Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ace of Spades Pet Thread, November 25A new type of bacterial infection could be the culprit behind a mysterious canine respiratory illness that has been infecting dogs from coast to coast, New Hampshire researchers say. Genetic sequencing of samples from 70 infected dogs from New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Massachusetts has revealed a previously unknown bacterium, researchers from the New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory wrote in an online report. We didn't need a new canine illness. At least 12 states have reported cases of the respiratory illness, according to CBS. The Oregon Department of Agriculture has received more than 200 case reports from veterinarians since mid-August, according to a Nov. 21 online post from the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association. "We suggest caution rather than worry," the association said. "The number of cases reported to ODA represents a very small percentage of Oregon's dog population." Other states with cases of the canine illness include California, Indiana, Washington, Idaho, Georgia and Florida.

Hi! This is my neighbor's cat, Baby Kitty. I was lucky enough one weekend to baby sit this beauty. Thanks for the pet thread, it makes the world a better place. JenniferSuch beautiful eyes! And it looks like Baby Kitty is used to being in lovely surroundings, too! You are a wonderful neighbor for a cat needing some cuddles on a weekend. This is Charlotte. She is a 12 year old lab who was an owner surrender. She had a lot of health issues including a bacterial infection an ear infection and arthritis. We have the infections under control and give her pain meds for her sore hips. She's a sweet girl!Great photo of Charlotte. Thanks for taking care of that sweet girl. This is Penelope sleeping on her bed aka a friend's vintage ham radio. She is one of 4 cats in the house, but she is the only one who adores the ham shack. When she sees me or my buddy even moving in the direction of the shack she rushes to get in there first. Perched on her bed warmed by the vacuum tubes, the only word that comes to mind that describes her mood is BLISS! RobertM mostly lurksI love that Penelope is so comfortable in her special spot! Thanks for sending in that unique photo! It's been colder and Mr Trouble decided to explore this afternoon. He found the secret catnip stash. He did finally go back out but I suspect he'll be back soon. NotsothoreauOh, my. Mr. Trouble, indeed. Here's Bravo sitting next to some pumpkins, and Charlie, hiding in the straw. Canada geese laugh at and taunt Lily our 4 year old corgi.
They come and go from the beach area behind the house on this lake we're on. Coming onto the beach, up on the lawn, pooping everywhere, doing their upside-down eating of the greens that grow on the lake's bottom. The dog cries to go out and give them the bum's rush. I open the door and she blasts out of the gate like a roping steer in a rodeo. The geese scamper into the water, and less than five feet out, they turn and face here and get noisy. They know she won't go in the water. She treats all intruders the same. She has her property, knows the bounds, and wants to chase off any intruders. All the honking and quacking makes me think they are mocking her and taunting her. "Hey, shortie, can't you swim?" Posted by: Mr Gaga at November 25, 2023 03:38 PM (ZtgZZ) 16

I can relate to the Golden puppy in the mud. Every. single. one. of my Goldens did the same thing. Must be genetic. Still watching Whiskey who snatched what looked to be the drumstick bone from the garbage when my daughter-in-law was cleaning off the turkey carcass. He puked up a knuckle with a very sharp 1" shard on the end of it. There's probably more because we heard the crunch when he bit down on it as we were chasing him. Watching him and his poop for the next couple of days. So far, so good. *fingers crossed* Posted by: IrishEi with yet another new laptop at November 25, 2023 03:52 PM (3ImbR) 26

My cat Jasmine loved to sit on top of my old computer because it was a nice warm tower just the right size for a kitty. Naturally, the fur did play a bit of havoc with the fans so I had to clean out the tower a few times.
My current computer has a rounded top, so it's not quite as convenient for a cat. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at November 25, 2023 03:58 PM (BpYfr) 36

I'd mentioned this earlier in the week, but we went to the nearby PetSmart to see the tiny black kitten Miss Linda rescued the dat before Halloween, and whom we brought to the SPCA. A local rescue organization took several cats and kittens and has them up for adoption at the store. This one has been named "Twilight," a better name than "Tiny" or "Skinny Puss" for sure.
She was all alone at the moment in her glass-fronted enclosure -- a pet bed, litter box, water and food dishes. She trotted to the glass and pawed at it when we spoke to her. But she looked bored. I bought a cat toy, a little "Lamb Chop" figure with a feather tail, and had them put it in the pen. Immediately she seized on it and started savaging it like prey. If "A moral act is one you feel good after," then this was enormously moral. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 25, 2023 04:07 PM (omVj0) 46

JTB, I heard a tale yesterday that has me still shaking my head. Supposedly a person cannot pick up a stray in Virginia. A friend found a starving dog, picked it up, brought it home. Animal control.will not take the dog and chastised friend for doing so. Friend calls vet and is willing to pay for any treatment the dog needs and will keep the dog. Vet will not treat the dog and friend is chastised again for trying to save the dog. The poor pup was in such bad shape it died. Animal control would not dispose of the body.

Ben Had, I hadn't heard this but it might have happened. Virginia state law says a stray animal found must be reported to the nearest animal shelter within 72 hours. They will notify animal control. (I think the theory is that the animals are property.) That's the law as I understand it. It doesn't excuse the shit for brains applying it no matter the circumstances. And if that vet didn't explain then he isn't to be trusted. Posted by: JTB at November 25, 2023 05:03 PM (7EjX1) 77

That dog disease is in Texas too. One of my dogs has it. We go for a 2 mile walk every morning, and often would go on a local walking trail where other people walk their dogs too. She came down with a cough 5 or 6 weeks ago, took her to the vet when it didn't go away after a few days, and she is now on her 3rd different antibiotic. He thought it was Bordetella, and said they've been seeing it really bad this year, and takes much longer to get over. After a month on 2 different antibiotics that didn't work I took her to a different vet. So far, same thing. Evidently it can take months for them to get over the cough.

Once upon a time I had two "strictly indoor" cats. Then a needy outdoor kitty showed up on my doorstep (and ya-how-how-things-go) and then I had THREE cats. It was funny - I'd open the door to get the mail or the paper and one of the pampered indoor kitties would occasionally make a run for it: "FREEEDOM!" Annnd, look up - no ceiling, just sky. Look around - sidewalks,
people, dogs, shrubbery. "Uhhh, it's kind of big and scary out here -- " and -zip- right under a bush. Then I had to go out and flail away under said bush in order to grab the panicky cat and get her back to safety. But the formerly outdoor cat? No way - if the door was open she'd walk into another room, as far away from "outside" as possible: "Been there - done that, I am NOT going back out there, ever!"
