6 I just figured out what the bush plant is that my cats go crazy over. I always had to shoo them away because I didn’t know if it was toxic.

Texas sage bush. Not toxic and dogs ,cats and horses can eat with no ill effects but weirdly it’s a deer repellent .

18 Pet thread makes my Saturday!

Daisy dog had a vet visit yesterday, for teeth cleaning and nail clipping. Came home and was an uncharacteristically groggy doggy. A good night's sleep and she was up early and back to her regular habits today. Yay.

Ony cat has seemingly become a tad more tolerant of the dog. Hasn't hissed in days, but, then, Dog hasn't been doing the yipping and play-bowing that freaks Ony out. Don't think they'll ever be snuggle buddies. We figure Ony is about 20 now. Daisy isn't quite four, probably. They have a generational gap.

19 I had one kitten choose me but I gave him to a neighbor lady as I wasn’t ready to take care of a pet at the time. Working a lot so I could retire early. I would have kept him though if no one else stepped up.

You have to prepare it properly to avoid brucellosis, leptospirosis, and trichinosis that they can carry but yes they can be good to eat.

26 Wild pigs are a scourge on the North Shore of Oahu -- a tasty scourge. One tore up a neighbor's beautifully landscaped yard, so she called a local father-and-son hog hunting team and they summarily dispatched it, but not before the son got his leg sliced by the tusk. But they had a nice pig roast that evening!

Lucy the Fink is napping in her kitty hammock overlooking her courtyard. She snores and grumbles in her sleep sometimes. It's so silly.

Got to go to the grocery store. We both need some food for the week ahead. Of course, she would be happy with tuna every day. But I don't suppose that would be good for her.

39 On a field training exercise in Hawaii, I recall some idiot left a sealed case of MREs laying about overnight.

Well the next morning, it looked like it contained a bomb. A wild hog knew what they were apparently, and at a nice big muddy hole in the side of this double-boxed confection, and through the thick plastic of the individual meals, the boxes, the mylar retort pouches, spreading wrappers and garbage far and wide. I was impressed, I guess. I bet that fucker didn't shit for a week.

Both Stirling and Dagny were sharing my nap just now. Normal for Stirling, unusual for the little Siberian.

As for cats choosing me, I'd guess Angelique, the first Siberian I knew, chose me. She came up to me in an empty parking lot in '03 as I was drying my car, crying a clear "I need human help NOW!", and jumped into the car with me. Maybe it was not so much that she chose me as that she made a beeline for the first human she saw.

Most of my other cats have shown a preference for my company -- Arizona the big red tabby, little tuxedo-coat Oreo, great black Wolf, and Stirling here. Of course I was the one who made food magically appear, too.

46 Best friend texted me this morning that his Yorkie passed away in the night. He'd taken her to vet Wednesday for a cough. They diagnosed her with congestive heart failure and gave him some meds. Said the she was acting fine yesterday.

For the next dog, my wife wants a dog that will behave and follow her around the house and not be too high energy.

I have suggested a female hunting dog (like a Brittany Spaniel) since they are smart, and bond very well to their humans. That idea has not gone over well.

When neighbor was moving out of neighborhood told my friend, "you may as keep him since she likes you better than us." My friend said Ok and asked what do you feed her? I have some pet spiders outside. Spidey has built a large web on the porch within a fairly large arch. I discovered the web by accidentally walking into part of it, but dude rebuilt. He's a pretty big spider; I've seen him in the middle of his web.

There's a large web between 2 trees so i'm avoiding mowing that area. Haven't seen the spider.

And there's a little baby spider with a tiny web in some tree branches.

We're all coexisting nicely....so we're good.

And the dog Alphy is doing very well too...

53 Thunder is grumbling here after a hot sunny morning. I mention it because Stirling never worries about those sounds -- at least he doesn't hide. Yet when he hears fireworks, outside and at a distance, he slinks under the bed until it all goes away. So much for the Confident Kitten he seemed to be until he was about nine months old and heard NYE fireworks.

Dagny never seems bothered by either source of noise.

Heh, a chiweenie. Mine is wonderful - sweet-tempered, loves to go for walks and play, but just as happy snuggling and napping. Super-friendly with people and other dogs when out, protective at home. Mine is generally not yappy, but he can get really wound up by the squirrels in the back yard sometimes.

In my experience, all-black cats are the most easygoing and adaptable. Whoever adopts him will probably have a great buddy.

P. I.: two of the nicest dogs I have known in my life were Brittany spaniels and the other nicest dog was half cocker spaniel. Both Brittany's were male and had absolutely lovely dispositions and were so good around people. All three were excellent companions. That's just my two cents worth. The larger they get meat gets pretty rank
The big ones here get shot and drug to the back for the coyotes and they make th e pigs move their feeding ground
Just remember if you are going to eat it you have to process it right then

67 I did an overnight camping trip and took Jake with me. When I got home, Mr Trouble was so happy to see me. He came in and laid in my lap for pets.

I found Fanny's latest hiding place and told her I was back. She was like "oh, okay". Did finally get up later in the day for pets.

My local SPCA is like that too, and in '22 they were still demanding you put on a face diaper as well. That was why I started looking farther afield on Petfinder. My search turned up the future Stirling (and his sisters) in Vicksburg -- a four-hour drive. But they had no nonsense about appointments or masks.

69 One daughter still works at our main animal shelter. She checks the pens and website frequently to recommend pets to her friends and relatives.

I think it is easier to predict the traits of pure bred dogs, but those are rare or troubled at the shelter.

However, most mutts have good dispositions in my experience.

I should have mentioned that I probably need a medium-sized dog. I take the dogs out to our farm on some of my work days. There are coyotes, bobcats, and hawks all on the hunt while I am out there.

I used to have a brittany that was so smart that I could fell trees with her watching. She would sit wherever I put my gear (safe spot) as soon as the chainsaw was fired up. With the saw off and walking to the next project, she would happily range in front of me the entire time!

Yeah, except Ony's a gal. Doing pretty good for her age. She's like Vance's granny with six loaded pistols in the house.

Ony's got a bed on the floor in our closet. After a little Fetch in the hot sun, Daisy Dog went into the closet and is lying on the cool concrete floor next to Ony. Seems to be a demilitarized zone for them.

Before I could get them some, my wife closed the door on them and then blocked the door with her body. Message received.

Sure they are. I got this one and his twin brother one round 80 yards. The one I aimed at was broadside to me, the other was right on his other side so I didn’t even see him. Both head shots. Both around 125 lbs. We made sausage of them. No dachshunds were harmed.

77 Wow, our shelter is much different than some of you are lamenting.

My daughter goes in and helps set up the "cat room". There are multiple cat towers and semi-hiding places in a large, glassed-in room. Humans can just walk in to the room and see which cats come to visit, which cats are a little timid but will happily purr if gently placed on a warm lap, etc. She just has to keep an eye out for cat fights (rare), hairballs on the carpet, and other things that might discourage humans from spending time in the cat room. (Which usually results in an adoption.)

They also have a winding circuitous hallway of dog rooms. Those generally have 2-6 dogs on display. No appointment needed to wander the hallway. You do need a volunteer to bring a dog to you in the outdoor or indoor "dog visiting" areas.

I live in a medium-sized city. Right now they are down to six cats and 18 dogs for adoption. (My daughter says there are always more in the back getting prepped for adoption.) I think we achieve a zero kill rate on young, healthy animals. I am not sure how they manage to leave out from the count the older or obviously abused animals that I know they do receive.
