Best of luck to an impressive pup! FIIGMO here, regular reader, occasional commenter, so I am uncertain about Moron/Lurker status. Perhaps The Horde has some tips. This is my Bella, about age 15 years. Tearfully my daughter and I had to say goodbye to her on June 3rd. Her body began to fail rapidly and on an early Monday morning, she had a seizure and I knew that it was time. This was done by a local Vet who came to our home and we held her as she went on to her beautiful new world. She loved food/treats and swims in the Colorado River. She had an enduring friendship with our house cats and any human she met. She was my constant comfort during the worst time in my life when we lost our son and was a daily reminder of the simple beauty and love that our pets give us freely without reservation. Sorry for your loss, Cheri. Bella was a beautiful pup.
We finally got hit with the heat wave. 101 today with 18mph wind. Will be hotter the next two days, then cool a bit. The AC has been fixed. Mr Trouble has not been coming in. I wet down a paper towel and get him wet a couple of times during the day. I take Jake out early in the day. I am planning to take him camping with me for an overnighter next week, when the heat breaks. Posted by: Notsothoreau at July 13, 2024 03:37 PM (xjTDL) 10

I somewhat reluctantly put a bark collar on Paisley. She is vocal and my landlord was complaining. So I got one that vibrates. It doesn't hurt her but it annoys her.
And it works. She still barks but she is much quieter. Oddly it appears to have made her much more clingy. She really wants to be near me. Posted by: Northernlurker , wondering where his phone is at July 13, 2024 03:43 PM (ZDrQf) 12

I've got a feral black cat in my yard right now, asleep in the garden. I like it and have tried to approach it but it runs off. It's a young cat that likes to bring a (mostly dead) mouse into my back yard and tosses the poor thing up in the air, only to catch it again. This goes on for an hour or so.
And then, crunch. No more head of mouse. Posted by: gourmand du jour at July 13, 2024 03:48 PM (MeG8a) 16

Afternoon, pet folken! I type this on my couch with the small Siberian cat known as Dagny close by. She did not sleep with me just now (Stirling the black cat did), but I found her curled up on the couch between the two small cushions. She's moved a bit now and is grooming. Miss Linda says she is getting a bit more cuddly, though I haven't seen it, not with me.
Okay, I spoke too soon. She's come back and curled right behind my elbow to finish her grooming. Maybe when she's older, and we live in a climate with winter, she'll actually become a lap cat. Ruby George playing with the fawn -- d'awww!
Our Daisy the overly affectionate Malinois only knows grown deer, as something to chase. We haven't had bunnies for many years, and suddenly this summer we have several. Watching from inside the house, Daisy is either on-point alert or barking loudly, depending on how near the bunny is. Walked her — on a leash — down to the west pasture. Two big bunnies dashed off as we got close. Daisy was thwarted by the gate, and the leash, but realllly wanted to chase them. Back up at the shed, she was sniffing eagerly around a woodpile, and scared up a bunny too stupid to just stay hidden under the wood. Daisy tried to give chase and, even though I was expecting it, nearly pulled me over. Had some tussle getting her to walk on with us. You could see her conflict, obedience to us vs. instinct to chase. We've tried to tell her we like bunnies, don't chase them, but I don't think it's working. On the other hand, bunnies being prolific little rodents, maybe we should just let her try to keep the population down. Like the squirrel she killed recently, could help feed the turkey vultures, nature's corpse janitors. Life in the country. Posted by: mindful webworker - who chased roger rabbit? at July 13, 2024 04:19 PM (CYhNu) 39
Regarding retiring: I want to avoid the move my office is due to make this year. Not only do I not want to walk in bad weather the extra distance or pay hundreds for nearer parking, I don't want to be the one to organize the move, as I would have to be. My boss says the administration may insist we move in mid-August. I was going to give him a month's notice at the *end* of August. Maybe I'll have to change that plan.

Posted by: Puddleglum, drive by meow at July 13, 2024 *** True. Big Arizona the part-Coon was rarely one to sit in my lap; but he was always nearby, slept with me at night, and apparently missed me when I had to leave him with Miss Linda when I first moved to Denver. Tatiana was not a lapster either, but I was her favorite playmate. Dagny is just less . . . demonstrative than I'm used to. She likes us and trusts us, though, and is usually found in the living room when I'm up. Compared to Stirling's companionship, she gives me the impression sometimes that I don't quite live up to her high standards for a human servant. I tried out a support harness for Ajax from OneTigris (off amazon.) Seems to work well and he did not mind it too much. Only downside is that it covers enough of the body and his coat is thick enough that he got hot wearing it. Thinking of getting one of the much smaller half harnesses for his rear end- since that is where he needs it the most with his back legs getting weaker.

We went through a bit of a learning curve with our Luna when we introduced her to her e-collar. We tried it mostly for aggression but also for barking. I was very much against it at first, but now it is clear that it was a good solution for her. After a couple of weeks of training, now I only have to vibrate her occasionally when I can see her "erupting." We now get compliments on how well-behaved our dog is! I missed posting during the conversation last week about UTIs but wanted to offer an anecdotal solution adopted by Clan Hrothgar,
Had a female French Bulldog (what else?) that had recurrent UTI's. HWife did some sleuthing and found a recommendation for a "natural" solution. We decided to give it a try and never had another UTI. Basically, we just added a scant capful of Apple Cider Vinegar to every meal (we used Bragg's because they've been around so long, but not saying that brand is necessary). Eleven years plus with one female and three (male) dogs later, still not another UTI at Hovel Del Hrothgar! Thank you all for your beautiful words re: Bella. Thank you also to KT for putting this all together.

Willowed but I think getting a puppy as you get older depends on the breed and temperament. I would stick to a small to smallish medium sized dog with a more docile personality. I think my last dog will be another Cavalier.
