Things fall apart

arizona mooon.jpg

Serene Moonlight in Arizona

How about those opening ceremonies?

Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it

Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

WEEKEND

Nice short video on good intentions vs. incentives with that C.S. Lewis quote on moral busybodies at the end.

*

When you have a little time, read this great post and the links from Sgt. Mom:

Revenge, as the old saying has it, is a dish best served cold. And revenge may not be the only – or the most dangerous – platter best dished up chilled. That would be the dish of anger – that ice-cold, sullen reservoir of fury in the hearts of every right-of-center, non-elite, law-abiding flyover-country middle American with Tea Partyish inclinations … a dish of anger ready to serve up in the wake of a just-barely unsuccessful political assassination attempt this last weekend.

You see, there is a considerable difference between hot fury and cold. . .

The linked story about Old San Francisco is especially interesting.

* * * * *

Quotes

Wretchard is on a roll:

A republic was a type of govt where majority rule was checked by sacred tenets derived from God or civilization embodied in a constitution. "Our democracy" is a type of government without sacred tenets where you make the right choice once and never again.

The operational difference is that a republic is always limited in principle, by something external, even if that external power is vague. "Our democracy" by contrast is limited only by what the vanguard can get away with.

Music

It's part of the Moonlight Sonata, 3rd Movement. Piano Sonata No.14 "Moonlight" in C sharp minor, Op.27-2 III Movement : Presto Agitato.
Nice performance of the 3rd movement at the link above, especially toward the end, which doesn't seem as "agitato" to me as the very beginning of the movement.

Such was the furor of the Moonlight’s finale that several of the piano strings snapped and became entangled in the hammers during the work’s premiere. Indeed, in the declining years of his hearing, Beethoven was known to play with a heavy hand, likely so that he could better hear the music.

And here's the entire Sonata. Of course, the first movement is the one that most people learn if they start to play Beethoven, and the one that evokes moonlight:

admired particularly for its mysterious, gently arpeggiated, and seemingly improvised first movement. The piece was completed in 1801, published the following year, and premiered by the composer himself, whose hearing was still adequate but already deteriorating at the time. The nickname Moonlight Sonata traces to the 1830s, when German Romantic poet Ludwig Rellstab published a review in which he likened the first movement of the piece to a boat floating in the moonlight on Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne. Beethoven dedicated the work to Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, a 16-year-old aristocrat who was his student for a short time.

The Moonlight Sonata was structurally and stylistically remarkable in its day. . .

Without the fancy graphics, or much facial expression

Here's a photo of a hotel on Lake Lucerne. Those little windows in the roof are typical of Switzerland. Often opened during the day, at least in the summertime. This photo was taken during the cold season, hence the lack of window boxes.

Rampant degeneracy.

I don't understand why something like the Olympics is copyrighted at all. It's a worldwide event paid for with host country taxpayer money. Seems to me that shit be automatically public domain.

10 They do things like that at the Olympics for the same reason US professional sports do: the fans keep tuning in. At some point, the fans just have to admit to themselves that they're okay with it, because they are.

I don’t watch the Rose Parade either (growing up my sisters would insist on watching that new years morning… I just wanted to get to the football games). So I’m glad to say I missed whatever nonsense occurred….. I do enjoy track and field and wrestling so I’ll try to watch those events….

Listening to the podcast right now and your conversation about election systems and election integrity...

Remember we had a discussion similar to this after the 2022 election.

I was listening to Poso on Tucker and he said something that is pretty profound.

"The point of a system is what the system does"

In his point he was talking about Communism. If the result of Communism is the murder of 100 million people, it's because the intent of Communism is the murder of 100 million people.

But it applies the things like election systems as well. If the result of an election process is lack of transparency, integrity, and simplicity, that is because that is the point of the system. The people running out don't want transparency, integrity, and simplicity.

He's so close here, within spitting distance. It's not about making the right choice permanently, it's about BEING RIGHT permanently. They truly feel they are the annointed ones, entitled to rule forever. And "what the vanguard can get away with" is why leninists are like cockroaches - this total focus on constantly evolving their simon-says bullshit. "Progressivism" isn't about progress towards something, it's about having ideological ants in your pants and constantly shifting positions so prog leaders are always jockeying for power, the mooks struggling to keep up, and the proles confused.

God may have said that he'll never being a great flood to the earth again, to wipe out his wayward children...but he certainly got close to it with that torrential downpour in France yesterday. Like he was trying to flush all of it into the Seine.

Snoop is one of the few things that is actually fun about the games and works for me. I watched the Olympic trials, and he had family competing. It sounds like his family is a track and field family. He's respectful of the sports, humble, funny, and has a great vibe. So he's better than all the snotty, pretentious NBC hosts combined.

I thought that if they had excised that whole runway bit and everything to do with it, it would have just been boring and dumb. Instead it was boring and dumb with a great big turd in the middle.

94 Nurse - making them unpaid slaves to the IOC who makes a great deal of money off their exploitation.

Which is not wholely true, since Olympic gold medals in many sports are worth a great deal in endorsements, but sticking to my original point.

The only way to change the system is to take the money from those who control the system. The only way that happens is for people to stop watching.

I am sympathetic to the athletes, but they are hostages to the system.

So I will chose to not watch any of it, including women's beach volleyball. That ceremony was offensive.

I have daughters. I'm not the slightest bit worried about whether sports are around for them to compete in or watch. I am very much concerned seeing lots of women passed over for job offers and promotions because the political commissars in HR want to virtue signal by hiring and promoting freaks instead. We are undergoing a massive purge of (real) women in many professions. I know of companies that claim to be 40% female, but they have like 200 fat men in dresses and about a dozen actual women left.

Fast forward to 2020 and I’m attending John MacArthur’s church in LA (during covid lockdowns). One Sunday I sat right behind a very athletic looking black man who engaged me in conversation…. We get up to sing the first hymn and I notice his name is engraved on the cover of his Bible: Vince Evans. One and the same! I didn’t fan mob him or even tell him he was a childhood hero… just left after the service. But it was a bit thrilling for me.,. Still looked like he could suit up and he’d have been early 60s….

I agree with your comment, but Merchan could still rule that the erroneous admission of Hicks' testimony was harmless error. He'd rather die than set Trump's conviction aside. He envisions this case as being his ticket to historic immortality.

A related point. In its recent ruling on the J6 cases, SCOTUS strongly criticized the govt for being "imaginative" in its use of criminal statutes & thereby overreaching. If there was ever a case where "imaginative & overreaching" practically leap off the page at you, it is the Braggs case.

One other thing. I've posted this before. Senior DOJ prosecutors do NOT go to a state court to prosecute a state case. Braggs' case isn't Braggs'! It's a Main Justice DOJ production. Ultimately, I don't think SCOTUS will let it stand, if it even gets that far.

I'm not even drawing a comparison.

Your question was why a Christian would participate in sports when they've become so twisted.

I suggested that they believe they're doing good. I would bet my mortgage that the number of people converted to Christianity after being exposed to a Christian athlete is greater than zero. That's good. That's victory.

Those conversations likely happened quietly though, without the fanfare of any opening ceremonies, and were therefore ignored by the press - but not by God.

Trump winning while incarcerated at Rikers will destroy down ballot races. Dems are hoping on current polling to hold AZ and OH. Lock up Trump and those seats are gone.

152 Sure there were some tasteless and stupid parts of the opening ceremonies, but nothing as embarrassing as what the Canadians have managed to put forth in previous Olympics. I give high marks for the imagination of some aspects of the ceremony, e.g. the torch balloon. I also commend the French for not having all French performers. The top two performances were by Lady Gaga (USA) and Celine Dion (CAN). Dion's was absolutely spectacular.

At least the closing ceremonies will feature

Posted by: Kumala Word Salad at July 27, 2024 11:33 AM (2beCy)

Technically it's just a snippet. The opening ceremonies was a sprawling, decentralized event along the seine. You had Lady Gaga and can can dancers in one section of the river, floating heads from the portraits in the louvre, minions stealing the Mona Lisa (since illumination studios is in France), acrobats at Notre dame, a light show at the Eiffel Tower, Celine Dion singing Piaf on the Eiffel Tower, La Marseillaise sung by an opera singer from from the roof of the Grand-Palais, parkour being done on the Paris roofs to get the torch to its location, phantom of the opera in the sewers, the catacombs, the subway, a French rapper singing on a barge in the river, etc.

My fave was the French metal band playing alongside Bizet being sung with a decapitated Marie Antoinette, I think to honor the way their republic was born in a moody, goth way.

It was a lot of stuff.

The drag runway was on one bridge, and meant to show off Paris being the epicenter of fashion. But the fashion show they decided to make will definitely overshadow all the rest.

192 Going to talk about the Electoral map, because I'm a one trick pony.

The reason Biden was replaced is because he was looking at an electoral blowout, there was no recovery from it. Trump was going to win all the battlegrounds, plus VA, MN, ME-state, ME-2, and NE-2. It also put NM and NH into tossup. Trump would finish with 343-352 EVs. That is such a huge win he would also get both houses and a mandate.

So now we get Harris, who was not Obama's first choice, but someone fucked him from the Biden team by tweeting the Biden endorsement last Sunday.

Looking at polls, Harris dord slight better than Biden. Trump's national lead drops from 3.4 to 2.3. Still a terrible situation, but maybe salvageable. The problem is she does worse with Ind and white working class. This makes winning WI and MI harder than it was for Biden. But they think she runs better in GA and AZ. As I said yesterday, the plan is for her to win GA, AZ, and PA, hold the blue states that were wavering, finish with 274.

Here is her serious problem :

GA polling average - Trump 47.9 Harris 43.1
AZ polling average - Trump 51.1 Harris 44.7
PA polling average - Trump 48.5 Harris 45.9

She has to win all 3 of them.

During the depths of the revolutionary war, Washington planned his garden in Monticello, a garden that if he was captured or killed, he'd never see. Dreams are important, they keep us going when everything feels dark.

Besides, sport CAN change the world. Are we not better off for Jesse Owens dreaming he could be an Olympian, and punching Hitler's totalitarian regime in the face at the Berlin games? Or USA hockey bringing us together when they defeated the Soviet Russians?

Sport is a symbol of other things going on in the world. It reflects the best and worst of humanity. The opening ceremonies showed the world both how good and how cringe we can be. Here's hoping the athletes turn things around and show humanity at our best.

217 I am not surprised at Kamala’s poll bounce and won’t panic just yet. She hasn’t been out there speaking. Well she did once, and has caused an international kerfluffle. They are madly scrubbing her history, which, if the RNC can keep its act together, will shout from the mountain tops right now, keeping it close to where the nation was mad about them lying to them about Joe. There needs to be nonstop noting they are lying AGAIN, and about what, which is a two for one.

219 Celine Dion's performance was on of the verfy few highlights of the opening ceremonies. Olympic flame cauldron suspended from hot air balloon was cool. Boating the athletes in was creative.

Lots of cringe moments in the rest. Among them was quick camera shot of Jill Biden clapping like a retarded seal when boat carrying US team pulled in, led by equally retarded BLM supporters Coco Gauf and LeBron as flagbearers. Hey Jill, remember you left your pedo husband and meal ticket alone and dying at home?

Is there a single retard anywhere in the country who was leaning Trump or undecided with Biden in the race, then they see Harris and they’re like “oh yeah, she’s the one!” I can’t believe such people exist….. these polls are for the sole purpose of pushing a narrative. In fact, I might conclude the polls were manipulated to make Biden’s position look impossible with the sake purpose of pushing him out…

Pls never hesitate to discuss the electoral map!

I confess that the post-Biden, now Kamala, polls are giving me wobbly knees.

Not really related much, but... I noticed Harris has just announced (via her spokesperson) that she's done a 180 on fracking. A principled and painful reversal, I'm sure.

Also, her surrogates are explaining that her 2020 recorded comments, in which she supported defunding the police, were 1) taken out of context, and 2) are now inoperative! Hakim Jeffries explained that that all she REALLY meant was that "policing can be both smart AND effective, as all of us believe."

Orwell must be giddy with delight.

I am going to think about that, because to a large degree, I agree. But...I still think a lot of it boils down to just...witchcraft.

One of my favorite examples: Marty Chokenheimer. I pick on him - RIP - BUT the man was a mad evaluator of talent, he got the most out of what he had, and clearly, he could put together a talented team. Consistently hitting 12-4, 13-3 records. THEN...into the playoffs, and John Elway or not, he could not close the sale. I can't help but wonder if he would have been more successful if he were in fact a team's GM or something along those lines. Good at the talent evaluation aspect but could not get it done in the end.

It is worth remembering that one of the things that made the Miracle Team of 1980 so remarkable was that those rag-tag college hockey players went up against a professonal, paid, Red Army hockey team whose job it was, in the Red Army...to play hockey. What did the IOC do about it? Jack shit. Because they sympathized to the commies. Note that the USSR whined and threw a tantrum in the early 1970s about Moscow getting an Olympics and the IOC gave Moscow the 1980 Games...hey, how did THAT turn out??? DO NOT GET ME STARTED on the men's basketball gold medal game in 1972...

Because the IOC let the camel's nose under the tent, it was only a matter of time before other pros jumped in. The whole reason the Dream Team came to be was that USA Basketball got sick and tired of every other Olympic Committee (Commies) sending their pros in and the IOC not doing a thing about it.

Schottenheimer was a good solid coach. He got too conservative in big games. As a result I believe his players tightened up and they’d choke.

I do not agree that Bill Belichick was only average or interchangeable. The game has changed in the last 5 years…. Before that he knew how to coach defense and put together masterful game plans. The game plan he devised to beat the greatest show on turf Rams was a master class. He is beyond his sell-by date now however

287 So, as much as I LOVE the idea of an all-amateur Olympics (really!) the reality is that a bunch of other Olympic Committees and the IOC do not share this view. And, if they did have a come to Jesus moment and decide to make the Olympics an all-amateur competition, EVERYONE - EVERYONE - has to be on board with it. When all the other Committees call off the dogs, I am 100% down with an all-amateur Olympics. Til then...

297 Donna - they are going to run on abortion yet again. Arguably it worked in 2022. The problem is that general election electorate is very different from a midterm.

With every election cycle I learn more, and that was one of my lessons from 2022.

The abortion message may be effictive down ballot and could keep us from picking up senate seats in AZ and OH if it isn't fought back on.

Trump has the right message and expressed it during the debate. It was overlooked because of the Biden trainwreck. But the senate candidates have to express it too.

People should demand proof instead of accepting shit at face value. Because I haven't heard a PEEP uttered about birth control. Or about IVF. Or about much else besides.

One of the best things about the overturning of Roe is the happy thought, in my mind, of 1) abortion not being used as a cavalier method of birth control and 2) people relearning civics and figuring out that the United States has a FEDERAL government, and not, like the Left so badly wants, a UNITARY government.

358 Also, if you study Yeats, you find out about "the gyre." It's his weird metaphysical concept of time and history, with two interlocking spirals, kind of like a strand of DNA, but in opposition, so one grows wider as the other grows narrower. It's very odd and mystical and Irish.

359 328 Harris doesn't have to win AZ and GA.

She could lose both and go over 270.
-----
I've double checked this a couple times. If Harris gives up on WI and MI, they are at 226

AZ gets them to 237
GA gets them to 253
PA gets them to 272

They can't lose any of them.

362 Saw that Ben Had.

Netanyahu warned that Hezbollah "will pay a heavy price for this attack, one that it has not paid so far."

363 Hit post too soon.

"There is no doubt that Hezbollah has crossed all the red lines here, and the response will reflect that," Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz told Israeli Channel 12. "We are nearing the moment in which we face an all-out war."

364 olddog, unfortunately there are those in the military echelon that are still in proportional response mode. Hamas has already rejected the latest proposals before they have even seen them.

365 I just got a 24 hour ban for commenting at YouTube on account of "hate speech". How do I find out what they are actually reacting to?
