Blockquote styles
Hey all....
I checked all the help topics at right, but I didn't see anything related to adding a bit of pizzazz to
blockquotes. Like, for instance, changing the background color of a blockquote, the font, etc.
Any hints?

Hey,
I have done what you are trying to do. I went in to my StyleSheet Template and made the change there. I scrolled almost all the way down to .posts blockquote. There is where you will find the background, border and so on.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, but I cannot locate the word "blockquote" anywhere within my stylesheet template let alone the terms ".posts blockquote."
Is it a code I have to add instead of modify? If so, what and where?
Thanks much.

Kinda cool to be able to address a comment to the Colossus!
Your current CSS (Stylesheet) doesn't contain any styling for blockquotes, so you'll need to add it. You can put it pretty much anywhere, but my suggestion would be to group it with the other styles that affect post text display. In your case, my suggestion would be to insert it just above the styling for the calendar elements.
Here's the code for blockquotes for this blog (Munuviana) so you can see the effect the different parameters create:
blockquote {
margin:15px 12px 15px 12px;
padding:8px 10px 8px 10px;
border: 1px solid #C3A348;
border-left:8px solid #D7C286;
border-right:8px solid #D7C286;
color:#000000;
background:#7F3E7;
}
You can paste that into your stylesheet, then adjust the individual parameters to your needs. Note that in cases where there are four numbers, they are affecting each side of the 'box' separately, and the numbers always apply in this order: top, right, bottom, left.
Margin = the space between the 'box' and the sides of the text column/space between the preceding and following text.
Padding = the space between the borders of the 'box' and the text inside it.
Border = self-explanatory. The "#C3A348;" at the end is the hex code for the colour of the line.
Border-left (etc) = the opportunity to make the lines different thicknesses on each side (optional).
Color = colour of the text inside the 'box'.
Background = obvious, again the code refers to the hexadecimal name of the colour. (There's a basic hex colour reference here or you can search for more via Google. Many image editing applications list the hex codes in their colour pickers/palettes as well, if you use one of those.)
Paul
PS After making changes, don't forget to save your template and then rebuild just your Index files to see the results of your changes. (No need to "Rebuild All", as that will unnecessarily load the server.)

Sorry, an addendum to the above addendum...
Once you are completely happy with your new blockquotes, should you wish to apply the style to all your all your old posts, you will need to do one last "Rebuild All". But wait until you're sure you're satisfied, so you only need to do that process once.

Trouble Accessing Site
All day today I have had difficulty signing on to Movable Type and even viewing MuNu sites (mine and others). I was able to sign on this morning, but for most of the day was unable to. Just got on now after trying time and time again. Any ideas why this happened and will it happen again? I didn't go to work today, so I don't know if it's just an issue with my home setup. Thanks!

I changed our DNS settings yesterday, so it's probably something to do with that. I looks like it went smoothly, but the nature of DNS (and the fact that most ISPs run broken DNS servers) means that there's always a problem somewhere.
Let me know if it happens again.

Unusual Spam?
I've received five comments, all on old posts, this morning from someone/thing calling itself "Shari Smith," leaving "http://www.google.com" as a site name, and stuff like this in the actual comment body:
9ffd3bce74633d1b6f269fd6d32b79d6
I love the look of hexadecimal in the morning! No, seriously: What is this and how do I get rid of it, save by manual deletion? I obviously can't blacklist by site name, email addy, or comment text . . . or can I?
Anyone else have something like this occur?

I've received quite a few of these. As far as I can see, they are simply poison pills.
The idea is that you get one, blacklist it, and then get annoyed because now you've blacklisted Google. So you stop using the blacklist, and the spammers can spam you again.
Spammers are vermin.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at February 22, 2006 01:57 AM

Ilyka, in addition to an attempt to poison the blacklist, this is probably also what I call signpost spam. The spammer can come back in several days/weeks and do a Google search for that unique, unusual string of characters. Any blogs they find it on are clearly not being swept for spam, and so become open targets for massive follow-up spam (or being sold as part of a list of spammable addresses.

Never suspected Pixy's "poison pill" theory, which I am hereby calling "Thank Goodness No One Ever Recruited This One Bimbo I Kind of Know (And Pixy Does Too) to mu.nu, Because She Would So Totally Blacklist Google, No, I Mean She'd Do it Every DAY."
(I know it's long, but I LIKE IT!)
Paul, the signpost thing is what I figured they must be up to, more or less. Annoying! Luckily I caught these quick and could delete them pretty painlessly, but if they hit me with 20 or 50 of those [shudders] . . . .

Paul - good point. I hadn't twigged to that being the reason for the hexadecimal string, but you're almost certainly correct.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at February 22, 2006 04:56 AM

Ilyka, if you do get hit with more of this, are you aware of how to use the Blacklist to remove them all at once? (Not by blacklisting, just as a tool for quick removal?)

It's pretty easy - do a comment spam search in Blacklist but leave the search field blank. It will return all comments that you have access to. Just click on the bogus ones and wipe them out at one time.
Bump up the number of comments field if you don't get all of the items you're expecting. The "Last xx" is the last xx of all mu.nu comments,not just the ones on your blog.

Pixy and/or others who know the answer:
I'm thinkin bout adding some contributors to my blog. If I just add an author or two with permission to post to my blog, that's cool, right? That won't affect anything else happening in Munuviana, I don't think.
Let me know if there is a special procedure for this.

C-Panel? What is C-Panel?
Ooookay.
Some two and a half years ago Pixy telled me how to upload mp3s. I remember about the FTP an' all, but I have no idea where to send it. Those emails are lo-o-o-o-ng gone.
Back in September I tried to get info on where to send an mp3 of a nifty New Orleans-y ditty that I wanted to play on my website, but, for some reason, never got a response. Now that Mardi Gras is underway, I would like to have this music uploaded. I emailed Stephen Macklin (since he's posted a few podcasts) to ask him where to send the mp3.
He told to go to C-panel, type in my user name and password and go from there. I went to the URL he sent me and typed in my usual .mu.nu user name and password but couldn't get in. I then clicked on the "forgot your password?" button and was told that a new password would be emailed to me. Nope. No email has come.
Soooooooo, what is this "C-panel" thingie of which y'all speak and how do I get there? I see nothing in the sidebar about it. Thanks!

Your CPanel password is usually different from your Movable Type password. You'll need to request it again from Pixy if you've lost the original emails.
The "email password" option sends a copy to your default hosting email address, not the one you entered in Movable Type. MT and the hosting control panel - CPanel - are completely different things.

Blacklist Meltdown.
It would seem that someone has blacklisted the entire English language AGAIN. It would seem they have taken the extra precautionary step of blacklisting the entire alphabet as well since a test comment of just the letter "u" was blocked.
I don't think I have ever actually blacklisted anything precisely to prevent causing something like this. Does everyone understand that the blacklist is universal to all of Munuviana and not specific to their individual blogs? If you screw up, you screw us all.
Please use the blacklist with care and caution.

Stephen, it may be that you already cleaned out the offending entries in the Blacklist, but if not, I suspect this was a repeat of an old gem - Greg had blacklisted the period [.].
Folks, almost all of you that are putting entries in the Blacklist are doing so entirely incorrectly. As a result, your entries are NOT protecting other MuNu users, or even yourselves, AT ALL, and are, as Stephen explains, causing disastrous problems for all other MuNuvians.
If you have not specifically studied the correct format for Blacklist entries, DO NOT add things to the Blacklist. You are wasting your time, and causing ridiculous bloat to the Blacklist in the process (which takes more time and processing power for each comment.)

Posted by: Cardinal Martini @ at February 19, 2006 07:43 PM

Cardinal, if you log into your CPanel, you will see an icon named IP Deny Manager. Double-clicking it gives you a window with a box to enter the IP address of the person you wish to block.
Note that it's quite easy for a determined human viewer to get around this type of block, but it does work against someone who isn't tech-savvy. (Unless they use dialup Internet access, which assigns a new IP address each time they log in, nullifying this kind of block.)
The simple truth is, a website is a publically accessible location. The only way to change that is to use a password-protected blog or posts and only give the password to authorized readers (and hope they don't give it out). If you are going to post on the web, you have no control over who will read it. Accept that fact, or don't post.

Panties Destroyed, Part 2
Hey all,

Hi Alex. We upgraded to PHP 4.4 when we moved servers, and I believe that global variables are now turned off by default.
Posted by: Pixy Misa @ at February 20, 2006 07:01 AM

Alex when PHP was upgraded, there were some changes in the way variables are handled, mainly for security reasons. The skinning portion had to be rewritten to allow handle the way the variables are handled and how the cookies are being set.
I could check this out for you, but since your site was done by the Moxie Duo, I'd ask you check with them first. Designers invest quite a bit of time developing skinning routines and as designer I wouldn't want to go poking around their code without permission first.

Phin,
I did check with the Moxie Duo, and Joelle said that the only reason she could figure that my skins weren't working was because of the global variables. This is all greek to me, but I don't think she'd mind if you took a look. Thanks!

Shameless Offer to Help MuNuers Increase Ego
A few of you may not know The Jawa's little super-sekret: any mu.nu post that I link will automatically be added to the Google News feed.
For instance, you write a post called

It won't generate tons of traffic, but you might be able to piss some one off. And isn't that what blogging is really all about?

you should have it already up and running, and it should be http://ex-donkey.mu.nu/index.rdf
To make it auto discoverable add this to your main index template:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="http://ex-donkey.mu.nu/index.rdf" />
There should be a similar line in the template already relating to your CSS, put this right after that....

Mailman Weirdness
Hey Pixy,
ever since we moved to the new servers, Mailman has been behaving a bit oddly. I get notifications that there are posts I need to moderate, but when I go to the listserv, there's no message there. I get a reminder about 9 emails I need to moderate every day, but no messages. No archives to be found where I expect to find them. And so on.

The Troll That Would Not Die
I have a troll that will not go away.
He's using proxies so he can't be banned.
I've set my close comments code to 1 day, and I just delete the ones he makes on the few open posts.
He thinks he's funny, making fun of my mother who has Alzheimer's Disease, with comments like this:
LOL the midnight foray with *my* gym teacher went real well, except eric's mom was there and we think she bumped her head too hard against the locker as Coach fucked her, cuz she can't remember it too well
It doesn't bother me that he's making fun of my mother, he's not saying anything that I haven't heard before in "Yo Mama" jokes.
But he is irritating.
So is there some other way to get rid of this turd that I don't know about?

Vince:
I'm really sorry to hear about your Mom. Here's wishing both you and her strength to deal with whatever is to come.
As far as your troll is concerned, it's pretty much impossible to block a determined human commenter. You're only real option is to social-engineer him.
The only reason he's doing it is because it garners him attention, and a reaction. Unfortunately, with 2 posts about him in a couple of days, you've already given him both, but I bet you can still get rid of him.
Rule #1 is to utterly ignore him - no posts, so snark in the comments, no reference to him at all. A brief email to your regular commenters to ignore him would also be in order. DON"T post such a request on your site - that just proves to him that he's disrupting you.
Rule #2 is to (continue to) delete his droppings. Don't rush to do it the minute he posts though; that also proves to him he's got your attention. Just go through once a day or so and nuke everything. (You can use MT Blacklist to do this quite quickly and painlessly. Leave a comment here if you want me to run through the fastest process real quick.)
If he proves true to type, he'll get even more ridiculous for a little while the more effectively he's marginalised, then he'll just drop out of sight.
I know this all sounds easier said than done, but as long as he thinks he's got even a few seconds of your attention, he'll keep playing for more. Drop him like a hot rock.
Good luck, You shouldn't have to be dealing with this kind of tripe, but humans will be schmucks, I guess.

have. I've got the auto ping configured properly according to their instructions (http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping) and I've got the blog claimed at their site perfectly.
The only thing that I can think of is that they're not happy with me listing the URL as 'countrypundit.mu.nu', because I've seen it on other links as 'www.countrypundit.mu.nu'. Can anyone help me with this? I bet it's simple and being overlooked by me.

CP,
What's your email address? I know a guy at Technorati. I asked him to take a look at my blog when I was having the same problem you are having. He had it fixed the next morning. I will send you his personal email.

I've had the same problem myself. It keeps telling me that my blog hasn't been updated in over 100 days even though I have it set to automatically ping Technorati. I've even went to Technorati's ping page on their site and it still hasn't worked. My email address is everyman.blog@gmail.com. Any help would be appreciated, SR.

RSS feeds in blogs? Howdidodee?
I'm not exactly down with this "RSS" contraption you darn kids are using these days.
::shakes finger::
I want to add a "newsfeed" that is auto-updated on both my MuNu blog and my Blogger blog.
I kinda like this one: http://www.humantraffickingsearch.net/
I tried to view their source code and just paste what they had but I guess it's not that easy.
Any idears?

You've already got an xml feed for your Munu blog:
http://whatsakyer.mu.nu/index.xml
Blogger uses an Atom feed. You turn it on somewhere in the configuration area.

I think he's saying that he wants to display an RSS feed from somewhere else on his blog.
You can do that... But I'm not sure what the easiest way is.

It would be VERY cool to get an RSS feed to display like that....

How does Charles (www.littlegreenfootballs.com) do it with his world/national news feeds that he has on the right side of his blog? They may not be dynamic like "http://www.humantraffickingsearch.net/" but even a static one would be decent.

I've used the "RSS/RDF Converter: Convert a Feed" before, it works pretty good. You basically plug in the RSS URL in and it generates html for you to plug into your website. http://www.rss-to-javascript.com/p/138.html

Destroyed Panties
Hey, y'all.
I don't know what has happened to my blog.
My comments have trickled down to...none. I have made sure that my preferences are checked so that it should send comments to my inbox.
Also, none of my skins work anymore. We switched over, I think, and now they are NIL.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.
My panties will be grateful.

I haven't been getting emails of comments for quite some time. Or maybe I just haven't gotten any comments.

It seems that every skinning script in the universe has bugs in it that causes them to break under PHP 4.4. I don't remember offhand what the fix was, but there is a fix.

Stephen - Good to know that I'm not alone in this...
Pixy - would you suggest I contact the designer?
Thanks for letting me know, guys!

Pixy: Mine was broke for a little while too, but now it's fixed again... although I think it might have been something I did when I was tinkering around. Anyway... it's working now if anyone needs one that is still working,
