Ace of Spades Pet Thread, January 13

Worth watching, sound on. Read the commentary concerning racoon life habits, too.

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Somehow, I also missed this one from Hrothgar, but I bet there may be a few people out there who still have a little "Catmess".

The kitteh in the meme above kinda reminds me of the grandnephew rescue kitty who has just been promised to an adoptive home:

Benji was the "Dog of Honor" at my daughter's wedding in September. He walked down the aisle like a champ. Pork chops were served at the reception, so he was a very happy boy!

Dear KT:

Longtime reader of Ace, longtime lurker. Love the pet thread, an island of sanity in a sea of ever greater craziness.

And a reminder that there is some pure love out there.

Sadly, we're keeping a vigil on our sweet hound, Memphis, who we sent pix of a few years back. She's 13, and I'd like to think she's led a good doggeh life, complete with long walks, belly rubs, and a lot of very fine cheese.

Please keep up the Pet Thread, it is a source of comfort, as well as many smiles.

---Lurking

Memphis looks like a wonderful dog. So sorry that you are losing her. Stay in touch.

Your inclusion of Jewell's pittie mix today made me think of my own beloved Cookie, gone too long and sorely missed. Compare, contrast--except for the eyes, they look so much alike they could almost be sisters:

Mike of Cold Fury

It's amazing how pets remind us of our own pets so often.

Lurker with a dog! Here are two pictures of Addy, our Glen of Imaal terrier. Glens are fairly rare terriers from Ireland (the breed is categorized as vulnerable), bred originally to go after various rodents--quietly!--which means they still don't bark much. Glens as a rule are goofy, friendly and great with kids. They're big dogs (35-40 pounds) on short legs. In the first pic, you can see her shape a little better. The second one shows her chilling after a day of making merry on Christmas.

She looks like a fun dog, full of personality!

What great pet stories today. A Dog of Honor!

Thank you for sharing your pets with us.

If you would like to send pet and/or animal stories, links, etc. for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, the address is:

Remember to include the nic or name by which you wish to be known when you comment at AoSHQ, or let us know if you want to remain a lurker.

Until next Saturday, have a great week!

If you start feeling nostalgic, here a link to last week's Pet Thread, the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, January 6. Some special PetMoron stories and photos there.

I closed the comments on this post so you wouldn't get banned for commenting on a week-old post, but don't try it anyway.

Lori in Custer SD sent in some additional information on last week's post:

Hi. We just weighed Virga, the 10 month old Moyen poodle and she weighs 34 pounds. Breeder in Hill City, SD says females may reach 40 pounds. We are very happy with the decision to get her...not too big (we are over age 60), so she can go for walks with us. The dachshunds are not built for hikes. Virga starts a foundation agility class tomorrow, in Rapid City. She's high energy and loves learning things so I can't wait. They can't compete until age 12-15 months old, due to joint growth. But we can get the groundwork laid for all of us as we are new to everything with her.

Thanks for all you do and loving all the silly pets and their morons out here!

Nice to know more about this breed.

I don't know what breed this happy dog, Foxanne, who met By-Tor recently, is. Not a poodle. But we like happy dogs.

Bravo was in a similar state of mind. Wanted out. Got a whiff of the cold and snow, looked at me like it was my fault, and scooted away. Then he followed me around the horse as I did chores. His mom was the same way. Thought she wanted out, smelled the cold, then retreated into the vestibule.

22 Victor, love the foster kitties. Blue cats are so beautiful. Yay for your sister!

My first cat I got when I left college, Poco, was a sleek blue cat and a great hunter for her nearly 16 years. The only other cat I've had that comes close to her hunting ability is Julius, the black eighteen month old I have now. Funny how he reminds me of her sometimes.

I now have a mut now. Well, half Border Collie half Australian Cattle Dog(Blue Heeler). He just got his Batk box, this months theme is "Squirrel!" Buckley is having a ball. He got a toy where you put a treat in the tail and roll it up and it Velcro's close. He's trying to figure it out.

32 Hound Memphis looks a lot like my Pogo, who is snoozing on her bed behind me here. Pogo is heavier built, though, half Border Collie, and half Basset. But here tri-color markings are very like those of Memphis, except she has a brown patch on the top of her head. She is 14 years old, but hanging in there.

Not much in the way of pet tales today. But. As I look around the room, Daisy dog's toys scattered everywhere, I'm moved to say how glad I am she's learned what is, and is not, for her to chew on. For a critter with about two brain cells, she's pretty smart.

It's a 2009 outback. It only has 81k miles on it. I should prolly get belts and hoses replaced next time I get the oil changed.

Yesterday on the way home from the ferry, it sounded like I was driving with the emergency brake on. And when I took my foot off the gas, even in third gear, it wanted to slow way down at less than 2500 rpm. Last time it got this cold, it drove like crap until I got it to temp on the freeway.

I searched this. Apparently Subaru says 105 months, or 105000 miles. You are well over 105 months, but under 105000 miles. Apparently water pump. and timing belt tensioners should also be replaced in the course of this job. Makes sense, since one would have to re-do most of the labor to replace the water pump alone. The Seattle climate should be pretty kind to the rubber in the timing belt. I would suggest having it done over the course of this year.

Hasn't hit the Willamette valley at my area yet, but I am expecting to lose power here too. Fortunately the freezing rain has frozen by the time it hits the trees, so it just bounces off instead of weighing the branches down.

73 I've had the cone on the German Shepherd for most of the past 1.5 weeks because he was incessantly chewing at his butt. I started giving him allergy meds and it has helped, but occasionally I catch him gnawing when he's cone-free. I really don't want to take him to the vet unless necessary, because they have to completely tranq him to do anything. The average hyena is probably more amenable to being prodded by strangers.

79 Took Jake out front for variety and because there's a bit less snow. He was okay until he thought the porch step was an easy jump because of the snow drift. Caused a leg to cramp up and took a second try but we are back in.

A giant ape sometimes dubbed the “real King Kong” was driven to extinction by climate change putting their favorite fruits out reach, according to new research.

81 He's had the same food since he was a pup - lamb and rice-based. He gets chicken bites on occasion, but not enough to cause irritation like this. I'd like to wash his hindquarters but getting him to hold still for anything is impossible. I've vowed to never get a dog again, but if I did it would be one I could pick up and hold with one arm, not a small horse with a crocodile's jaws attached.

None of us are pet owners. We are totally owned ourselves.

88 My dear friends that rescued and gifted me both of my dogs pulled in the driveway and said. " we have gift for you". My immediate reply was I sure hope it doesn't have 4 legs.

92 Good luck Pablo D. Toby gets very itchy in the summers and this year I didn't catch it in time and he ended up needing a vet visit to get steroids and an antibiotic where he had make a couple of raw spots.

If you can brush the itchy area well and maybe rub with a wet rag perhaps you can remove most of any surface irritant. I don't know where you are. I think Toby is allergic to fly bites or possibly we have seasonal fleas. Getting an insect repellent on him seems to help during his itchy season.

94 Our dog had a wound on her paw and I bought some Forticept Blue Butter to help it heal. Recommended it to a neighbor whose dog has frequent hot spots and he said it worked well to clear them up. It might be worth checking out.
