Ace of Spades Pet Thread, July 6

cat will only stay a few days.jpg

* * *

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Independence Day brings some not-so-safe-and-sane fireworks to our neigborhood, and while our dogs don't freak out as much as some of our big ones used to, they still want to sleep with us. They are normally not allowed on the bed, but the medium-sized one tunneled under the bed, and the little one wanted to sleep on the pillow, on top of my head.

dog just warming bed.jpg

Hope you didn't have any fireworks "adventures" with your animals.

Is this accurate?

Some dogs were just meant to swim.

Meet The PetMorons

3 doxxies.jpg

From Jewells:

These three cuties are the newest addition to Shep's. Again, they went straight to foster so I'll never get to meet them darn it! Maudie is 12, Augie is 11 and Chug is 8. Their owner passed away. We are hoping to adopt all three out together.

What adorable doxies! And they are not all the same. Thanks for sending the great photo, Jewells!

There was a sad late entry to the comments on last week's post:

I had to put my best friend down today. It had gotten to where she could barely breath and she could no longer swallow. Her nose was dry and cracked from dehydration and she gagged and drooled all morning. She tried to eat grass but I had to pull it out by hand as she was choking on a ball of grass as big as my fist. It was time.

I got her just a few months after my wife left in 2010 and took my boys. She was my only real friend during the lowest period of my life. She was my constant companion and kept me warm at night. She was 18 months old then. She would have turned 15 years old in August. I could not continue to watch her drop weight and slowly, painfully make it up the steps one at a time because of the arthritis in her shoulders any longer. She always really enjoyed eating and, finally, this morning, she couldn't even do that anymore. I finally realized I was being selfish because I couldn't bear to let her go. It was time to man up and say goodbye. I will never forget my little girl and the unflinching loyalty and happiness she brought me when I needed it the most.

-Autumn's daddy

So sorry for your heartbreaking loss. It was time. Hope you check in here from time to time.

16 Afternon, Pet Folken!

A hot Saturday afternoon, and I'm thinking of walking over to the nearby library. Another endless and pointless meeting about the fate of the near-ghetto apartments I live in, but they may have news of new owners.

Anyway! I love the cat breed chart, and that they set "Black Cat" into its own category. Siberian is there too -- which is unusual, as a lot fo people still have not heard of the breed. When I say I have a Siberian I append "cat" so they won't think I have a Husky dog.

Autumn's Daddy, know that we have all been where you are. I too hesitated, with big white-and-black Chekov cat in late '21 and early '22, since we had no diagnosis and he rallied from time to time (only to slip back further than before). He was 14.5 when he went into the Long Sleep. I miss him still.

My mother's 12-year-old cat Lil Bit was left stranded when Mom passed away. She, the cat I mean, was terrified of strangers as well. Neighbors left food for her before I could finally scoop her into a box and take her home. I barely saw her for three solid weeks; she ate and used the litter box, but no more. Until Christmas Day -- when she trotted out, no hesitation, and leaped into my lap. I really think she was in shock as the loss of Her Human, and took that long to adjust to me and a new place as well.

18 Oh, and Stirling, the Once Brave Kitten, was scared again by distant fireworks on Thursday night. We'd given him some calming chews, which are mostly melatonin, Miss Linda says, and he gobbled them right up. But he still slunk out of the living room and hid, probably under the bed, for about two hours.

19 Autumn's Daddy - I feel your loss. It was very dusty for a while and then there was something in my eyes and I had to find the tissue box. Those stories are always poignant, so sad but sweet too as we imagine that life lived. She's waiting for you so be a good boy and then you'll see her again.

28 All our dogs being little dogs (that i grew up with), they loved going under the bed anyway. But - even if they heard thunder - they began running under the bed like nobody's business, in a mad panic. All, that is, except my first dog, the first dog I could remember, anyway. He was a toy poodle I swore suffered from puppy claustrophobia. He NEVER went under ANYTHING but the ceiling and the sky.

30 As many of you may know, my wife has a home business babysitting greyhounds. We have a long term guest right now as his owners are on vacation in New Zealand. He is a bit of a knucklehead.

He was outside for the post-dinner turnout yesterday. I looked away to shoo the other dogs out of the kitchen and he found that to be the perfect time to charge to the door. Which was closed.

Basically, he hit the mat on the floor and bonked his head on the glass door. No damage to door or dog and I think he was more confused than hurt. And now I make sure that I keep an eye on him when it's time to bring the dogs in.

32 Grew up with a Chinchilla Persian that we got after her owner died. The owner was an elderly lady. Took a while for Prescious to warm up to us, but she did. She lived till about 16 or so. A few months of hiding but eventually came out and was a wonderful kittuh. Pretty kittuh too. For the rest of her life, she would check on us during the night to make sure we were still breathing. Just jump on the bed, stroll up to our heads, and sniff, then jump down. I'll have to see if I have a picture of her somewhere. She was a beauty.

I had a cat that got UTIs. I finally pulled all dry food and only gave her wet food. Add about a spoonful of water to the food. Cats don't have a big thirst drive. In the wild they get a lot of fluid from their food. Push water and if they can't urinate it's an emergency.
You are talking about a cat, right?

(Disclaimer: I'm not a vet) More water, add wet food and frequent potty breaks. And consider calling an emergency vet as well and asking if Bailey should be brought in now.

38 Autumn's Daddy - trust me, the most depressing days of my life were the days when I lost my dogs.

At the end of November 2012, I was heading to San Antonio after busting my ass all day at work to go to the AT&T Center in San Antonio for a Rush concert. So I was geeked as all get out. Then I got to the concert, and saw I had a text from my mom. "We had to put Oreo to sleep a short while ago. Too sick to save." Not even 10 years old yet. That took the wind out of my sails.

42 Cranberry helps with UTIs too, I gave my cat cranberry supplement everyday. They came in a clear capsule like vitamin E and I cracked it open and put some on a saucer and my cat would eat it, the other cat didn't like it but the one with UTIs would eat it. My vet suggested it to help the cat.

44 Pynchon the black cat wants to go out. It's terribly humid and about 97 degrees, I said "No". I think I need to get a baby gate by the door because he sits by the door and he's so fast he rushes out as soon as the door is opened. Sometimes if the door is not completely closed he pries it open with his claws and goes out.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 06, 2024 04:13 PM (2Pt7J)

45 Blockage is less likely if a female. You can check to see if the bladder is full. I'd try for an emergency vet if possible. That's a long wait.

Losing Spark hit me very hard. With an older dog, the memory of their youth and vigor is a comfort, but when a young puppy with its whole life ahead of it dies suddenly it's particularly tragic.

52 Last Saturday evening, I put our cats, mother and daughter, into their sleeping space, and fed them. They dug right in to their food. Sunday morning, I opened the door, and the mom dashed out, as usual, but the daughter didn't. Didn't even see her, which was most unusual. Found her. She had thrown up her mostly-digested dinner, obviously drunk some of her water, thrown that up, thrown up some foam, went to her favorite sleeping spot, lay down, and died.
She was 6 years old. We buried her in our backyard, with 2 other cats and 2 dogs.
RIP, Moxy.

53 Got a bit of a surprise on the 4th. We adopted Precious the Bichon a year ago in late July. The animal rescue had her listed as deaf or nearly deaf. (We've concluded she is not hard of hearing, just hard of listening.) Some idiot neighbors were shooting off fire crackers and rockets. They are idiots because it is so dry. Fire crackers started a fire and burned down three homes in a nearby town.

The sound of the explosions scared her when outside. She loves going for walks but she actually tugged on the leash to get back inside quickly. This is her first 4th of July with us. Thunder doesn't bother her but the percussive sound of the fireworks sure did. It took the next day before she felt good about going out again. Who knew?

57 Ciampino--

Another OTC supplement that works for human UTIs is D-Mannose. I keep it around for my occasional human UTIs and got into the fix as you are with my dog. Some research said that you can give D-mannose to a dog so I figured that at least it wouldn't hurt her. After a couple of capsules, she was back to normal--with no antibiotics.

There are reviews on Amazon for people who have used D-Mannose for cats but I can't speak from personal experience. I think the dosage for a cat would have to be pretty small.

68 8 -- My oldest son works apartment maintenance. He noticed one of the tenants walking a Sheltie a couple times a day. One day, the other tenants began complaining about a foul odor. Yup, the guy had died in bed and the Sheltie was huddled next to him. The Humane Society was called. My son asked if he could have the dog if no family claimed her. Three days later, my son was the proud owner of the most neurotic, obnoxious, nasty tempered Shetland Sheepdog in the world.

So, there really is hope for these left behinds. If they are lucky, they get adopted by someone like my son, his wife, and their daughter. They spoiled her more than even her original owner had.

I have the ashes of two of my pet buddies. Don’t know why I did that because I really enjoy remembering when they were young. I miss them all, especially my sweet NOVA dog and Sylvester the worlds smartest cat.

72 There are plenty of kittehs and doggehs in shelters that you can give hope and live and a home to. Don't pass them up.

73 Slow thread today. I went over to the library to see about the tenants' rights meeting. No new owners for the dump, and most people just want to sit there and complain -- no real action. I came back home.

It's about time I took the feline monsters' food out of the fridge and ran some water in their bowls to clean them out. I can tell. They're awake and chasing each other around.

After Chekov was gone in early '22, when I was ready I started looking at Petfinder. I like the longhaired cats, and there was nothing in shelters close by. It took widening the search to four hours' drive away to luck across the future Stirling and his sisters.

76 Nazdar, so sorry for the loss of Moxy.

77 I am in a pretty good position. A couple years back, I lost two dogs and three cats in the same twelve month period. Himself and I decided no more dogs, but we did get two cats. Both are a healthy, vigorous four years old. I am hopeful that I will not have to haul either to the vet for that trip across the bridge. And I'm certain Himself will out live me so I don't have to worry about what happens to the cats when I'm gone.

Except for big red Arizona, whose ashes are up in the CO mountains among (what he thought were) His People, the bobcats, I have the ashes of each of my cats in boxes or urns on my bookshelf. When I have my house, I'll find a better place for them . . . or maybe just keep them on the same shelf.

I have lost some cats over the years, but Gonzo is the only one I had to have put down. He got cancer, probably in fall 2021, but we didn't get a diagnosis until January 2022. Had to say goodbye in April 2022, about 2 months after Jesse died. I keep his ashes next to Jesse's. In the few short months we were all together, J and G forged a deep bond based on love and tuna.

81 Are there any charities that giving to will make a differenc?

I'm can't help but thinking they are mostly scams.

82 Wonderful pets today.

So sorry to hear about Autumn! A wonder-doggeh, no doubt, and I do hope your grief is short and ends with a new buddy to share your house.

83 Yay, Pet Thread.

That Persian Longhair on the chart looks just like smaller version of our Bella. Always wondered what she was.

84 I do like to think of our pets waiting for us in heaven. I know there's a big red golden named Maggie that will be happy to see me again. Gary and Loretta too.

86 Hope you didn't have any fireworks "adventures" with your animals.
---------

When I was 10 we had dog terrified of fireworks. Wouldn't got outside to do her business. Had to drive her out town to isolated area with no boom-booms. This was when fireworks were sold for weeks prior to the Fourth. It was miserable month for her.

There will be difficulties at the Rainbow Bridge, if all my cats are there. "Back off, Black Cat, he's *my* human!" "Stick a trout in it, Fat Boy, this one's *mine*!"
