Snakes - Copy.jpg

Greetings Pet and Animal Enthusiasts,

Just a few photos I hope you enjoy.

First up is Rocky, a Banded Rock who we raised literally from an egg. His father was Cogburn (some may get that). He's a great rooster and keeps everyone in line around the property.

Next up is Chickadee who I found wandering the parking lot of where I work. Same place I found our cat Bo. She grew up to be a pretty hen.

The ducks. Crested, Indian Runner (they always stand like that), and the Yard Runner ducks. I think the Crested and Indian Runners are conspiring something, but they always stop talking when I walk up. And we have a hen that now identifies as a Duck.

Next is our newest edition to the farm from just a few weeks ago. We just happened to see him in and around the chicken coop and scooped him up. He was really tiny and the vet told us he couldn't have been more than five weeks old. We looked around for possibly more but found no others. He is fitting in well and has become quite accomplished at aggravating the other cats. We have recently named him Zippy as he ziiiiiippppppps all over the house on a regular basis.

And finally, what would living out in the country be without a few slithery types. The one on the left, Black Snake, was pulled from the chicken coop partaking in a free egg. I don't mind them so much as they keep the rodent population under control. The second, not so nice to have around. A Timber Rattler one of the cats came across and held at bay until we could make sure he wouldn't be an issue any longer.

That's all for now, hope you enjoy. I always look forward to all the great photos in the Pet Thread each week.

Sua Sponte

Great assortment of birds! Great stories to go with them. Love the hen who identifies as a duck.

And Zippy!!!!

I don't mind the black snake so much, but the rattler does not qualify as a "pet" for me.

Hi Guys,

Long time Lurker and reader for I can't imagine how long from across the pond here. Wanted to share these two photos with you. The luminescently beautiful Calico is Muse, a Romanian rescue who will attempt to eat anything up to and including the tongue of my walking boots, which I wouldn't mind too much except that she has a tendency to do so whilst I'm still wearing them. She had terrible dental and stomach problems when she came to us two years ago, and we have spent a small fortune on getting her medical issues straight and to the point where checkups draw comments like 'How is the same cat I saw last year?'. And I really mean it about the small fortune. As my mother says, you never meet a poor veterinarian. She still suffers from a lot of food insecurity, which makes life difficult when her counterpart is a finicky madam who views more than half a dozen pieces of kibble at a time as a heavy meal. They have to be watched like hawks, which is sadly something my beloved wife is far better at than myself, which means Muse often gets extras.

Our other beloved feline is Mittens, who usually photographs magnificently, but does also have a resting face which is very similar to the French cartoon version of Tom. The attached photo cracks me up every time I look at it, and hopefully will have the same effect on you. She is a very fraidy cat indeed, and we have strong suspicions that she was a bit of a rescue herself without us knowing it at the time. Five years and she has still only got up on our laps a handful of times, but does love to snuggle into bed between us and purr like a Harley Davidson without ever actually touching anything but the duvet.

Keep up the good work guys. Morons and Lurkers forever.

Best,

Carl

Gorgeous cats, wonderful photos and introductions. Thanks for sending them to us!

Hi!

From the scene of the now famous critter in the vent, here is what started it - Sabi (brown) and Kovu (black) looking intently at whatever was scratching around in there. Sabi and Kovu have been featured before, they are both F2 Savannah Cats and a bundle of crazy!

Piper

So the movie got crazier from there . . . . Great photo of great cats!

9 Better than getting run over I guess. Neighbor let two dogs into the property walled yard. Beautiful young Huskies. Somehow both knew my face needed licking. They just showed up. Too clean to be fireworks runaways on fourth. Neighbor took them to city shelter. If I had more $, more room and a car, I would have fallen under their spell.

19 The cat, Eva, went to the vet this morning for a possible lingering UTI. She passed a bit of blood yesterday. I don't know the exact diagnosis as Daughter was the one involved but Eva was given Veraflox = Pradofloxacin, an antibiotic similar to Cipro? One a day for a while. She is very good at the vet, explores the room, happily sits in the ultrasound enclosure, etc. Not phased at all. Others will be terrified. Our best cat was Gizmo who passed not so long ago. We could do anything to him, even wipe and medicate his eyes and he never flinched. Absolute trust. Beautiful big boy.

35 St Kieran and the fox:

Stories & Legends of St. Kieran
Kieran & A Fortunate Fox
One day as Kieran was watching the cattle some distance from the home of deacon Justus, Kieran realized he was able to hear his tutor’s instruction as closely as if he were in Justus’ house. On another occasion, while Kieran was out in the cattle pasture, a fox emerged from the forest and approached him. He treated the animal gently, so that it returned quite often. Kieran asked the fox to do him the favor of carrying his text of the Psalms back and forth between him and Justus. One day, however, the fox was overcome by hunger, and began to eat the leather straps that covered the book. While the fox was eating, a hunting party with a pack of hounds attacked him. The dogs were relentless in their pursuit, and the fox could not find shelter in any place except the cowl of Kieran’s robe. God was thus glorified twice – by the book being saved from the fox, and by the fox being saved from the hounds.

While they were gone we fed, watered, etc. their two cats. The older cat is 21 and, although he's very healthy for his age, I was worried that he'd expire while they were gone. (I even got instructions "just in case.")

Well, all went well and the old guy actually was waiting for us when we arrived each time and was rubbing on us and purring when we came over. What at sweet boy!

Poisonous would be something that would kill if eaten - a toadstool for example (Amanita muscaria).
Venomous means the bite or sting is bad for you - rattler, stone fish, scorpion.

50 As for the cats on guard against the critter in the vent: My current big black, Stirling, proved his value several times in his first summer when wasps began to show up inside my place. I'd see him stiffen and "point" up toward something I didn't know was there. Twice I turned to see a wasp crawling around the light under the stove hood; and later, one crawling on a picture frame only a foot or so from my head. I dispatched them, gave Stirling treats, and proceeded to seal up the space around the vent pipe that they apparently used to get in.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at July 20, 2024 04:21 PM (omVj0)

51 46 Is there a difference between poisonous and venomous?

I want to rephrase that:
----
Poisonous would be something that would kill if eaten - a toadstool for example (Amanita muscaria) or Australia.
Venomous means the bite or sting is bad for you - rattler, stone fish, scorpion, or Australia.

That's better.

54 My two -- the Killer Kittenz From Outer Space, as JQ spells it -- are doing well. Dagny, La Siberienne, has actually consented to sit next to me on the couch this week and to sprawl on the bathroom counter while I'm brushing my teeth. Stirling still sleeps with me, and likes to curl in my lap when I'm on the couch as well -- sometimes 3-4 times a day on a weekend.

Dagny is still small compared to Stirling. The other day, looking at her, I realized that while she may fill out some more in the next couple of years, she is no longer a kitten and is done with her major growth. She's all in proportion now, paws and ears, just as he is.

Fortunately most of them are even more scared of us and will quietly slink away without being noticed. Except puff adders - sluggish, so you step on them and then of course they bite! It's a viper. Dangerous. Very venomous. Very common.

66 Deadly nightshade, Atropa belladonna from which we get Atropine, an alkaloid useful to dilate pupils and also an antidote to some insecticides and nerve poisons (war gases). 75 72 Just got in from the lake. Both cats are in a mood. Bella is pissed I won't let her hang out in the garage. Betty's running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Then comes between my legs for ear scritchens and takes off again. Cats are weird.

76 Why is everyone so afraid of stinging insects? They are quite distinct. A hornet is not a yellow jacket, a wasp is not a bee. Their behaviors are as different from each other as they are towards us, I don't GROK (!) why people can't tell them apart.
The hornet popped me did it likely out of surprise, he didn't clamp on and dig in for multiple hits.

Still a little shit but I think it was just an unexpected encounter. Yellow jackets are bad business, but the rest? Largely innocuous.

81 My dog story: Blue The Cattledog was an incorrigible thief. He'd race in when groceries were brought in, get his treat, then SEEMINGLY retreat. He was watching. He disappeared once, into the basement, and I thought nothing of it until the jar of crunchy peanut butter was missing.

83 Last night went to sleep with Shadow, my 20lb tabby (a bit of Maine coon in there). Woke up at 5am with Shadow on my chest. But I love him. He could lick any of the other cats just by sitting on them but he's a pacifist so he gets pushed around. One of Astrid's two babies now an adult, Houdini, loves him and follows him around, rubs against him, etc. so he does have admirers.

Unless you are allergic like me. Fire ants put me in in the hospital when we were stationed in Cuba. A bee sting to me has the potential to be a life changing event. Liquid benadryl is my friend.

How many people, percentage wise, are actually allergic to stings, and a fire ant isn't a hornet. Honestly it's like the Asberger Syndrome. Everyone's allergic to stings. I worked outside construction for decades not one single guy was phased by a sting. It hurt yeah but seriously.

Chief Gunners Mate drinking buddy who pulled a pair of pantyhose out his girlfriend’s lab’s butt. Dog was running by and the buddy saw he was dragging something from his stern, he promptly set his foot down on it, dog kept running. Girlfriend asked what the dog yelped about, and why are you laughing.

I think kitties get amped up for a couple days before the full moon. Kinda like the crazy people. Have you ever been in an ER during a full moon? Bah humbug to people who say there's no correlation between lunatics and the lunar cycle.

So just because you have never encountered a person who is allergic to venomous insects means they don't exist?

I guess you think people with nut or shellfish allergies are also being overly dramatic?

105 Hi Ben Had!

It's a lipoma and it's about the size of a large marble. The skin is quite taut and dry. I've been trying to moisturize with olive oil, but that makes her want to lick lick lick it off.

It's not harmful and seems to bother me more that her. But the skin gets crusty.

107 I have two rescue dogs I inherited from my mother. I call the smaller dog "wee one" or Skipper. She's a rat terrier, resembles a Jack Russell but less athletic and not a total spaz.

I think she has a history of abuse. She trembles sometimes and she tends to startle when you touch her, however good your intentions may be.

I took her on a road trip, and she got stressed-out and sick. She licked her feet too much and had no pep. Her eye looked swollen, so I took her to the vet.

It turned out she had some kind of ulcer on the top of her head. They drained it and I had to administer a round of big antibiotic pills. The first time I tried it she bit me half to death.

She ended up making a solid recovery and I achieved a good physical rapport with her. Her paws are better and she jumps around like a happy dog now.
