Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Volkswagen is Halting US Electric Vehicle Production Until at Least 2025The ID.4's share in Volkswagen's total sales amounted to 5.7%, down noticeably from 8.7% a year earlier.Volkswagen’s Tennessee EV plant had an original production goal of 90,000 units in 2023, to rise even higher in 2024. But through the first half of 2024, VW had sold less than 12,000 electric vehicles in the US, which annualizes to less than 24,000. News about Volkswagen halting EV production broke last week, in association with a recall involving faulty door handles – a problem that for some peculiar reason is unique to VW’s electric cars but doesn’t affect its gas-powered cars. “Volkswagen to halt ID.4 production in the US following nearly 100,000 vehicle recall” [electrek – 9/18/2024] Volkswagen plans to temporarily halt ID.4 production at its Chattanooga, TN, plant following a nationwide recall involving nearly 100,000 models. According to a VW statement, roughly 200 workers will be furloughed at the plant. According to Volkswagen, the production halt could last until the beginning of next year as it works to resolve the issue.A story in KBB states that Volkswagen EV production is not expected to resume until 2025. Interestingly, it also notes that while ID.4 production is being halted indefinitely, ”[Volkswagen] hasn’t told people who already own ID.4s to stop driving them.” As I alluded to earlier, there is precedent for “quality” or “supply chain” issues being promoted as the reason for stopping production of unwanted EVs. Earlier this month I discussed how Rivian stopped production of its Amazon delivery van after a series of spontaneous fires involving these vans. Rivian blamed the production shutdown on “supply chain issues,” but somehow those supply chain issues only affect the Amazon delivery vans that keep combusting. Tellingly, Rivian refused to disclose which parts are snared in the supply chain. The ID.4 had been imported from Europe for several years prior to the launch of US assembly, but consumers never really warmed to the car in the first place. Less than 10% of VW’s 2023 US sales were EVs, before EV sales plunged 28% in 2024 from the already anemic baseline.
++++ That's downright healthy compared to the Eurozone and VAG's home market in Germany. In the EU, sales of EVs have fallen by more than 40% and in Germany by over 50%, IIRC. EVs can be neat, or they can be super cool. But outside of the one thing they do extremely well (go extremely fast with crazy acceleration - that is, be a short-range sports car), they do nothing better for the money. They are a luxury, even outside of the luxury segment. They're a novelty (they're neat). They're a virtue signal. They're a "keeping up with the Joneses" thing. Not that anyone should be told or required to buy something (As they are wont to do with re-chargeable cars) but by the same token .... they tell you what you cannot buy, too. Like say, - Golf Carts. Toyota is the global auto major that will have the last laugh. Of all the majors, it's the only one that didn't go all-in on EVs, Red China, or both. It's been the contrarian in both respects, engineering for the greatest number in the most places. It's kept its head down and pushed hard on traditional powertrains and hybrids, maintaining market share is as many places as possible. It also has pure-electric EVs, but they've never been a focus.
Ford, VAG and GM went all-in on pure electric and/or Red China. They're in for a *very* rough time. My money is on Toyota and Hyundai/Kia emerging as top dogs - Toyota by design, Hyundai/Kia by luck. Willowed or woulda been: Who the hell doesn't notice an extra property on their electric bill for 18 years? I know electricity is expensive in some places, but anybody who actually pays for their juice knows exactly what it costs.
The Utility or power company saw the error of their ways, however. Credited his account with 600 bucks. Yeah - no, that isn't how this works. If he owed *them* for 18 years worth of juice they would want every penny and send it to a collection agency. So he's an idiot, but one would think they owe him a more substantial sum than 600 bucks. FoMoCo is now openly aping Toyota's marketing, which is a major sign of what's going on.
This year, Toyota has had a campaign with the tagline, "Toyota is electrified, diversified." It goes over Toyota's robust portfolio of EV options, focused on hybrids and then followed by "plug-in hybrids" and then pure electric EVs. They started that campaign this year, as far as I can tell, and it's a solid play. A lot of people are enamored with the idea of an EV - or with the virtue signalling EV ownership can express - but don't actually want (or can't afford) an EV, or don't want the tradeoffs of owning one. Toyota has nailed the EV-curious market perfectly, advertising what they care about with a nudge and a wink while whispering in the customer's ear, "plus, it's actually good." Ford is doing the same, now. Less competently and with less polish, but the same message. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 23, 2024 11:15 AM (HnUIn) 58

I read something about the collapse of EV sales in Germany that said that as expensive as gasoline is in Germany, electricity is even more expensive, so it costs twice as much to charge an EV as it costs to fuel a conventional car.

54 Was thinking other day, how much does it cost I St to charge a EV and how many miles will it get on that charge?
I get different models and age will matter Posted by: Skip If you're "filling" up at a commercial charger, it's not much cheaper than putting gas in an efficient hybrid.if you charge at home, though, you can see some savings. We have a Chevy Bolt EV, which averages about 4 miles per kWh. One kWh of electricity costs about 11 cents when charging at home...so 3.6 cents a mile? We also have a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid that gets about 50 mpg. At, say, $3 gallon, that's 6 cents a mile...with low gas prices. My energy rates at home are even cheaper, because I have solar panels, lowering the cost further, technically. Lead-acid "golf cart" or deep cycle batteries charge slowly at best and only take longer (and require temperature compensated voltages) when it gets cold.
They will work though, at well below freezing, and can be recharged. The weird thing about the LiFiPo batts is they cannot be recharged below freezing or thereabouts. There are workarounds to this, none of them very good, not for poor folks who just need to get to work, or the store in places other than LA or Florida. A "Golf Cart" with a good charger and batts could be well under 10k and last for years. Posted by: Common Tater at September 23, 2024 11:31 AM (oN30K) 149

Posted by: Lurker at September 23, 2024 11:30 AM (FC8SQ) ++++ That's the other use case for them, yes, but there are tradeoffs some people don't like. It comes down, largely, to how long you plan to keep a car. If you're a "cycle them out every 5-7 years" kind of person, then it's fine, so long as you're willing to deal with preposterously low resale value. If you're a "drive it until the wheels fall off" kind of person, it's a bad fit. Self-induced, because of inherent contradictions built into our systems, by political illiterates, innumerates, sex perverts, sandal wearers, vegetarians, fruititarians and other undesirables. Not really caring what it is now. I care about what it is forecast to become. As I posted earlier in the morning thread, water temperatures in the eastern Gulf of Mexico right now are 2.0 to 2.5 degrees C above average for this time of year. That, combined with the high-altitude anticyclone currently sitting above the area of disturbance can lead to some pretty rapid intensification. I like how Hummer decided this is the time to get into the EV market.
The biggest reason people don't buy--and don't retain their EV--is charging anxiety: where is the next charge? So, a vehicle 1) that "supposed" to take you off-road--far, far away from any charger and 2) where said off-road activity is a huge energy suck? Damn, how many Ivy League degrees do you need to come up with that brilliance? Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at September 23, 2024 12:03 PM (s+L6B) 300

>>Good luck with that. Trumps 1st impeachment was for him ostensibly holding up arms shipments in order to make ZMan look into The Biden Crime family corruption. If congress passes some bullshit long term security arrangement, and the donks have the house, and Trump doesn't follow the agreement to the letter of the law, then I can see them impeaching Trump again, and there is a non-zero chance that a Vindman could be one of the impeachment managers. Although, if the GOP has the Senate, they could do what the Donks did for the Myorkas Impeachment and simply vote that the articles of impeachment are unconstitutional, although I highly doubt the GOP would do that. Any Stellantis product right now is doomed. Their CEO is a legitimate moron who has no idea about market forces in play right now. Paying $60k for a Jeep Wranlger Rubicon is just NOT happening.
Posted by: Defenestratus at September 23, 2024 11:37 AM The CEO is likely a WEF puppet. As are all the US auto company CEOs. Stellantis EV employee training has been full of WEF Agenda 2030 and "climate change" propaganda since the merger in 2021. It also highlights the US EPA regulations which essentially ban ICE vehicles starting in 2025. Which is why all US automakers went full-EV as soon as the election was rigged and stolen in 2020. Trump Administration policies had put a halt on the Obama Administration policies which were drastically increasing the regulations and targets for emissions and fuel economy. But as soon as the Deep State got rid of Trump, those regulations and targets were back in place and are set to skyrocket in 2025. Development of vehicle programs takes about 3-5 years. So to meet the 2025 regulations, all auto companies shifted to EV planning in 2021. Only way any of that changes is if the 2025 EPA regulations are changed. I ignited a coworker's ire when I suggested I admired VW engineers' pluck a few years ago when faced with impossible and arbitrary emissions standards. Rather than try to achieve the impossible for no other reason than a bureaucrat said it must be so, the engineers simply programmed a "limp mode" whenever the car detected it was being subjected to an emissions test. So the car temporarily dropped its fuel consumption and altered its timing to pass the test. And when the car was successful and unplugged, it would return to normal operating mode.
I saw that as a "stick it to the man" moment, but my coworker thought it disgusting that the company refused to play along. This last EV move suggests that there are more pragmatists than idiots working at the company. Posted by: red speck at September 23, 2024 12:58 PM (0Id0S) 325
207 >> Someone should make an auto that eschews all the electronic gadgets. Manual windows, stick shift, no engine computer, etc. sell it at a price point of about $10k.
I was in exactly this headspace this weekend. I was recounting the day in the mid 80s when I accompanied my dad to a Nissan dealership and watched him pull out his checkbook and write a check for $3500 and sign papers so we could drive away in a brand new Sentra hatchback. He set aside money for a year and bought a car straight out. I finally sold the car 20 years ago as it was disintegrating from age. Still ran like a top, but the dashboard was crumbing and the electrical was starting to glitch. Posted by: red speck at September 23, 2024 01:03 PM (0Id0S) 326
Good to see Volkswagen finally addressing their door handles. When I owned a 68 Volkswagen Beetle in the 90s, I used to buy window handle knobs by the dozen. The cheap "monkey metal " that Volkswagen made door handles, window handles and windshield wipers out of was total junk. I snapped them off routinely every couple of months. Some people are crazy for "German Engineering". Fun stuff unless you actually get to experience it first hand.

I have a 14 Silverado CC with a 5.3L. Good sized V8. Problem is the onboard computers have taken the power out of these. Case in point. If I'm merging on a highway and I need to get up to speed quickly (new england has awful onramps) -- you step on it right? Better bake in 3+ seconds while the computer figures out what to do when you floor it.
Saw the same thing with a 2024 Ford Escape I rented when I was traveling in Detroit. Now, that was a 4cylinder, but same symptoms. And in Detroit - when you need to move - you need to move now whether dodging fellow drivers or bullets. Posted by: Our Country is Screwed at September 23, 2024 11:24 AM (N39Ws) My wife and I tested a 4 cylinder turbo Chevy small SUV - I forget the exact model. When we stood on the gas, it accelerated pretty quick, but after about 20 mph (30 to 50, like a highway merge), it abruptly slowed the acceleration to a crawl. I figure the onboard computer had a boost timer count down. The Dodge turbos in the mid-80s had a 10 second timer before dropping the boost back to just above atmospheric. So I asked the salesman, but he had no idea what I was even talking about. Posted by: Advo at September 23, 2024 04:12 PM (jO4mz) 330

Tesla doesn’t seem to be having any issues. The Model Y is the second best selling vehicle in the US right now and may end up the top selling with a Qtr ending push (and by that I mean dethroning the F150). The Cybertruck is also outselling all other electric trucks combined.
Maybe it’s not the EVs, it’s the companies making them. Posted by: Novanglus at September 24, 2024 12:58 AM (3IJ3o) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.067 seconds. |
