Ahead of Thanksgiving, veterinarian reveals a common reason pets wind up in the ER during the holidays

Butzer said feeding your pets some table food on Thanksgiving can be OK -- but that owners should proceed with caution.
"Overindulging in food is hard for us, and even our pets, to digest," she said. "Food bloat is a real condition for pets that makes them uncomfortable and sick."

She said pets are safe to eat turkey with no seasoned skin and minimal fat, as well as plain steamed green beans, rice, plain potatoes, boiled carrots and other vegetables.
But "have your pets stay away from eating turkey skin, buttery vegetables, gravy, bones and desserts," she said.

I can understand that food bloat could become a problem. But some of those recommendations sounds sorta boring. How about watching quantities and allowing a bit of a treat?

And of course you want to be careful with gifts of macadamia nuts, grapes, etc.

Any other thoughts on keeping pets healthy and happy during the holiday season?

Meet The PetMorons

I sent you several pictures of our late, lamented Schnauzer, Scooter. After only a few months we got very uncomfortable about not having a canine member of the family and so we acquired Lucy.
She is a purebred AKC-registered pup, so when it came time to give her an official AKC name, we took inspiration from what we have seen on dog shows, and looking at her coloring, named her Star of Bethlehem Lucy Silver Boots. Quite a mouthful, but she is quite a handful. We had forgotten how active a puppy is. So far her favorite activity is to grab things she knows she isn't supposed to have and parade around the house with them.

There are a couple breeds that don't treat water like lava. Maine coons for one. That one is too small and short-haired to be an MC, but maybe it's related to one of the swimming breeds?

5 We had an Orange Tabby cat that was fearless around water. He'd get up on the edge of the bathtub when we were bathing our grandson and chill. Then, after we moved to KY and our place has an above ground pool he'd hop up onto the edge, walk around and around the pool checking out everything.

He never fell in.

13 Afternoon, all! Never had a swimming cat that I know of. When I was a boy, Rusty the red tabby loved to hop into the empty bathtub. One day he did it right after one of us had taken a bath and there was still two inches of water in the tub. Anybody who says cats' faces are not expressive should have seen his shocked look.

He looked as surprised another time when, in the patio, he spotted a garden lizard and slapped a paw down onto its tail, only to see the lizard detach itself from said tail and flash away. He was a smart cat; I suspect he never again seized a lizard by the tail alone.

15 Our calico was very interested in our above ground pool so we put her in a plastic tub and gave her a boat ride. I can't say she particularly liked it but she didn't freak out. She still walks around the edge so she's not afraid of it

16 After I had to rush to the hospital last month, daughter & son-in-law took in out Daisy dog. She got along with their two dogs & even their two cats after a while. Have some cute pix I'll try to get in. Home now, not quite on the old routines... except Daisy waking me at sunrise. Plan ahead for unexpected pet care needs!

One of my cats Gustavus did that as a kitten, he walked about in a circle a few seconds before leaving the room to jump on my bed to dry off. Years later he was hanging out by the pool next door facing off another cat and when the alien cat turned away he chased him...right into the pool. I was worried for a second but he swam in a half circle, made a line for the side and managed to pull himself out and run home and onto the sofa to dry off.

22 Had a mosquito hawk in the house last night. Bella (cat#2) was patiently eyeballing while it flew around the ceiling. I killed it and let her sniff it before disposing.

In retrospect I should have given it to her. She spent next hour staring at ceiling looking for it or a partner.

I had a cat that looked like the swimmer, large but lanky and long. If I had to say the breed he was closest to it would be Somali, a long haired Abyssinian.

45 I'm on the We Love Our Springers FB group, one of the few reasons I'm still there. One of the members is a British policeman in the country with a springer named Barney. He would make up these posts in Barney's name, about Grawneyma and the cat Archie. He came up with the term "sniffari" which is what dogs do on a walk. Barney helped him get through a battle with cancer and they had a special bond.

Barney grew older and started to fail. We all tried to help. He got a wheeled cart for his bike so he could take Barney out. Even carried Barney in his arms out in the garden. He finally lost him and many of us cried for the dog we'd never met and worried about his owner. He would still post, showed us the urn with Barney's ashes and we knew it still hurt.

I opened the site last week and there was a post from him. He had a little brown springer that he'd rescued from a neglectful owner, that was full of fleas and in need of love. Made me happy all day. The pup has already responded to the affection and care, looking like a jumping bean when he greets him after work. Pup's name is Jake, just like a certain brown and white springer on the couch with me now. Just what he needed.

Delilah's lair has been erected, the whelping box sitting on a blanket over a shipping pad on top of a tarp. Everything is surrounded by a folding pen to which sheets are attached to keep warmth in. A heat lamp is focused on the box.

Still have to put together the puppy box with a heating pad, to put the babies in and keep warm while Mama goes out.

For all of Delilah's ribbons, titles and awards, this is the most important thing she'll ever do.

I did get an update, he's taken well to obedience training but his bite training is slowed because he's teething. Good news is the trainer says he has great drive.

I also went out this afternoon and bought 200 pounds of dog food for the kennel dogs and a 30 pound bag of puppy kibble for Delilah. That should last five or six weeks. We're trying to stock up on things human and canine so we don't have to go out and so we can focus on Mama and babies.

52 I've been buying dog and cat food for the local food bank. This part is handled by the vet in town. Anyone that gets food from the food bank but also need some for their pets gets a coupon to take to the vet. Their office bags up the donations and distributes it. I added some to my Chewy order, then picked up some at Tractor Supply today.

I did donate food and cash to the Food Bank too, but I know what it's like when you don't have food for your pets.

54 When I was a kid a white feral cat used to come around our house. I named him White E. Cat--yeah, I'm not that imaginative. When we'd wash the cars White E. would come and roll in the water on the driveway. Only cat I've ever known who did that. I think I even have a picture of him laying in the water somewhere.

57 Bloat is a killer. We lost a dog to it a few months ago. She went from being vibrant and happy to us leaving the vet clinic without her in a matter of a couple hours. It was terrible watching her suffer. Sorry to be a downer. It's something to be aware of.

Glad to hear he's doing well! Black cats in my (admittedly limited) experience tend to be the most outgoing and adaptable, maybe even the smartest, of all the coat colors.

69 Miss Linda and I are heading out in a bit to the Dillard's outlet store in the near suburbs, not far from the airport. She still has a balance on her gift card, and who knows, I might find something for me. The trouble is, once I've looked over the men's sections, I'm done, and there is no place to go while I wait for her. The once-thriving mall this store was connected to is dead, and there is nothing close by for a cup of coffee or to browse for books. Oh, well.

71 REMINDER ... I am not a pet owner, but my niece is a veterinarian. Most pet owners know to not allow their cats and dogs to eat chocolate. But my niece says it's a good idea at this time of year to inform guests -- especially young children visiting your home -- to NOT feed chocolate to your cats or dogs.

Once I bought quiviut. (Musk ox) you can only get it from the oomingmak in Alaska, and its stupid expensive but supposed to be heavenly like cashmere.

I have never been more disappointed! It was a pricy waste. They hadn't removed the guard hairs and it was hardly soft.
