The Ace of Spades Pet Thread

IMG_0300.JPG

(I'm guilty as charged.)

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. KT is back home from the hospital and recuperating. I'm your subsitute Pet Sitter today.

And please leave the current events and politics at the curb.

We do have on PET MORON today to show off. Funeral therapy dog, I don't think I have ever heard of that before. But looking at Chloe she's a natural.

20220713_150328.jpg

This is Chloe. She has been the therapy dog at the funeral home my family used to own. She is a sweet girl who offered comfort to those in their time of grief.
She is retired now and living her best life. Good doggeh! - SD Dreaming

The following is from Quarter Twenty and it actually made me chuckle out loud. Great contribution.

Well that wraps up the Pet Thread for today. Thank you for stopping by and visiting. I'm not sure who will be here next week. But tune in at the same time next week.

Have a great week.

12 Our church has a whole "comfort dog" ministry. Golden retrievers, mostly, who go through two years of training for the slot. They are in huge demand all over the place - disasters, tests in school, home traumas & tragedies, lonely old age homes, women's shelters. Just everywhere, you name it.

It takes two years of training, because these dogs are to be both emotional and physical comfort to people. They are going to comfort the anguished, the sorrowful, the angry, even the psychotic so they need to be able to bear and withstand what they're going to encounter. They all have handlers - who also go through extensive training - to prevent abuse of the animals. But from that you see some kid "petting" the dog so fiercely in his anger, or hugging it so tightly in her grief, letting it out....and eventually softening in their emotions. It brings tears to your eyes to see it.

13 We have a week or so of cold weather ahead. Mr Trouble and Fanny are finally coming to terms with each other. I think they touched noses. Lots of talk from Troubles and he went out for a bit. He is now allowed in the bedroom for a bit, but not while I'm sleeping. I usually go in there with Jake and read for awhile at night.

Hank the stray hasn't forgiven me for wiping his face a bit. At least he has food, water and a warm place to sleep. Still has a bad eye infection. If I can figure out a way to catch him, I'll take himtothe vets. I'd have to board him there as I don't have a placefor him inside.

23 Kitties are doing fine except for minor (hopefully) problems. Let's see, Purrcy has a sore front leg, possibly from jumping down from the tall display case. He's almost 13.
Hopefully Callie's halitosis will resolve with the antibiotic. She is the oldest cat now at 14 and almost toothless.
Squeak hasn't vomited on the new modem which is now upright so less of a target.
Mr Grey has been accepted by Marty (tuxedo) and some of the Cheese family babies. Those babies are so friendly to all the other cats that they have no problems interacting. Must be a family trait. I actually suspect that Mr Grey is the dad.
Daughter has an update with pictures which I'll post.

26 Our sweet boy Grrr (the best blind dachshund ever) went home to dog heaven last fall. He was 15 years old and dealing with a couple of bleeding lesions on his belly. Probably skin cancer from all of the sunbaths he took during his life. Grrr came to us from a relative who had lived in Texas. Grrr clearly liked the hot sun and would spend most of his time in the summer outside on the doormat, belly up. His blindness never stopped him and he was very fierce in his younger days, scrapping over toys with our other dogs. He was doing pretty well until his last six months. He kept getting lost in the backyard and was sleeping almost all the time. He still loved to go for walks. But the bleeding was becoming worse and the doctor recommended an expensive surgery just to find out if it was cancer. Grrr hated going to the vet. He even hated riding in the car to go to the vet. Plus we knew it was time. A very nice vet came to the house to help Grrr go home. I haven't really been able to post about it until now. He was the goodest boy. I miss him very much. I'll send along some pictures in the coming weeks.
KT I hope you are recovering well. Your Saturday contributions are missed.

28 YT has a couple of kittuh vids I like watching. Louis the river kittuh! Just a lady and her magnificent Maine Coon Cat. He mostly hangs out on the front of a kayak, while she paddles around some canals in Germany. It's very relaxing to watch. The other one is Teddie and Casper, two Persian kittuhs living in Britain. They mostly hang out in there staff's garden. They're pretty kittuhs. I grew up with a Persian kittuh. They make wonderful noises. They don't meow. They mwaah. Those flat faces screw with the vocal cords I guess.

31 Yay, pet thread. Even if it is a bit abbreviated today. It's the MisHum of Spades blog. You can't keep a good retired ONT Cob away.

Time for another report on Daisy the overly energetic Malinois.

She has her own bed in our bedroom, but for weeks, maybe months, she seems to prefer spending the night in the 2nd bedroom or on the couch, where she can be On Alert all the time to whatever's out front.

On a recent night she —once again— Alerted to heaven-knows-what at very dark o'clock, barking up a storm for 'way too long. I herded her into the bedroom and closed the door. Since then, she has returned to sleeping in her own bed all night, and sleeping through the night. Yay.

I do respect her dutifully protecting us, but she can do it just as well in our bedroom. Doesn't really need to go wild over every creak or snap in the yard.

Now she's even going in to hit the sack before we do, popping out briefly to nudge us to go to bed ourselves. Such a smart girl.

Now if we can break her of roaring every time the neighbors have a visitor or head out to the pasture to care for the cattle!

But she reserves her loudest barkfest for when she's about to go out and chase a ball. Hurts my ears!

I have a couple of pics of Stirling during his first year taken from an angle like that. He didn't look like an enraged alien, no, but very much unlike himself . . . esp. because at the time he had a strip of black rubbed off the center of his nose (it's since grown back), showing weirdly pink, and one white whisker (it's since fallen out).

He just woke me from my nap, ahead of the alarm. No idea why; it's a while until the cats' dinner time.

35 Sorry to hear about Grr's passing. I understand the feeling of loss well. My better half is a nut for mini doxies. She had two when I met her and she was devastated when health problems. They both crossed the rainbow bridge 6 years ago, within weeks of each other. We talked about being weenie free so we could travel. That lasted a whole 3 weeks until she advised we were driving down to Nacogdoches to get a rescue. Cute little reddish long haired mini dox. That was followed several weeks later by another rescue from the Hot Springs pound. Did cut down dramatically on the travel, And, several years later once again health issues. Both passed within a month. Of course, she can't live without miniature dachshunds around, so she hunted and hunted and got 2 pups at weaning from 2 different breeders ... one of whom is pretty bad at it. It's pretty evident at 1 year that the first one is a chiweenie, not the pureblood that had been promised. Two zoomie puppies ate a lot of entertainment!

Mrs. L., my condolences to you. I had the same happen with Chekov D. Siberian back in '21 into late '22, and chose a home visit rather than dragging him in the car to the vet one last time. He was able to pass at his home of twelve years and with his humans around him. I'm sure Grrr found it much easier as well.

I had no idea KT, our usual mistress of ceremonies, had gone to the hospital, just that she was sick last week. I pictured flu or something. I hope she's better soon.

38 "Dig noses look like angry aliens" Thanks, Quarter Twenry; I laughed. FenSpouse said, "That's scary" but I don't think he was really scared. I think the first dog nose looks like a monkey. The second looks like a diabolical owl and the third one looks like, yes, and angry alien.

And I love the story of Chloe, the therapy dog at a funeral home. I have not heard of that before. What a great idea! What a sweet dog.

39 Yes, having dogs, or cats, cuts down on your travel freedom. When I retire, I need to travel up to Kentucky and Indiana, at the least, to have a look at the places and talk to some people, get a feel for the land. If Miss Linda stays behind, she can care for my cats; if she comes along, I'll hire a pet sitter I've had recommended to me by a former boss.

But the apartment/house would be terribly empty when I come home if they weren't there.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 08, 2025 04:34 PM (omVj0)

40 In my 37, I meant to write that Chekov was ill from *late* '21 into *early* '22. That was a long six months where we kept hoping he'd recover, since we had no real diagnosis for his listlessness (except his age, 14 years). He'd rally and eat and walk around, then each time slip back further than before.

When the vet was coming over, I put up a few pictures of him around the place, and played Russian classical music on YooToob. This was for Linda rather than him . . . but it was for me too. The darn cat nipped me every month for twelve years, but I loved him and miss him still.

Damn.

Little Fitz, on the other hand, took his bath grooming and nail trimming very well for a 9-month-old puppy.

When we got him his bite was a mess, but he appears to have grown out of it pretty well. He has a weak lower jaw and doesn't have a great return of upper arm. On the other hand, he moves beautifully. He's entered in his first real show in a couple of weeks.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at February 08, 2025 05:38 PM (lCaJd)

54 I love the idea of a Funeral Therapy Dog.

There have been a few occasions in the past where I could only sit on the floor and cry while hugging the dog. Luckily, for both of us, not too many.

Posted by: L - No nic, another day at February 08, 2025 05:41 PM (NFX2v)

55 Yes; I know some dog-phobes. I imagine that the funeral home sensitively asked people who used their services if they liked dogs and would they appreciate some time with Chloe? They’d probably ask if people liked cats if they also had a cat therapy pet. I’ve always had more cats than dogs ( I’ve had three dogs in my life as a pet owner ) but I enjoy petting friendly dogs when I met them.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 08, 2025 05:44 PM (SZhls)

56 Wolfus: I've had cats and dogs all my life, but there are a couple I miss more than the others. My first two bookstore cats, litter mates, just about killed me to lose. It's been fifteen years or so, but I still miss them something fierce.

We had a GSD from the time she was able to leave her mother until the day she passed. We wanted to get another GSD puppy, but Himself' mother and aunt, both in their 90s, were living with us, so we settled for two medium sized mutts from the Humane Society. Both of us still perk up whenever we see a GSD.

58 This may sound silly, but Mr. JQ has a plushy pet cat at the care home, what looks *a lot* like our Cat. LOL, he named it "Fred." Nurses at the hospital got a real kick out of Fred & made sure hubby always had him near.

He constantly fidgets with his hands and needs something to grasp... and of course, he misses his Little Buddy... Fred helps keeps him calm, what a blessing!
