Ace of Spades Pet Thread, February 15

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Well, here are some pets who made it into politics, sort of. Courtesy IrishEi who note that they're adorable.

Meet The PetMorons

madison chame.jpg

Madison contemplates a chameleon.
Eromero

I hope everything turned out okay for both of them.

finn j.jpg

I'm not sure who's doing the Pet Thread nowadays, but here is my new golden retriever puppy Finn. He is 10 weeks old and a terror. We have started calling him the Hellhound. Lucky for him, he's adorable. Here he is in a timeout, with a toy he stole from Grandma's room.

- Jordan61

Yes, he is adorable. Hope the timeouts become less frequent.

kraken gray.jpg

This is Kraken, racing name PG Kraken. We adopted him when he was a senior. He'd been in foster care for about three months because older dogs are harder to adopt and he needed a quiet home without kids.

He was with us for a very happy five years and slipped away peacefully one night. And as you can see, he was very puzzled about me asking him to pose for this shot:

NR Pax

You're doing good work, NR Pax. The travel adventure to re-home a retired greyhound, shared on January 25, was also impressive. Sorry for the loss of Kraken.

Still catching up on pet submissions. More next wee. Thank you for sharing your pets with us.

If you would like to send pet and/or animal stories, links, etc. for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, the address is:

Until next Saturday, have a great week!

NR Pax, I'm sorry for your loss of Kraken. You are a good person for adopting a senior dog.

6 The pets are adorable

I laughed at the Valentine’s Day cat cartoon. We got a new chair to use for son to sit in front of the computer. Pynchon the cat loves the big box left over and he goes in there to sit and to scratch another piece of cardboard in there He likes to sleep on top of the box. We really should get rid of the box. 😉

Cats must have lived in caves in the distant past they love boxes so much.

7 Oh, Zola, you were the best!

Posted by: Hokey Pokey at February 15, 2025 03:42 PM (QSrLX)

8 Thanks CaliGirl. Just a quick backstory on that. We had a foster dog that wasn't getting adopted out. She was aloof with visitors and had also decided that our house was hers. We contemplated adopting her but then my wife read up on Kraken and said "What about him?"

So we made a deal: If our foster didn't get adopted out by the visitor we were getting that day, we'd take her. If she was adopted, we'd take Kraken. Next thing you know, we're driving to Virginia to get him.

The fact that you refer to "first supper" implies that there's a "second supper" later.

Are your cats part Hobbit by any chance?

One would think. What we put out at 4 pm (wet food) usually gets partly eaten, then put back out at 6-6:30 pm for 2nd supper.

The dry stuff's available 24/7. Leastways if we don't want the cats to eat us.

23 Several years ago, I was watching my sisters cats at the time. I had an empty 12 case beer box waiting to be taken out to the garbage pick up. One night, I hear a commotion, only to find one cat had crawled into the hole on top of the box, and was inside it now while the other cat was poking at her from the outside. 27 Had a scare this week. Monday morning, with no warning, Precious couldn't use her hind legs. No hint that anything was wrong before this. The vet couldn't explain it since she wasn't in pain. Blood work was good and no sign of a spine problem. Could be a brain tumor but nothing definitive. The vet prescribed a mild steroid and some muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories. She is doing much better, although the back legs are still unsteady but each day brings improvement. Part of the problem is she is almost 17 years old and some of this could just be her body wearing out. (We've been through this before.) We're hoping for a full recovery.

48 Yay, Pet Thread. Yay, Moron pets. Yay, KT back in the saddle.

We had some good critter news this week.

On a very cold, miserable, snowy Sunday evening, sonM found two dogs outside the fence at the dog park. He took pix and called us about it. No official services were available until morning.

MiladyJo thought to call the neighbor's granddaughter who had worked at the vet's. She suggested posting something on Facebook.

So, our son-in-law posted the pix and info on Facebook.

Next day, we find out the owner had got the word and had found his dogs! ❣️

Remarkable. Social media has its redeeming qualities.

I still won't have a soc-med account, though. 😉

54 The feral tortoiseshell cat who occasionally visits my front door for food is still around; it seems she survived the Snow Surprise last month. We spotted her last night sitting by a tree. She won't come near if anyone is outside, but she will creep up if the screen door is closed, even if I'm standing there. I put out some dry food, and by morning it was gone.

There are several other ferals: a black cat with a clipped-off tail, a sandy tabby, and others. A lot of them have bushy coats or at least tails. We've always wondered if my late big black cat Wolf, when he was still intact and his former humans let him roam, spread some longhair genes among the feral population.

59 I don't know how to type birds, but I would not be surprised if that farmer avoided that bird's nest because the bird is another one on the endangered list.

We've paused million dollar per day projects because some endangered bird decided to nest close enough to our Right-Of-Way. The fines for encroaching the EPA-mandated buffer zone make pausing for a month the economically beneficial decision.

The farmer had a choice: avoid the bird, or lose his farm. I don't put that choice as being "the face of humanity."

Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at February 15, 2025 07:32 PM (bufu1)

60 LCMS Rulz! at February 15, 2025 07:32 PM

That farmer didn't leave much of a buffer zone. Building a shade structure for mama bird would probably violate the endangered species act if that bird were endangered.

Farmers have been avoiding the nests of non-endangered birds for a long time. There are some burrowing owls living in a field not far from us.
