Style Skinner!
Kyer asked about setting up a stylesheet switcher, so here it is below the fold...
I don't remember from where the code was gleaned so I don't know whom to credit... Rob did some adjustments to make it work better, a hearty thank-you to him... one caveat - it only works right for 9 or less stylesheets.

That's so weird, I was just mucking around in the CPanel and it showed me as using 75% of my allowed bandwidth for the month.
Just for an FYI, what is the bandwidth limit for each blog?
Posted by: Vinnie @ at December 31, 2005 05:22 AM

Folks, don't panic, this is just an annoying "feature" in cPanel, the site management tool on the server. It requires that some value be entered for maximum bandwidth at each site - it can't be left blank. It looks like you managed to get to Pixy's arbitrary default.
As soon as he sees the situation, he'll be able to reset you. As a matter of fact, as the calendar rolls over, cPanel may reset you itself.
Annoying sure, but emminently fixable.
Jen, some ritual offering of M&M's might be in order though, just to cover your bases.

I'm sure the boring blogs don't have the problem. Does cPanel support the infinity symbol?
Posted by: Ontario Emperor @ at December 31, 2005 10:31 PM
10
Sorry!!!
All fixed now. I've doubled the bandwidth allocation for you and Annika.
Lawren had just gone over her limit too, and Munuviana was right on the edge.
On the old server, this feature didn't work - it never cut anyone off. On the new server, it works great, and this was our first full month, so... Ouchie time.
The bandwidth allocation is 5GB or 10GB per month for new moos, and I adjust it over time for the popular blogs. Except when I forget...
It's really just to make sure nothing goes berserk. You're allowed to upload videos, for example, but if you get linked by Slashdot and suddenly 100,000 people want to download the file, it will stop them before they suck the server dry.

Skinnable sites?
How does one go about making their site "skinnable"? I've seen it done with background colors and banners and such... I *think* I just might make a version where the background is white, text is black etc. and the other skin is just the inverse.
anybody have any links or primers?

As far as just making a "negative" of your current site, you could just put a link in the sidebar to a different index file with associated css file...
Index2.php with a file pointer in the header to a negative.css stylesheet.

My cookie recipe
Here is my recipe for perfect chocolate chip cookies. Follow it exactly, and no substitutions.
2 1/4 cups unbleached all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 sticks salted butter
|
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (pure, not imitation)
2 large eggs
12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
|
Combine softened butter, vanilla sugar, and eggs until nice and creamy. Add flour, salt, baking soda, and chocolate chips.
use a table spoon and place on baking sheet, bake in 375 oven for 11 minutes or until slightly brown on top.

Technical question about MT
Hi Everybody! I love MuNuviana. And, I love Movable Type -- so much better than Blahger.
But I have a bit of a technical problem: trackbacks don't seem to be working on my blog. I've tried pinging it using Haloscan and from
XRLQ's which runs on Word Press (where I'm guestsblogging this week -- ahem).
What's the deal with the trackbacks? Maybe I've messed up the code, or maybe I have to turn them on in the MT Config someplace. Does anyone have any ideas?

Trackbacks do need to be enabled in the web configuration. Yours are, so that's not the problem.
Try pinging yourself (man, that sounds naughty doesn't it?) with the Standalone Trackback Doohicky: http://www.aylwardfamily.com/content/tbping.asp
If that works the problem is probably with those other systems.
Posted by: Jim @ at December 28, 2005 11:10 PM

Also, our trackbacks are screened by a super-mega spam filter called Snark! Because of the way Snark! works, it could take a minute after you send the trackback for it to appear on your blog.

I just tried pinging myself with the standalone trackback thingamajig (not an altogether unpleasant experience). And it didn't work. Usually, there will be a response saying 0 errors or some such, but there was no response at all. I don't know what that means. Maybe the trackback addresses being generated for my posts are invalid or something. But that probably means the problem is not Snark! related, right?

Simon I'm having trouble with trackbacks to typepad too - I stopped by to see if I was the only one - apparently not! I've taken to using Wizbang's trackbacker... I wonder if it's typepad's extremely LOOOONNNGGG response time that's doing us in?
Even with Wizbang's form - it eventually timed out after about a minute.. althought that trackback went through.

Performancing for Firefox
Performancing for Firefox is here!
Of course you're probably wondering just what is Performancing for Firefox.
Well the good folks over at Performancing.com have written a blog editor for Firefox. So if you're using Firefox Version 1.5 or better, instead of writing your posts in Wordpress, Movable Type or Blogger you can use the Performacing Editor.
What makes this even better is you can setup your blog and post directly from the editor, like I did with this post. So you don't even have to log in to write or publish posts ever again.
To setup Performancing so it will automatically list your blogs you will need to walk through the following steps after you have installed the Plugin from the link above.
1) Press F8 key to open the Performancing editor.
2) Click the About Button.
3) Click the Launch Wizard Button.
4) Select your Blogging Platform from the list.
5) Change the Server API Folder to:
http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt-xmlrpc.cgi - If you're running Movable Type 2.64
http://mu.nu/mt/mt-xmlrpc.cgi - If you're running Movable Type 3.15
http://yourblog.mu.nu//xmlrpc.php - If you're running Wordpress (just be sure to replace the yourblog with your address).
6) Enter Your Username and Password.
7) Verify that the proper blogs have been pulled up and hit next!
From there you'll just select the blog you want to post too.
If you aren't running any other plugins / extensions for Firefox, I whole heartedly recommend you run
Performancing for Firefox.

"Grandpa stole bets"
Argh.
So there's this rather (uncool) cat who keeps commenting every so often on my blog (and I've seen him on Vinnie's and a few others as well) called "grandpa stole bets" where he just pastes this long rambling incoherent comment and somehow ties Homer Simpson, Che Guevara and Jews into it all...
I've blocked the IP for this comment several times now, but it keeps happening.
He/she/it always uses the same email address though: "hister@nostradamous.com"

Kyer, it's pretty nearly impossible to ban a live human troll, because they can simply adjust to whatever blocks are put in their way.
That being said, I'll add him to the Blacklist on the chance that it's a low-output bot (or a very stupid troll).

Mark:
As it so often the case in a site template, things are very interconnected, and one change can solve a problem, but create several others. I'm going to give you a specific edit to make to your blog, but first I'll try to explain what's happening. If you don't care to get in that deep, just skip to the end!
What's happening in your sidebar is that the <div> that creates the sidebar is being prematurely closed right after the first sidebar element. The rest of the items on the left side only look like they're in the right general area because text in html defaults to the left margin unless styled otherwise. Essentially, they're not even in the sidebar.
This explains why the sidebar text is so tight against the left border of your page, and runs across the page. Everything below the first image in the sidebar is actually unstyled text that is just trying to fill the page, starting from the left side.
Now, to fix it...
You need to go into your main index template, and find the section toward the bottom where you'll see this code:
<div id="links">
<div class="side"> <li><___
src="http://photos22.flickr.com/31690427_b3abd9840b_o.jpg"></li><p><b>
</div><p>
</div>
<div class="sidetitle">
E-mail:
</div>
<div class="side">
kotgd AT yahoo DOT com
<div class="side">
<a href=""></a><br />
</div>
<div align="center" class="calendar">
You need to delete the second </div> that occurs in that code.
Here's where the interconnected problems come in. I suspect that when you do that, you're going to find that your stylesheet is specifying too wide a column for your sidebar, given the rest of the dimensions of your blog. Rather than try to guess, or try to explain your options without you being able to see what I'm talking about, I'm going to suggest you make the above change, then we can look at the result, and I can help you decide if further adjustment is necessary.
If that's OK with you, just leave me a note here when you've made the edit to your index template.
Paul
By the way, you've got some seriously funky extraneous code in some weird places in your template. If you want to clean up the code that displays that first graphic in your sidebar, for example, the code that reads:
<div class="side"> <li><___
src="http://photos22.flickr.com/31690427_b3abd9840b_o.jpg"></li><p><b>
</div><p>
should actually read:
<div class="side"> <___

There's no reason for a single element to be in a list tag (that's where that weird dot beside the graphic is from; it's actually a bullet) and the <p> and <b> tags are unclosed, and don't serve any purpose anyway.

Sorry about that David - until I do a little more cleanup work I have to remember to manually tweak the DNS for each new account.
It's fixed now, but it could take up to four hours for the DNS to refresh for you.
