Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Here's how to do an official I.D. for a hotel Mousekeeper. This one is from Iceland.

Charlie Age 29 .jpg

Hi KT! For a future pet thread. Here is my sweet Charlie (Cha-loooooch, as my friend calls him!).

He's grown up a bit since he's been on the pet thread but he's still just as cuddly.

Best - Boswell

Charlie looks ever so snugly. What a sweetheart!

Allie-Book-Critic.JPG

All of my cats have been featured on the Pet Thread before, but here are a couple of cute pics of my most recent kitties.

One features Hexie, my polydactyl kitty, who has started to slowly infiltrate herself into my bedroom, which is normally Penny's territory. Hexie likes to sit on the cat perch next to the window and watch the world go by. Sometimes, she likes to sit IN the cat perch as it's nice and cozy. Penny is surprisingly OK with this.

The other features Allie, my shy kitty who spends most of her time in my library, as that is HER territory. However, she's starting to come out of her shell a bit and has come into my office once or twice to jump up on my desk. In this photo she decided that I was done reading my book and needed to pay attention to her. Or she was protecting me from the content, as it's a pretty strange book...
.

Love what you are doing with the Pet Thread.

Best regards,

"Perfessor" Squirrel

Well, Perfessor, looks like you are raising some thoughtful kitties there. Cuties, too.

delile n pup.jpg

Delilah with her puppies, four boys and one girl, born on November 20th. For all her awards, ribbons and prizes, this is the most important thing she'll ever do.

The pups' coat color may lighten or darken a bit, but reflect their father Virago's vibrant red. For Borzoi, any color or combination of colors is acceptable.

Hadrian the Seventh

Wow, wow, wow! WOW!

IMG_3645 smu.jpeg

This is Smudge...just chillin'. After a rather traumatic beginning to life, my Smudgee came to me and rapidly turned into an intensely curious, wacky, adventurous feline. In other words, just a really cool cat.

His sister is (Queen) Maeve who has been on the pet moron page before. She is the opposite of Smudge: skittish and decidedly unadventurous. In other words, she hates Smudge. Or to use her favorite phrase: "We are NOT amused by this subject's antics!" as she disappears under the sofa.

RobertM (pretty much just a lurker)

I like Smudge.

14 Our three cats have developed a strange obsession with a yard long two-by-four. Jake started first, drooling on it and rubbing his chin all over it until the wood and his chin are soaked. Then Purry and Della checked it out and began to rub against it and wrestle with it.

It came from the shed, and some essence must have been deposited on it, because they're really attracted to it.

We live, essentially, in a field and there are tons of hunting possibilities for the cats, especially Purry. Jake eats most of his kills, but Purry just chews on them a bit.

'Tis rainy and dreary here. (Well, it's often dreary, but you get what I mean.) However, Stirling the great black cat does not seem to know it, or care. It's just him and me right now until Miss Linda brings his "sister" Dagny back this afternoon, and he's being very affectionate. Even in his wild "Evil Black Kitten of War and Pestilence" days, he loved human company and attention. I thought he'd outgrown being as demonstrative. But he's bored without Dagny and wants attention.

In a few more days he'll have been living with me for eighteen months. Amazing.

Do a search for concrete stain and concrete wax. Stain the concrete in a darkish color, and apply wax, and the rodent blood will simply mop off. And the concrete stain will camouflage any blood stains you cannot erase.

He had two relaxing times, one was a few minutes at bedtime to lie across my neck and shoulders and the other was on rainy days when he would sit on my lap and if I had my feet up and a blanket over them he would sleep in the tent made by the blanket.

86 Northernlurker--

I am so glad to hear that you and Paisley are in a comfortable place--except for the coyotes. We have the same problem here in central Texas so my girl can't stay out after dark.

I also love Peregrines and all other birds of prey but I am pretty sure, however, that they wouldn't be good pets. That is, unless, you decide to train them for falconry. Apparently they excel at that.

88 Yes, totally. You'd need those leather patches on your shoulders to keep from being pierced by their talons though. Worth it.

90 Yay, pet thread! Yay, Moronimals. Special yay for mama Delilah, and that line-up of pups!

When I suddenly had to go to the hospital in October, MiladyJo went with me. We ended up not going home for weeks. Son & daughter came out to take care of Daisy dog and Ony cat, and then daughter & son-in-law took Daisy to their small home, with 2 dogs & 2 cats. So, Ony was for a while home alone.

Finally, before Thanksgiving, we moved back, but to our new house. It was a few days.before we got Ony moved in. Had to find a good spot for her litter box. Daughter got her a cat tree so she had a high spot to escape Daisy's nosy nose..

Finally, Ony was home with us again, and adjusted to her new digs readily. Happy even to tolerate Daisy, no longer fleeing & hiding from daughter, and back to sleeping on the bed between MiladyJo & me. Found her way to a nice windowsill to watch the outside world. Eating well, meowing heartily. So glad.

That's my cat tale for today.

91 And, yes, falcons/hawks would make great companions for hunting or for training/showing. Otherwise they're like a REALLY intensive combination of Jack Russell Terrier (energy and need to go outside, way outside), bengal tiger (LOTS of meat to cut up and feed them), and chicken (they're gonna crap, proportionately more than parakeets, I think).

It was really fun being part of a falconry team, but it also took a LOT of work. (Like raising an entire giant flock of chickens to a young age, just so we could cut them up and feed them to the raptors. It was the apprentices job to clean out the chicken cages - yes, to deal with the chicken s*** stuff.)

I was driving back roads last winter and came across a guy training a falcon. I pulled over to talk to him. His wife was down the way, and they released a pigeon for me to watch the falcon take a stab at catching it. The young falcon missed, and they guy mentioned that the pigeon would fly home and they would use it again. He said it was a learning opportunity for both of the birds.

102 Moral dilemma for the Horde.
Last year a dog wandered up to my neighborhood. He ended up at my house with some help of my eldest child. I asked about and one of my neighbors said he saw a car throw him out. He was chipped and when we took him to the vet. They contacted the previous owners to find a phone number that was disconnected. We took him in and I tried to get the chip to my address as he likes to roam about. I could not do that because the previous owner needed to give permission. I got around that with a GPS tracker on his collar. (Well worth the investment, BTW).
I was at the vet two weeks ago and they asked about the chip. I told them I could never get it changed over, and the secretary asked if she could try. I told her sure. Needless to say she tried to get it changed. The Chip company actually did there job and got in contact with the previous owner. They called the vet asking for there dog back. I basically skipped out at that point. The vet is on my side because I have taken very good care of the dog and he is a runner and has the space to run here (family has about 200 acres). I know from the law stand point it looks like I stole the dog.

108 My 14yo Irish setter has started with a honking cough. It might be this "New" illness, but he has had zero contact with any other dogs. That is why I was thinking it couldn't be Kennel Cough.
It seems to be worse at night, I'll send a video of him to the vet and see what they say.

110 "They called the vet asking for there dog back."
----------

Clearly, they have not quite "moved on" but you also have become attached to the animal.

And so-- me?
I would contact them, see if they would allow me to keep. But if they said no, I would return their dog.

Posted by: JQ at December 02, 2023 05:52 PM (njWTi)

111 Picric, tough question. If the dog really had been dumped, I wonder if there was a conflict of attitude with the previous owners, like, say, a youngster wants it, but Daddy dumped him ("Oh, sorry, honey, seems Fido ran off for good") but kid wants it back now.

I detest anyone who dumps a pet, especially the tossed-out-the-car-window monsters, but, then, all our wonderful dogs and many of our precious cats over the past three decades were dumpees who found their way to our door.

112 Tough situation, picric.

Was the dog injured or had signs of abuse/neglect when it came to you?

If so, I'd have documented with the vet and refuse to return the dog.

If not, you may need to give back to the original owner.

114 I have a friend with falcons...it takes a year at least as an "Apprentice" to a licensed falconer to get a permit. Then you can build an apiary for one, get it inspected, permitted. After which you trap your own young one, acclimatize and train it. The process involves very careful weight management of the bird, feeding precisely on that basis, and coordinating flights to that weight and schedule. Different types and ages of birds are trained/used against various differing prey, whether smaller birds, squirrels or bunnies. Raptors are also territorial so that it becomes an issue to fly yours where native birds already live. You would not want to fly a kestral around bigger hawks, or a red tail around peregrines, or peregrines near eagles. After learning the ropes with a succession of self caught birds buying one from a licensed broker might be in the cards. My buddy ended up with a contract to keep breeding gulls, ducks, geese, populations under control near a a federally controlled airport, primarily through the fear his birds induced. He later trained a pack of border collies to expand that effort. Ended up with airport and even landfill contracts in NY state.

115 I rescued a cat out of the back yard, but it turned out to be a cat the neighbors had rescued, and she got chased off by the other cats in the house.
I asked if I could keep her since she fitted in here well, and they said yes.

I don't know, it is hard and a crap shoot either way. Best to be open and honest about the whole, thing, and offer to take the dog back if it doesn't fit in.

Posted by: Kindltot at December 02, 2023 06:20 PM (D7oie)

116 He had some smaller contracts for smaller birds INSIDE of some factories, warehouses, stores etc. that he trained kestrals and even sparrow hawks to do...but it turned out not to be worth the time and effort needed. He always live trapped his own birds and released them if they didn't work out, or if they aged out. I'm unclear as to what the rubric for those decisions were, but have some cool pics of some of his birds that he brought out to fly at my Farm. And some cool pics of me ,another friend, and his kids holding the birds.

117 Yeah, that doggie cough thing is new - so new that they've been studying it for over a year now. Yet it is only in the past couple weeks that it has become PANIC OF ALL TIMES thing. My guess is that it wasn't anything, because the media chuckleheads hadn't glommed onto it yet. Now they have; now it's a HUGE DEAL!!!

Likely variation of the virus that brings us kennel cough. From the veterinarians at U of Florida:
It is not yet clear if this is caused by a novel emerging pathogen or one of the well-known causes of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC casually known as “kennel cough”. The lack of a centralized reporting system means it’s not even possible to confirm that there is a spike in CIRDC incidence or severity. The intense media coverage of a “mystery disease” may be raising awareness and discussion about CIRDC cases that would otherwise be managed as usual.

During COVID, lotsa folks stopped getting routine vaccinations. I would guess that, during COVID, lotsa dogs weren't getting vaccinated, either. In the manner of COVID, my question is: how does this end? Or do we just close all dog parks, and many boarding facilities forever?

Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at December 02, 2023 06:35 PM (TOe+Q)

118 Supplement to my previous comment, from the Oregon Department of Agriculture:
Infections like this pop up in dogs from time to time. Sometimes these “new” illnesses are due to a combination of existing viruses or bacteria. This new illness could also be due to an existing bacteria that has changed over time and now causes a respiratory infection in dogs.

Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at December 02, 2023 06:41 PM (TOe+Q)

119 From what I have read so far...it's a treatment resistant version of something like kennel cough, and sometimes results in a treatment resistant form of Pneumonia. In fact, the only treatments are palliative, and it can last 4-6weeks.
My dog has had no contact with any other dogs, nor been out of the yard for over a year, except for one visit to the Vet over a month ago, to deal with an itchy skin ailment. Though there are squirrels, rabbits, possums and an occasional racoon that get into the fenced in 1/2acre yard. Also last I heard Ohio was not on the list of states where it has been seen.

120 That warning board reminded me of a few months ago. I think it was at a RenFaire. Not our usual one due to circumstances. There were a lot of communal water bowls for dogs at various places. I never recall a RenFaire having them before, but then, usually dogs weren't brought in either.

123 My precious senior Bichonpoo got that disease just before it started getting reported in the news (my vet had heard of it before that). He is almost 15 years old, and was so sick that my husband and I kept getting up in the night to check on him, fearful that he would not survive the night.
But, he did, thanks to a hardy constitution and good vet care.
Don't hesitate to get your stricken dog to the vet - it may save his life.
