Meet The PetMorons

Luna p atches.jpg

Hello K.T.,

After so many years, finally delurking, first with TRex for the hobby thread and now the pet thread.

Here's a picture of 4-year-old Luna, half Norwegian Elk Hound and the rest various shepherd dogs not including German Shepherd. Luna apparently has the traits and personality of Norwegians; here she's guarding the backyard against squirrel invasions.

Greatly enjoy the pet thread - many thanks.

nic is Patches

We're so happy that you've decided to become a commenter. Luna is beautiful, and that is a beautiful photo. I trust that you will be safe from squirrels.

Buckley is now officially Buckette!
Keep him in a cone they said. No jumping, running, stairs, or other high energy activities they said. Keep this up for 2...TWO weeks... lolololololol!!!!
Here are some pills to keep him calm... since he's a border collie/blue heeler...
He is not amused!!!

lin-duh

Buckley is still your Good Boy. A wonderful pup.

Hello! I saw this crew of German Shepherds riding around in town on a Saturday a while back. I was at the right place at the right time to get this fun photo.

Regards,
Dirac_Delta

Actually, my wife doesn’t think that they are all German Shepherds, so I’ll leave the breed identification up to you.

Wow! That is a real crew of dogs!

4 My cat Allie has finally assimilated fully into my household. It only took her two years.

For the past week or so, she has been spending a lot more time in my office where Kaylee, Penny, and Jasmine tend to hang out.

Right now she's perched on the bookcase behind my office chair, just as relaxed as can be.

I'll have a nice picture of that for the Sunday Morning Book Thread in the near future.

7 Well, the baby kitty who was dropped off with the Mister is blind. Which is probably why the Mom and daughters were distraught about keeping him. He seems to be getting around pretty well, climbs on shelves and finds his dinner quickly. Still prefers not to be picked up. Is OK with being petted.

28 Afternoon, Pet Folken! Big black Stirling cat is on my lap, and I am typing sideways. Is difficult. Will persevere.

At the World Market this morning, I bought a pop-up Halloween card with a black cat in a striped witch hat. Normally they depict H. cats with skinny tails. But this feline has a bushy tail, more like Stirling's and the late Wolf's. Nine bucks (!), but I liked it anyway. The question will be, where can I display it where the real cats won't play with it?

33 Some of the puppies in the pickup truck remind me of a yung readers novel from Whitman long ago, Rin Tin Tin's Rinty. It was not a Western or based off the then-current TV series about Corporal Rusty and RTT -- they had two of those I read and loved. This was a 1950s tale about a brother and sister who adopt a purebred German shepherd pup and bond with him for a little time before he's dognaped. We have his adventures, and the hunt by the brother and sister to find out where he's gone.

Been a long time since I read it; maybe I can find a copy of eBay or ThriftBooks.

34 Luna is a beauty. Buckly is also and that face seems so expressive and registering his dismay at the no new collar and low activity.

Posted by: PaleRider at August 31, 2024 04:33 PM (83y/e)

35 Come think of it, for horse people, Whitman also had a Roy Rogers novel where Trigger was stolen by a pair of thieves who wanted to use him in horse shows or rodeos (I think), and it chronicled Roy's long search for him at rodeos all over the Southwest -- Albuquerque, for instance, Flagstaff, and El Paso. Apparently someone at Whitman had a soft spot for stories about beloved animals being separated from their people. It might even have been the same author as Rin Tin Tin's Rinty.

I have a copy of it and need to read it again.

36 Visiting the pipe shop this morning, I fell into conversation with another customer as he smoked his cigar. Turns out he has a dog and a cat, both black and white ("tuxedo"), and he showed me pics on his phone. I reciprocated with phone pics of Dagny and Stirling. Must have been the funniest thing, to see two older guys displaying their pics of their pets like most people flash pics of their kids.

37 Pet Thread! Glad I didn't miss it today!

Malinois report: Daisy has been playing fetch a lot, which she does always at top speed until she decides she's done. Consequently, she's looking pretty good.

After one ball-chasing session last week, she laid down in the grass to rest — her new habit. MiladyJo had been throwing the ball before going into town. I walked out and she asked if I wanted to take over waiting for Daisy while she left. I said, what if she suddenly decides to run off? Apparently, Daisy heard me, because she immediately jumped off, ran out to the pasture, and began harassing one of the cattle. Eventually, she came back. Thought we had her cured of doing that.

She ran off with a ball still in her mouth. It's out in the pasture somewhere.

Ony the old black kitty wants some Pet Thread ink. Not much to say about her, though. Sleeps on our bed. Likes to go out on the screened-in back porch.

We've managed, after much trial and complaint, to find food both critters will enthusiastically eat. Consequently, yesterday, we gave our whole stash of unwanted canned food to our daughter for her two cats, who are less picky than Ony. Pixy comment limit. That's all...

Posted by: mindful webworker - barklish at August 31, 2024 04:38 PM (SFn6i)

38 With so much rain this year we have more of all kinds of wild critters out and about. One of my bantam hens found and murdered a little frog, but it was too big for her to eat. The roadrunner who wandered across my patio a few hours later might have cleaned it up.

Posted by: Helena Handbasket at August 31, 2024 04:40 PM (FnneF)

39 Okay, I laughed my ass off over the cartoon about the cat in the window...it was exactly like our cat so many years ago - he'd spend hours staring longingly out the window at every squirrel or bird or rodent - trapped inside! My daughter loved him, but I couldn't take the meowing all day to get out and make a nuisance of himself...

Posted by: Boswell at August 31, 2024 04:40 PM (K+UlC)

40 Little Dagny is around here somewhere. I try to make sure, if I'm going to bed or leaving, that both cats are shut *out* of closets. They love to go in there to sit, or rustle around among the junk. Both climb, and can knock stuff off shelves in the kitchen closet, for instance.

41 Luckily my horses are plain jane coloring, plus would be all snorty and 'nya, cant catch me' if thieves tried. But sounds like a good kid's book. The neighbors invited me to their memorial cookout for their homeschool group. Kids books came up so I of course plugged "Hank the cowdog". I had bought dad a couple of lots off of ebay because they are quite fun for seniors as well as kids, especially seniors that grew up on a farm/ranch.

42 I have a cat that sometimes likes to nuzzle and shnuzzle with dogs. My previous dog would actually massage this cat with her teeth, eliciting loud purrs.

I now have a dog who likes to chase cats. However, this dog also likes to be petted, and under controlled conditions this cat will happily nuzzle this dog.

The Whitmans of those days were well-written; I can usually enjoy them as an adult. One RR novel I didn't care for as a kid, I read again about twelve years ago, and realized why I didn't like it then. There was adventure galore, yes, but also atmosphere, as Roy and the young teen boy who is the viewpoint character travel through canyons where the long-gone Cliff Dwellers lived, and wonder what they were like. It was great.

51 Separation from animals: Albert Payson Terhune wrote many a story about collies, including one I read as a kid called Lochinvar Luck, and the famous Lad: A Dog. The former had a plot about a young Scots man being separated from the collie pup he'd bought.

There are sad moments galore in Ernest Thompson Seton's Wild Animals I Have Known, too.

And there's a climactic reunion story of a kind in Tarzan and the City of Gold as well.

57 Not quite pet-related, but, maybe you read about the seventy rodeo horses here in Oklahoma that died suddenly from bad feed? Talked to the rancher neighbor about it. He said what they did was, they mixed a batch of feed, then another, then another, and combined them. Unfortunately, they'd added one day's worth of antibiotics with each batch. Eight films in four years. They really cranked 'em out fast. And Columbia, while never at the bottom of the heap among studios, was hardly MGM or Warners. I'v never heard of most of the actors or directors.

71 PaleRider, you remind me of trying to teach my bouvier Barney to fetch. I threw a frisbee. He lumbered (his version of a gallop) across the field and picked it up and brought it back. The second time he trotted over to it and brought it back. The third time he looked up at me, clearly saying, "If you want it over there, I will leave it over there." And he lay down at my feet. Well, on my feet.

77 Well if Buckley likes fetch I'm sure he'd quickly figure out the automated tennis ball thrower. Of course right now you are just trying to keep him chill enough to let his stitches heal.

When I had my pup neutered the vet said leave the collar on for 2 weeks. Well that lasted about 2 days. Toby was interested in the incision so I took it off. Incision healed properly.

78 Can't stop chuckling. You have a great way with words Eris.

79 Robert, who is a bad cat, is reminding me that it has been nearly 8--no, nearly 8.5--minutes since he had treats.

80 My vet used stainless steel stitches on Jake. No collar needed. Not sure why more vets don't do that.

Wasn't not was. Can't blame auto cucumber for that mistake.

82 Heh BC. I made the mistake of giving Tux some Temptations cat treats, or as I named it later "kitty crack"

After a while I read the label, seems to have all the nutrients of cat food, so I'd just give him a dishful.

When I had Dagny spayed, they suggested the cone. We put it on her and *she freaked out*, galloping in terror as if something horrible were following her -- which it was. We managed to get the thing off her, and she calmed down. She too had no interest in the stitches, so all was fine.

86 Come to think of it, Dagny is here, and it is time for me to feed them. Curious how that coincides.

That's frickin' hilarious. With my dog, it's like, "What the heck, man! Can't you SEE that??"

94 Wonderful pet thread this week! Great pictures.

In my town the busybodies passed a law projibiting dogs from riding in truck beds; they must be inside the cab. Not yet do you have to buckle them in.
