Import From Blogger
All right -- I admit it. I've been posting at Rhymes With Right since April, but still haven't imported my old posts from my old blogger site.
"Why?", you may ask (then again, you may not care -- but I'm guessing you do since you've read this far).
Well, it is a little matter of not understanding the instructions in the MT manual.
So, I need one of two things:
1) Someone to explain the process to me in words of (preferably) one syllable or less; or
2) Someone to volunteer to do the dirty deed for me (no, not THAT dirty deed!).
Any help is appreciated -- and please forgive my utter lameness.

Greg:
Pixy recently posted a set of really good instructions on importing Blogspot specifically to MuNu. It's at
http://munuviana.mu.nu/archives/087301.php
Have a look at that post & see if you feel up to it. If not, by all means post back here and we can set you up to have either Jim or I do it for ya.
Hey Pixy... just in case you read this.
Is there any way we can get the Search script on this page to only search Munuviana, instead of returning results form all MuNu blogs? It would really help Munuvians to be able search for tech answers here before having to post. There's a wealth of info here, but it's bloody hard to track down. Oh, and can you put the Importy instructions link in the sidebar as a Useful Thingy?

The Importy instructions were excellent, but I've had awful trouble importing more than 999 posts. I somehow managed to get up to 1,200 or so (don't ask me how), but lately when I import, instead of importing posts which I have not already imported, it imports posts which I already have, thus duplicating the posts on my Mu.Nu site. Then I have to go thru the entire list of posts on my Mu.Nu site and delete the duplicates. Forgive my lack of expertise, but there has GOT to be an easier way to do this. Technies can complicate a glass of water.

That's what I had to do too, even knowing the post I was looking for. Thing is, some of the recent new recruits won't know how to get google to limit itself to jsut one site. It'd be great to be able to say: Iff you've got a question, be sure to search Munuviana first.
But not when, as Pixy points out, that's 15,000 posts since June. Holy crap, Pixy!

David - Yeah, the MT search function (at least in 2.6; haven't really pushed the 3.1 version very hard yet) - is complete crap.
But MT wasn't really designed to handle 100,000+ posts. It's holding up fairly well, but we do need to move to something better, and I'm working on that again now that I've finished moving house.

Categories
I am having difficulty with making categories work. (I since removed the code out of frustration, so you won't find the categories at my site.) When I had them on the site, I'd click on them, and instead of seeing the posts within the category, I get one of those "Page cannot be found." Can anyone please clearly explain how to make them function correctly? Thank u.

Mark, I think we talked about this before, but just to make certain...
You have to turn on category archiving before you can do anything with them. The fact you're getting a 'not found' error makes me suspect categories haven't been enabled.
Go to your MT admin page, and click on the Weblog Config button in the links down the left side of the page.
Next page, click on the Archiving link at the top of the page. NOT the link in the list below General Setting, the one along the top of the window (2nd line) that comes after Core Setup and Preferences.
On the resulting page, under the column that says Archive Type, look at the bottom entry. It will say Category with a checkbox beside it. I'm betting there's no check in the box. If not, put a check in there, then click Save. Once the page has saved, you will need to (re)build your category archives in order to actually create the files on the server.
To do that, just click the Rebuild Site button on the sidebar, then when the little window pops up, click the dropdown arrow and tell it to Rebuild Category Archives Only. Then click the Rebuild button.
This will create the files on the sever so there's something there when you link to your categories from your index page.
Let me know how it goes (or that the category archiving had already been turned on).

Apiarist wants to know how I got my blog to do that pop-up comment thingie.
Because I do most of blog tweaking while drinking beer (or cleaning up beer-related messes) I don't really
remember how I did that.
So, how'd I do that? I'm certainly not so savvy as to have coded it myself. Wasn't there a "Useful Thingy" link about that somewhere or was this something I squirreled away from the MT forums?

Your blog appears to have the default comment templates. So you probably didn't do anything to make it that way. There is a script that shows your comments inline, withut the pop up window. Those are really the only two options I know about

I was just monkeying around with the same thing.
I'm modifying a template for three-column design that I nicely glommed from Eric.
Eric doens't use the 'pop up' comments window whereas I did (on my old template) and still wanted to use it.
I THINK that if you insert the following code between the and tags in the Main Index template that you'll get the desired effect, i.e. 'pop up' comment window:
function OpenComments (c) {
window.open(c,
'comments',
'width=580,height=580,scrollbars=yes,status=yes');
}
function OpenTrackback (c) {
window.open(c,
'trackback',
'width=480,height=280,scrollbars=yes,status=yes');
}
The only thing you might have to also modify would be the layout/format of the 'Comments' thingy at the bottom of each post.
While I'm no genius at MT coding, this worked for me.
Posted by: Mad Mikey @ at July 31, 2005 09:58 PM

And since we're on the subject....
How do I adjust the margins within the 'pop up' comments window? The current settings that I have make the text butt right up against the left-side of the comments window and I cannot figure out how to adjust it.
I know that messing around with the comment settings in the Main Index template only affects the bottom portion of the post window.
I've also looked at the Comment Listing template, but that is getting me nowhere fast.

after the "scrollbars=yes, status=yes" bit, and before the single quote, try adding ",padding=15px". If that adds the space all around, you can adjust the 15 up or down to suit. If that works, I'm not entirely positive that will.

Arrrgh....Then: "I hate Firefox! I love IE!"
Now... "I HEART FIREFOX! I hate IE!"
Okay peeps, so my template was working sofunkyfine in both FF and IE...and now for some reason...in IE, the RIGHT column will shift ever so slight left.
Before the page loads in its entirety in IE, everything will be cool and aligned properly, but by the time it finisheds loading, THEN the right side bar will eek a bit to the left. What the heck? At this present time where I am I don't have Opera loaded on this machine to check it in that browser, but in Firefox, things are sweet as always.

That's what I thought, too, Willie, I remember you saying something about that a while back... I made the calender smaller AND removed it altogether and it only slightly eeked a little less so to the side...but it is STILL shifting once the entire page loads. I wonder why it's only happening on the right side bar and not the left?
Like I said, everything is perfectly fine in FF(yay!) but IE still sucks.

Try "commenting out" the code for the calendar and see if that makes the problem go away... if so, you have isolated the problem and we can give you better assistance.

What does "commenting out" mean?
And why does everyone think it's the calender that's to blame? I *think* I tried removing the calender and archives altogether and from the Main Index and I dont think that did anything.

Hehe. That looks funny.
Ok, sorry, I really DO know how frustrating that can be -- but that last second just really does look funny.
There's two things I'd try changing some of the settings for to see what might be the problem. On your style sheet for the calendar, you have a line width set to 110%. I have seen where IE really screws up percentages inside of divs. You might try reducing or even removing that to see what effect it has.
If that doesn't do anything, it's likely how IE interprets edges vs. Firefox. Your main content section has a right side of 208 with a border of 2. Your links section (right column) has a right of 5, width of 180, padding of 5 (each side), and a border of 1 (each side). Because IE interprets how to show those things differently than FF, I'd try making some of them smaller and see if it doesn't stop the problem -- maybe just increasing the content right to 212 or 216 might fix it.

Blog*Spot Shenanigans
How many us are Blog*Spot refugees? A lot, I bet. Well, you might want to know that some slimy type folks are finding old Blog*Spot URL's that you and I have shut down and re-opening them to sell stuff. For example, my old blog was Eric's Random Musings, before JohnL of Texas Best Grok so graciously sponsored me into MuNuvia. Anyhow, now that I'm here, I discovered, after reading this post on The Mudville Gazette, that some weasel was using my old URL to sell ringtones to people.

Tilesy:
CPanel is the control panel for your little corner of the MuNu server.
To access it, you type your site address, plus a colon and the numbers 2082 into your browser's address bar. In your case, this would be the address:
http://tandc.mu.nu:2082
That will bring up a log-in window. You'll need your CPanel username and password that Pixy would have given you when you were first set up. It's not necessarily the same as your Movable Type log-in info.

You don't need to delete the photos from the server. To remove them from your blog posts, just go to your login page, click on "manage weblog", "edit entries", find the post and remove the html that brings up the photo.

Deferred Pinging
Hey Pixy, since you're sitting around with nothing to do
-- It's not like you're moving or using dialup or anything, right? Oh...uh...
Well, if you get a chance, I just noticed something about the deferred posts, and it might not be possible to fix, but it would be neat -- it seems that when a deferred post gets posted (which works great, by the way), it does not ping. If I re-save the post, the pings will happen, but not when it's posted.
Is this by design? Has it been addressed and I can't find it on the site?
Again, it's no biggie, just a "neat thing" if it could work as *I* want it to...

UPDATE: iPetitions was online briefly this morning but the amendment petition was not available. As of 2:00 EDT they are offline again. When I have the chance, I am going to find a new home for the petition. Possibly tonight but more likely on the weekend.
UPDATE: iPetitions seems to be online again (8:32 EDT) but the amendment petition still defaults to the under construction page. I sent them another email begging for a solution. Calling them seems pointless as their voicemail tells you to expect a quicker response to email. I'm willing to wait until noon tomorrow before pulling the plug and going to another site. Now Blogging From An All-New Undisclosed Location
The move was a mitigated disaster (the movers did a very good job, but I wasn't ready in time), but at least it happened, and I am now up and running - ish - from Pixy Central Mk II.
I'll be busy for the next few days (now I have to go back to the old place to clean it...) but after that it's all MuNu all the time, excepting short breaks for my day job and sleep.
P.S. I'm still on dialup. Dialup, Pixy says, is slow, really slow. You won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindboggling slow it is. You may think it's slow when you've gone over your monthly download limit, but that's just peanuts to dialup.
P.P.S. Multi-purpose appliances are great until they break. If you have, just by way of an example, a combined washer/dryer, it's really good because you can put dirty clothes in, turn it on, and come back later to find them clean and dry. But if it breaks down, you end up hand-washing everything and then hanging it up to dry in the bathroom.

Combined washer/dryer? I want one! Didn't know they existed!
Is there something that folds them for you?

Pixy, congrats on the new place. No rush or anything, but any idea on when the shutting off old trackbacks will be implemented? I've been suffering a bit of a tidal wave of late.

I'm going to try a SQL command to close all old trackbacks today. It should be fairly easy, and then I can set it up to run once a week or something.

Begging For Attention
I have been trying to get lost of attention for the Open Source Amendment Project. And while it has grown in participation it is not quite where I want it or where it needs to be.
So I decided to add Technorati Tags to the posts to get them some more exposure. Everything is configured the way it is supposed to be in
Ecto. Ecti inserts the tags into the post just like I told it to. The tags link to the right pages. MY POSTS DON'T SHOW UP.
I even went here and did a
manual ping. MY POSTS DON'T SHOW UP.
I also joined a TTLB Community,
Life, Liberty, Property. I don't know if it is related to above problem, but MY POSTS DON'T SHOW UP.
I'm just trying to change the world a little. Why wont they listen?

I've had nothing but trouble with Technorati, like the number of links to my blog never updating in Technorati, even though I knew darn well they had.
By the way, i was planning to include your latest revision in the Carnival of Liberty on Monday.
And TTLB is having problems, but it isn't, as far as I can tell, related to MuNu. And I have yet to hear back from Bear.

It would help us out if you could clean up some of the almost 1200 markup errors on your blog homepage.

Naill,
This is not my blog home page. This is the group blog for all mu.nu blogs.
When I run the validation on nomayo.mu.nu I get a mere 331 errors not the 1103 for this page!
Posted by: Stephen Macklin @ at July 17, 2005 12:55 PM

Hey Stephen, I don't know if I'd believe that validation page anyway--I ran PP through, and tried to fix one of the "errors" it found, and it screwed up my blog. I unfixed it.
Posted by: Susie @ at July 17, 2005 03:53 PM

I disregarded it pretty quickly. Most of the errors had to do with open and close tags where there were multiple paragraphs in a blockquote.
Beyond that there were a couple of things about the pull down menu script that I wasn't close to understanding.

I HATE the paragraphs in blockquotes thing in XHTML. It sucks. It sucks neutron stars through carbon nanotubes, that's how much it sucks.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at July 17, 2005 11:51 PM
7
So what's the solution?
Enclose each paragraph of quoted text in separate blockquote tags?
A royal pain in the posterior but doable.
Posted by: Stephen Macklin @ at July 18, 2005 01:05 AM

But if you have a stylesheet that puts boxes around your blockquotes, that will break your layout.
XHTML is retarded.

OK. So I cleaned up some of the multiple paragraphs in a blockquotes. Lucky for me I don't have boxes on quotes.
I put up a really small simple post announcing the petition going on line. An what do you know, the tags worked. the post is listed in all four groups.
And what have I gotten for the effort. Precisely nothing. Not one single solitary hit.
Which is just as well because THE DAMN PETITION HASN'T BEEN AVAILABLE ALL DAY. AND THEY HAVEN'T RESPONDED TO EMAIL TO LET ME KNOW WHY.
But hey, before it went down it got 2 signatures.

Right margin links and stuff
On my new blog, why aren't all the links, calendar, search function, etc. moving to the right margin? Is it because I (we) don't yet have enough posts up? When we do, will all of those move from below the last post to the right margin?
Thanks.

Show/Hide Commie -- HTML or PHP?
Uh oh. Watch out. It's Kyer again.
I want to make my comments extendable. I noticed in the Thingys and Doodads section there are two helpful posts for this.
However, I don't know the difference between HTML and PHP. ::winces at noviceness::
First, what IS the diff, and second, how do I find out which uh.. "version" site I have?
I remember a while back somebody here in the Family (or maybe it was the strange drifter that handed me these scratch n sniff stickers that make me...)
::collapses:: ***
ok, I'm back now. Someone told me to input:
[?php ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); ?]
(it has "<";s on both side, not brackets)
at the top of my main index template. What does that do?
ALSO ---- In implementing the Entendable POST code, it says to implement the code in the HEAD section of "every page you want to utilize the script"....other than in the Main Index, where else would I put it???

PHP is the way to go as you can use all kinds of other cool toys with PHP.
If you go into the templates and look at the output file name for your main index, it will read main.php if you are running php. If not, it will read .html.
Instructions for changing over to php are here:
http://munuviana.mu.nu/archives/075063.php
If that makes your brain explodey, let me know and I can set it up for you

Oh, and as for the extended entry script...Some people put in their archive templates. This also works for the show comments here script.

You're set up with PHP, Kyer.
That gzhandler is a compressor (decompressor? precompressor? whateverthehellitis) and it helps save the server some work. It's good to have in there because saving load on the server is very good.
Might speed up graphics loading too, but I'm not completely sure about that.

Has Anyone Here Gone WordPress?
I've tossed around the idea of going to WordPress instead of the MT upgrade. Mostly I'd like to go to it because #1, you can password protect and #2, you can park a post at the top. Not that I have the inclination to do either of these very often, but you never know. If I have the capacity to do so, I might just feel a bit better about not sensoring myself as much.
Anyway, I know that our cpanel gives us the option. I'm just not sure how moving old posts & comments works, in addition to stylesheet. AND I'm not sure where to login once I do that. I might have more questions, but those come to mind first.
So, has anyone done it????

I have ... and haved moved a couple of other blogs over as well. I'd check with Pixy though as it will put a bit more strain on the ole PHP and MySQL.
Migrating posts and comments is done by exporting from MT, and importing into wordpress using a script. Stylesheets you'll have to do by hand (or get some help).
If you need pointers on stylesheets and stuff then give me a shout

Wordpress is fine. You can install it with a couple of clicks using Fantastico.
The only problem is that it's not multi-blog (yet), so if we went Wordpress in a big way we'd have 170 separate installs of Wordpress to maintain, which would be yucky.
There's Wordpress MU, which is a multi-user version, but when I tried it a while back it wasn't ready for prime time.

So 'can' we try out wordpress if we install it in a separate directory? As I understand it, the Spam Karma 2 plugin has obliterated almost all trackback spam. Wouldn't that just ROCK?
