MT Turns 3... And A Bit
Movable Type 3.1 - the general release - will be released on August 31. I'm planning to buy an unlimited non-commercial license and install it.
I haven't worked out yet exactly how we're going to manage the transition. I need to play with it a bit first to see how compatible it is. I'll set up a test environment so that people can try out their own templates and see whether it works. Once we've done that we'll see how we want to organise the move.
At least it's not going to cost $4000 to upgrade:
Do I qualify as a "Personal User?"
If you're an individual whose blogs don't support a commercial endeavor, you can use the Personal Use license. (Incidental revenue such as Google AdSense, Amazon Associates fees, PayPal tip jars, or other similar programs which aren't the main purpose of the site are allowed under the personal license.)

And MT 3.1 has more, um, thingies. Yep, thingies. Definitely.
(Apparently the new MT Blacklist for MT 3 is very nifty.)

And, on MT 3.1, you don't have to turn off your Norton Personal Firewall to post like you do on 2.6-whatever.
(sorry, that just always bugs me)
Of course, waiting for the tip jar...

It's so good at blocking ads and at all the other fun personal firewall stuff. I don't know why it has a problem with MT 2, but you can't do any rebuilding if it is enabled. I thought all of that stuff was server-side, so it's just weird...

erm, well there is loads of templately goodness that needs to be massaged to get mt2.6 templates to play nice with v3. Aside from that*, the upgrade is pretty damn easy...
*ie having to edit every single template by hand!

Theoretical MT Question
So, what happens when the number of posts on Mu.nu get to the one right after 99999? I mean, based on trackback links, the storage number of posts is only a five digit number. So what happens when we need that sixth number? Do old posts just get rewritten or something?
(I'm sure this isn't pressing (we're only at 42XXX) but it may come up and I'm somewhat curious...)

Site Stats Stifled
Hi all.
The server has been complaining about being overloaded, so as a temporary measure I've disabled the web stats programs except for Awstats (which I think is the best one anyway), since they were the only thing I could find that seemed to be putting a significant load on the machine.
I've also tweaked Awstats so that it only updates every two days rather than every day. If you need right-up-to-the-minute figures, you can update it manually. Just click on the link at the top of the Awstats page; it takes a minute or so to rebuild.

Oh, Of Course
I was wondering why Frinklin had sent me an email with the subject "^_^ mew-mew (-:" and a zip file attached. The contents of the message didn't make much sense, and I hadn't had time to check the attachment.
But just now I got a message from BRD with the subject "Re: Mail Server" and a zip file attached.
Someone's got a virus. It's probably not Frinklin or BRD; the one from BRD was recognised by SpamAssassin as coming from a forged address, but I don't have much else to work on. Whoever it is, though, has all three of us in their address book, so it's likely to be a Munuvian.

If you look at the full headers (available in hotmail and yahoo) or check the options, right click on the email through most other programs, you should be able to see the source IP address. See where that gets you, if you haven't already tried.

I've got 4 email addresses - get virii and spam mostly on my yahoo account - which is the one I use for the most part in posting on blogs - although now that I have my own blog - my address isn't as easily harvested.
Luckily yahoo's spam filter is pretty good and catches most of it. But the best one I've seen yet is the one that had my own return address on it. Yep - the wankers didn't even check to see if the send and receive addy's were the same! Sheesh.
Anyhow, I think total in a day I get about 25 spam and virus emails - as I tell my husband - just delete them. Unless there is an unusually large amount from one place - there's not much profit in wasting time trying to figure out who it is. *sigh*

Coding Questions
Hi everybody!
Just two quick questions:
1. what code do you use to list the trackbacks under the post in the main body--ie a line showing each trackback, title etc?
2. is there an easy way to create a condensed format in a two column sheet? in html it would be done by making the whole thing in a table, and setting the table width at 75% or whatever, but I'm not sure how to do it in CSS. Any thoughts? (what we're trying to do is create a format/look that will produce relatively equivalently among different browser resolutions---in our current format the right hand column is getting kicked down to the bottom for many readers.)
Thanks in advance!

Mr LlamaMan:
Here is a link to the trackback code.
I'll take a look at your code tomorrow and work out why your column is dropping under... it's a fairly common problem after modifying a default template. One question: does it happen only in IE or in all browsers.

Posted by: Steve t.l.b. @ at August 26, 2004 04:06 AM

'Bottom bar' ususally happens when you have a 'float' and the content in the column in wider than the float.
You can try using overflow: hidden; in that div. Then the too wide cpontent will just be cut off at the margin. Check out the Radio.blog in my sidebar - it is cut off because it is wider than the column.
You can use this code for positioning if you are using a graphic banner and no re-sizing text:
position: absolute;
top: XXXpx;
right: XXXpx; or
left: XXXpx;
I'm sure there are other coding issues that cause 'Bottom bar', but off the top of my head, I can't detail them.

All New MuNu
Hi kids!
I've been busy this past week setting up the all new
MuNu Portal. Hop on over and give it a try!
You'll need to register to get all the goodies (and trust me, you want all the goodies!) but all that requires is a username and a working email address, so it's no great drama.
Anyway, have fun and let me know what you think.
Update: Wups, you can't play the games because you don't have any coins for the machines! I've given you 20 pengos each. Have fun!

Well, I can set you up with a forum in the Munuvian Underground. This is open to all the MuNu bloggers. Just say the word.
Or if you want to set up your own independent forum, I'd recommend using Fantastico (which lives in your CPanel account) to install phpBB. This takes a bit more work, but it does allow you to change the forum any way you like.
On the other hand, the main forum has cool things like attachments and pengos and games and pets (almost) and a bank and a stock market and a lottery and a photo gallery and a calendar and RSS and blog integration. Or will have shortly.
And trust me, you don't want to try to install all that stuff yourself...

Football begins, and a man's fancy turns to ice
That's right folks, it's time to start gearing up for the second annual
Inter-Munuvian Hockey Whoopass Jamboree!
The rules are simple:
1. If you have a favorite hockey team, place their logo somewhere on your front page.
2. Every time your team plays someone else's team in the Jamboree, the loser must place the winner's logo on their front page for 24 hours.
That's it!
Need an example? Let's say that
Victor's Washington Capitals are playing
Heather's St. Louis Blues and win (it's an example, not reality *snicker*), then
Heather will display the Caps logo prominently for a day or so, and
Victor can crow and link to and point out her shame and sudden increase in good blogging taste - yes, trash talking is encouraged.
Last year's line up (I assume you are all participating again):
Victor - Washington Capitals
Heather - St. Louis Blues
Helen - Dallas Stars
Ted - San Jose Sharks
Others I expect will participate this year:
Daniel - Atlanta Thrashers
Nic - Washington Capitals
Who else?
Gir, what moosey club do you follow now that the
Jets left town? Any Detroit fans? Who still admits that they kinda like the Rangers?
So everyone, let me know and I'll do the minimal setting of this up (translation: I'll make a list). If anyone needs, I have a source for team logo's if you can't find one.
Despite the name, I see no reason that this can't be open to
any and
all.
I just hope that there will
be a hockey season this year.
(
sorry for the cheap shot, Victor)

Referrers
A question: I am trying to keep a track of the top referrers to my site so I can keep an updated "top referrers" section. However from 4 different sources I get 4 very different answers. From using Cpanel (Webaliser) I get a set of results that doesn't ring entirely true against what I expect; when I use Sitemeter (I know, not the best) it has very different answers; when I look at the Truefresco referrers it's similar to Sitemeter with a couple of discrepencies; and when I use my old fashioned Spidey-sense there seem to be ommissions or ranks that are way out of kilter.
So the question is does anyone know of a decent way to track top referrers? Is there a better way of doing it through Cpanel? Or is it all guesswork, all the time?

Geek help requested
So I'm wandering through CP Panel, marveling at all the pretty lights and blinking doo-dads, when I come across an area the promises to tell me "interesting information" about my last 300 visitors...cool!
It seems that a lot of my hits (if not the majority) come from the Alliance logo image that bogsplotted Alliance members are using. That was not unexpected. What
was unexpected was
this referrer, using what I believe is called a "hotlink" to my Clinton Pez dispenser picture. I don't like that.
I considered trying to delete the image from my image page, but then
my post would suffer, too.
Then I found that CP has hotlink protection! Way Cool! Only, I'm afraid if I turn it on, all the bogsplotted Alliance members will lose their logo...
So--a little help? Anyone know how I can use the hotlink protection feature without making the poor bogsploters needlessly suffer?
UPDATE: I altered the image in my files, as you may notice if you click the link. That doesn't solve the bandwidth problem, but it's funny....
UPDATE part deux: Following Madfish Willie's instructions, I put as many Alliance URLS as I could find in the CP Panel list of recent accesses into the "allow" box, and then enabled the protection. We'll see if it works.
Oh, and
Jim--the picture I substituted for the clinton pez dispenser image is in the extended entry...

What you do is make a very funny or grotesque image with the original file name and upload it. Then go take a screen shot of his page and share it with your readers. hehehe

You could just delete the image file that they are stealing.
To allow all Alliance members to access the image file and no one else, you would have to enter their URLs in the Enable Hotlink Protection: box. That will prevent all other sites from stealing your bandwidth.
Make sure you have clicked the Activate button

This thread reminded me of something I wanted to ask a while back. When I enable the hot-link protection for my site, no one, except me, can see my images! I had the opposite problem at ittasteslikeburning.net. When I would refresh my site, all my images would disappear. No one else seemed to have this problem though. Any ideas?

Susie: If you want to get all the Alliance blogroll, find a site that used the blogroll script, do a View Page Source, and it should list the entire blogroll. then just copy and paste into the Hotlink Protection box. I don't know who keeps it updated now that there isn't a showcase contest, but I assume someone keeps it current.

Hi, I own the site on which your image is being hotlinked.
As you know, it's a forum, and whoever did it probably did not have any idea of the complications of hotlinking.
If you need help with hotlink protection through mod_rewrite (the method cpanel uses) feel free to ask about it on our web development forum and I'll be sure to personally go by and help you out.
Regards,
Craven de Kere

Almost famous
Yours Truly is in the printies. I was interviewed by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Details over here. Annoying registration is unfortunately required to view the article and Bugmenot seems to be down. Drat.
On an unrelated note, traffic at Ellis Island is a bit low. Can I get some excitement for
Elizabeth? She's an awesome writer and I think she'll be a wonderful addition to Munuviana.

Styling the Dropdown Munuvians list
I was updating my Dropdown muNu blogroll and noticed that Lynn & physics geek had the same question I do. How do we go about styling the output of that list with CSS so we can get a smaller font that matches what's being used in our 'side' style?
Doesn't seem to matter how I wrap it, the output is unaffected. What am I missing?

Don't know if this will work...
form {
font-size: 80%;
}
Notice that there is no Class [.]or ID [#] indicator before the class form... this will, however, change all form elements in your HTML, including your search form(s) or any other drop down menus.
See if that will work, and if it does, I'll work on a specific fix for the MuNu menu.

Paul:
That won't work. Try this for your blog in particular:
option {
font-size: 67%;
height: 15px;
}

I tried to find some HTML that would let me size the width of the box, but couldn't get the size="xx" tag to work anywhere in that code.
Perhaps Jim or Rob or Pixy or someone else might have another, more elegant solution?

Thanks for the help MadFish!
As I mentioned in our emails, the box still defaults to the width of the longest line. I trimmed the length of some of the longer blog names to get it to fit well.
I then removed the reference to the initial default title (set to THE LIST in the script) because that line didn't get styled to smaller text size by the 'option' style you suggested above. (at least not in FireFox. You say it did size properly in Mozilla?)
So now I've got things looking quite nice in FireFox, but there's the usual gotcha. It looks like total shit in Internet Imploder. The list box is much wider, and it causes the whole bloody div to widen, making the whole sidebar widen too much and overlap the blog body as well. I can hide the overflow, but that still looks like crap as it hides the dropdown arrow. Yech.
**sigh**
Bloody IE.

Ahh the age old select dilema... it's a tricky one. Let me say now that you are going to have no end of trouble styling it in IE. This is becasue IE uses the windows VB dropdown control which has very limited properties. Mozilla will allow you more control but even then it can be tricky.
basically a dropdown / select tag can be styled by the following without hitting too many problems:
width (in PX or %)
font-family
font-size
color
background-color
Anything else won't render in IE and may have weird issues in other browsers. Of course Mozilla renders them all perfectly.
If you need any more info then please feel free to email me directly.

Oh and I agree we need to get an id attached to that dropdown. Maybe consider replacing the name attribute which is due to be deprecated anyway.
Posted by: Rob @ at August 17, 2004 11:18 AM
7
Insert this into #links
overflow: hidden;
That will make the drop-down box cut off at the edge of the links column. It cuts off everything that won't fit the width of the links column. You won't be able to see the little down arrow at the end of the drop-down box, but if you click inside the actual box, the list displays at full-width.
Not the ideal solution, but it should do the trick without having to redo the script every time someone else is added to the group.
This solution was only tested in Mozilla.

MadFish;
Unfortunatley, as I mentioned, the whole thing blows up in IE, even/especially withe the overlow attribute.
I'll keep playing, & be in touch with Rob when I have a better idea of what might get me closer, but for now, it's a no-go.

It works fine in IE for me with just the overflow:hidden set. I just copied from the original MuNu post, and pasted into my sidebar. No other styles applied to it, no other class wrapped around it. As I mentioned in the last comment though, the down arrow is cut off, but when you click in the box, it open full width.

Pixy? Paul? Bueller? Anyone?

I just noticed this little gem on my sidebar -- that I don't recall seeing there before. Is this a Gremlin in my archives? Something I need to fix?

Em:
That's quite a trick! December of never??
No idea what might have caused it, but have you tried rebuilding specifically your monthly archives? (Using the MT interface)
It's definitley orphaned, as I think your page is set to only show 6 months of archives? It's not even contiguous, so a tag is being misinterpreted somewhere. (There is actually an archive page generated for that nonexistent month)
Sorry I'm not more help.
Ohhh Piiiiixy!

Ms Emma: Since I still have access to your site [please go ahead and delete me as an author - my screen is getting filled up - thanks] I went ahead and checked your template... nothing wrong in there... then I checked your entries... your very first entry, titled 'Words Fail Me...', is dated 0000.00.00... your could either change the date or delete it to make your Monthly Archives display the list correctly.

Template Question
I'm trying to restyle and retool my blog, and in going through the stylesheet I see a definition for a CSS div id with the name #banner-commentspop. I've searched through all the other templates for my site, and can't find any reference to a <div id="banner-commentspop">.
Whenever I update a stylesheet or template, I like to prune out unused or unnecessary code. Is there some external template for the comments that incorporates this style definition, or can I safely delete it?
Thanks for any insight!

First, new email addy, mamamontezz@sbcglobal.net . Second, I can't get anything to rebuild. Posts go up fine, but any deletions (as in when I'm so impatient I hit the save button twice and get double posts) won't take. No will template changes/bloglink additions. I click "rebuild" and I get a tiny little version of he MT login screen.
And it doesn't seem to be just here. A blog I help out with at www.mblog.com is having the same MT problem. That's where I found it first.
Any suggestions? I have an embarassing doublepost up and no way to remedy it. *blushes*
