have manuals and the online help really sucks?
Anyway, here is the link for the file I was able to upload.
download file
In the mean time, I'll keep trying.
UPDATE: Nick was kind enough to grant me temporary access to load the bigger file onto a server of his. He also helped me to figure out how to FTP to my site on our server. The problem is two people have already commented that they cannot play the .mov file so I FTP's a few other formats to nomayo.mu.nu. I can see the files, and even download them, the problem is, I don't seem to be able to link to them. Here's the html I think should work but doesn't:
<a href="http://nomayo.mu.nu//waffle.avi">link</a>
Is it me? or is the whole internet confused?
