Hello -
Long time lurker, maybe a few random comments over the years. Here is my 12 y/o Piper the goldendoodle and Katherine (aka Kitty). Piper is going through some health issues and may not be around that much longer (cancer). Katherine was feral stray that adopted us and they have been best friends for over 7 years now. If we go for a walk, Katherine always follows along and waits while we visit neighbors.
I never miss an almost famous pet thread - thanks for the consideration.

I'm hauling a greyhound to his new home and wanted to submit a picture.

Hello everyone! This is a picture of Kingston. Today, he is being driven from CT to his new home in VA. I'm meeting him up in a rest stop in MD and will be on the road for about two hours to get him to the next leg of his journey.

I'm sorry Kevin. And Kingston is a beautiful dog.

My friends and neighbors are in Mexico. Sadly the kids have been sick much of the time but they have a few days left and everyone's healthy.

They know that since my mother passed away that my life is completely up in the air and I can no longer take care of Trumpy, Snowflake and their mother Starry. I need to build a life for myself, find a job or find a way to earn income and I can't do this with all the animals. As it is, Mom's depressed dog Ralphy is with me all the time. Much less the cats and their in and out and waking me at crazy hours.

They are beautiful cats and I think my friends were happy Mom and I had them because they were very well taken care of.

11 Yay pets!

Had quite a scare this week. Daisy the magnificent Malinois urped up her breakfast and treats and kept urping for a while. She went out back to poo, and when I went to check on her, instead of being ready to come in, she was just lying against the house. In the cold.

I couldn't get her to stand up. She was breathing and her eyes were moving, but otherwise inert. I wrapped her in a blanket, and MiladyJo and I carried her inside and laid her on the carpet in the kitchen.

Before long, she raised her head up, the first sign of recovering. She gradually improved, scratching herself and finally getting up. But, she seemed out of it for quite a while. She'd just stand there, vacantly, unresponsive, like someone just coming out of wisdom teeth removal surgery.

She got better, although she still seems off her feed. Went for a nice, if brief, walk with me this morning and later played fetch as usual. Don't know what that was all about, but she's young and strong and I pray she's over it, or about to be.

Saw Hrothgar's comment about 'as marvelous gift as the Dog!' and it really struck home. Daisy has been such a great Godsend for us, and seeing her so sick really was scary.

17 Love that photo of the French dog running through the snow. One of our poodles loved to romp like that which was hilarious and entertaining but it took a while to get all the snow embedded in his hair to fully dry. He preferred to be in my lap during the drying process. Of course.

18 mindful webworker--That's a terrifying experience. Not that long after we adopted our Luna she ate a Japanese Lady Beetle--the ones that look like ladybugs but bite painfully. It turns out that, while they aren't poisonous, they are very caustic and basically burn all the way down the dog's esophagus and gut. I didn't figure out what had happened until after I saw her in extreme distress. She didn't eat the rest of the day or the next morning.

Neither husband nor I had had a dog in decades so we were freaking out. We were on the verge of calling the vet when she started to slowly recover.

Anyway, it's just a guess but maybe Daisy ate something caustic or mildly poisonous.

Heh. Sometime in one of my two surgeries in the past year, I was lying on the table and realized there were four cute young nurses at my feet, staring at my limp, naked bod. I thought, sorry ladies, I'm not looking my manly best at the moment. But I kept the comment to myself, to keep it clinically professional, and not seem like a pervy old phart or a demented oldster.

The perky young (and competent!) gals did make the hospital stay more endurable. (The less young or perky were also appreciated.)

[Salty, I appreciate your daily reminder to smile and be happy, etc., usually reading it aloud to Milady - in varying voices.]

Diana is now on crate rest for the next 4-6 weeks. No zoomies, no jumping, no running free in the yard, no trotting.

She has a bilateral strain of the ilipsoas muscles, which run from the brisket to the inner thighs. She injured herself as a youngster and we only now have a diagnosis after a very expensive ultrasound. But it does give us a path to recovery.

Diana is an energetic young girl who's bursting with energy. This will be hard on her and us. No bed time and restriction to a very small pen outside.

32 That top photo hit home. One of our senior rescue poodles decided that my oversized recliner was his throne. He would try to stare me down, all twelve pounds of him, until he saw my large butt start descending. Then he would move aside JUST enough so he wouldn't be crushed. After each show down he would graciously condescend to fall asleep on my lap.

35 Combining the zoomies and snow threads, we adopted Luna 3.5 years ago. We're in central Texas, it hadn't snowed here since then so we were wondering how Luna would react to the inch or two we had earlier this week. We took her out for her walk Tuesday morning and quickly got our answer: snow zoomies!! She loved walking and running in the snow.

The downside was that she likes to lay around out in our backyard during the day and found that laying down in the snow wasn't nearly as fun as running in it. She was really glad when it all melted in a day or two.

37 My young cats get the zoomies, usually after they've just eaten. Can be dangerous when the hooman is used as a shortcut. Often it's just two or three of them, and the others just watch. The old cats hunker down, body language is 'just don't bother me please'.

Just watched the Zoomies video. When we first got Daisy, she would zoom in circles around our house, like a rocket. I think I got some video of her. Nowadays, she's not so big on random zoomies, except when Daughter brings her two dogs over. Then, the three of them roar around the yard, and in the house, too. Crazy chaos that's glorious to watch.

41 I continue to be surprised by Mr Trouble. He has decided Jake is his pack. Jake taught him to chew off pieces of cardboard. Yesterday, he was lying outside chewing on the end of one of Jake's sticks. Jake goes over and pees wherever Troubles goes. Now Troubles goes over to cover up where Jake went. I fully expect him to snuggle up with Jake at some point.

Hank, the stray, has decided that regular eats and a warm place to sleep is a good deal. I'm trying to get some weight on him. He needs to go to the vets for the eye infection. He does come over for pets so I think I'll be able to grab him soon.

Brought Sadie (doggo) up to the shack with for a couple of days. Her favorite place to run around outside. She is limiting her outdoor 'sniff interrogations' to 3 - 4 minutes as it's about 15F outside currently. About every hour or so she goes to the door and gives me the 'let's go out again' look. Which I oblige. She is not spoiled at all...

When my friends come back this week, we'll figure out what's best for all of us.

Snowflake and Trumpy are the most beautiful long haired cats. Since Mom died, they've plumped up a bit but it's Canadian winter. They are about 12 and 13 pounds. They aren't fat but they are sturdy.

They aren't my cats but I will ask my friends to advertise Snowflake and Trumpy as a set. They are brother and sister, friends and we all believe lovers. My friends have their last 2 children.....adorable.

I'll toss in some of their favorite toys as an incentive.

I'm willing to keep them here inside for a little while until a new home is found. And their Mom Starry has been with us for weeks. I'll keep her until it's warmer. She's so low maintenance, rarely goes outside. So I can do that for her.

Starry and I are old friends. Between her and her sister Twilight, I've taken care of so many cats.

Anyways, that's what's happening.

I wanted to thank everyone for your help with the cats since they've been here.

We all appreciate it.

Not much in the way of Stirling or Dagny stories today. Oh, wait, there is one. During the Little Ice Age this week, on Tuesday while the snow was falling, Linda formed the idea to take Dagny La Siberienne out and let her experience her ancestral homeland. Dagny did not think much of this. She stayed in Linda's arms, generally speaking, but actually let out a cry -- a weird thing for this kitten, who is practically mute, she squeaks so rarely. This was clearly a "I HATE THIS! Get me OUT of here!" noise.

The little bit of snow that landed on her was all on the surface of her thick triple-coat fur. She stalked around for a few moments as if sulking, then settled down.

We didn't try to expose Stirling to the snow. He's bigger, for one thing, and his objections would have been much more strenuous. And he doesn't have a thick coat like D. does.

49 I will be starting a new job in Idaho soon (wife following a couple months later). One of our concerns is how Scout, our 20 year old kitteh will handle the trip (11-hour drive) and the new surroundings. She is in remarkably good health in general, but shows signs of feline dementia, and she'll sometimes get confused and start hollering during the night. Sometimes I have to point out her food dish.

But she still gets the zoomies, especially after dropping a deuce in her litter box.

I thought weather below zero Fahrenheit would stop Snowflake and Trumpy going out.

Not at all. They'll happily go out and stay put for a few minutes up to an hour. They know the windows to go to in order for me to see them and come in.

It was so freezing. I hated letting them out but they raced outside.....

But, no. They are potential speed bumps by their own choice. I place Guinea Fowl in the same category as pandas. How they still exist is one of the mysteries of the universe.

And they can sense the unease, which puts them more on edge. I love dogs, but am that way with pit bulls. Seems to me it's much tougher to tell with them when they're going from playing to not playing.

See, there were no carts or cars in Africa. Still rare in the bush so not much of a problem, unlike a Los Angeles 7-lane freeway or an German autobahn. Biggest danger was leopards and some of the smaller cats. jackals and foxes. Meat is too gamey for my taste.

65 That top meme. We have a cat, Purrcy, about 11 I think and average size. He hangs around wherever and if a human leaves to do something he will occupy the chair. Then he gets manhandled to make room for the returning human. Sometimes I will have just scooted forwards in preparation to getting up and he'll already be on my chair behind me.

66 I've had to deal with a sick dog. 2 weeks ago, my Maltipoo Charlie started having episodes where he started panting and shaking violently. After 2 vet visits, he was given a anti-inflammatory and sedatives and improved immediately. The vet said he probably hurt his back somehow. He's much better after taking it easy for a week. I'm out $500 which makes me feel a bit sick, but he's worth it.

72 Happy Pet Thread day. I have always had aggressively protective dogs. They never bit anybody because I never let them interact with people. Come on my place uninvited and they would not hesitate to take a leg. My guys now are worthless as protectors.

76 I used Feliway in the ne place, although I don't know how much it helped. We had a four day trip. Fanny travels well and was in a large carrier. She was happy to get a stopover at Screamin In Digital's to stretch out for a bit.

I don't know about cats but with dogs they say you absolutely should wait until the pooch is at least 12 weeks old before taking them away from their little and mom.

Apparently, it takes that long for a dog to get it ingrained in his brain that he's a dog and learn proper "dog manners and behaviors" from mom.

If you get them earlier, the dog may think he's human but, you know, he's got dog instincts. So, that can cause issues. One being a lot of aggressive leg-humping, which supposedly would not happen or be very much minimized by letting the pup reach 12 weeks before taken home.

The science is settled, people.
