Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

These are Ranger (light brown) and Carmelo (chocolate color)They are Pekingese litter mates. We adopted them a couple months apart. Ranger is definitely the dominant male. Carmelo is happy to leave him to it. It gives Carmelo time to think. He’s constantly investigating things and trying to figure out how they work.

We discovered they love watching dog agility competitions while visiting my parents.

The cat is Grace. She followed me to our cabin in Alabama on Easter Sunday while I was walking Ranger and Carmelo. The vet estimated her at about 6 months old. She needed immediate medical care. $1200 later we had a cat. The dogs and cat get along well. Ranger loves to chase her and she loves to pounce on them at random intervals.

CavScoutCoastie

Thanks for introducing us to the personalities of these endearing pets. We might not have guessed from the great photos. It's nice that Ranger and Carmelo have found an activity that they enjoy while visiting their grandparents.

Gracie is a beautiful cat, even if she does have a feisty streak. Thanks for rescuing her.

8 So many beautiful animals. Thank you.

I wanted to update everyone on not my cats, Trumpy, Snowflake and Starry - their mother.

They stayed with us for almost 4 months. Mom passed away in early January. My friends were in Mexico so I still kept the cats, which was the original plan.

I was a wreck and just 'enjoying' my first break in 9.5 years. The cats' food bowls were never empty. My friends came home.

There was one night. I just wanted to go to my room and watch stupid crap. But all three cats, and our dog Ralphy, just kept going in and out from 6 to 11 pm. And it was really cold, especially for our area.

It was finally 'Night-Night.' Everyone was inside.

To be continued in part 2.

9 Reef is still settling in. He has some stuff going on under the hood I still have not worked out. Ajax was always 'Go, Go, GO!' but Reef seems to be afraid of going through doorways. He'll just sit down and stare at me. I have got him over the main door to the apartment and he is now doing fine there, but like going into the garage he just sits down and does not want to move. It is an odd reaction in a puppy in my experience.

10 Now that I think about it - why is calling someone “Chicken” a synonym for “Cowardly”? Chickens don’t have a lot of defense against predators. I don’t know how tough they are.

But they are a noble animal, I think. And have kept a lot of humans alive, and continue to do so.

Posted by: Common Tater at March 01, 2025 03:21 PM (rPV7A)

11 Yes. Hugh Hefner the rooster is very handsome more handsome than the original man, IMO, but he probably needs some chicks around. Maybe they wisely stayed someplace warmer.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 01, 2025 03:21 PM (vH+pq)

12 He also seems to be growing like a weed. Made a calculation and went ahead and got the large breed puppy food. He has been pounding down between 3 and 4 cups a day, every day. When I took him to the vet that first week, he weighed 10 lbs. He is a fair bit heavier now.

13 Continued from Part 1.

It was 'Night-Night.'

Everyone was in.

The cats were amazingly well behaved for outdoor cats moving inside, or trying inside, for so long.

Snowflake was the 'trouble-maker' meaning that I had 4 cords chewed over 4 months. Not bad. Tablet cords and one for a bed that my friend, their owner fixed. But I kept bedroom doors closed so she wouldn't get in trouble and damage stuff.

I have excellent hearing and swore I heard water running 2am. I went to the bathroom and Trumpy was there on the counter. The faucet, my Mom loved, was an open faucet where water would move down an open ledge. Trumpy LOVED that. And he knew how to turn the faucets on and liked to watch. Very minor issue but I'd keep bathroom doors closed at night...

The kids mother Starry, who with her sister Twilight started all the insanity, came inside in December. Starry and I are close. The first cats I ever took care of and I was lovingly ambitious.

15 That chihuahua in By-Tor's picture has seen terrible things.

Posted by: NR Pax at March 01, 2025 03:34 PM (lXCUP)

16 Continued from part 2..

Starry loved inside! Girl went out only a few times a week, was happy on her chair, Ralphy would chase her for some reason once in a while but she knew how to survive. No damage at all, beautiful cat.

But we had the night of in and out. The least sexiest form of in and out. Everyone was in. Doors closed. I was always listening for Mom, that part of my brain was still very active.

I could hear the cats racing around downstairs. I was fine with that. I knew they wouldn't do damage. The 6am wakeup calls with Snowflake scratching on my bedroom door went away after telling her bedtime.

But that one day, all of them were in and out until 11pm, running at night, waking me at 6am and then wanting to go in and out from 8am until 11am or so. It was too much.

I can never develop a life with all that going on.

So they have been outside since then. On really cold days. Bit I wanted to keep them inside during the coldest days and they still headed out.

Continued on part 4 .....sorry

17 I used to have a rooster named Timid Tina who looked a lot like Hugh Hefner up there. Don't ask me how he got to be named Timid Tina, I forget.

Tina wasn't really timid, he was a homicidal maniac and he had ninja moves. He would pace and scratch around all alone, muttering to himself like Travis Bickle. "You talkin' to ME??" One time he went after a man I knew, and the guy screamed like a little girl.

I had to admire Tina, because he would fight with the other rooster, a big Red named Greaser. Greaser would pound the tar out of Tina, and Tina never learned to back down. Finally, Greaser broke Tina's right spur off at the base, so it would never grow back. Shortly after that, Tina used his remaining spur to put out Greaser's right eye.

Tina was a pain in the ass, but he was a gorgeous bird. I ended up eating Greaser, but Tina died of natural causes.

21 Continued from part 3...

Trumpy and Snowflake each put on several pounds living with me after Mom died. I turned Snowflake into a very fluffy Snowball.

They are outside now. My friends handle their feeding. They stay around our house a lot. I just recovered my computer room and the cats will be by the window when I'm there.

When I let the dog Ralphy out through the back patio door, the cats like to rest on our outdoor air conditioner furnace unit. They come by then and I pet them. They jump inside a lot and get extra love.

And weighed.

They are getting back in shape.

My entire life is still up in the air. I don't know what will happen next year. But the cats still are around and loved.

Oh, and a cat we call Garfield, the father of several litters, likes to stay on the porch. Never gave dude food, water or anything. But apparently this house is welcoming to cats.

You're all caught up.

Sorry for the self indulgent novel.

Posted by: Common Tater at March 01, 2025 03:21 PM (rPV7A)

I don't know. I would guess it's because while chickens can get aggressive and attack / defend, especially in groups, when they're really scared their bird brain takes over and they like splay out their wings, crouch down, and freeze like idiots. Which is the worst possible thing you can do when a predator is trying to eat you.

27 Other than feeding my horse time has consisted of using a handheld cold laser on Tanza's fetlock 5-6 days/week He managed to fracture his sesamoid bones. I bought the laser because there seemed to be no improvement the first few weeks after he was x-rayed. He is gradually getting better, and I can't say for sure the laser is the reason, but I used it 5-6 times on a thumb joint that was bugging me and it helped that so I think the laser does help, but it sure is not a quick fix.

36 Afternoon, Pet Folken,

HH the rooster was floundering around in that snow we had in Jan., huh? I didn't see any chickens stalking around in the snowfields, but while the snow was still drifting down, Miss Linda scooped up Dagny La Siberienne, the little cat of the triple fur coat, and carried her outside for a moment. Dagny let out multiple howls of protest! Whether they came from being outside her normal safe space, or the sudden cold, or the flakes landing on her face and fur, we don't know. The expedition didn't last long.

We didn't try it with big black Stirling. He doesn't have the thick coat. Plus after Dagny's reaction we doubted he would enjoy being out in the cold either.

44 Our animals are always trying new things, especially when they're young. Stirling is going to be three years old this month. Recently he's discovered how much fun it is to jump from the dinette table to a clear spot on my encyclopedia bookcase, and then to soar up to the top of the nearby tall bookcase. The first time I saw him up there I was worried he couldn't get down -- his launch space was kind of small for a landing spot. I lifted him down. The next time I saw him up there, I turned my back, and in a moment, Thump! and he was down.

Dagny is a not a leaper like that. Her legs are powerful, but still kind of short.

45 Pynchon drives me crazy sometimes wanting to go outside so much. I do find it somewhat amusing when he either peeks his head outside the door and hears the winds and decides today is not on outdoor day , or goes out for one minute when the temperature is low and races back in. FenSpouse and I -along with a friend -feed a colony of fixed stray cats a couple of times a week. Her husband fixed up boxes with doors they can get in and out of and it has blankets in there. All things considered I think it's somewhat comfortable ,but I often say to Pynchon, " You are very fortunate you are an indoor cat, not like the ones a couple of miles away."

Our social compact is, I call him a good boy and he wags his tail as he goes through the gate.

Lately, I have been waking him up from a sound sleep, just to walk on his very sore hips, into a bitterly cold backyard.

He still wags his tail every time. I believe he has held up his end of the social compact 5,500 times in a row!

60 I raised a litter of Brittany Spaniels that were sired by the Field Trials runner-up to the national champion.

One of the puppies came out all white, and significantly larger than all of the other puppies.

Of course, he acquired the name, Moby Dick.

He and his sister were awesome quail dogs. Their tag team efforts (honoring points) in heavy cover were legendary among my hunting buddies.

61 Cat names? Usually from some trait of theirs, but not always. Rusty was dubbed that because of his red coat and squeaky little voice. Mom named :i'l Bit, I guess, because she was so small. Tuna Fish the little tuxedo shorthair liked that food in particular.

Arizona? Big, sandy, and prickly like a cactus.

Marie-Antoinette was given that name by her rescuer before Linda got her, but it was clear she thought she was feline royalty. Oreo was pre-named -- a little tuxedo cat, but she was little and round and sweet too. Tatiana Romanova got that from the James Bond heroine; it was the only pretty Russian name I knew. Chekov came pre-labeled from his breeder. Wolf I named because he was big and rangy and social, and wolves do come in black.

Stirling was named for a pipe tobacco I liked the name of; and Dagny from the AoS poster "dagny, first of her name."

69 CavScoutCoastie. Bless you for getting Gracie fixed up after she followed you home to the cabin. And she, Ranger and Carmelo are all very good looking critters.

70 Are you trying to tell me that Hollywood is NOT a reliable source for basic facts?

Have heard that a parrot on a pirate's shoulder was an early warning system to avoid sneaky rear attacks.

72 If allowed on your shoulder, your parrot *will* poop on you.
Posted by: Commissar of Plenty and Lysenkoism

They NEVER show that in the pirate movies.

Keeping the captain's uniform looking pristine and free of parrot poop is one of the cabin boy's most important tasks. It's just not usually shown on-camera.

73 “Kevin” was the name of an orange tabby of a friend of mine, the classic cat if there ever was one. I found the name comical for some reason. And it looked like a Kevin too, if that makes sense.

74 Hugh Hefner is a looker, isn't he?

A surprising lack of shrinkage, considering.

Hopefully unlike the character Ophelia, the cat didn't go crazy because her father was killed by her brother.

I think Fortinbras sound like a good name for a tough cat.

80 5 pm.

The cats have invaded. I opened the door for Ralphy and Trumpy jumped in. I love Dude so I'm not chasing him down. He's lived here. He searched the house and tactically decided under Dad's chair was the place to be.

Snowflake came in as Ralphy was outside. She came in to check out the house.

Cats -2: Humans - 1: Dog - 1

Trumpy is still under the chair. Snowflake was scared by Ralphy and is outside by the patio door. I'll let her in for a few minutes of affection. But then put them outside.

It's 2 versus 2,

I like Shakespeare very much, but I've never had any cats named after the characters. Son would probably name the next cat after Cormac McCarthy because he enjoys that mans's novels.

84 An even funnier story on our Shakespeare names is when we rescued a little black and white kitten when my kids were little.

My wife took the kitten to the vet to get shots. The vet said it was a female, so my wife named it Lady Macbeth. My two oldest daughters (in their "princess" years) loved calling the cat Lady Macbeth.

However, at age six months, I noticed that Lady Macbeth was swinging a pair of balls. My wife was not convinced, so took the cat in to be spayed, and the vet said "whoops", he is a dude.

After that, he became just Macbeth.

He did not seem to be mentally damaged by being "mis-gendered" during his formative months. He was an excellent "mouser" and left us dozens of "presents" on the back steps during his life!

85 5:16.

I moved Snowflake out and found Trumpy. All animals are outside. Ralphy will be in shortly..

Cat invasion neutralized.

But they are so cute and fluffy and like me so much.
No. Neutralized.

For today.
