Meet The PetMorons

Gardening/Pet Thread Crossover:

Hey KT,
As I was gardening this morning I heard this clicking and when I looked up here were my two garden companions. If you look up and to the right you can see his mate. I am not sure if the clicking was to say hi, or warn me away. I put out a saucer of water, and I hope they continue to stay in my garden. I love them. I think they are screech owls. Best part of gardening is having things like this happen.

This is Doug a 15 year old dachshund whose human passed away. He is being fostered by one of our Shep's volunteers. Lucky lady! She said he's still very playful and loves belly rubs.

Doug looks like a couple of wonderful dogs I have known. Thanks for helping him and dogs like him.

Our two 14 year old Am Staff mixes. Lola and Roscoe. Sisters from the same litter, they seem to unconsciously sprawl in the exact same positions awake or asleep. Uncanny sometimes.

Attached are photos of our current crowd of doggoes.
BillB here. Generally a lurker. AoSHQ is a read of mine every day.
My wife and I have had numerous dogs. It has always bee a sad occasion
when one has to go over the Rainbow Bridge. We currently have three
dogs. Eldest and chief of the dogs is Tito. We adopted him 13 years
ago on the 4th of July. My sister-in-law couldn't keep him so my wife
drove 30 miles to her sister's house and rescued him. He is an
Apple-head Chihuahua. He can be a sweet dog but he can be the fiercest
little dude in the neighborhood. He is in his twilight years but seems
to be in good health so he should be around for a couple more years.
Next in line is Maddie Mae. We adopted her from the Hill Country SPCA
in Fredericksburg Texas at 9 weeks old in May of 2019. She is a mix of
Catahoula Leopard and maybe Aussie Shepard; she is essentially a Red
Merl Catahoula with her beautiful golden coat. As to her name, the SPCA
gave her the name Maddie and we added the Mae to it; we found out that
was wife's great grandmothers name. She is one of the best dogs we have
had in our 28 years together. A great guard dog but only fierce enough
to keep "unkowns" at bay. She is one smart dog as she has learned to
say Pupperronie. That word applies to all good treats now.
Our latest adoption this past May is Dottie . We again adopted from the
Hill Country SPCA. She is a Chiwienie (Dachshund/Chihuahua mix). She
was 4 months old when we adopted her. She is the enigizer puppy. She
and Maddie Mae are constantly playing. She really is a cute and loving dog.

On the way out of the lake, I saw a large tortoise on the road. So I stopped, grabbed my shilallegh and moved it towards the edge a bit. Gave the guy behind me enough room to go on through. He pointed out that it was likely headed for water. So I managed to push it along, without flipping it over. Got it off the road and on the grass. It was not happy with me but I was not going to pick it up.

I have experience with that. My mother's last cat, Lil Bit, a dilute calico I'd found and brought home as a kitten in '74, was left behind when my mother passed in '86. The little lady was terrified of strangers, so I had a time tracking her down in the empty apartment. I popped her into a sturdy clothes hamper and tied it up with an electrical cord so I could get her to my car.

It took her three weeks to get used to me; she hadn't seen me in years. She hid under the bed, only came out at night to eat and hiss at my current cat. Then . . . on Christmas Day, she came out, leaped into my lap, and settled down. She was in shock, missing Mom, and terror for three weeks, and then she just wasn't any more. She lived another two years, to age 14.

38 My wife doesn't like our dog going in the bedroom. But she always says I'm his attorney, so here goes:

He's a good and dutiful dog. He's loud and intimidating, but never vicious. His barking is sometimes a louder version of whining about his problems, but it's usually about something important - a visitor, or an incoming vehicle with a large engine. By virtue of his false bravado and my arsenal, we're safe around here.

I think he's earned some bedroom time for his years of, shall I say, dogged service.

39 I love the pet thread! Wee Kreek Farm Girl got Owls, too! They don’t make their own nests, they steal other nests. If you put an owl house up, they (or their relatives) may move in, especially if you have critters around to eat. You can get them on Etsy.

Val went to the vet yesterday. They took another set of X-rays that they sent to a radiologist for evaluation. Doc said there was no reason Val couldn't go back out to the kennel on restricted activity. Took him down there this morning and when I went to let him out at 2:00 he seemed as happy as ever.

41 Pet thread! Yay! Always a delight, even with the sad news sometimes.

Every morning, Daisy the exuberant Malinois and I go for a nice walk. I put on her vest ("Hooman Defender" says the patch) and her control collar.

Lately, I grab the collar remote and the leash just in case, but then just open the door and out we go, untethered. She's been really good at sticking near me the whole walk, and it's great that she can wander off a bit and I don't have to tug-o-war with the leash. Rarely resort to the collar's beep ("Here" verbal command) and never use the shock function.

The other day, almost home, she suddenly bolted off into the high grass. Maybe saw a deer. I called and beeped her and she came back in less than a minute. Good enough.

It is a great joy to be partners with her. She seems to be developing a good vocabulary. She also goes nuts to get out to chase a ball -- beautiful to see her run full-tilt, and (usually) drop the ball right at my feet. She knows her limits. When she can't seem to drop the ball, I say, "Ready to go in?" and she heads for the door.

An epic trek you'll always remember. I drove four hours each way to meet and adopt the little black kitten who grew into Stirling the giant medium hair. Dagny required only about a forty-five-minute drive one way, though.

In contrast, I got nothing from the regular vet to whom I had been bringing my cats, and had cared for Tatiana the Wonder Siberian near the end of her life. They sent T. home with me to recover from a surgery, and she had heart failure at the emergency vet -- cardiomyopathy, they thought. I stopped and left a message about it at the regular vet . . . and heard nothing, no call, no card. I'd been a regular there for eight or nine years.

54 Since it's the Pet Thread, I learned that Riley Gaines has Springers. She posted a picture of the litter her dog had. So I posted that info on the Springer FB group I'm on. It got shadow banned and I couldn't find out why. The admins were going over the rules recently and I asked what the problem was. I guess whoever read the post didn't know who Riley Gaines was and thought it was an attempt to sell puppies, which would be against the rules. Kinda strange but I like Riley and they were cute pups

Wolfus it was not expected, I got the card thinking it was some Internet auto generated thing instead it's a heartfelt card.
The vet gave me a hug when leaving.
We came home and buried her. I think I said this, killed a snake digging the grave so Hissy Fit was interred with her favorite toy. Other than me, mean.

59 Stumbled into an "Exotic" pets pet show today.
I had no idea snakes were such a huge industry. Had to be a couple hundred for sale.
Also present were spiders, turtles, mice, rats, rolly pollis (if you can believe that), gekos, lizards, parrots, parakeets, axolotls...

Even more exotic was the customers. Every shade of hair dye represented. Minimal clothing so as to show off tats. Most with mutiple piercing on their face.

Not my thing. Grand kids wanted to go. The want a snake.

61 My 4 year old cat who I adopted from a rescue at 2 months of age is my shadow but touching, etc is only on her terms. Just got back from the vet and she has feline asthma. They are talking about pills, which will be tough but do able, then moving her onto an inhaler ?!?! I just don't see me getting there with her. She is young, loaded with spunk and willful. Anyone have experience with cats with asthma and any advice for me?

64 I think you are right Piper. They are nesting up in the Lady Banks Roses where many birds have nested before. There is a flat spot that used to have a bell before it got too overgrown and I move the bell somewhere else. Perfect spot for nesting. I just want them to start eating the pack rats and mice that sneak into the garden for a nice tomato snack.

Kind of, I think there are oxygen bottles that create an environment. Hissy Fit was clearly on her way out, and the vet put her in an oxygen kennel because she was so bad.

The DAY BEFORE she was walking and being herself I felt terrible bringing her in like that.

But I think maybe a scuba shop? Something not terribly expensive.

It is. The paw things (along with a nice urn or box, a memorial name plate, and more) usually come with the package when you go through a pet crematorium service, but that is part of what you're paying for. Very nice that your vet did that.

73 Keena with asthma cat, only let them give her steroid shot as a last resort. They pushed my cat over into diabetes.

I would recommend one of those room air purifiers you can get on Amazon. About $45. The one I bought seems to soothe my kitty.

When I have a yard, if it's legal, I may do that. But all the others since Marie-Antoinette, who passed in '06, have their urns or boxes on my bookshelf.

Arizona, the great Maine Coon mix, always thought he should have been a bobcat; so I sprinkled his ashes up in the CO mountains near Winter Park, where bobcats were known to roam. When he was young he stole Mrs. W. No. 2's little stuffed Pegasus, and for most of his life would play rough with it and carry it in his mouth like prey. I still have it, dirty but intact, atop a bookcase here.

82 My wife's cat went from fine to dead in like three days with some lung thing. Just went limp, never recovered, even on Oxygen at the vet. 7 years old.
Wife still isn't over that and it's been almost a year.

7 years is not long. 15+ here and honestly without the blobby Dumb Cat, I'd have a hard time. It's the familiarity. I come home and expect a certain thing, it's not there. This lasted longer than my human marriage.

93 Technically, according to her papers, Dagny La Siberienne is a "black mackerel amber tortie" -- which sounds kind of like a weird dessert involving fish. Black, or brown (really a gray), is her main color; her stripes are the mackerel tabby pattern, all stripes everywhere; she has a kind of tan mixed into the gray and with a patch or two on her feet; and she has a little white on her face. I guess that's what makes the "tortie" part.

My daughter named her, in a mass kitten rescue that involved ripping up my back porch.

Fen, you mean the ashes in the mountains, keeping the toy, or both? I've thought I trying to clean the Pegasus. It's probably close to sixty years old -- the ex Mrs. W. No. 2 had it as a child, and she was born in '63. I wouldn't dare put it in a washing machine. Maybe some Woolite sprayed on and wiped off?
