mu.nu - It's mackerel stewed in chocolate!

March 16, 2006

Call me sad...

So, looking through the SXSW convention, I see a lot of people have Blogger and Typepad gear, hats, t-shirts, that sort of thing. It sort of identifies them as bloggers, on shit hosts granted, but bloggers none the less.

Any thoughts on getting a cafe press or a spreadshirt thing going for mu.nu gear - any takers?

Cos, y'know, blogging is cool and shit. Yo.

Converting

Sorry, Pixy, but I'm going to follow Rightwing Duck into WordPress Land.

Well, you don't have to worry about it, Apothegm is going to handle the technical details.

I could just shut off comments again, but my nasty troll wants exactly that. He thinks he can control my blog.

Who the hell makes fun of Alzheimer's and thinks it's funny anyway? I've done everything I can. Ignoring him, deleting him, editing him, shutting off comments. Can't ban him, he uses proxy servers.

I need the comment moderation that WP provides.

I love MT, but, due to the licensing issues, in order to upgrade I'd have to move off of MuNu.

I'd rather go back to Blogsnot. MuNu isn't just a host. It's family.

Pretty Please....

I know it's been said before, but I will appeal again--if a Munuvian does not know the correct way to add Blacklist entries, please don't!!!!!! I just had to unlist imdb.com, as well as several English words that, while possibly offensive to some, might be used in comments on Harvey's or Jim's blogs.

When in doubt, don't Blacklist everything, ok?

Thanks!

Online shop

Hi!

A fellow munuvian (the very sexy Celeste) wants to set up an online shop to sell her handmade jewellery.

I'm happy doing the web design etc, but does anyone know of any good places to get server space, or a good online shop host etc?

Thanks!

WTF?

I see this whenever I try to send on of my MuNuby friends a TB:
MT::App::Trackback=HASH(0x8369f70) print() on closed filehandle $FOO at /home/blog/www/cgi/lib/MT/App/Trackback.pm line 43.

¿Que es?

MT tells me that the TB was sent successfully, but when I click back over to leave a comment or some such, I get the above thingy.

Pix? Jimbo? anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

MT Notifications Not Working

I have notifications setup where readers can enter their email address to receive an email when I put up a new post.

When I write a post, I select the appropriate option and click send.

It seems that it is not going out to my readers. It is only going out to my email, and my email is not even in the list. I am hoping this is a configuration error. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am assuming that my email is the email that was used to setup MT???

Thanks,

SR

Oops

Our database partition just got filled up. With log files. Which I enabled when we were having fruitcake errors the other day.

Sigh.

Fixed now.

This could cause issues with some of the databases. If you have installed your own copy of WordPress (or whatever) and it is having problems, email me and I'll run a repair on your database.

My blog search engine...

...done gone broke.

Actually, I never use it, and from what I can remember, it's always been broken.

Does anyone know how I can implement a new "search this site" function? I think I had whatever search code MT provided originally... perhaps I should use a Google or Technorati dealy?

Any i-clues?

Who did it?

I get this:
Invalid [] range "d-c" in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/ 196.7.0.160| 63.207.84.250| bestphonesellerinc@yahoo.com.hk| hellen4world81@hotmail.com, macrubyphonedealer@gmail.com| mobiletradingltd@earthlink.net| nomail@dontsendplz.com|([\w\-_.]+\.)?(l(so|os)tr)\.[a-z]2,|(babes|porn|boobs)[\w\-_.]*\.[a-z]2,|(cialis|meridia\b)[\w\-_.]*\.[a-z]2,|(diet|penis)[\w\-_.]*(pills|enlargement)[\w\-_.]*\.[a-z]2,|(free)[_.\-]?sex([\w\-_.]+)?\.[a-z]2,|(levitra|lolita|phentermine|viagra|vig-?rx|zyban|valtex|xenica at extlib/jayallen/Blacklist.pm line 3098.

whenever I comment on a Munuby site, even just the letter "X".....

Did someone ban English again?

I know it's complicated, so I don't screw with it. Can we have a place where we submit things to be blacklisted and then someone who knows what they're doing can add them in a timely fashion?

Thanks

(oops-- didn't see the previous)

You Think You Got Problems

What on earth does this mean:

Invalid [] range "d-c" in regex; marked by <-- HERE in m/ 196.7.0.160| 63.207.84.250| bestphonesellerinc@yahoo.com.hk| hellen4world81@hotmail.com, macrubyphonedealer@gmail.com| mobiletradingltd@earthlink.net| nomail@dontsendplz.com| ([\w\-_.]+\.)?(l(so|os)tr)\.[a-z]2,|(babes|porn|boobs)[\w\-_.]*\.[a-z] 2,|(cialis|meridia\b)[\w\-_.]*\.[a-z]2,|(diet|penis)[\w\-_.] *(pills|enlargement)[\w\-_.]*\.[a-z]2,|(free)[_.\-]?sex ([\w\-_.]+)?\.[a-z]2,|(levitra|lolita|phentermine|viagra|vig-?rx| zyban|valtex|xenica at extlib/jayallen/Blacklist.pm line 3098.

That hurts my pretty little head just to look at it!

Update: Sorry, I broke the global interweb. I put spaces in to make it better

Update 2: Oh. And this is what happens when I try to post a comment .

More on Blacklists

1) So, when MT offers that "quick de-spam using blacklist" option, should I decline, or should I just be looking at the window it produces, to make sure there aren't any common words and phrases in it?

2) Someone has blacklisted the phrase "beaut," which makes it difficult for Jeff of Beautiful Atrocities to comment on my blog. Can someone help?

What's Wrong with Benefits?

Apparently, the string "benef" is bad in comments.

Sorry if this isn't the right place to bring these things up. It's hard to talk economics or pet food when you can't use the string "benef."

Does someone have the magic to fix this?

changing link colors within blockquotes

Hi all,

Thanks to those who assisted me with creating a different format for my blog blockquotes. One problem still persists (just one!): How can I change the links (standard, active, etc.) colors within my blockquotes? I ask b/c the background color I've chosen for my blockquotes now makes it difficult to see any links within them. I tried copying the link codes from the beginning of the stylesheet template, posting it within the blockquote code, and merely changing the color parameters. No dice.

Thanks in advance!

DNS Problems Weirding Me Out

Since I updated the DNS a couple of days ago, there have been a number of people who haven't been able to reach munu, or some sites on munu, or who have had intermittent access.

As far as I can tell, though, everything is set up correctly.

For example:

# dig blog.mu.nu

; <<>> DiG 9.2.4 <<>> blog.mu.nu
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 29759
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 2

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;blog.mu.nu. IN A

;; ANSWER SECTION:
blog.mu.nu. 14400 IN A 69.72.215.227

;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
blog.mu.nu. 86400 IN NS kei.mu.nu.
blog.mu.nu. 86400 IN NS yuri.mu.nu.

;; ADDITIONAL SECTION:
kei.mu.nu. 14400 IN A 69.72.215.218
yuri.mu.nu. 14400 IN A 69.72.215.226

;; Query time: 845 msec
;; SERVER: 10.1.1.15#53(10.1.1.15)
;; WHEN: Fri Feb 24 14:08:05 2006
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 113
That's exactly how it should be. We have two DNS servers (as it says), and blog.mu.nu lives at that IP address.

The DNS checker at squish.net (a wonderful tool), returns:

Results

50.0% of queries will be returned by 69.72.215.218 (ns1.mu.nu)

blog.mu.nu. 14400 IN A 69.72.215.227

50.0% of queries will be returned by 69.72.215.226 (ns2.mu.nu)

blog.mu.nu. 14400 IN A 69.72.215.227

Again, no errors, both DNS servers working, correct result returned.

Anyone out there who is DNS savvy, could you take a quick look at what you are seeing from your point of view and leave a comment. I think that the problem is due to flaky DNS caching servers being run by various ISPs, but I'd like to be sure.

Update: I thought I'd managed to duplicate the problem on my wireless internet, but before I could do any real diagnosis it started working again. Damn.

Sorry About The Fruitcakes

If you are getting a "fruitcake error" when trying to log in to Movable Type, or when adding a post or a comment or something, it's a problem relating to MySQL, and I'm working on it.

Update: It may be to do with the current spam-storm. It's all getting zapped, but that seems to be generating errors on MySQL, because Fluffy keeps killing the comment script while it is querying the database.

I've put something in place to prevent this from causing problems while I do a bit more digging.

Update: Found it. It was indeed the spam-storm. Over 100,000 spams in the past couple of hours, and no sign of letting up. Bleh.

All under control now.

Update: Currently clocking between 600 and 1000 spams per minute. All being rejected.

Update: Confirmed. Spammer smacked, errors stopped. Yay. Bed time.
