Domain names
I was gifted my own domain name, registered through GoDaddy. www.stevejanke.com will now by the domain by which "Steve Janke: Angry in the Great White North" goes by.
But I need to make it work first.
I've enabled forwarding, and that seems to work. But I have questions. Should I be modifying the nameservers identified at GoDaddy? They are pointing at the "parked" servers. Should I enable masking? If so, what do I need to be aware of? What about weblog configurations here? Should I replace the Site URL and Site Archive fields for the weblog with paths using "www.stevejanke.com"?
Any other advice? Any other landmines I need to know about? Thanks all.

You need to direct to the name servers (not parker ones) Jim can straighten it out with the exact name. But that is no redirect guarnatee as I did that and am waiting on mine due to some fluke so FYI.
Jim is looking into it and hopefully will get back to us soon!

Domain name servers:
Primary: ns.mu.nu
Secondary: ns2.mu.nu
Let me know when you switch those over and I'll get it in on this end.

Dear Steve Janke,

6
So what does this do, exactly?
Posted by: Steve Janke @ at January 19, 2006 10:05 PM
7
Okay, the way it works is this:
When you look up a domain name, like, say, stevejanke.com, the first thing it does it finds out what .com means. Then it goes to the DNS server for .com (actually, there's a whole bunch of these), and asks where the DNS server for stevejanke.com is.
The .com DNS server knows that the stevejanke.com DNS servers are ns.mu.nu and ns2.mu.nu, because that's what you've told it. So I just need to update our servers so that stevejanke.com maps to the existing angrygwn.mu.nu. Which I have now done, so let's see if it works...

"Site URL" and "Archive URL" have been updated in the "Core Setup" screen.
Now masking. Good thing? I understand it uses a frame into which your site is displayed, the frame hiding the old URL. Any issues with doing this?

Update! From
Da Goddess:
Mikey had surgery tonight to remove the blood clot and stop other bleeding. His intracranial pressure is rising (not a good sign) and he remains in a medically induced coma. His wife is trying her best to be strong, but it's difficult.
Da Goddess and
Smash and some others are going to be setting up a fund to help out the family, as they certainly won't be bringing in any $$ for a while, as Mikey has a long recovery ahead and his wife will need to be with him in the hospital. Details forthcoming on their pages.

*tiny little plea for chivalry*
A certain someone recently brought to my attention that now that the comment spam epidemic of early '05 is now history, that my preview-before-commenting booby trap can go away. I'm cool with that.
Now, could some kind soul share with me what code it was that I changed in the first place to get it to be all wonky and annoying? Specifically, what should I change on which template? I have pop-up comments...I think for now I'd like to keep 'em. I don't have the mental fortitude to be tinkering alone tonight...I left my mad scientist jacket at work.

OK, so I am kicking off a new website designed for those who are infertile and hate their lives and everyone around them. I have found a picture I want to use and everything. What I haven't been able to do is design the page, mostly because I absolutely suck at web design (for example the skins on my webpage are bust and I've no idea how to fix them) and I hate doing it.

Flickr
Hi there! New Munuvian aboard! And one who is trying to figure stuff out
Thus some hand holding may be in order, if anyone would be so kind and willing.
I am new to all of this and god knows the head is swimming just thinking about designing the site and trying to make it look like something more than a template... but that is another post.
So after searching the search function for Flickr and finding nada... what I am wondering is whether anyone here has experience using Flickr (I have a free account until I decide if I think it will work well) on a mu.nu blog? In particular how to post more than one Flickr photo in a blog entry (I have set Flickr up with my fidgetyknitting.mu.nu blog and tested to it with individual photos, which works- but would like to put up more)
Any ideas? Many Thanks!

I beat Flickr and made it bend to my will
You have to love it when you start having online conversations with yourself! Especially when you get paid by work to figure this shit out on their dime
For those of you who, like myself, are similarly technically incompetent (this from someone who has worked for the "Evil Empire"

here is the "short how to" of what to do with Flickr for posting.
Should you only want to put one image in your blog you can easily use Flickr's built in tool from that image ("blog this"). However, should you want to have a post with multiple images... you will have to do the work on your own.
Open up your MT and create your post. Once you have created your post, go to Flickr and click on the first image you want to insert. When there in the top bar choose the "all sizes" pick the size you would like to post to the blog. At the bottom of the page there is a box that has HTML code to paste. Go to the post in MT and place it where you would like it, apply the alignment tags ( etc) and then rinse, lather, repeat for all subsequent images. I would suggest previewing your post before you publish and then... VOILA c'est fait accompli!
Cheers!

How do you implement security (i.e. prevent anyone from posting to your blog) with email posting? Put a password in the text of the email?
Posted by: David Boxenhorn @ at January 10, 2006 09:56 AM
5
The way it's done at blogsplat is that you choose a security password/phrase and it's implemented in a specific way into the email address for the posting. For example if you chose the password "cheese" you would send the email to something like "yourname.cheese@blogsplat.com". Technically anyone you share this address with could post to your blog, I suppose.

It would be nice to be able to email in a post. I was really after a blog program that would run on Windows Pocket PC 2003 which is on my new HP iPAC. But, since I cannot find anyting that will run, I am forced to emailing the posts.

It seems to me that blog software for a PDA would be a natural. There's five different blogging apps out there for the Palm. I know that there aren't nearly as many Win Mobile developers and apps, but it still seems like there should be at least one. Unfortunately, Sac Republicrat, Ted of Rocket Jones, and I haven't been able to find anything that even hints at the existence of such an app existing.
So, for those in the same boat as Ted and Republicrat, email blogging is the solution.
Posted by: Eric @ at January 11, 2006 08:55 PM

Oh, there are plenty of PDA blogging apps for the PocketPC, there just aren't any that I could make work. I've tried four (I think) and each looked abandoned at different stages of development.
Posted by: Ted @ at January 11, 2006 11:07 PM
9
Well now, the real problem is that there just aren't nearly as many active non-corporate developers for PocketPC. Palm has a large developer community and there is tons of freeware. It's one of the pluses to a Palm, all the available software, easily 3 times as much as for the PocketPC.

Last PDA Post for a While
At least on MuNuviana. For our fellow MuNuvianans who don't have Palm based PDA's, there is nothing in the way of blogging software that Ted, Republicrat, or I have been able to find for the Pocket PC type PDA's. So, the other valid option is to blog via email. There are a couple of plugins for MT that enable blogging by email. Are they installed, by chance? If not, could they be installed? I'm sure that our Windows PDA brethren would be eternally grateful.

For those who are interested, I reviewed four PDA blogging tools for the Palm OS. If you have a Palm OS based PDA that has a live connection to the 'Net, whether the connection is WiFi, GSM/GPRS, EV-DO or a bluetooth modem, these tools will allow you to blog in real time from your PDA.
Eric's PDA Blogging Review
The state of the art is not bad at all. If you are thinking of getting a new PDA or Smartphone, take a look and find a tool you like.

MT Question - "Rebuilding"
If I do something simple like editing a comment on a post, do I have to Rebuild the entire blog or can I get away with just Rebuilding Indexes only? Anyone?

Anything you do in a post will be implemented just by saving that post. No rebuild needed.

Generally speaking, when you get the message to rebuild, you only need to rebuild your indexes and not the entire blog. When you change your archive templates, you have different options: rebuild your archives and the changes will be reflected in all the archive posts or rebuild only your indexes and the changes will be reflected in all subsequent posts.

But yeah, just save the post and it will automatically do what's necessary.

Uncooperative MT-Blacklist
Folks, I'm probably missing something obvious, but can anyone help me with the following: I'm plowing through the holiday gift of spam, and MT-Blacklist is being very useful. However, when I add say "bobs-animal-lust.com" to the list, I can't get MT-B to go through any remaining comments and extract those which match the entered domain, using the blacklist. MT-B responds to my request by saying, "Out of the last 250 comments, there are none on entries for which you have editing privileges that match your search criteria."
This is of course a blatant lie, because I'm only trying to work on my blog and I've been deleting comments via MT-B for a while, one by one. I don't mind swinging the bloody sword of Blacklist individually, but I would prefer to automate the process where possible.
What am I doing wrong?

When it says "out of the last 250 comments", it means "out of the last 250 comments across all of munu", not just your blog.
So just increase the number until it finds what you want.

Oh. Er, right. Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember reading something to that effect before. I'll go slink away now in embarrassment. Thanks for the clarification!

No worries.
It took me a while to work that out originally. It's a bit confusing when there are 200 other bloggers on the same system.

Trackback question again!
Okay, peeps, I know I posted about this last week, but I just can't help but bring it up again. (Now that I have access to Munuviana, I'm going to take advantage of it.)
I cannot figure out what is going on with the trackbacks for my blog,
Cardinal Martini. The trackback links don't work, except when they do.
See, for example:
http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-tb.cgi/143581
That is the TB link for this post:
http://cardinalmartini.mu.nu/archives/149370.php
Strange thing is that if I ping that TB link from either my own blog or from
Munuviana, then the pings go through and the trackback is listed. But when I ping that exact same TB link from either Haloscan or WizBang's standalone thingie, the pings fail. I also know from a couple of other people, one using Wordpress and the other using Blahgsplat/Haloscan that their trackback pings to my blog aren't working either.
I've checked the activity log, and I can't find anything about pings being rejected.
Does anyone know what's up with this situation, and how I can fix it?
Thanks!

I'll take another look. Most likely it is a problem with our trackback filter, Snark!. I did test it with pings from Wordpress before, and it did work, so I'm a bit puzzled.

Ah. Well, that's one answer. The whole of Blogspot has got itself blacklisted.
I'll have to fix that.

I fixed that problem Ted. It's related to some experimenting I'm doing with WAP/WML. When I'm done, expect to see a version 2.0 of my PDA templates that is much more optimized for PDA's.

Sandcrawler Invasion
I don't know if this has anything to do with the fact that I'm still not getting emails for comments and track backs, but I revealed the address bar in a comment window and somehow it's displaying a Jawa Report emoticon!
Never mind - it went away. I guess it wasn't part of the problem just junk in the cache! (no offense).
UPDATE: Actually I just posted an answer to a comment, and the Jawa came back!
