What to do while the kids are home from school

thankful everyday.jpg

Things to do with kids during the long weekend

Other than shopping, I mean.

There are lots of possibilities:

1. Playing. Do you have family traditions for play during the holidays?

2. Reading. Can and do the kids you know read books? How about essays?

3. Movies and videos. For fun or education. Got suggestions?

4. Social Media. Utilizing the Dark Side to introduce some new viewpoints.

Got other ideas?

Reading

First, with today's schools, it's a good idea to check to make sure that the kids CAN read. Then, maybe introduce them to some of your favorite books. Check in with some recent AoSHQ Book Threads. Maybe read something fun to the little ones.

And maybe introduce some new ideas about acceptable reading materials:

When I first moved to New York in 1990, I knew a total of five people. They all had lives of their own--I couldn't just plop myself down and demand their attention--and so I signed up for a once a week class taught at the West Side YMCA, hoping I could make a friend or two there. "Writing Funny," the course was called, and it was taught by a British woman named Freda Garmaise who was maybe in her mid-sixties at the time, and had published several books.

"What are the rules of comedy writing?" she asked at the start of our first session.

I put my hand up. "You should never make fun of anyone who has less power than you."

Freda looked at me the way I deserved to be looked at, with a combination of disgust and pity. "Where on earth did you get that idea?" she asked.

I groped for an answer. "The Village Voice, maybe?"

"No, no, no," she said. "The only rule of comedy anything is that you always should be as tasteless as possible."

I think about that moment a lot, especially now when punching down, the phrase, has become ubiquitous--the worst crime a comic or humor writer can commit, at least according to the people who now decide such things, meaning people on Twitter who determine, based, I suppose, on your photo and a wild guess at your net worth, who you are and are not allowed to make jokes about.

Words, we are now regularly reminded, are violence. So too is silence. I read not long ago that capitalism is violence, as is misgendering someone. Ignoring someone is violence, but so too is paying them attention. A friend recently called on one of her assistants to deliver a statistic during a business meeting and was later charged with "casual violence." Apparently Deborah needed to give advance warning that she was going to ask a question, one that might possibly put her employee--someone who was well paid to know stuff and be able to spew it forth--on the spot.

Who are these hothouse flowers, all so easily and consistently wounded? People whose parents never hit them, that's who. . .

And then there's writing. Ever written something special to a kid?

* * * * *

Movies and Videos

For long weekends, the important thing is to share the experience, so kids can hear your point of view. And some of the older ones might learn something without your input, too. There may be an opportunity to introduce kids to some actual fun or inspiring movies, either old or (rare) new.

Not-so-fun movies might be in order for kids who are in danger of capture by the "successor ideology". Hotel Mumbai was mentioned last week. If someone reads a Land Acknowledgement, a screening of Apocalypto might be in order. Here's another idea:

Social Media.

Utilizing the Dark Side to introduce some new viewpoints.

Seen the news about the protests against violent immigrants in Ireland? How's our English language media doing?

Press biased against Israel is not new. This was written in 2014. A former AP correspondent explains how and why reporters get Israel so wrong, and why it matters

13 Speaking of Thanksgiving, Netflix has a new Scott Pilgrim series they released. At first I thought it was going to be just the same story, in the style of the books, but it's not.

It's a sort of alternate history, and so far I'd say it's not bad. I think it's only about 8 episodes? And I've watched maybe half of them.

We'll see how it goes.

I wouldn't call it envy, but it does make me somewhat sad, not having any real tradition about such things.

Such stark contrast from one year to the next, over the course of the past several years, but when the kids were younger, it was a genuine joy to decorate... in a very non-traditional way.

Once our son was grown and out of the house, I no longer did the outside lights thing. Simple wreath on the front door with a single spot focused on it. Besides, when I did do the lights, my wife hated it. Her remark was, "my house looks like Kmart!". We still put up the tree, but we get no visitors anymore, except for a neighbor. Our families were very small, both parents are long gone. A Charlie Brown tree would be fine with me. Wife isn't into the whole decorating thing either. At our ages (51 years of marriage), simplifying is better.

93 Look like all those riots worldwide got results. Israel got fucked.

Although the huge pro-Hamas riots in Western European European capitals was a significant factor in Geert Wilders utterly unexpected win in the Netherlands.

It is dawning on many Europeans that Western Europe will have to choose between Western democracy and an Islamic theocracy, and that the decision point is much closer than most people suspected.

If the Islamists win, Western Europe will become like Muslim Spain - the countryside will still be non-Muslim, but the cities and the political power will be controlled by Islam.

Like most American figures of the first 100 years he was a complicated fella.

You look at his enthusiasm and then peruse his private letters that made the cut into posterity looking for a renunciation and come up "lemons."

TJ- "My own affections have been deeply wounded by some of the martyrs to this cause, but rather than it should have failed, I would have seen half the earth desolated. Were there but an Adam and an Eve left in every country, and left free, it would be better than as it now is."

This was penned in 1798 IIRC after it was made plain that the Aristocrats who had literally given their wealth to foster liberty in this nation were the ones being murdered.

Yeah "complicated."

Washington had his number, essentially the democrats have been undermining the nation as founded since the founding and their antics against the Federalists not that the Federalists were angels show that this nation's cohesion has always been a near ran thing.

Frankly and horrifyingly in my eyes I am not certain it is for the best for the American people that the states remain united.

180 Derek Chauvin prison sentences, fyi, & back of the envelope potential release dates:

Ok. First off, he's serving concurrent state & fed sentences of 21 years.

In MN, inmates are eligible for release after serving two-thirds of his/her sentence, assuming the inmate earns maximum good time.

The fed situation is more complex. Federal inmates can earn up to 54 days/year in good time, which is 15%. Some, but not all, fed prisoners can receive additional "earned time" (different from "good time") for completing prison programs, such as Drug & Alcohol addiction prevention. Unfortunately for Chauvin, inmates convicted of murder (& certain other specified offenses) aren't currently eligible for "earned time" programs.

Given all that, Chauvin could be eligible for release on his state sentence after he serves another 10-11 years, appx. I calculate that as 21 years, minus one third (14 years). plus time served (about 3 years).

post to be continued, to avoid being mistaken for spam.

I watch sources from Israel. The entire nation was overjoyed to at least get a few of the hostages back - and they all expect Hamas to screw them over and break the deal at some point. Be assured, every plane and every tank is all fueled up, and armed up, and ready to launch 30 seconds after that cease fire ends.

209 For long weekends, the important thing is to share the experience, so kids can hear your point of view. And some of the older ones might learn something without your input, too.

This is an everyday thing. The greatest parenting technique of all times is to eat together as a family. At least once per day. There doesn't have to be any agenda or pre-planned input - just conversation. Over time, over the years, stuff comes up & stuff comes out that open wholly new lines for conversations and input.

Do this: eat together. You will have an audience who still listens to you. Failure to do this is to send your kids out into the world unprepared, unpracticed, and unarmed which makes it a sure bet that they will succumb to the easy seductions of the Left. Why else do so many kids leave for college and come back as angry activists against everything that you are?

Be a family. That is the greatest gift you can give to your children, and and endless source for thanksgiving.

217 post 180 continues:

Chauvin's FEDERAL sentences total 252 months (21 yrs). Assuming he earns the maximum 15% good time, Chauvin would be eligible for release after serving an additional 14-15 years, i.e., 21 years minus 15% (17.8 years), minus time served (about 3 years).

The federal time remaining is greater than the state time remaining. (As stated his state & federal sentences are concurrent.)

A conservative POTUS (a GOP lame duck, most likely) could always reduce Chauvin's federal sentence, of course.

Chauvin is in his early 50's, I think.

For the record, my own opinion is that Chauvin was sentenced to way too much time, and that his state trial was unfair. The mob atmosphere should've been grounds for granting his change of venue motion.

Not just Ellison, but the Governor, and the 'kid' who was the Mayor, all pandered to the mob. That hour and a half video was worth every minute to figure out the story without a doubt. There was a flash frame of Floyd with something in his mouth, which from the toxicology report was most likely the final overdose of drugs that stopped his heart and killed him.

All of my back-of-the-envelope calculations above cause me to believe that Chauvin would most likely be released when he's about 67 years old.

There's a saying among attys who do federal criminal practice that, "No-one understands how sentences are calculated, except the inmates."

There's a pretty good chance he could be released sooner. Some of the prison programs for which he's not currently eligible could be changed so that he would be eligible.

In my experience, fed inmates always somehow get released a few years earlier than originally thought.

I've worked with lots of folks who spent time in prison, including federal, and I think that's true. They know. Because they have to.

One guy I worked with, this was state, not federal, was imprisoned for something like 15 years. He'd been sentenced for two crimes... which state statutes clearly state cannot be used for the same act. One excludes the other.

The sentence for either crime, max, should have been somewhere around 10.
