About DNS Management
I'm about ready to unpack my stuff in my new blogsite, but can't figure out why I can't get DNS management to work. I gather that one has to use DNS management to preserve all the links to specific posts as one migrates from the old site. I've created two Cname records, one for www.demosophia.com and another for demosophia.com. I'm not sure what to do for the A record, since the blog doesn't appear to have a unique IP address. Can I just ignore the A record? If not do I have to use URL forwarding instead of DNS management?
At the moment I've disabled URL forwarding, but my domain name still points to some broken page in the Blogspot domain, which just shows a lonely "ok" in the upper lefthand corner. What am I doing wrong?

Ah.
Here's the trick: Don't do any of that.
Just "park" the .com domain on the .mu.nu domain (there's a separate function for this). And set the DNS servers with your registrar to ns.mu.nu and ns2.mu.nu.
That way you don't need URL forwarding either, because CPanel will set up the virtual hosts to handle both domain names.

Well that sounds magical, but where's the function for that? You mean in the MT setup somewhere? Who hosts this magical function, and how do I access it?
And set the DNS servers with your registrar to ns.mu.nu and ns2.mu.nu.
Do you mean the Cname registers? I'm a bit lost. I can certainly set up the Cname registes as you suggest. Does that automatically "park" the domain in munuviana? Or do I need to do something separantely?

OK I updated the Name Servers to those you indicated above. Apparently an "NS Record" is just for a subdomain, but instead I replaced the name servers that the registrar defaulted to, to ns.mu.nu and ns2.mu.nu. Once that was done the default nameservers were deleted. But I still don't know what "parking" means. Maybe I don't need to?
Posted by: Demosophist @ at April 09, 2006 02:03 AM

In CPanel, there's a "Parked Domains" option. That lets you just tell the system that demosophia.com should be treated exactly the same as demosophia.mu.nu.
Anything else is more work and probably won't work as you intended.
If you like, I can do it for you.

Pixy:
I understand the concept behind what you're saying about "parking" .com on .mu.nu , but I can't find a function that lets me do that. I've sent a query to the registrar (Dotster). At the moment when I attempt to connect to demosophia.com I get a message that the "page cannot be dsplayed." I've changed the name servers, so apparently this "parking" thing is all that's left to do.

What's a "CPanel?" I have a hunch that would help a lot. I've looked in "configuration settings" and can't seem to find anything like that.

Pixy:
I guess CPanel is short for Control Panel, and because either you or I can change it I'm also guessing that this is the MT Control Panel. However, I still can't find an option for parking the domain. So if you can change it, go ahead. Just tell me where it is on the control panel. (Probably something really obvious, huh?)
Thanks.

D:
The cPanel Pixy's referring to is the control panel for your site hosting, not the control panel for your MT software. To access it, go to http://demosophia.mu.nu:2082.
This will bring you to the login page for your cPanel, where you will see myriad options for customising your hosting. It's also where you administer your domain's email, for example.
Note that your Cpanel name and password may not be the same as your MT login. If it's different, you should have been told what it is in the initial email that gave you your setup info.
Once in the cPanel, you will see the icon for domain parking Pixy was talking about above - top row, 3rd icon from the left.

Sorry, D, I'm so used to doing things one way, which may not be easiest for others. The other way to get to the cPanel login is

That might be easier than having to remember the port number.

Pixy:
Sorry, there appears to be an issue that isn't resolved. Although demosophia.com will go directly to demosophia.mu.nu www.demosophia.com still goes to some defunct blogger site. I tried adding www.demosophia.com to the "parked" list, but CPanel won't let me do it, claiming that demosophia.com is "already on the list."
So, how do I get www.demosophia.com to point to munuviana?
Posted by: Demosophist @ at April 12, 2006 02:22 AM

D,
If your domain is registered with GoDaddy or Network Solutions you'll need to make the change in your account there.
If you've already made the change it may take a day or two for the changes to filter through the DNS servers on your ISP.
It's primarily the domain registrar that'll handle where your domain points. From there if you want to make changes to where the www and other subdomains point you can make those changes in the c-panel.
If you'll let us know who your domain is registered with we may be able to provide play-by-play destructions that'll help you get it setup.

Shadow blogging?
So anyway, I was reading through a comments thread at Random Pensees and noticed the name "Christina". Not sure if I knew who that was, I put my cursor over the name to see the URL. It was a .mu.nu blog that I'd never heard of; Just *dot* Christina.
Turns out that it's the same Christina who used to the blog at Feisty Repartee. She's been blogging again since October, but she's not the .mu.nu blogroll. Eeep!

Need Help to Transfer blog
Hi everyone. Phin has been helping me transfer my blog (http://gmroper.com) to http://gmroper.mu.nu but he has a new family member and hasn't been able to help. Can anyone help me with the transfer? I can set up someone to get into my .com (mt 3.2) if there is someon that can help transfer the archives and current stuff. I'm paid up for April at the old site, but really am a dunce when it comes to knowing enough to make the transfer. If anyone can help, it will be greatly appreciated.

I sort of have a similar problem, except that I no longer have access to my blog on Typepad. However, before surrendering access I archived and saved all the posts. I don't think the comments were included. The format isn't all that important to transfer, but I could use some advice on setting that up.
The main thing I'm concerned about is that I'm not sure how to get DNS management to point to the address so that people typing in my domain name will be directed to the mu.nu site. I've set up the Cnames for demosophia.com and www.demosophia.com but do I also need an A record? If so, do I have a unique IP address or does it just go to the front page. If I ping demosophia.mu.nu all I get is 64.72.215.219. Should I use URL forwarding instead of DNS management?

Both addresses you mention are taking me directly to the cPanel login screen. (The reason for the :2082 is that's the port through which cPanel is accessed. The other address is essentially just a forwarder to that port.)
Are you still having problems? If so, you might want to try clearing Firefox's cache.

Sure. The RSS feed is just another template, so make a copy of it and specify the category you want. Or make it an alternate category archive template.

File Dump!
Got something you want to share? Getting into podcasts or vlogging, or want to upload some music you've written? Or maybe you're ready to unleash your own Linux distro on an unsuspecting world?
But you held off because you didn't want to use up all your bandwidth and get Pixy mad with you?
Well, now there's a solution!
filedump.mu.nu. It's an easy-to-use BitTorrent tracker, which means that for popular files it uses a thousand times less bandwidth on the munu servers. You don't even need a BitTorrent client to use it, but you can if you prefer. The software is called
Broadcast Machine, and they want to be to vlogging what... Uh, what something else was to something else.
Currently there are no files there, but you can see a working installation
on my blog.
If you'd like to use it, email me and I'll set you up with an account.

Can this be used literally as a file dump? just a place to upload files and link to them? Or is it necessary to use all the bells and whistles?
I'm not sure I have the time or the patience to manage another site.
or should I not be worried about my occassional 3-4 mb podcast files that maybe 5 people download?

Pixy,
I guess I am one of the podcast bandwidth offenders. Sorry.
I'm a little fuzzy on the whole torrent thing and RSS is just something that happens so I don't think much about it. My question is, would I be able to use the Filedump site without altering my podcast process? In other words would it be as simple as just uploading to a different server and putting a different url in the software that generates the RSS feed that iTunes is linked to?
Steve

If you only have a couple of dozen listeners, it's not a problem. But if you are interested, I can set up an account for you.
It's very easy, and it does generate RSS automatically and work with iTunes. At least, it's supposed to work with iTunes; I haven't tried it yet.
I'll write up a little intro to BitTorrent to explain it, because it's a bit different to old-fashioned file sharing.

CPanelX gives my current month's bandwidth at 1887.83 Megabytes. That's with one 5MB podcast.
The bandwith stats show that as 19% of my limit!
I guess I should have checked before assuming I was melting the server!!!
Since my podcasts don't seem to be a big issue. let me figure out what's involved in telling iTunes I've moved the RSS feed and I'll let you know.

Thanks, Pixy. I think many got blacklisted now since I spend a good portion of today getting them there.
Posted by: Ogre @ at March 21, 2006 10:20 PM

No worries.
The way Snark works is it performs a statistical analysis of all the trackbacks received by the munu blogs, and anyone who is sending too many trackbacks gets flagged as a spammer. Depending on the volume and the time frame, this means that further pings from them get blocked either temporarily or permanently. It tracks both domain names and the IP addresses of spammers, and it blocks 99% of trackbacks even before they get to the blacklist.
But - it only works when someone is spamming the whole of munu. If they spam just one blog, and it trickles in overnight, Snark never works out that it's spam.
So it's not perfect, but it has blocked two million trackbacks in four months, which is something we can all be thankful for.

Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at March 22, 2006 12:23 AM

Ah. You should be getting a lot less spam now.
One of the options in Snark!™ is to block trackbacks to old posts, but the definition of "old" was itself somewhat old. I've updated it now, which should stop about 80% of the spam you're getting. MT Blacklist also helps, of course, but it's good to stop the spam as early as possible.

While I was messing around, I also fixed the problem with 2LDs like onex.be and pizdets.be, so it collapses those domains properly and blocks the whole thing, and retroactively collapsed the existing blacklist.

The problem being that it should take out the whole of .onex.be, but not .com.au. The rule I applied is if the top level domain is two letters, only block the second level domain if it is more than three letters. So .com.au or .co.uk are safe, but the weasels at onex.be and pizdets.be are toast.
Of course, the other filter rules (age, volume, IP address etc) usually zap them anyway, but all those throwaway domains were clogging up the blacklist and slowing things down.

Awesome, thanks for the help!
The two big ones that were hitting me were xxxxx (dot) proboards ### (.com) and pubxx.something.com. Once I figured out the format to blog xxx (dot) proboards### (.com), that picked up a lot of them -- but they were also spaced out a few minutes apart to get past the timing check on the spam blocker, those bastards.

Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
Yikes! I need to go on an "uploaded file diet" or something!
Pixy, would you be so kind as to bump me up? I promise not to be such a "bandwidth hog" in the future.

Thanks! Hey, other than keeping the large photos to a minimum, any advice on how to conserve the bandwidth? I read a post a little ways down about having problems with having your graphics linked and google cached. How does that affect it?
Pardon the cyber-ignorance, here.

In CPanel you can prevent people hotlinking your images, which is a good idea.
Other than that, the best bet is not to have any readers.

Wordpress
I got bored on Saturday night and decided to give Wordpress a try. Awhile back I tried it, and was not impressed. That was easily a few years ago. Now I am much more enthused about it. It seems cleaner and smoother, and the themes are better managed. Pixy, might WP be a solution to our woes if Minx doesn't pan out? Just a thought, but I for one am beginning to hate with a passion reminiscent of John Kerry the bloody spammers. Not only the comment spammers, but also the trackback ones. Blacklist seems to be faulty, and Wordpress seems to have some nice plugins to combat it.
In any case if anyone wants to see my small set-up check it out here:
http://weaver.nickqueen.com
I have it to where you need to register to visit the site since I am posting snippets of a book I'm working on there. Wordpress can have many levels of protection in that regard, down to having to register to post comments. Stop by and take a look!
PS
As for the Munu shirt, can I lobby for a big shirt, cause I'm a big guy, and I do mean in the 4x or so range. If you make it, I'll buy it and show my Munu love.
And nothing vilgar people, ie Madfish! I'd like to be able to wear this in public without being trampled by family, friends, or the decency police! ;-)

WordPress is good, but it doesn't support multiple blogs, and having 250 copies of it running would not be fun.
But it is at least an alternative.

Rebuilding Problem
Why, when I attempt to rebuild the entire site, do I get stuck with Individual Archives 1-100 on the counter? Is my site rebuilding? Or is there something that is preventing that from happening? The same thing happens when I try to rebuild Individual Archives -- but not any other rebuild configuration.

Hmm. Sounds like it could be an Apache timeout issue. I'll tweak the timeout settings a bit, hang on...
Okay, I've adjusted the timeout settings, and I've also tweaked MT's rebuild settings. Try it now.

T-Shirts Are Cool
But, like, we could use a flag, too.
I pledge allegiance, to the flag
Of the United Blogs of Munuviana
And to the psychoses, for which it stands

Since munuvians range in origin from all over the world perhaps something non-political would be more appropriate.
No offence, Madfish Willie.

Google Serches
I get a huge amount of google serches for some rather popular images that I have put up over the last year and a half. Is there any way to "block" the google search as they eat up a huge amount of my bandwidth....

I think if you go to google's main page, there might be a link on how to prevent the googlebots from archiving your pages and images.

You have to have this in robots.txt:
User-agent: Googlebot-Image
Disallow: /
I'm not a Munuvian, so I don't know if you can do this. It might be a central file for everyone, and I'm thinking most people wouldn't want to exclude it.
Details here:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/remove.html#images
and

Yep, you can update robots.txt (and .htaccess, if you need to). It's a separate file for each blog, so you can do anything you like.
