Veterans Day in a time that reminds us how important veterans are

Below, a quote from my grandfather, a young chaplain in WW I whose habit was to go in unarmed with the front line troops. This is from a letter to his father from the Belgian Front, late 1918:
I am happy to say that peace seems to have come. I was slightly wounded in the right arm in the offensive we took part in on the Belgian front. I felt happy to be alive and safe and I look forward to coming home. My sympathy goes out to those who will never go home and for those who expect to see friends and relatives who will never come back. I have come to the conclusion that life is a precious gift and is worth living, no matter what the difficulty, but we are so helpless to save it or preserve it that it is not worth while to consider our health and happiness and comfort above that of others. It is worth while sometimes to die, if death will serve to help others. When we think too much of our comfort we expose ourselves to more danger by disintegration than we do when we make a brave fight and face every danger and exposure. I have been trying to keep track of a few sources of sound information to counteract the flood of misinformation we have been swimming in. This Is Not a Drill
The Anti-Semitism Epidemic Examples of some of the insanities of leftist groups are given. Then:
Why are the BLM supporters, climate extremists, academic feminists, and trans activists so quick to side with Hamas? Why are those who champion women's reproductive rights so quick to align themselves with a Hamas-controlled Gaza where women lack the right to drive, let alone get an abortion? Why would they rally to a society where men are encouraged to hit the stray uppity wife? For that matter, why would so many LGBTQ+ groups side against a society that hosts some of the largest Pride festivals worldwide so that they can throw in with another that puts homosexuals to death? Conservative thinkers James Lindsay and Christopher Rufo have painstakingly traced the Marxist roots of all of these groups, showing that they all branch from the same rotten revolutionary trunk. These groups aim to overthrow the West, and so they support one another. Nests of critical theory fill their interchangeably empty heads. But I want to suggest a motivation less highbrow and more straightforward. They are all fed by the same polluted water source: hatred, envy, and resentment.
What leads them to show up at the pro-Hamas rallies in remarkable numbers is not ideological commitment. Sure, some may want Marxist revolution, if they even understand what that is. But whatever beliefs they may hold about gender, race, or climate quickly unravel under the clumsy weight of the obvious contradiction of supporting a regime so hostile to these causes. Which means they are no more motivated by ideology, in other words, than Adolf Hitler was when he allied himself with Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Arab mufti of Jerusalem, or the Japanese--another race allegedly inferior to whites in his despicable hierarchy--and made war upon the white French and British. Hitler believed Nazi racial theory, of course. But sometimes hatred simply burns brighter and hotter than all other ideological commitments combined. So don't bother informing Gays 4 Gaza that same-sex attraction is proscribed by criminal law in Gaza, backed by a penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, in that very territory they're so wild about. No need to educate them about the finding by Pew Research that the Palestinian population's opposition to homosexuality is among the highest in the world; that in 2016, Hamas responded to a senior commander's homosexual activity with a firing squad; or that gay adoption and gay marriage are strictly forbidden in Palestinian territories. They already know--and they really, truly don't care . . .
They are not the dupes of a hideous regime in opposition to their values -- racial justice, reproductive rights, women's liberation, climate awareness. Someone at X said that the Cornell student arrested for making threats against Jewish students was probably just trying too hard to fit in and win approval of his peers and took it a step too far. My view is that there's no just about it...the desire to fit in and win approval is very often the reason why people commit evil acts. I'm reminded of something CS Lewis said: "Of all the passions, the passion for the Inner Ring is most skillful in making a man who is not yet a very bad man do very bad things." . . . So yes, the passion for approval has always existed. But I feel sure it is much stronger, or at least has fewer countervailing forces, among people who experience today's college admissions race and its eventual fulfillment. . .
The students about whom the professor wrote in the essay linked above have not only been encouraged to devote their time to hoop-jumping, they have also been told again and again that their country and their society are evil - that their ancestors were evil, and their parents are probably evil as well. And that practically all aspects of culture more than five years old, whether traditional songs and folktales or classic movies, are harmful and certainly unworthy of study except for purposes of deconstructing their bad examples. And, of course, relatively few of these students are influenced by or have seriously studied any traditional religion. So they will likely be attracted to ideologies that promise to give a sense of meaning and coherence to their lives. I'm once again reminded of something in the memoirs of Sebastian Haffner, who came of age in Germany between the wars.
It's important to note that much of the current anti-Semitism, especially the kind seen on college campuses, is different from the traditional kind. While Jews were once disliked because they were too different from the overall society, they are now denounced because they exemplify things that the 'progressives' despise about their own societies.

My Father was a VFW Post Commander for a number of years. I miss going with him on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day when I was a kid to the various ceremonies.

Got similar for a couple of weeks at the beginning of the year. Caller with a Spanish accent from local area code asking for "John". My late first husband was named John, but he never lived in Texas and when asked it was a Spanish surname. Still unpleasant.
Eventually started telling them that I was on the 'No Call' list (true) which made what they were doing a crime, and that Jesus loved them and wanted them to know him but I didn't talk to criminals. Stopped pretty quick after that, for whatever reason.

Wonderful ceremony at my granddaughter’s elementary school for us vets.
I think things are changing a bit. With 9/11 and all the turmoil in various hot spots including our southern border, that people are appreciating what our veterans mean to this country.

as far as casualties, Israel , for some reason, has alway been held to a much higher standards than anyone else, when it comes to self defense, to war. as if people are offended that Jews are defending themselves. everybody rushed to show sympathy after 10/7, but when Israel started to take care of the problem , all of a sudden that is just not acceptable.

I think what we're all going to have to get used to is people who get "elected" to office, who have no real power or control over the working of government, because government is more and more just an animal that self-propels to do all the things it does, without any real input from anyone outside its permanent structure.

What's rather apparent, is that his advisors told him before the previous debate, to try to make nice with the other people on the stage, and they ganged up on him.
Whether he decided on his own, or his people did, I don't know, but he obviously came out with a F-that attitude, was zeroed in on Nikki Haley in particular, and said what a LOT of people are thinking about a number of things.
He'll never be President, but if he managed to expose the twin harpies of the party, Haley and Ronna McRomney, for what they are, he will have performed a valuable service.

I remember walking out of the class thinking, "I guess the West had a good run. It was bound to end at some point."
In one class, we were told to think of signs of patriarchy. I asked, could hijab be considered a sign of patriarchy? Oh boy! I got mobbed by several 18-year-olds (I was 32), and called ignorant and a bigot. The professor didn't feel like any of that was insulting to me.
But when I dared to tell someone "You misunderstood my point", the professor cut me off and said I can't talk like that.
After the class, very confused, I asked about the clown show I just witnessed.
She said: "You can't say they're wrong."
I asked What if they are though?
"There is no wrong. Every worldview and experience is valid. You can't shut them down."
This was my first time facing this cult. So I said what experience? Puberty? Living in their parent's house and getting an allowance? They're 18. What worldview?

The false government we have today is not punishment for original sin.
It is a consequence of not living up to the covenant we made with God when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Until we get our act together and re-impose our proper authority over the filth that populate the bureaucracy, nothing can improve, and sooner or later the consequences of allowing those animals to run wild are going to come for you no matter how much security you think you have today.
So, in that sense, yes, I deserve it as much as you and anyone else who tolerates the government. But I will continue to remind everyone of the duty The Lord assigned to us when He put us here, subject to that covenant, until we find the will to act, or He releases me from it.

Pooky had a frank conversation with Pookette last night how his time in the military contributed to his diagnosed sadism. She was horrified that anyone in the military would delight in harming others. We explained that the goal of the military is not to save lives, as she had been taught, but to kill people and break stuff. There's a certain type of person who thrives in that environment, and we explained that while Pooky had those tendencies when he started, the military breaking him has turned him into a sadist who struggles not to hurt those he loves. We explained that Pooky's mental disabilities are rated by the VA as the same as someone who lost two legs and an arm, and that both her parents would take Daddy losing a limb or even two over his current mental issues.

Boy, you just never know. I drop off my laundry this morning (fluff and fold, just like on Seinfeld). It's a cheap luxury. The girls know I'm a bit crippled up and always come out to the car to get it, and bring it out when done the next day. I always just give them a twenty, which gives them a $5 to $6 tip. Gal comes out, smiles, gets the bag and tells me "thanks for your service, keep the twenty". Grizzled vets can get dusty eyes.

Through an opening in this dome a ray of sunlight shines at twelve o'clock on 16 December annually, falling onto the centre of the Cenotaph, striking the words 'Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika' (Afrikaans for 'We're for you, South Africa'). The ray of light symbolises God's blessing on the lives and endeavours of the Voortrekkers. 16 December 1838 was the date of the Battle of Blood River against the Zulus, commemorated in South Africa before 1994 as the Day of the Vow.

If you've not seen it, I recommend the Mark Manson doc 'The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck' because he talks about this huge disconnect between Social Media World and Real World and what it's done to millennials and zoomers. One of the few guys I've run across who really gets to the meat of what's going on with us youngsters.

Probably very little math used at all at that time.
Anyone with minimal observational skills will notice themovement of the sun in the sky and the change in seasons.
Circle of sticks. Shaman/sciency type moves stick everyday and marks where the shadow is cast. Do that for a few years and clear patterns emerge. Eventially replace sticks with big rocks.
More like large scale empirical geometry.
It does take some complex math to explain the astronomy behind it and map out where the sticks and rocks go w/o trial and error, but not needed if all you have is years to do it manually.

If there is any hope for a brighter future, it's going to have to come from younger people realizing what we've done to them. Fundamentally creating a change in how humans interact, and obviously, not for the better.
Those of us who are over 29, we can usually see it (but not all of us), and those under, I do worry about them. Because they have the world in their hands. My time is coming to an end. I'm not bitter or even fully resigned to it, I just recognize the older we get, the more the world ignores us. And whatever "wisdom" we have to pass on, we have to do it in small bursts.

Being Big U they had shitloads of classes for the basic U requirements (literature, science, humanities were the main year long reqs). Lit and scince had a lot of specialized content. Women and Literature counted in the course tally to get the covetted 'Women's Studies' cognant gold star added to your diploma. I took that just for something different. Wasn't bad... some airheads in the class too. Was only one of two guys with thirty chicks.
It was easy to get women, black, queer, etc studies material for lit and humanities... but science.
Naw. White, white, white. All anglo, french, german, russian, and jew all the time.

Two houses ago, the sun would rise over a massive peak, and when I woke I would raise the blinds and watch it. Over the course of the year it would rise further and further down toward the southern edge of the peak.
So yeah, casual observation skills. And the experience of wonder at God's great creation was possible, even for a cynical sot like me.

Yesterday there was a thread on painting a large Boeing in British Airways colours (sp. because UK). It was over ½ ton for many coats. How much paint would be needed to paint over the Sun in your case?

The fetching Mrs Beartooth was in Naval Intelligence during the Vietnam era. Years later she joined a WAVES group of retired female Navy veterans. Well, they also adopted a British WREN veteran.
All the women were WW II vets and were quite old when my wife joined them. For a number of years we would rent a large passenger van and I would drive her fellow vets in the Albany, OR veterans day parade.
Sad to say they are all gone now.

At my old lab, one of the scientists noticed that the sun threw a bright spot on the wall every day at the same time, and over the course of a year, it formed an uneven infinity sign, aka an analemma. It was pretty cool. I assume it will never be painted over.

One of my kids' school did a thing for Veterans Day where they asked kids to being photos of any family members who served. And then there was a slide show with all the pics. My kid brought in pics of great grandparents, all deceased who served in WW2.
It was a very moving tribute.

The internet was built by nerds, grew by nerds, but suddenly these interlopers happened along, just like the residents of the city, and decided to take over everything. Not content to coexist they demanded control over speech and the government went along. Suddenly a lot of people were silenced and people who perhaps were in the fuzzy middle noticed and maybe thought some sort of preference cascade had come along and they were on the wrong side. Thankfully, Elon Musk happened along and gave the left a 2 X 4 to the side of the head. Where it goes from here is anyone's guess. I'm neither optimistic nor pessimistic.

Grandson's school did the same thing. I sent him a picture of my dad, a very young looking 20-year-old in his Army Air Corps uniform. DIL sent a link to the whole slideshow and, yes, it was very moving.

Huge, well-attended Veterans Day parade in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
Closed main street and half the city was either on the sidewalks cheering or in the parade, parading.
It was quite moving.
Most important thing to do: hand out little American flags to kids, and watch them wave the flags like old patriots, as they march in place to patriotic songs.
Liberals hate kids waving American flags. "No patriotism must be taught!"
Give kids American flags.

My veterans are busy people today...
Hubbymayhem (US Army) was up at the crack of dawn, started digging for the water line, chatted with the contractor who came to give estimate on building a new porch, and loaded stuff in the car to be donated. We went to late breakfast then to the donation center, hardware store and Wal-Mart. Back home he installed shutters and helped hang the artwork. He just went back to digging.
The boy spawn (US Army Cav) is the Legion post commander and had several veteran related events to oversee.

It seems to me that the corollary to "cease fire" is, "and leave a sizable Hamas remnant in Gaza to fight another day."
Nobody ever questions the "cease fire" prominentzy about that. So what happens to Hamas AFTER your cease fire?
If Israel were to leave Hamas intact in Gaza, it would've been better for Israel not to have invaded at all.
I agree that the 2 million+ civilians in Gaza must not be left in any doubt that 1) "to Hamas goes the victory!" is a lie; and 2) that if this happens again, what's happened to them this time will seem like a walk in the park.

Today we had a great Veteran's Day acknowledgment with speeches by Vets and thanking Vets, patriotic music by the hs band including the themes of various service groups and letters shared written about Veteran's Day and veterans by 5th grade students. Only drawback was the Mayor saying "We will be reevaluating our history to include the life experiences of all people who served." In other words, it's not the fact that it's Americans who served their country, it's that they were first of all part of another identity group and that is most important.

Key phrase is 'at the moment' . I'm one who believes there is enough circumstantial evidence to convict in a court of law but you need irrefutable objective evidence to impeach Biden much less convict in light of the numbers in both houses. That the investigation continues and the crimes reported is better than a failed impeachment. (again failed because of the numbers)
