Meet The PetMorons

New Kitty Overlord (Overlady?)
Here's my new kitten, Lily, whom I adopted on a whim from a PetSmart adoption event. Objectively, she is the cutest kitty that ever lived, and those big paws and ear tufts lead me to suspect some Maine Coon blood in the mix.

Long time lurker, I post under tRustyHudson on occasion... I've been meaning to share a photo of our best old pup Link. He crossed the Rainbow bridge in 2012... we picked him up from the Husky Rescue in 2007. My wife was pregnant at the time and they wouldn't let her out in the yard since many of the dogs were 'a bit rambunctious'... but this old Malamute just came and sat next to me, just sat there and pressed against me. And that was it, I knew. He was 6-7 by their account, and I hope we gave him his best years.
He was our first son's protector, the devourer of unattended hotdogs and chicken carcasses, and the drinker of misplaced whiskey.
We love you forever, Link.

Awww, Link looks like a wonderful dog. I can see why you still have fond memories.

Attached is a pic taken on a camping trip. My 3 Goldendoodles had a long day hiking and playing in the creek. When it was time for a nap, they did this. They are the I Got Your Back Pack.

22 My buddy and I were talking the other week and he made a good observation. When you are a kid, you look at some of the large breed lifespan's of 9-10 years as a long time.

As you get older, it is way too short.

24 My cat Allie is getting much bolder these days. She's been spending a lot of time in my office on my desk.

Although she doesn't like the other kitties to get too close, she at least tolerates their presence, more or less.

Only took her two years to get to this point.

She's on my desk right now, as a matter of fact, and says, "Hello!"

31 There is a different cat hitting the outside cat food. I was headed to let Jake out. It was sitting on the porch, looking in the back door. I waited till it was gone. This was a light orange and whte and looked pretty rough. There is a fluffy orange and white cat I see sometimes that I think lives on the next street.

I'll have to set up some shelter and feeding stations for this winter.

34 My kittehs have their annual exam and vaccinations coming up in September. I have no issue with the rabies shot but I question the need for another FVRCP booster. They had the regular vax 6 years ago and it made the brother kitteh sick. He had the booster 2 years later and seemed okay. Now it’s time for another booster.

Any thoughts?

38 Afternoon, pet folken! A grand group of animules (sic) today.

Eris, Lily looks much like my Dagny Sophia, La Siberienne. Longhairs really are the best. I'd have gone for her too. It's rare in my experience that a longhaired cat shows up at a PetSmart event, even though they draw from several different shelters in the area. Occasionally there's a medium-hair like Stirling, but most are shorthairs, a lot of black ones in particular.

If you did that here you would have every stray cat in Fannin County coming to your house. We had someone throw a kitten onto our front yard once and she barely managed to make it to the shrubs in the front of the house. I heard her and started feeding her. She stayed way back in the shrubs for over a week before she would let us pet her, but she ate everything I put out while I was standing there. When she got bigger I would leave food out at night for her and my neighbor said every stray cat in the neighborhood would come over beat her up and take her food.

Lucy has her annual on Monday. She never goes outside, so she's not getting any vaccinations.

She has to get her blood drawn to check to make sure her thyroid medication is still the right dose.

Last time we were there the vet said she thought she heard a heart murmur and sent a quote of 1600 bucks for an ultrasound and other diagnostic tests. I declined.

We will see what she says this time.

Here there's a legal requirement for rabies vaccines, not any others that I know of. My two are strictly indoor cats. I don't know why they would need any shots. I suppose it's possible that one might get out and get lost, sustain a bite from a rabid animal, and come back bearing the virus -- but a lot of evil stars would have to align for that to happen.

Opossums roam around here, but they have too low a body temp to take the virus.

59 Big black Stirling is sprawled on the floor halfway between me and the window A/C. I think Dagny is ensconced under the ottoman just beyond my feet. They have their favorite spots to hide, or pose.

Stirling will be two and a half in mid-September, and Dagny will have her second anniversary with me early in the month. Hard to believe. They are past the "crazy kitten" stage, but not far past it; Stirling still races around in the early morning when I get up, and they gallop around and play-stalk each other.

That is supposed to be a Maine Coon trait, the polydactyly. According to what I've read, Hemingway's Maine Coons had it, and their descendants in Key West show it as well.

Can you imagine thick-furred, thick-ruffed cats roaming around outdoors in a hot humid place like that? And indoors before widespread air-conditioning? I know cats like it warm, but my Chekov and Wolf were clearly uncomfortable in the heat and humidity when we had a hurricane knock out the power in 2012. Chekov especially: Siberians have triple coats.

Eris, if Lily is like my late Arizona, who had some Maine Coon traits, she will grow up to be beautiful -- and stubborn, maybe even more than most cats. On the other hand, he was red classic tabby with white; and orange cats have a distinct tendency to be quirky. Lily just may be sweeter than you can imagine.

I've had to deal with this. Orientation has to do with which way the camera was held, which registers in the JPG meta-data. And how browsers handle JPG data. Something like that, but definitely has to do with the meta-data orientation parameter.

Best, if clunky, work-around I found was just to highlight and copy the whole image (not including meta-data) and paste it as a new image, which can be rotated as needed. Don't know if that instruction is clear; been a while since I had to do that.

I had a cat where the vet mentioned a heart murmur. He lived 17 years and didn't die of heart problems.

73 Great photos, everyone. Angus as well as the dogs who chewed up the toilet paper made me laugh, although I'm sure it's not a pleasant things to come home to.

I am grateful for out cat Pynchon who is very good tempered, although he sometimes comes and purrs right in my ear when I'm on the couch taking a nap. He also has a shoe fetish. He will rub up and smell my stinky shoes after I've worn them. Is this a normal things for cats?

He has trouble walking to go outside in the morning, but when he has been outside a while his joint health is good enough that he can walk and run with zero visible limp.

79 The lovely and athletic Mrs naturalfake and I came across a mama bobcat and two kittens while on a constitutional earlier this week.

That makes 3 bobcat families we've seen while walking over the last month or so. Unless, they range far because each sighting was in a very different location.

We have plenty of rabbits and squirrels in the areas for them, buuuuut usually a build-up of bobcats and coyotes means dogs and cats start "disappearing".

So, be wary if in the DFW area.

It's pretty common to think that MC's are the only kind of cat that is tabby and longhaired, but both these features can occur in many cats with different body styles. She looks a lot like a cat I had, who was very lanky with long legs....so long that a Persian I had ran *under* him when trying to dart back inside. His hair while long was pretty flat on the body, and he had a very long floofy tail almost as long as he was.

MC's main features are a heavy,angular head and face and of course size. Lilly seems more normally built there, and she seems a bit out of the kitteny stages and getting lanky.

You might want to check out Adequan as a medication for your dog. Our vet recommended it for our dog--she's much younger--when she was developing arthritis in a hip joint. It's kind of expensive for the initial course but it's very affordable once you get to a maintenance dose.

OTOH, SiL decided not to pursue it for their elderly dog because of the cost.

85 62 Wolfus, Lily had a brother that was adopted before I got there. I happened to meet the girl who adopted him when we were waiting in line at PetSmart to get shots for our kitties. The brother was minus the ruff but had six fingers in each paw!

That is supposed to be a Maine Coon trait, the polydactyly. According to what I've read, Hemingway's Maine Coons had it, and their descendants in Key West show it as well.

Can you imagine thick-furred, thick-ruffed cats roaming around outdoors in a hot humid place like that? And indoors before widespread air-conditioning? I know cats like it warm, but my Chekov and Wolf were clearly uncomfortable in the heat and humidity when we had a hurricane knock out the power in 2012. Chekov especially: Siberians have triple coats.

I’ve been to Hemingway house and seen the cats, they seemed to be happy. About 7 years ago Mrs. E and I had a chinchilla 6 toe just walk up on our deck. We named him Moreo. He wandered off the same way he arrived.

Shoes smell like you and where you've been, and are cat sized while humans can be big and scary, so cats like to hang around near them. Also your bed smells like you so is the preferred safe spot for a scared cat.

89 MC's main features are a heavy,angular head and face and of course size. Lilly seems more normally built there, and she seems a bit out of the kitteny stages and getting lanky.

I know a lady who set up "nesting" boxes for her cats overwinter, they were the two compartment wooden fruit boxes, with a cardboard front with a round hole for each side. She filled them with loose straw so the strays would have insulation. She had a row of them on her back porch

93 Youngest daughter just started at our local Enormous State University. Finished classes on Thursday and went to the "animal calming room".

She said they were greeted by little old ladies with dogs that were certified as service animals. Because it was little old ladies, she expected tiny lap dogs.

Instead, she said the two most chill dogs were a giant Great Pyrenees and a St. Bernard. Both were larger than she was and both loved the attention!

Our vet recco'd this for old dog (RIP) but said to go ahead & buy the "human" kind, because "pet" kinds have less-stringent standards for potency/content. He specified the dosage too, but I can't recall what it was. Pet brands were approx 5x cost of human brands! And, unfortunately, weren't available in chewables. Wrapped in a slice of cheese, however-- no problemo!

Doggo did seem to improve, for about a year...

She now sleeps on every comfy surface in the house -- except the dedicated Pet Bed shaped like a cat head. Maybe it's like Zardoz and freaks her out.

One of the neighbors at our farm used to have at least 20 semi-feral cats on his porch when you drove past. Which means in actuality he probably had at least 40.

I was a little mad because I was managing part of our farm for wildlife, including quail and pheasant.

Then I noticed some bobcat sign on my farm, and finally caught them on my trailcams.

Within a year and a half, I could no longer see a single feral cat. Don't know if the bobcats liked hunting the housecats, or if they eliminated them as competitors.

However, my wildlife numbers subsequently went way up. One bobcat family is way better than 40 semi-feral housecats - for wildlife. But much worse for cats on the loose!

When my parents bought their farm in Vermont they inherited two feral cats that lived in the rafters of a shed. They would skulk up there and if you made the mistake of walking underneath they would swat at you with claws like some beast from a horror movie.

Bobcats wouldn't have stood a chance with those two beasts.

106 I've had pretty good luck giving my dogs devils claw, turmeric, and MSM capsules to keep them comfortable as they got some arthritis. Amazon sells capsules, I have horse MSM which sells for maybe $10/pound and I buy the devils claw and turmeric in bulk. A slice of american cheese will wrap 2 doses of up to 3-4 capsules. To give Toby his heart worm pill which is supposed to be appealing on its own takes a whole piece of cheese but he gulps the capsules wrapped in cheese right down.

Little tuxedo-cat Oreo was rarely one to sleep with me. Then came the day I had a tooth extraction. They'd used global anesthetic on me, as I requested, and Miss Linda had to get me home in a taxi. I crawled into bed, and darned if Miss Oreo didn't hop right up next to me and curl up. She stayed until I got up later that day, then went back to sleeping out on the couch. Almost as if she wanted to see why I was behaving so oddly.
